TAR 33, Recap Leg 1, 1/5/22

Welcome to Leg 1 of The Amazing Race 33! It’s been a long time since we’ve been together; in fact, this season was interrupted by COVID, so we’ll get to see some race pre-COVID and some race during COVID, which are probably going to look rather different. However, we still for some reason get the staggered cell phone start from TAR28 (you know, the social media stars season.) Now, this part gets a little crazy, but in the hustle and bustle of a phone call from Phil and a remote start, we get to meet the teams. (click for more):

So the eleven teams for The Amazing Race 33 are:

Departing from JFK

Lulu and Lala, Team iHeartTwinning, who are twins. The do everything together, and even host a radio show together. I’m going to get sick of them real quick.

Caro and Ray, Team Long Distance Reality, are a dating couple who met on Love Island. They’ve only been dating 7 months (Well, at least when the show was originally taped), and they are still living on opposite coasts.

Akbar and Sheri, The Teacher Cagers, are a married couple from New Jersey. They met playing basketball in college and have now been married 17 years. They’ve also never left the country, so this will be fun.

Departing from LAX

Taylor and Isaiah, Team Gay YouTube Husbands. Because we need another gay couple on this show. They met on Facebook (Taylor: “We met on a website called LumberjacksOnly.com”) and got married in August 2019 and are YouTube famous for doing a flash mob at their wedding. Which isn’t even new anymore.

Anthony and Spencer, Team Good Samaritan, have been best friends since childhood, but really gained presence when they helped stop a terrorist attack on a Thalys train. Oh, and they acted in a Clint Eastwood movie about the attack.

Departing from CLT

Raquel and Cayla, The Flight Attendants, are, you guessed it, flight attendants. They are a self proclaimed hot mess. But they also like wine. (Toyouke: “I don't like the flight attendants already.”)

Kim and Penn, The YouTube Parents, make weird family videos and post them on YouTube as their job. (Toyouke: “Screw these people exploiting their kids for social media.”) They are very excitable.

Connie and Sam, Team Blind Side, are married, and have two kids, but Sam also coaches football and essentially adopted a kid from the team, who is the bonus son. The bonus son is now going to West Point.

Departing from ORD

Ryan and Dusty, Team Not Guilty, are friends. Ryan was wrongfully convicted of murder and spent ten years in jail. Why do I feel like he’s going to talk about this every episode? (Toyouke: "See? Those boys would be in St. Louis, why would they go all the way to Chicago to fly? They wouldn't. They just wanted to make smaller groups for some dumb reason so they have to group up.”)

Michael and Moe, Team Cop Rock, are cops for the Buffalo Police Department. Someone caught them singing together and posted the video on YouTube. There’s a lot of people on this season who somehow are Internet Famous, for being regular people.

Arun and Natalia, Team Bollywood Bonding, are father and daughter from Detroit. They are superfans of the show, and it shows.

Anyway, Phil calls the teams and tells them to get to the nearest airport and fly to London, England to find their first clue in Trafalgar Square. (Toyouke: “While I did miss this show, I do not like this lack of starting line business.”) Oh, and the first team to finish will win ONE MILLION DOLLARS (US$1000000)! Then oh so sexy Phil does his standard patter: “Ready? The world is waiting for you. Good luck, travel safe. Cue Phil's eyebrow pop. (Kmanpat: “I’ve missed the eyebrow pop.“) GO!” Who will be eliminated . . . tonight? (Toyouke: “I did miss this show.”)

New York City, New York, USA; Los Angeles, California, USA; Charlotte, North Carolina, USA; and Chicago, Illinois, USA

Teams head to the nearest airport.

Clue: Fly to London, England, United Kingdom! Once there, take a taxi to Trafalgar Square and find one of the moving phone boxes to get your next clue. Note that each phone box only has a limited number of clues.

So, teams make their ways to their respective airports to catch their flights.

Flight JFK to LHR

1) Lulu/Lala

2) Caro/Ray

3) Akbar/Sheri

Flight LAX to LHR

1) Taylor/Isaiah

2) Anthony/Spencer

Flight CLT to LHR

1) Raquel/Cayla

2) Kim/Penn

3) Connie/Sam

Flight ORD to LHR

1) Ryan/Dusty

2) Michael/Moe

3) Arun/Natalia

So, teams board their flights and the FOUR Amazing Yellow Lines all magically get to Heathrow at the same time. Who knew that customs was that crazy? (Toyouke: “Oh and then they ALL arrive in London at the same time?? Please.”) Anyway, teams arrive in the following order:

1- Raquel/Cayla

2- Anthony/Spencer

3- Akbar/Sheri

4- Lulu/Lala

5- Kim/Penn

6- Caro/Ray

7- Taylor/Isaiah

8- Arun/Natalia

9- Connie/Sam

10- Ryan/Dusty

11- Michael/Moe

Teams now travel by taxi to Trafalgar Square and find walking phone boxes with clues (Toyouke: “These poor men who have to stand around in these dumb costumes.”) in the following order:

1- Raquel/Cayla

2- Kim/Penn

3- Caro/Ray – who went to the first one, but were denied for lack of clues.

