TAR25, Recap Leg 5, 10/24/14

Welcome to Leg 5! Last time, on It May Be Mating Season, teams raced from the Shetland Islands down to Copenhagen, where the Cyclists took an early lead.  The Dentists fell completely apart, and the Flight Attendants were passive aggressive towards each other.  In the end, Kym and Alli won two cars, Shelley and Nici didn’t kill each other, and Misti and Jim tried to use the Save, but silly Phil wouldn’t let them as it was a non-elimination leg.  Who will be eliminated. . . next? Clue: Fly 2000 miles to Marrakesh, Morocco!  Once there, make your way to Jemma El-Fnaa and search for the Food Cart Garage to get your next clue.

1:59 AM Shelley/Nici (6th) – and Shelley voiceovers that Nici left home at age 17.  No wonder they are at each other’s throats.

Teams discover in reading the clue that they must head to a travel agency first, and they arrive in the following order:

1- Kym/Alli

2- Brooke/Robbie

3- Keith/Whitney

7- Adam/Bethany

8- Misti/Jim

Teams arrive at the travel agent and find the earliest flight pattern to Morocco gets them all in at 3:15 pm.  So, teams leave and arrive at the airport in the following order:

1- Kym/Alli

2- Brooke/Robbie

3- Keith/Whitney

4- Amy/Maya 

5- Tim/Te Jay

6- Shelley/Nici

7- Adam/Bethany

8- Misti/Jim

The Amazing Blue Line takes us across the Mediterranean to Morocco, where teams arrive in the following order:

1- Misti/Jim

2- Kym/Alli

3- Brooke/Robbie

4- Shelley/Nici

5- Adam/Bethany

6- Keith/Whitney

7- Tim/Te Jay  

8- Amy/Maya

Teams make their way to Jemaa El-Fnaa and all seem to arrive within minutes of each other.  In the process of finding the food cart garage, Misti and Jim find their Speed Bump.

SPEED BUMP:

A Speed Bump is a task that must be performed by the last place team on a non-elimination leg. Once they complete this task, they may return to the place where the Speed Bump occurred and continue the leg. In this speed bump, teams must travel to Le Cadeau Berbère and pick up ten Moroccan rugs.  They must then take them to the Riad Monceau Hotel and hang them on a wire for sale.  Once the rugs are hung, they may continue racing.

Teams complete the Speed Bump in the following order:

1- Misti/Jim

After much rug hanging, they continue with the rest of the teams in find the clue in the following order:

1- Keith/Whitney

2- Shelley/Nici

3- Tim/Te Jay

4- Kym/Alli 

5- Brooke/Robbie

6- Adam/Bethany

7- Amy/Maya

8- Misti/Jim

Teams are now instructed to Cart It Out!  (Toyouke: “Yet another random task. This seems like half a Detour. I mean I know a regular Detour is coming up because of the U-Turn. Still.”)  Teams choose a marked food cart and help the owner set up shop for the evening.  Once complete, teams get their next clue.

So, teams set up lots of food carts and finish in the following order:

1- Keith/Whitney – Whitney: “I think the French guy likes me.”

2- Kym/Alli

3- Brooke/Robbie

4- Shelley/Nici

5- Amy/Maya

6- Adam/Bethany

7- Tim/Te Jay

8- Misti/Jim

Teams are now instructed to make their way on foot to Bab Debbagh Tannery to get their next clue.  Teams get that clue in the following order:

1- Keith/Whitney

2- Amy/Maya

3- Brooke/Robbie

4- Adam/Bethany

5- Tim/Te Jay

6- Kym/Alli

7- Shelley/Nici

8- Misti/Jim

And teams get the third roadblock clue.

ROADBLOCK:

Who enjoys a game of hide and deliver?

In this roadblock, roadblockers must enter the tannery and get three goat hides and finish removing all of the hair from them.  Once the hides are prepared, they must gather three bundles of previously prepared hides and take them by bicycle to the cobbler to get a receipt.  Once teams deliver the receipt to the tanner, he will give teams their next clue.

The following teammates take the Roadblock:

4- Bethany – Adam: “It just like shaving the hair off my back!”  (Toyouke: “No, that's not OK to say out loud on TV.”)

After much hide cleaning and delivering, teams complete the Roadblock in the following order:

1- Keith/Whitney  

2- Shelley/Nici

3- Brooke/Robbie 

4- Adam/Bethany

5- Misti/Jim

6- Kym/Alli

7- Amy/Maya 

8- Tim/Te Jay

Actually, this was the best order I could eek out, there was a lot of pushing and shoving, and Keith getting in front of Shelley and Nici while his partner was nowhere nearby.  Whatever, entertainment.  Once everyone gets their clue, teams must travel on foot to Ben Youssef Madrasa to get their next clue.

