Project Runway 1/20/22--"The Model as Muse" summary

Previously on “Project Runway”: everybody had to collaborate with hairstylists to make an outfit and a hairstyle that went together. Chasity won, and I saw a lot of complaining online because people didn't like her dress, but I thought it was fine. I mean people whined that it was tiger stripes and tigers aren't African. Because we have spent enough time forcing Aaron to be robbed of the win, he was eliminated. To be fair his outfit wasn't very good. But let's not pretend sending a naked model in a clear vinyl raincoat would have been OK. (click for more)

Chasity complains that it's very emotional and she feels that she can't celebrate because someone has to go home. Bones finds some wine for them, and then a producer appears to say Christian is working in a warehouse across the street and they should all go over. When they get there, Coco Rocha is there in the middle of a photoshoot. Coco is a supermodel? I've never heard of her but that doesn't mean anything. Christian says she is an editorial model, which should mean she's good at photos, not just runway walking. The challenge is to create an editorial look for a photoshoot with Coco. High fashion, so it doesn't have to be practical. The set and props are important. There is a pile of stuff over in a corner, and Christian says they can each have one prop. Oh and no runway show. I guess the judges are just going to look at the photos. Bones points out that having the same model for everyone makes the playing field level. I have seen a suggestion that having some people with “regular” models and some with plus-size models is unfair, but since pretty much everyone agrees that having the plus-sized models is important that they should make everyone do it. One week everyone has a plus-size model, one week it's “regular” models, one week petite, etc. I thought it was a good idea. Anyway, two days for this challenge.

The designers go back home to sketch. Shantall talks about texture and passion. Kristina for some reason wants to use a detail from each challenge so far and somehow put them together. We're reminded that the pose is important, not how the dress looks when walking. Mood is Mood. Bones knows he needs to be theatrical. Christian is grilling him and when Bones protests Christian says that there are only five of them so he has all the time in the world. Coral has some bright yellow. Shantall and Chasity both have red, and Christian tries to stir up shit by telling Chasity halfway through shopping. Chasity looks worried for a brief moment before saying she doesn't care because it's her first red gown and Shantall has done red before so whatever.

After shopping is over, they go back to pick out their props. Chasity gets to go first because she won last time, and then she can pick who goes next. They do this by scrolling pictures on tablets, instead of going back across the street. Chasity picks out a wooden pallet on the logic that Coco can do different things with it, like stand on it or next to it or whatever. Sure. Bones gets to go second, and he picks out poi balls, which are a pair of balls attached to a long chain that you light on fire and do fire dancing with. Is he going to light them on fire and hope his garment doesn't catch fire? Supposedly it's safe. Kristina is going to use a big blue plastic bin, like for trash. Coral wants a big industrial fan. Shantall is kind of salty she is going last, but she picks out a ladder.

Seven hours to work today. Bones has blue faux fur he's making into a vest, and a denim jacket. Chasity tells us they only have one fitting, so she's worried about making sure to have something to fit. Shantall has several layers of chiffon, trying to make texture. Christian comes in after a couple of hours to check on them, and immediately sees Bones, shirtless and wrapped in denim. Coral has a lot of yellow, and when she's describing her look as someone fighting the wind she starts crying. She's in her head. Christian tells her that her dress is too pretty. What does that even mean? She can't make something pretty? He says she doesn't do romantic and it's not her. I think she should do whatever. Bones has a long blue column and he says “fashion tornado”. Maybe a long coat, maybe a cape, maybe some fake bangs out of fabric. Christian tells him he always has ideas but he needs to pare them down. Kristina wants to make huge sleeves and also pants. Shantall says passion = fire which is pretty cliché but whatever. Does she have time to do it? I think Christian doesn't hate her idea but she has a lot of work to do. Chasity is sewing boning into her skirt, all in different directions, I think for volume. She can't really explain her idea, which frustrates Christian, and in the middle of her trying to explain she asks him for an autograph. I love their relationship of good-natured “you drive me insane” sibling vibes. They won't have a fitting until tomorrow. Bones is starting to worry that the denim is too matte compared to the dress, but it's too late to worry about fabric choice. He's just going to do the fitting and see. Coral has decided her look must be edgy, so she's adding to it.