4- Lulu/Lala

5- Anthony/Spencer

6- Ryan/Dusty

7- Taylor/Isaiah

8- Michael/Moe

9- Arun/Natalia

10- Akbar/Sheri

11- Connie/Sam – who get horribly lost. (Toyouke: “I mean sometimes you get a bad cab.”) And then keep finding clueless phone boxes. (Toyouke: “It is kind of a dick move to have all the guys still in the square even though only one has a clue left and there's only one team left.”)

Teams are now instructed to travel on foot to Buckingham Palace and find their next clue at Canada Gate. Teams find Canada Gate in the following order:

1- Raquel/Cayla

2- Ryan/Dusty

3- Caro/Ray

4- Anthony/Spencer

5- Kim/Penn

6- Michael/Moe

7- Akbar/Sheri

8- Taylor/Isaiah

9- Arun/Natalia

10- Connie/Sam

11- Lulu/Lala – who now take their turn at getting horribly lost.

And we get the first Detour Clue.

DETOUR:

Artist’s Den OR Digiben

*Artist’s Den: Teams travel to Mess Hall at Immersive LDN on Moulton Street and put together a piece of street art and paste it on a wall. When all the edges match perfectly, the curator will give them their next clue.

*Digiben: Teams travel through London on a time travelling tour. First, they must travel on foot to find a bobby in Parliament Square at Big Ben, then make their way on foot to Little Ben at Victoria station and see the promoter. Once there, teams can either walk or take a taxi to Piccadilly Circus Tube Stop and find Digiben, who will give them their next clue.

(Toyouke: “The Digiben Detour is so much running. It has to be faster to just go make some art. And why would you take this one if you don't want to run? Also, I think The Amazing Race would do "just stick stuff on the wall" because they've had dumber tasks before. I mean I'm glad it makes the Detour less lopsided but let's not pretend "put stuff on the wall" isn't a Detour they'd do.”)

Teams arrive at their Detours in the following order:

1- Raquel/Cayla choose Digiben – Cayla: “Big Ben is a big ass clock!” Raquel: "I was just here at Piccadilly Circus two weeks ago!" (Toyouke: “You just have to go down into the station and look for a DJ. You don't have an advantage.”)

2- Ryan/Dusty choose Digiben

3- Caro/Ray choose Artist’s Den

4- Anthony/Spencer choose Digiben

5- Kim/Penn choose Artist’s Den – and Penn say he has hyperfocus. (Toyouke: “"I have ADHD but there's this thing called hyperfocus it's like a superpower" shut up Penn.”) That could get him into trouble.

6- Michael/Moe choose Artist’s Den – (Toyouke: “They just slapped all the pages up there I love it.”)

7- Akbar/Sheri choose Digiben – but Sheri is slow going, and Akbar gets tough.

8- Taylor/Isaiah choose Artist’s Den

9- Arun/Natalia choose Artist’s Den

10- Connie/Sam choose Digiben – (Toyouke: “Why did you pick this Detour when you don't know what a bobby is.”) Also, Sam points at Westminster Abbey and asks, “Is this Big Ben?” (Toyouke: “It's not like Big Ben is iconic or anything.”)

11- Lulu/Lala choose Artist’s Den

After much London wandering and puzzle completion, teams complete the Detour in the following order:

1- Anthony/Spencer

2- Ryan/Dusty

3- Raquel/Cayla

4- Kim/Penn

5- Caro/Ray

6- Akbar/Sheri

7- Connie/Sam

8- Taylor/Isaiah

9- Arun/Natalia

10- Michael/Moe

11- Lulu/Lala

Teams are now instructed to travel to The Chipping Forecast and find the Queen and Boris Johnson having a nosh to get their next clue. Teams arrive at The Chipping Forecast in the following order:

1- Ryan/Dusty

2- Anthony/Spencer

3- Raquel/Cayla

4- Kim/Penn – Kim: “We are very sweaty but happy to meet you.”

5- Caro/Ray

6- Akbar/Sheri

7- Connie/Sam

8- Taylor/Isaiah

9- Arun/Natalia

10- Lulu/Lala

11- Michael/Moe

Teams are now instructed to travel by boat to the PIT STOP, The Natural History Museum. This is the first pit stop in a racearoundtheworld. The last team to arrive WILL be eliminated!

1- Anthony/Spencer – who win a trip for 2 from Travelocity to Turks & Caicos. There will be eating, snorkeling and massages.

2- Ryan/Dusty

3- Raquel/Cayla

4- Kim/Penn

5- Caro/Ray

6- Akbar/Sheri

7- Connie/Sam

8- Taylor/Isaiah

9- Arun/Natalia

10- Lulu/Lala

11- Michael/Moe

And Michael and Moe are eliminated. They were happy to represent Buffalo, and Phil thanks them for their service as officers. They then sing us out. (Toyouke: “Wait, You had all those people everywhere and then NO GREETER?!?!”)

ORDER NOW:

1st – Anthony/Spencer

2nd – Ryan/Dusty

3rd – Raquel/Cayla

4th – Kim/Penn

5th – Caro/Ray

6th – Akbar/Sheri

7th – Connie/Sam

8th – Taylor/Isaiah

9th – Arun/Natalia

10th – Lulu/Lala

Next time: London! During the day! Until next time!
