TAR25, Recap Leg 2, 10/3/14

Welcome to Leg 2! Last time, on TAR8 Didn’t Leave the US on the First Leg, Why Should We?, teams raced from the original departure city of New York to the capital city of the US Virgin Islands.  We find out the winning team of the leg gets the Save, to be used on themselves before leg 9 to keep themselves from elimination.  We have a Roadblock reminiscent of TAR22, that caused three teams to take a time penalty and race to the Pit Stop.  The Dentists got the Save, and the Realtors finished last in a foot race, causing their elimination.  Who will be eliminated. . . next? Clue: Fly 4000 miles to London, England, United Kingdom!  There are only two flights available, one for six teams and one for four.  Once there, take a taxi to the Tower Bridge to get your next clue.

And then the chiron guy said screw this and didn’t bother to give departure times for anyone else.

So teams make their way to Cyril E. King Airport to head across the Atlantic.  Teams arrive in the following order:

5- Adam/Bethany – where we find Bethany has lost a shoe, which is why she is wearing sandals.

Teams get their flights to London in the following order:

We now take the Amazing Red and Blue Lines across the Atlantic to London.  Teams arrive in the following order:

Teams now get taxis and quickly move to the Tower Bridge.  (Toyouke: "There two people in outfits covered in mother-of-pearl buttons and no one thinks this is weird.") Teams arrive and get their clue in the following order:

4- Kym/Alli

DETOUR:

About Face OR Pancake Race

*About Face: Teams must travel to Somerset House, dress up as the Queen’s guards, and perform a traditional Changing of the Guard ceremony.  Once the ceremony has been executed precisely to the approval of the parade captain, teams receive their next clue.

*Pancake Race: Teams travel to Victoria Tower Gardens, dress up as chefs, and bake a pancake (Read: crepe).  Once the crepe met the approval of the head chef, teams had to race around a course while flipping the pancake.  Once the course was completed with sufficient pancake flipping and under 1:15, the judge would give them their next clue.

To their credit, these tasks were hard and the judges were picky.  So, teams complete the detour in the following order:

Teams are now instructed to travel by train  from Paddington Station to Oxford.  Once there, teams are to search the water’s edge at Magdalen Bridge to get their next clue.  Teams arrive at Paddington and get trains in the following order:

Train 1

2) Kym/Alli

1) Keith/Whitney

2) Dennis/Isabelle

3) Shelley/Nici

After the train ride, teams arrive in Oxford in the following order:

When teams read the Magdalen Bridge clue, they find that they are going to have to punt a traditional punting boat around the River Cherwell.  One team member was to stand on the flat Cambridge end to propel themselves through the water, while the other team member stands on the Oxford side waving a flag.  Once they had completed one lap around Magdalen College Island and returned to the boathouse, they would receive their next clue.

Teams punt and get their clue in the following order:

1- Adam/Bethany  

2- Misti/Jim – who stand on the wrong ends of the boat and have to do the entire task twice, as do . . .

3- Kym/Alli 

4- Keith/Whitney  

5- Tim/Te Jay

6- Michael/Scott

7- Amy/Maya

8- Brooke/Robbie

9- Shelley/Nici – who get horribly turned around.  And Nici had to pee.

10- Dennis/Isabelle

Teams are now instructed to travel to Christ Church College and tip their bowler for their next clue.  Teams arrive in the following order:

1- Adam/Bethany  

2- Misti/Jim

3- Kym/Alli 

4- Keith/Whitney  

5- Tim/Te Jay

6- Michael/Scott

7- Amy/Maya

8- Brooke/Robbie

9- Shelley/Nici – and Nici sobs all the way to the next clue.

10- Dennis/Isabelle – and Isabelle sobs all the way to the next clue.

Once there, teams received two bowler hats and two umbrellas each.  When they tipped their bowler hat, the inside revealed a clue to the Pit Stop, Churchill’s Birthplace.  When they opened the umbrella, instructions for finding the Express Pass appeared.

EXPRESS PASS:

An Express Pass is a ticket that allows a team to bypass any one task during the race. Once they collect the Express Pass, they may continue racing.  This Express Pass is located at The Bear Inn.  Only one Express Pass is available at this time, and it must be used before the end of Leg 9.

Teams look for the Express Pass in the following order:

1- Adam/Bethany

After much locating of the Express Pass, they return to the race and, with the other teams, find now that they must travel to Blenheim Palace, the PIT STOP of the second leg of this racearoundtheworld.  The last team to arrive WILL be eliminated!

1- Adam/Bethany – who win a trip for two to the Ice Hotel in Sweden.

2- Misti/Jim

3- Kym/Alli – who dress up as Charlie Chaplin for the occasion.

4- Keith/Whitney

5- Tim/Te Jay

6- Michael/Scott

And the YDC is out. They lament at how prepared they were for the race and that it shouldn’t be over for them yet.  Whatever.
