Welcome to Leg 1 of The Amazing Race 34! It’s been a while, and now that COVID has overstayed its welcome, we have a lot of changes. First, we get overhead shots of Munich, Germany, the starting line for this Race. Teams were all flown here for the start, loaded on a giant log raft, and taken on a German Log Flume ride of sorts. (Toyouke: “LOL who set them up for this log flume ride? Give them a raise.”) But after that, we get to meet the teams. (click for more)
So the twelve teams for The Amazing Race 34 are:
Luis and Michelle, Team Miami Croquetas, who have been together for 13 years, but married for 6. Michelle dances for Pitbull and Luis is a firefighter. They’ve got energy. (Toyouke: “Oh look who is already demanding attention.”)
Derek and Claire, Team Big Brother, who met on Big Brother and have been dating for 8 months. They could be fun.
Tim and Rex, Team T-Rex, are friends and golfing buddies. Rex used to coach in the NFL. He tells the other teams this. (Toyouke: “Rex you moron you don't reveal to everyone that you're famous! Now they know you probably don't need the money!”)
Abby and Will, Team High School Sweethearts, have known each other for twenty years but been dating for eight. They have also been watching the show together regularly. (Toyouke: “Abby needs to chill. Superfans are better when they're not shrieking about it all the time.”)
Quinton and Mattie, Team NFL Cheerleaders, were Rams Cheerleaders. That’s all we get.
Emily and Molly, Team Long Lost Twins, are identical twins who met a year ago after being adopted from Korea by different Jewish families on different sides of the US. They are trying to make up for 36 years of lost time.
Linton and Sharik, Team Jamaican Me Crazy, are Jamaican immigrants who travel the world vicariously through the Amazing Race.
Marcus and Michael, Team Military Bros, are active in the Air Force and Army, and although they spend a lot of time with family, they are apart a lot and are using the Race to reconnect.
Aastha and Nina, Team EnGayged, met on a dating app and have been together for four years and are recently engaged. There you have it.
Aubrey and David, Team Ballroom Dance, met at a dance studio when David went to get dance lessons and he partnered with Aubrey. They have now been dating four years.
Rich and Dom, Team Motivation, are married motivational speakers. They have been together for eight years and married for three. They are a hot mess.
Glenda and Lumumba, Team Motivation, are 40+ year old newlyweds. Glenda thought Lumumba was too short when she met him. Glenda’s T-Shirt: "I prayed for a man like him" Lumumba’s T-Shirt: "I'm him" (Toyouke: “We HAVE to get these for Chris and Patty IMMEDIATELY”)
Nymphenburg Palace, Munich, Germany
Phil assembles the teams and tells them about all of the firsts of the new season. This si the first time the American Race has not started in the USA. There will be no Non-Elimination Legs, which means with 12 teams there are only 10 Legs. The first leg has a new element, The Scramble, where teams can complete tasks in any order. Oh, and the first team to finish will win ONE MILLION DOLLARS (US$1000000)! Phil lets teams know that the first clue is on their bags, and the clue contains the three addresses of the tasks. Then teams pick a car to drive themselves to the locations, which have a map of Munich in the car. Then oh so sexy Phil does his standard patter: “Ready? The world is waiting for you. Good luck, travel safe. Cue Phil's eyebrow pop. (Kmanpat: “I’ve missed the eyebrow pop.“) GO!” Who will be eliminated . . . tonight? (Toyouke: “I did miss this show.”)
Clue: Welcome to Munich, Germany! Complete the three tasks of the Scramble in any order, and then use the clues you receive to find and travel to the Pit Stop! A map is provided in the provided vehicles.
So, teams get their introduction to a new type of element, the Scramble.
SCRAMBLE:
ROLL / SAW / SMASH
*Roll: Teams drive themselves to Luitpoldpark and roll a beer keg through an obstacle course in 55 seconds. If completed in the time, the referee will give them their next clue.
*Saw: Teams drive themselves to Seehaus Biergarten in Englischer Garten and use a tandem saw of cut a piece of log while listening to Bavarian Music. Once complete, the judge will give them their next clue.
*Smash: Teams drive themselves to Augustiner-Keller Biergarten and use tools to chisel out a clue trapped in ice.
Once teams have all three parts to the clue, they may travel to the Pit Stop, Friedensengel, which is closest to Saw, but teams are unaware of this.
(Toyouke: “Oh so that's it then? Three tasks and then Pit Stop? AND a drive yourself.“) So, teams get their clues (Toyouke:” OH NO you did not just have a deliberate shot of all the cameramen. This show is so highly skilled at not showing cameramen!”, find their cars, use their maps, and depart Nymphenburg in the following order:

Also, has "slow and steady" ever won the Race? I am hard pressed to think of an example. Also also, the repeated shots of everyone else leaving the area, complete with labels, is amazing.”)
Because it is hard to keep track of who goes where in what order, I’m going to tackle the Scramble task by task. I’ll also list which task this is for each team in parentheses when they arrive.
ROLL
Teams travel to Luitpoldpark and arrive in the following order:

2- Derek/Claire (1) – (Toyouke: “OK so the Big Brother team isn't completely useless.”)
3- Aubrey/David (1) – Aubrey: "I hope it's a dance challenge" (Toyouke: “I hope you break up. I can smell it.”)

Some teams arrive together, most teams take two tries to get the hang of thing. But eventually, teams roll beer barrels successfully and get their clues in the following order:

Teams travel to Biergarten Seehaus in Englischer Garten and arrive in the following order:
1- Rich/Dom (1) – (Toyouke: “See I told you constant motivational speaking was going to be annoying.”)

4- Luis/Michelle (2)
5- Aastha/Nina (2)
6- Abby/Will (2)

10- Marcus/Michael (3) – Marcus: "I've lived here before." And yet, you got so horribly lost getting to this task.

This one takes a moment, as you have to get into the teamwork of the saw. (Toyouke: “How is sawing logs related to Oktoberfest?”) After much sawing, teams get their clues from the judge in the following order:

When they rip open the clue, teams get the first roadblock.

In this roadblock, one team member must smash through the block of ice to reach the clue.
The following teammates take the Roadblock (Toyouke: “Who was the guy who had to break the ice ball or whatever and decided to get naked? Please let someone do that.”):

Teams are now instructed to travel by boat to the PIT STOP, the Friedensengel. (Toyouke: “I didn't even think about trying to guess where the Pit Stop would be so you could use that to plan the order.”) This is the first pit stop in a racearoundtheworld. The last team to arrive WILL be eliminated!