Teams arrive in the following order:

1- Adam/Bethany  

2- Kym/Alli

3- Brooke/Robbie 

4- Shelley/Nici

5- Keith/Whitney

6- Misti/Jim

7- Amy/Maya 

8- Tim/Te Jay

And we get the Detour Clue.

DETOUR:

Twirl Time OR Tea Time

*Twirl Time: Teams travel on foot to Bob Magic Music to get their costume and musical instruments.  Once teams are comfortable with the instruments, teams make their way to Jemaa El-Fnaa and perform with the gnawa music troupe.  One member plays the drum while the other plays the krakebs and swings a tassel on their hat around for a minute.  Once complete teams get their next clue.

*Tea Time: Teams travel on foot to Le Paradis du Thee to pick up a tea set and the required elements to make mint tea and travel to Palais Gharnata and perform a traditional Moroccan tea ceremony.  Once the tea master approves of their work, teams get their next clue.

1- Adam/Bethany choose Tea Time 

2- Misti/Jim choose Tea Time

3- Brooke/Robbie choose Tea Time

4- Keith/Whitney choose Twirl Time – and Bald Snark to Tea Time after getting frustrated with spinning their heads around. 

5- Kym/Alli choose Twirl Time

6- Amy/Maya choose Twirl Time

7- Shelley/Nici choose Twirl Time

8- Tim/Te Jay choose Tea Time

After much tea pouring and head spinning, teams complete the detour in the following order:

1- Adam/Bethany – (Toyouke: “OK how hilarious is it that the surfers got through first because Bethany is literally unable to hold the tray improperly”)

2- Kym/Alli

3- Shelley/Nici 

4- Tim/Te Jay

5- Misti/Jim

6- Brooke/Robbie

7- Amy/Maya 

8- Keith/Whitney

Teams are now instructed to travel to Le Grand Balcon du Café Glacier.  Teams arrive in the following order:

1- Kym/Alli  

2- Adam/Bethany

3- Shelley/Nici 

4- Tim/Te Jay

5- Brooke/Robbie

6- Misti/Jim

7- Amy/Maya 

8- Keith/Whitney

When they arrive, teams find the U-Turn. 

CAUTION: DOUBLE U-TURN AHEAD

This is a Double U-Turn. Teams may choose to U-turn any team they wish (well, the team has to be behind them), but they may only use the U-Turn once during the race. If a team is U-turned, they must go back to the Detour choices and complete the Detour that they did not complete. This U-Turn is doubled, meaning two teams may U-Turn two other teams.  Phil, during his explanation, does not say how many U-Turns there will be on this race.

1- Kym/Alli choose not to U-Turn

2- Adam/Bethany choose not to U-Turn

3- Shelley/Nici choose to U-Turn Keith/Whitney – (Toyouke: “Luckily the two teams you dislike are both fairly strong and worth trying to screw over.”)

4- Tim/Te Jay choose not to U-Turn

5- Brooke/Robbie choose not to U-Turn

6- Misti/Jim choose not to U-Turn

7- Amy/Maya choose not to U-Turn

8- Keith/Whitney have been U-Turned

(Toyouke: “Interesting. Everyone wants to save it since someone is already U-Turned. I bet if the board was blank someone would have used it on the dentists. Keith and Whitney couldn't finish in enough time to U-Turn someone else and hope they can beat them.”)  So now Keith and Whitney return to Twirl Time and start spinning their heads for two more hours.  Once that is done, teams get the U-Turn clue in the following order:

1- Kym/Alli  

2- Adam/Bethany

3- Shelley/Nici 

4- Tim/Te Jay

5- Brooke/Robbie

6- Misti/Jim

7- Amy/Maya 

8- Keith/Whitney

Once they U-Turn (or are U-Turned) teams are now instructed to travel on foot to Al Matjar Carpet Shop, the PIT STOP of the fifth leg of this racearoundtheworld.  The last team to arrive WILL be eliminated!

1- Kym/Alli – who win $5000 each.

2- Adam/Bethany  

3- Tim/Te Jay

4- Shelley/Nici – who had to pay their cab.  (Toyouke: “I'm noticing a lot of "on foot" and didn't Shelley and Nici brag about how they're paying their cab hourly?”)

5- Brooke/Robbie

6- Misti/Jim

7- Amy/Maya  

8- Keith/Whitney 

And Keith and Whitney are the last team to arrive, and are eliminated.  The tribe has spoken.
