TAR 33, Recap Leg 5, 1/26/22

 

Welcome to Leg 5! Last time, on Welcome to The Amazing Race. . . Again!, 5 teams returned to continue their race around the world in Switzerland, with two eliminated teams, bringing the number of teams back to 7. Sheri struggled at the Roadblock due to her fear of heights, but Cop Rock really screwed up at the Detour. AGAIN. And were eliminated. AGAIN. Who will be eliminated. . . next? (click for more)

Arrival at the pit stop last episode:

We are informed that as part of the pandemic, teams will depart in groups, separated at 15 minute intervals from all Pit Stops from now on. (Toyouke: “I get not sticking to departure times but why do we need to release teams in pairs?”) The number of teams at each departure time may vary, however.

7:30 AM Ryan/Dusty (1st)

Clue: Drive yourselves to the Verzasca Dam in Tenero-Contra.

7:30 AM Kim/Penn (2nd)

7:45 AM Raquel/Cayla (3rd) – who are convinced that slow and steady wins the race.

7:45 AM Lulu/Lala (4th)

8:00 AM Akbar/Sheri (5th)

8:00 AM Arun/Natalia (6th) – who aren’t getting off to a stellar start because they lost their car.

When they rip open the clue, teams get the fourth roadblock.

ROADBLOCK:

Who wants to get down with the Travelocity Roaming Gnome?

In this roadblock (and Season 14 Switchback), one team member must complete a 722 foot bungee off the Verzasca Dam, the highest bungee jump in Europe. Once completed with the Gnome, teams get a microscopic clue.

(Toyouke: “Stupid gnome.”)

Teams drive and arrive at the Dam in the following order:

1- Kim/Penn

2- Ryan/Dusty

3- Lulu/Lala

4- Akbar/Sheri

5- Raquel/Cayla

6- Arun/Natalia

The following teammates take the Roadblock:

1- Dusty

2- Kim

3- Lala

4- Sheri – who has to take it again due to a weight requirement.

5- Cayla

6- Natalia

After much bungee jumping, teams complete the Roadblock in the following order:

1- Ryan/Dusty

2- Kim/Penn

3- Lulu/Lala

4- Akbar/Sheri

5- Raquel/Cayla

6- Arun/Natalia

Teams are now instructed to drive themselves to Lugano and make their way to the Piazza Carlo Battaglini in order to search for their next clue. Teams arrive in Lugano in the following order:

1- Ryan/Dusty

2- Lulu/Lala

3- Kim/Penn

4- Akbar/Sheri

5- Raquel/Cayla

6- Arun/Natalia – who started to go to Locarno first.

Teams open their clues and we get the fifth Detour Clue.

DETOUR:

Bartender Race OR Sausage Encase

*Bartender Race: Teams pick up 12 bottles of wine and 12 bags of chestnuts (plus wine and chestnuts for the Gnome) from street vendors in Lugano. Then teams go to the Salita degli Angioli, a 400 foot staircase and climb it to the cocktail party. Once all the items have been approved by the head bartender, teams can get their next clue.

*Sausage Encase: Teams make their way Gabbani Salumeria and pick up a cooler with ingredients to make Luganega sausage. They must create 9 feet of sausage and split it into four spiraled portions. If they bring the correct portions to the head butcher, teams can get their next clue.

3- Kim/Penn choose Bartender Race

4- Akbar/Sheri choose Bartender Race – (Toyouke: “Why did they pick the physical Detour when they are so out of shape?”)

5- Raquel/Cayla choose Sausage Encase

6- Arun/Natalia choose Sausage Encase

Much item carrying and sausage making ensues. So, teams complete the detour in the following order:

1- Ryan/Dusty

2- Lulu/Lala

3- Kim/Penn

4- Akbar/Sheri

5- Raquel/Cayla

6- Arun/Natalia

Teams are now instructed to get their clue from the Gnome, a photo of Parco Ciani, the PIT STOP of the fifth leg of this racearoundtheworld. The last team to arrive MAY be eliminated!

1- Ryan/Dusty – who win a trip for two from Travelocity (of course) to Dominica (which Phil pronounces Dom-ih-NEEK-uh).

2- Lulu/Lala

3- Kim/Penn

4- Raquel/Cayla

5- Akbar/Sheri

6- Arun/Natalia – (Toyouke: “I like them but the navigation was just so bad.”)

Arun and Natalia finish so late that the Pit Stop Greeter and her dog had to leave, so Phil is alone to tell Arun and Natalia are last again. However, this is a Non-Elimination Leg and they are still in the Race! However, they will be the sole team to leave in the third timeslot at the beginning of their next leg.
