Welcome to Leg 1 of The Amazing Race 34! It’s been a while, and now that COVID has overstayed its welcome, we have a lot of changes. First, we get overhead shots of Munich, Germany, the starting line for this Race. Teams were all flown here for the start, loaded on a giant log raft, and taken on a German Log Flume ride of sorts. TAR 34, Recap Leg 0, 9/22/22

Welcome back to the Amazing Race! It’s season number thirty-four. Which actually feels ungimmicky and with a lot of the same spunk as some of the early seasons, even with the COVID restrictions in place. Also, a relatively quick turn around, as this season filmed in May and June of 2022. As opposed to the last romp about Europe. Oh, and I brought Toyouke along for the snark. Aren’t you lucky? We’ve read the bios and watched the videos, so let’s get to this shall we? (Toyouke: “Why are the individual team bios on Instagram? Top Chef 6/2/22--"The Final Plate" summary

Previously on “Top Chef”: in our finale location of...Tuscon...everyone went to the country's oldest Mexican restaurant to make something with carne seca. Evelyn appeared to have the advantage, but Sarah won by being creative. Evelyn is familiar with these ingredients but that means she has to work extra hard to not play it safe. The Elimination challenge asks chefs to make two dishes (one must be sweet) using both cactus and chiltepin, a type of chili pepper. Evelyn won by not playing it safe, but also knowing how to highlight the ingredients. Damarr had some technical failures and was sent home. (click for more)

Top Chef 5/26/22--"Cactus Makes Perfect" summary

Previously on “Top Chef”: the whole episode revolved around fishing. The contestants had to fish for their ingredients and then make two dishes with whatever they caught. Everyone caught something so there was no drama there. Sarah was playful and creative so she won with things like fish that reminded them of pastrami. I thought for a minute they would have a final five but in the end, Nick really screwed up his fish cakes and also his tacos and was sent home. (click for more)

Top Chef 5/19/22--"We're On a Boat" summary

Previously on “Top Chef”: Sarah returned from Last Chance Kitchen and all the contestants went to Galveston. The Quickfire involves a seafood tower, but they have to make it outside near the beach and hope they don't get sand in everything. Evelyn won for putting her own spin on everything, and she was given extra time to cook during the Elimination Challenge. The chefs were told that there was a family coming for vacation, and they would each be assigned a family member to cook for. Several people read their instructions and realized they were cooking for their own family members. Very cute. Buddha made pasta amatriciana, the dish he had the first time he ate his wife's cooking. It was rustic and the perfect timing to do something rustic instead of crazy and he won. Ashleigh didn't cook her squid long enough so she was eliminated. (click for more)

Top Chef 5/12/22--"Family Vacation" summary

Previously on “Top Chef”: the chefs had to cook with food from the farmers' market and proteins from Chipotle for some reason. Nick won because he seems to be very good at Quickfires and winning money. The Elimination Challenge asked the contestants to make food for the International Space Station. I'm not sure how much anyone stuck to the guidelines, but they're only going to be “inspired by” the dish so you know how it is. Buddha won by making a dessert that resembled the moon, although I still feel meringue is too crumbly. But sure. Jae was eliminated for making mushy meat and chewy barley. (click for more)

Top Chef 5/5/22--"Dinner in Zero Gravity" summary

Previously on “Top Chef”: the chefs had to make dishes with vegetables in single colors. It was just weird, but interesting. Better than product placement. Damarr won, although he did have green so it wasn't super hard? Then everyone had to make soul food, but it could be whatever spoke to them personally. Didn't have to be traditional American soul food. Jae made a delicious Korean dish and won. Luke fried some meatballs and they were hard to eat so he was sent home. Is it because Tom and the other judges don't get other cultures so even though it was accurate, they didn't get it? I don't know in this case but in the past I do think that's affected other people so it's possible. (click for more)

Top Chef 4/28/22--"Freedmen's Town" summary

Previously on “Top Chef”: It was time for Restaurant Wars. Both spots seemed to be cohesive, with good food and no shots of servers forgetting what tables they were going to or backups in the kitchen. Matriarc went for Southern cuisine, lead by Ashleigh and Buddha doing front of house. No Nem did Southeast Asian, with Evelyn running the kitchen and Jackson doing front of house. Buddha admitted he watched previous seasons and took note of how to do things, and ended up with great service. Jackson wanted to serve family style and also two courses at once and then he didn't greet the judges or explain any dishes. Then he admitted to everyone he couldn't taste anything, which upset his team, as he waited until after judging. But in the end, he was sent home finally. I get that he's “a strong chef” but those front of house errors are the most basic errors. You gotta tell the judges who made what dish, come on. Ashleigh won for leading the other kitchen to victory. (click for more)

Top Chef 4/21/22--"Restaurant Wars" summary

Previously on “Top Chef”: the Quickfire asked the chefs to cook Nigerian cuisine, which is very interesting and should have been the Elimination challenge. Real talk, wouldn't this episode have been better with the product placement in the Quickfire? Anyway, Buddha won immunity. Then everyone had to cook in teams and do dinosaur cuisine. I know. Evelyn, Nick, and Jackson had the best menu, which means Evelyn is on a roll and Jackson is not hurt at all by not being able to taste anything. Jo was eliminated for overcooking quail and having boring carrots. (click for more)