Day Two. In the morning, Shantall gets to call home and see her husband and kid and sister. She gets extremely loud and animated. Her son is saying “mama” and she is yelling at the top of her lungs because this is the first time he's said it.

Three hours until the fitting. Chasity points out to Bones that with his coat, he's covering up the dress. Shantall shrieks that she's doing a sleeve like Chasity is doing. As in, she walks by and just yells about it. In confessional she says that she had some sleeves, but she's not going to use them because Chasity has sleeves and they already are both using red. I guess so. Shantall has to be herself, and she's won three times because the judges like her aesthetic. I'm not sure how this is an explanation for ditching the sleeves. Are you saying sleeves aren't “you”? Then why were you making them in the first place?

Model fitting. Seems like everyone is getting 20 to 30 minutes, I think. Coco is telling Coral that the photographer will be zoomed out and to think about the details. Then Christian is like “now you have to get her out of it” as if when they have regular models they don't have to get them out of the garments after the fitting? Kristina has all the pieces she is planning on, which is a big blue coat and big green pants and a blue dress. Coco reminds her that she's picked out a blue bin and it's a lot of blue and she should show some skin. I know most models don't get any say in their looks in general but is this a thing you can do when you're a “supermodel”? Because I'm so not used to the models having any opinions and my initial instinct is to be irritated and feel like she's being super bossy and difficult. The advice is lost on Kristina because she's focused on all the finishing. Bones is making a long do-rag. Christian is pissed because Bones is focusing on this instead of fixing his dress. Shantall has a dress that is half muslin still. She is not told it's too pretty. Chasity isn't ready, but Coco loves her inspiration of “Disney princess gone bad”. But then Coco basically says she can't sell the dress? Because there are too many options? My cable cut in and out here but I don't understand this. Maybe it's just that Chasity doesn't have the full dress so no one can plan how to shoot it. On the way out Christian says the designers will go one at a time for the shoot, and they have to have the looks finished by the end of the day today. So I guess if you have the last shoot, you can't work up to that point. That makes sense, because it would be unfair to the first person. Coco is going to have neutral hair and makeup, so you can't have what you want. But it'll be the same for everyone.

Lots of frantic working at the last minute. Bones helps everyone finish which is nice. Coral also finishes and she's offering help too. At one point both Bones and Coral are helping Chasity and Shantall is salty about this too. From what we're showed, Bones offered to help Kristina by spray painting some shoes, and then he helps Chasity. Then Coral came over to help Chasity also. I guess Chasity needs that much help, but it's not a great look. So I can't really blame Shantall for being upset when Chasity has two helpers and no one has come over to Shantall to offer to help her. She can't let the situation get in her head. Spoiler alert, Bones got on Twitter after the show and said they offered to help Shantall and were turned down? Rebuffed? Anyway I 100% believe the producers would decide they were making a storyline of “everyone hates Shantall” and cut this footage to make Bones and Coral look bad.

Back home everyone has a drink and talks about how tired they are. Bones makes drinks, I think, but they're too strong and Shantall and Coral pour them in the toilet.

Runway Day, except there's no runway today. Coco has shown up to hair and makeup with makeup already on. She also is telling hair and makeup what to do. Shantall tells us that her husband is a photographer, so she isn't used to other photographers. There is brief drama when she can't zip up the dress, but of course then it's fine. The judges appear, so I guess they're going to watch the shoots. Shantall: very long red gown, so long Coco is on a ladder and it's still dragging on the ground. The bodice is one-shouldered, with a weird piece under one arm. Like if you had a tight sleeve, but then only the bottom part? There's a loose panel down her back that she's flinging into the air for the photo. There was also supposed to be a bunch of layered chiffon for a texture, the thing that was taking her forever to do, but I don't see that anywhere. Was it part of the train? You can't see it at all.

