TAR 34, Recap Leg 5, 10/26/22

Welcome to Leg 5! Last time, on This Group Of People On Horses And Camels Can’t Be Real, Can They?, 9 teams visited Jordan for the first time. Emily got injured and Linton struggled finding things. Team Big Brother and Croquetas battled for first with Croquetas coming out on top. Linton and Sharik were finally eliminated. Who will be eliminated. . . next? (click for more)

Arrival at the pit stop last episode:

1st – Luis and Michelle, Team Miami Croquetas

2nd – Derek and Claire, Team Big Brother

3rd – Marcus and Michael, Team Military Bros

4th – Abby and Will, Team High School Sweethearts

5th – Emily and Molly, Team Long Lost Twins

6th – Quinton and Mattie, Team NFL Cheerleaders

7th – Glenda and Lumumba, Team Tall and Small

8th – Aubrey and David, Team Ballroom Dance

Great Temple, Petra, Jordan

Teams are then transported through the magic of television to their next Pit Start.

Amman Citadel, Amman, Jordan

Teams are then informed of a missing team, and Phil calls Abby and Will via cell phone.

Due to positive COVID test, Abby and Will are eliminated from the Race. Will is just happy they got the chance to run at all. Abby remarks they have to roll with the punches, and this happened to be one of the punches.

Phil then informs the rest of the teams that due to a team already being eliminated, the next leg will have four departure times, and the last team will have the latest, forty-five minutes after the first. (Toyouke: “Apparently on a different international version they quarantined and then brought teams back? And 45 minutes behind the first team is not impossible to overcome. 45 minutes after the team in front of you would be a different story.”) But for this leg, teams depart together, and their next clue is on their bags! Travel safe!

Teams get their clue in the following order:

1- Marcus/Michael

2- Luis/Michelle

3- Derek/Claire

4- Emily/Molly

5- Aubrey/David

6- Quinton/Mattie

7- Glenda/Lumumba

Clue: Race the entire leg in Amman on foot. Make your way to Maktabet Khizanat al-Jahith Bookstore to get your next clue. You have 10 dinar for this leg of the race.

(Toyouke: “Seems like a lot more mask wearing which makes sense.”) So teams make their way to the bookstore to get their next clue. Teams arrive in the following order:

1- Marcus/Michael

2- Emily/Molly

3- Derek/Claire

4- Aubrey/David

5- Glenda/Lumumba

6- Quinton/Mattie – who manage to wander past the Route Marker with. . .

7- Luis/Michelle

Teams open their clues and we get the fifth Detour Clue.

DETOUR:

Step By Step OR Letter By Letter

*Step By Step: Teams make their way on foot to the Roman Theater to learn a Jordanian flirt dance. Once the dance has been learned, teams must dress in traditional costume and perform. If the instructor approves, teams get their next clue.

*Letter By Letter: Teams make their way on foot to the Odeon Theater and memorize the Arabic alphabet in order and recite it to a proctor. Once correct, the proctor will give them their next clue.

(Toyouke: “This is the second dance challenge and it feels like a lot? Maybe I'm just suspicious. Also because is this detour unbalanced. "Learn a dance" versus "memorize a new alphabet"?”)

1- Emily/Molly choose Letter By Letter

2- Marcus/Michael choose Letter By Letter

3- Aubrey/David choose Step By Step

4- Derek/Claire choose Letter By Letter

5- Glenda/Lumumba choose Step By Step

6- Quinton/Mattie choose Step By Step

7- Luis/Michelle choose Step By Step

Much flirt dancing and alphabet reciting ensues. So, teams complete the detour in the following order:

1- Marcus/Michael

2- Emily/Molly

3- Aubrey/David

4- Luis/Michelle

5- Derek/Claire

6- Quinton/Mattie

7- Glenda/Lumumba – (Toyouke: “OK but I need Glenda with a sword and Lumumba dancing around her.”)

When they rip open the clue, teams get the sixth roadblock. (Toyouke: “Interesting that they didn't send them to the park and THEN give them the Roadblock clue.”)

ROADBLOCK:

Who’s feeling broken-carted?

In this roadblock, teams must travel to Al-Hashemi Street Park, where one team member must assemble a cart called an arabaya to get their next clue. Once complete, teams must load their belongs into the cart and take it with them to the Pit Stop.

After travelling to the Roadblock location at Al-Hashemi Street Park, the following teammates take the Roadblock:

1- Luis

2- Michael

3- Molly – because of Emily’s leg.

4- Claire

5- David

6- Quinton

7- Glenda

After much cart building, teams complete the Roadblock in the following order:

1- Luis/Michelle – but as they leave, their cart falls apart. (Toyouke: “OOHHHHHH I did not expect the twist of "if you didn't build your cart well enough you'll lose time repairing it.”)

2- Aubrey/David

3- Quinton/Mattie

4- Derek/Claire

5- Emily/Molly

6- Marcus/Michael

7- Glenda/Lumumba

Teams are now instructed to race on foot to the Nymphaeum, the PIT STOP of the fifth leg of this racearoundtheworld. The last team to arrive WILL be eliminated!

1- Luis/Michelle – who win Expedia Reward Points for a five day trip to Barcelona, Spain

2- Aubrey/David

3- Quinton/Mattie

4- Derek/Claire

5- Marcus/Michael

6- Emily/Molly

7- Glenda/Lumumba

And Glenda and Lumumba are the last team to arrive. But since a team has already been eliminated this leg they are safe, and will have a forty-five minute start pause at the beginning of Leg 6.

ORDER NOW:

1st – Luis/Michelle

2nd – Aubrey/David

3rd – Quinton/Mattie

4th – Derek/Claire

5th – Marcus/Michael

6th – Emily/Molly

7th – Glenda/Lumumba

Next week: France! Wall climbing! Quinton: “Stay cool, stay calm, stay cute and stay collected.” But who crashes the car? Until next time!