Top Chef 4/14/22--"Swallow the Competition" summary

Previously on “Top Chef”: for the Quickfire there was some product placement and we were meant to believe a national brand would make gelato out of pork rinds. But Nick and Ashleigh still won immunity. Ashleigh was thrilled since she'd just returned from Last Chance Kitchen. The Elimination Challenge was to be inspired by some famous Texan women. Some of this was successful and some people just got inspired by women in their lives or whatever they felt like. Evelyn won for actually being inspired by Selena and making a well-balanced pretty dish. Monique made a weird bean salad with dry oysters so she was sent home. (click for more)

Top Chef 4/7/22--"Texas Trailblaze-hers" summary

Previously on “Top Chef”: we finally had a BBQ episode. There was also a Quickfire that Nick won but they made it a twist so whatever. For the Elimination challenge everyone had to make brisket and then be creative with it. Evelyn won by making a curry that Padma liked. Ashleigh had huge cuts of brisket and didn't season her meat properly so she went home. (click for more)

Top Chef 3/31/22--"Don't Mess with BBQ" summary

Previously on “Top Chef”: the Quickfire asked the chefs to make biscuits. Somehow Jackson won, even though he can't smell or taste anything. The Elimination Challenge put the contestants in teams, asking them to make two dishes that looked identical but tasted completely different. Amazing concept. Jackson and Buddha won, because Buddha was able to successfully make panna cotta on this show. Sarah and Robert failed at both their dishes, one of which was another panna cotta, and were eliminated.(click for more)

Top Chef 3/24/22--"Doppelgangers" summary

Previously on “Top Chef”: the chefs were asked to cook for the Asian night market. They were randomly assigned cuisines, not that that helped everyone anyway. Jae won for making a very balanced dish. Jackson did well despite not being able to taste anything. Sam left his potatoes at the Top Chef Kitchen, so he grilled some on the day of, and they were raw. Then he strangely insisted he was an innovator and had grilled potatoes on purpose. He never admitted it was a mistake. Not even in confessional! So he was sent home. (click for more)

Top Chef 3/17/22--"Noodles and Rice and Everything Nice" summary

Previously on “Top Chef”: everybody was supposed to make queso, and they did, to various amounts of success. Damarr won by using hot peppers as dippers for his queso. Then everyone got into two teams to cook...on a football field. Oh and everything had to be carb-forward. Why? Who knows. There was some strategy involved in how you paired up your team members with the other team, since you were going head-to-head. No one actually won, since you had to go a certain distance to win and no one got that far. Yeah, it was that confusing. Anyway, Damarr won again, for making dirty rice but with barley. Stephanie, she of the “Midwestern” cuisine, went home for making feijoada but then taking out all the meat and serving beans and broken rice. (click for more)

Top Chef 3/10/22--"Friday Night Bites" summary

Previously on “Top Chef”: we began the season with a gimmicky Quickfire that involved working in teams and not speaking to each other. One team did not plate a single thing. Empty, clean plates. Buddha, Monique, and Jo won immunity, and promptly did not get much screen time in the Elimination challenge. Each team had to break down a primal of beef and make a coordinated three courses with cuts from that primal. No one cared about if the menus were coordinated. Robert won with pot roast and gnocchi. Stephanie harped on being “Midwestern” and wanting to make meat and potatoes and not Asian food, which I thought was the loser edit, but in the end she survived. Instead, Leia made terrible summer rolls and was sent home. (click for more)

Top Chef 3/3/22--"Primal Instincts" summary

Previously on “Top Chef”: Gabe was the winner. Most people wanted Shota to win, especially after Gabe was accused of sexual harassment several times. This season is in Houston, which only makes me once again advocate for coming to St. Louis. We have too many weird regional foods but also a huge Bosnian population (excellent sausage) and plenty of Midwestern cuisine. Anyway, it's a new season. (click for more)

Project Runway 2/3/22--"Finale" summary

Previously on “Project Runway”: the final four designers were asked to create a look that would showcase what their collection would be about, as they always do. It's supposed to be an advertisement that makes the judges eager to see the rest of the collection. They said it would be down to three but you know and I know they so often claim they can't decide and let everyone through, which is exactly what happened. They also claimed a bunch of times that this is the first all-female finale which is absolutely not true. I mean the judges said it, but their social media from this past week also says so. Previously on “Project Runway”: the designers had to make a look for a supermodel and an editorial photoshoot. We got a side story of “everybody hates Shantall”, but she didn't seem to care very much and also on Twitter it was apparently caused by Shantall yelling at Coral for some reason. Which we didn't see any of. I'm not defending her but I would like to know why that was cut but the shunning was not. So Shantall of course won, and then Bones finally went home. Chasity won, and I saw a lot of complaining online because people didn't like her dress, but I thought it was fine. I mean people whined that it was tiger stripes and tigers aren't African. Project Runway 1/6/22--"The Housewives" summary

Previously on “Project Runway”: the unconventional materials challenge! This time it was things in a bar. Shantall made a dress out of straws, sewn together to look like armor. It really was a cool look. Prajje was eliminated because his look didn't fit, but really he had one of the plus-sized models and they specifically said she didn't show enough skin. Yes his skirt was a weird length, but because it wasn't super fitted, they decided it needed to be very exposed on top and I'm tired of the judges constantly harping on how beautiful the plus-sized models are (as if the other models are not) and insisting the plus-sized models have to wear tight clothing that exposes a lot of skin.