Coral: yellow lace dress with a ton of ruffles at the bottom. It's a basic bodice with the triangles over the chest and some spaghetti straps and of course some strings outlining the triangles. It's tight through her hips so it reminds me of a flamenco costume. There is also a chiffon cape, in the yellow, although it might just be some chiffon panels sewn together as opposed to something with a distinct shape or design. There is a thick neckpiece of the lace, like a tall stiff collar that covers her entire neck and her shoulders. Then black platform leather booties. During her shoot the photographer tells her that it's a vertical photo but because of the fan she's using the cape is making it a very wide shot because it's streaming out so far behind her.

Chasity: red gown with one long sleeve. The top is a dark red with beading or sequins, and a mock turtleneck collar. There is one long tight sleeve and the shoulder is maybe a little puffy? Not like a leg of mutton sleeve, but it's not skin tight either. The skirt is in a lighter red, with some big ruffles at one hip with boning (the opposite hip from the sleeve). There is boning all through the skirt too, and it's cut like a mullet hem. Where the ruffles are, it's above the knee, and then the long part drapes over the rest of her legs and onto the floor. Chasity cannot stop talking about how amazing Coco is.

Bones: long slim gown in royal blue, in ruffles. It looks like horizontal pleats or strips of fabric all the way down the dress. There is a matching headpiece with what looks like fringe framing her face and then the same blue with strips covering her whole head. Either this is like a hooded cloak, or there is another piece over her shoulders. The neckline of the dress is that halter top style that comes to a point at her throat, but there are also sleeves and since it's all the same fabric you can't really tell what's sewn to what. There is a wide ribbon around her waist and criss-crossing under her arm, around her neck and then back under the other arm and I guess attached to her back? She's got the balls on a chain, and basically Bones attached blue fabric to them so she can fling them around. There is no giant denim cocoon like he had planned on.

Kristina: so there are shiny green pants, pretty loose but in a stiff fabric so they're not like palazzo pants. Over this is a blue dress, which I can't really get a good look at. I think it's a shift dress, so pretty fitted, and a high neck. I also think I saw that the sides lace up. It reminds me of a Chinese cheongsam. The coat is a slightly lighter blue with huge sleeves, that is lined in turquoise. And a scarf in the blue of the dress? I can't see anything here.

So back on the runway, they have the outfits on display and then they'll look at the photos. Shantall says her inspiration was her passion for designing. When they pan up her dress, you can sort of see the texture, but I'm not sure I would if I didn't know it was there. The fabric looks vaguely rough and I probably would have assumed that's just the fabric she bought. Coco is here too, to talk about working with each of them. The ladder was a great choice, and Coco liked working with her. She picked out the picture with the best facial expression. Brandon says it's rare for designers to be able to describe their looks in one word, but the minute Shantall says “passion” you immediately can tell that's her inspiration. The photo is great also, with some movement and good facial expression.

Coral talks about finding flowers and people thinking she's a fragile flower. She picked the loudest color and it filled up the dark warehouse. Nina says that culturally as Latinas they are supposed to be quiet but there is nothing quiet about Coral's work. The lace is all flowers, so it looks cool. Coco tells her to be less...something on her next shoot. I listened several times and I can't tell what she's saying, because it sounds like she's saying to be less pissed off, but that doesn't make any sense because then Coral says she was nervous and Coco tells her not to be nervous.

Chasity explains her Disney villain storyline. Brandon says it's 80s costume, but since this is editorial, in the photo it looks great. He's sure his mom had this dress. The photo she liked because it looks like she's planning. Nina doesn't think it's evil, it's more rock and roll, and it needs to be darker. She didn't exactly translate her idea to her garment. Coco wishes it was more epic in the photo? The photo is just her on top of a stack of wooden pallets, both hands to her head with her arms level to her shoulders and elbows out.

Bones says some stuff about tornadoes and poi balls and expression in her upper body. They've been asking everyone if they've done photoshoots before, and Bones admits he worked as a photographer's assistant for a long time. Coco says that explains a lot, because he was giving her so many instructions it frustrated everyone. The dress is a great color, and Nina says this is the most streamlined and conservative look they've seen from him. But it's very hard to photograph. Bones I guess chalks it up to miscommunication, but he phrases it in such a way that it makes it clear he blames the team for not hearing what he wanted.

