TAR 34, Recap Leg 9, 11/30/22

Welcome to Leg 9! Last time, on My Knee Still Hurts!, 5 teams continued to make their way through Spain. Emily’s knee is still causing her problems, and Aubrey and Claire are afraid of heights, but the Military Bros got too far behind to catch up to the injured twins, and are eliminated. Who will be eliminated. . . next? (click for more)

Arrival at the pit stop last episode:

1st – Luis and Michelle, Team Miami Croquetas

2nd – Aubrey and David, Team Ballroom Dance

3rd – Derek and Claire, Team Big Brother

4th – Emily and Molly, Team Long Lost Twins

Mirador de Ronda, Ronda, Spain

Teams are whisked away to Màlaga Airport, and their charter flight to a new destination. Once there, teams will be transported by Amazing Yellow Line to Reykjavík, Iceland, where teams make their way to Skógafoss in Skógar, and take a chartered helicopter to the Pit Start at Sólheimajökull Glacier. We are told that this leg is an inspired adventure, similar to those that the teams have been winning Expedia Reward Points for at the end of each leg.

Sólheimajökull Glacier, Mýrdalshreppur, Iceland

Clue: Welcome to Iceland! Climb Sólheimajökull Glacier and each team member must collect an Icelandic flag to get the next clue.

(Toyouke: “Great, now we gotta listen to everyone complain about heights again.”)

First Departure 1:00 pm

Luis/Michelle (1st)

Aubrey/David (2nd)

Second Departure 1:15 am

Derek/Claire (3rd)

Emily/Molly (4th) – and Emily’s leg is still hurting from 5 legs ago.

Teams get their clue in the following order:

1- Luis/Michelle

2- Aubrey/David

3- Derek/Claire

4- Emily/Molly

So teams climb the ice wall and get their clues in the following order:

1- Luis/Michelle

2- Aubrey/David

3- Derek/Claire

4- Emily/Molly

Teams are now instructed to drive themselves in the provided vehicles to Fljótshlíðarfoss to get their next clue. (Toyouke: “I'm kind of surprised these Land Rovers are so unforgiving in terms of the transmission. I thought more expensive cars were easier to deal with, or at least that has been my experience. “) Teams arrive in the following order:

1- Derek/Claire

2- Aubrey/David – who are following. . .

3- Luis/Michelle – who, for some reason, decide they need to turn around on a road they were told to follow until it ended. (Toyouke: “How are people lost? There's literally nothing here.”)

4- Emily/Molly

When they rip open the clue, teams get the eleventh roadblock.

ROADBLOCK:

Who’s feeling misty-eyed?

In this roadblock, one team member must abseil into a cave and collect the clue attached to the walls. Once complete, teams must finish a natural obstacle course to get back to their partners.

The following teammates take the Roadblock:

1- Derek – (Toyouke: “Derek has to do this one? But everyone else is even? “)

2- David – who can’t swim. (Toyouke: “Kind of surprised from a liability standpoint that they let someone who doesn't swim do a Roadblock entirely in a river.”) More on that later.

3- Luis

4- Molly

After much abseiling, teams complete the Roadblock in the following order:

1- Derek/Claire

2- Luis/Michelle - because Luis was able to pass David due to his swimming ability.

3- Aubrey/David

4- Emily/Molly – who almost caught up. (Toyouke: “An actual race! No editing! I missed that.”)

Teams are now instructed to drive themselves to the Silfra Fissure in Thingvellir National Park to get their next clue. Teams arrive in the following order:

1- Derek/Claire

2- Luis/Michelle

3- Aubrey/David

4- Emily/Molly

Teams are now instructed to put on snorkling gear and swim the Silfra Fissure between the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates in order to search for plaques that state 14 volcanic eruptions and the years they occurred in Iceland. When the swim is complete, teams must complete a quiz recalling the names of the eruptions and the years they occurred. If correct, the volcanologist will give them their next clue. If incorrect, teams must swim the fissure again in order to try the quiz again.

For reference, the 14 volcanic eruptions are:

2021 Fagradallsfjall

2011 Grimsvötn

2010 Eyjafjallajökull

2004 Grimsvötn

1991 Hekla

1973 Eldfell

1963 Surtsey

1875 Askja

1823 Katla

1766 Hekla

1625 Katla

1477 Torfajökull

1104 Hekla

934 Eldgjá

Much swimming and quiz taking ensues. So, teams complete the task in the following order:

1- Derek/Claire – Derek: “Claire has a picture-perfect memory, and I...am with Claire"

2- Luis/Michelle – who take two tries.

3- Emily/Molly – who take two tries. (Toyouke: “OK I take back my comment about how you have to be physical. Those girls saved themselves purely mentally.”)

4- Aubrey/David – who take two tries, and David freaks out about the swimming, and so when the twins pass them and they are looking at a third try they decide to take the 2 hour penalty for not completing the task. (Toyouke: “What are they supposed to do? He can't swim and they know they're in last. Do I blame him for not knowing how to swim the way we blame people for not knowing how to drive stick? ...a little? But after how many dance challenges everything is making me suspicious.”)

Teams are now instructed to drives themselves to Gullfoss Falls, the PIT STOP of the ninth leg of this racearoundtheworld. The last team to arrive WILL be eliminated!

1- Derek/Claire – who win Expedia Reward Points for a five night trip for 2 to London, England.

2- Luis/Michelle

3- Emily/Molly

4- Aubrey/David

And Aubrey and David are eliminated. Aubrey isn’t bitter and thought it was super cool to finally have Phil in front of her. David said you can’t put a price on this experience.

ORDER NOW:

1st – Derek/Claire

2nd – Luis/Michelle

3rd – Emily/Molly

Next week: Finale! Nashville! Memory Task! Until next time!