Kristina talks about how she worked so many things from other challenges into this outfit. It's very modern and she's the only one using multiple colors. But Nina didn't really like the color, or the prop. Bones also made something blue, but his dress is darker. I think Kristina's is very close to the color of the bin. Nina also says there were better pictures to choose. She's facing the camera, and flipping the coat off to one side. Elaine doesn't agree, because she says if this look went down the runway, she'd like it less than she does when looking at the photo.

Shantall has passion, and her vision is super clear. She translated her idea to her garment and then to the photo. Coco says she understood exactly what her inspiration was and what to do. They love Shantall. Coral thought about all the details, and Brandon loved that her explanation made total sense. Coco tells them that just from the dresses on display next to the runway, Coral's dress isn't her favorite, but she likes the photo a lot more.

Chasity's dress is costumey but Coco loved working with her. Brandon starts talking about taste and Nina points out that she's inconsistent. She's either winning or in the bottom. No one knows what Bones is thinking or doing, and his vision isn't refined. Coco says he would do things like ask her to lift her arms when she couldn't because of the sleeves. Nina wanted him to be this sophisticated much earlier in the competition. Brandon hates that Kristina picked out a big bin to work with. Nina is still fixated on how she gave them pants. Did she get lucky, per Elaine, or did she waste her potential, per Nina? Nina says the picture offends her, which is just so over-the-top dramatic it's hilarious.

Shantall is the winner. I guess we could have guessed with her whole “everyone hates me” storyline. Coral is in. Nina admits to the bottom three that the judges had different opinions on everything, but they did agree to eliminate Bones. Brandon says the dress was restrictive and it affected the photo. Then he tells him to lean into who he is and they're like think outside the box except that Nina just finished raving that this was his best garment because it was actually sophisticated. Bones wishes he could have gotten his point across better in his photo. Back in the Scrap Bin he says they knew, and I saw someone saying it was clear Bones knew he wasn't making the finale and I can buy that. When Christian shows up Bones runs to get a do-rag to put on him and it's hilarious. Christian says to keep being himself and call him anytime for help. It's just getting started.

Next week: show how your brand is relevant in “this next wave of fashion”. Make them want to see your collection. I am sure there is an excellent chance they “can't decide” and no one is eliminated so there are four people in the finale.

The aftershow begins with Bones in a long gray wig saying the aftershow is better than Ellen. Sure. He says the challenge was to give them a photo but not a look, so he gets the elimination, but his garment was the best. Christian rolls his eyes and says Shantall made haute couture in two days so what are you thinking. Coco couldn't move in Bones's gown because the skirt was too tight. Bones knew everyone else would go for volume so he wanted to go in the other direction. They joke about Bones taking criticism from Christian, and then Christian changes the subject to ask about how they all excluded Shantall from the group. Bones says that Shantall is aggressive about her competitiveness, and then the clip they put is from when she was getting buttons and Kristina just ran up to the counter to demand ribbon. And Shantall was like “they're helping me already” which was true and I don't see the problem. You can't cut in line. So Bones says that she was different off camera, and when pressed explains that for example the cameras would leave and she'd tell everyone that she's not too attached to them because they're her competition, and I guess Bones thought it stuck out a lot compared to everyone else having heart-to-hearts. I mean to be fair she didn't seem that upset when she was talking about how she was being excluded. I want to know if this is going to start a bunch of drama. Currently Chasity and Bones are on Twitter making comments about everything and saying Shantall yelled at Coral early on in the challenge and that's why they excluded her.

Then they play a game called “C-C knows better”. Christian picked out photos for each look that he thinks are better than the ones everyone picked out. Honestly I like the photos Christian picked out. The one he picked out for Bones shows her silhouette and how she was constricted without having her unable to move, if that makes sense. We find out Bones calls his wigs “patties” because of Patti LaBelle. This one is Icy Patti. We discuss the rocky start to the season when Bones basically told his team not to listen to Christian's opinions. Bones thinks Shantall is going to win, but maybe Kristina or Chasity deserve to win.
