TAR 37, Recap Leg 4, 3/26/25

Welcome to Leg 4! Last time, on Shrines and Temples and Paper, Oh My!, 11 teams raced through Japan from Osaka to Kyoto. Ana scores the Express Pass for her team, which needs to be used by Leg 5. Han and Holden stage a comeback, while teams struggle on a hard Detour task. Ultimately, Scott and Lori finish first and the dating nurses Courtney and Jasmin continue to have taxi issues and are eliminated from the race. Who will be eliminated. . . next? (click for more)

Konkai Komyo-ji Temple, Kyoto, Japan

1:45 AM Scott/Lori (1st) – (Toyouke: “Scott and Lori are genre savvy or at least have watched this show. Their point of "if you hit someone heavy (with the Driver's Seat, or a U-turn or whatever), they have to go out that leg" is exactly right. Otherwise you've wasted that advantage.”)

Clue: Fly to Denpasar, Bali, Indonesia! Make your way by taxi to Osaka and find GS Travel to book your tickets. Once in Bali, travel to Payangan and find Pura Puseh Bali Aga Bayad to get your next clue.

1:48 AM Carson/Jack (2nd)

2:09 AM Jonathan/Ana (3rd) – who inform us they have the Express Pass. (Toyouke: “So you can use the Express Pass on a Detour or Roadblock, but can you use it on a Route Info task?”)

2:35 AM Melinda/Erika (4th)

2:36 AM Brett/Mark (5th)

2:40 AM Pops/Jeff (6th)

3:03 AM Alyssa/Josiah (7th)

4:36 AM Nick/Mike (8th)

4:56 AM Han/Holden (9th)

5:38 AM Bernie/Carrigain (10th)

So teams make their way by taxi to GS Travel in Osaka. (Toyouke: “I guess there's only one all-night travel agent.”) Teams arrive in the following order:

1- Scott/Lori

2- Carson/Jack

3- Jonathan/Ana

4- Melinda/Erika

5- Brett/Mark

6- Pops/Jeff

7- Alyssa/Josiah

8- Nick/Mike

9- Han/Holden

10- Bernie/Carrigain

Teams now book their flights to Denpasar. All the teams except Bernie and Carrigan get there early enough to snag the first flight. They get on the following flights:

Flight #1, departs 7:15 AM, arrives 4:40 PM

1) Scott/Lori

2) Carson/Jack

3) Jonathan/Ana

4) Melinda/Erika

5) Brett/Mark

6) Pops/Jeff

7) Alyssa/Josiah

8) Nick/Mike

9) Han/Holden

Flight #2, departs 10:55 AM, arrives 8:50 PM

1) Bernie/Carrigain – who are actually told that they were too late to the travel agency to board the flight in time, so they may have been able to be on it if they were faster. (Toyouke: “Oof. One team leaving nearly four hours after all other teams? I wonder if there's going to be bunching.”)

Teams arrive at Kansai International Airport for their flights in the following order:

1- Scott/Lori

2- Carson/Jack

3- Jonathan/Ana

4- Melinda/Erika

5- Brett/Mark

6- Pops/Jeff

7- Alyssa/Josiah

8- Nick/Mike

9- Han/Holden

10- Bernie/Carrigain

The Amazing Yellow Line now takes us from Osaka to Denpasar, where teams arrive in the following order:

1- Scott/Lori

2- Melinda/Erika

3- Jonathan/Ana

4- Brett/Mark

5- Nick/Mike

6- Han/Holden

7- Alyssa/Josiah

8- Pops/Jeff

9- Carson/Jack

10- Bernie/Carrigain

Teams get taxis and make their way to Pura Puseh Bali Aga Bayad in Payangan. They arrive and find the clue box in the following order:

1- Jonathan/Ana

2- Nick/Mike

3- Scott/Lori

4- Han/Holden

5- Alyssa/Josiah

6- Pops/Jeff

7- Brett/Mark

8- Melinda/Erika

9- Carson/Jack

10- Bernie/Carrigain

Teams pull numbers and are greeted with a sign that states “the clue will arrive with the rising sun.” So, bunching. (Toyouke: “HA! Bunching! OK at least there are times. Did they say what the separation time was?” Kmanpat: “No, I’m guessing enough time for the ATV’s to be spaced out.”) The sun comes up and an ATV arrives with their clues. When teams rip and read, they find out that they are going to travel by ATV on a course through mud and a tunnel to a waterfall to get their next clue. Once they return to the starting line, they can read their clue and proceed to their next destination. Teams go on their ATV tour in the following order:

1- Jonathan/Ana

2- Nick/Mike

3- Scott/Lori

4- Han/Holden

5- Alyssa/Josiah

6- Pops/Jeff

7- Brett/Mark

8- Melinda/Erika

9- Carson/Jack – (Toyouke: “YOU'RE NOT ON A DRAGON. Mario Kart is much more accurate.”)

10- Bernie/Carrigain

Teams get their clues and return to the ATV parking area. Teams are now instructed to take their taxis to the Gabah Ayu Rice Fields in Tampaksiring. Heads Up: Driver’s Seat Ahead! (Toyouke: “So this was just anti-bunching to make sure someone was clearly in first?”) Teams get taxis and make their way to Tampaksiring in the following order:

1- Jonathan/Ana

2- Nick/Mike

3- Scott/Lori

4- Han/Holden

5- Alyssa/Josiah

6- Pops/Jeff

7- Brett/Mark -whose taxi drives 45 minutes in the wrong direction.

8- Melinda/Erika

9- Carson/Jack

10- Bernie/Carrigain

Teams arrive and get their clues in the following order:

1- Jonathan/Ana

2- Scott/Lori

3- Nick/Mike

4- Alyssa/Josiah

5- Han/Holden

6- Carson/Jack

7- Pops/Jeff

8- Melinda/Erika

9- Bernie/Carrigain

10- Brett/Mark

Teams open their clues and come to the fourth roadblock.

ROADBLOCK:
Who’s ready to rice to the occasion?

In this roadblock, one team member must thresh a certain number of pounds of rice, separate the kernels, and get it weighed by a worker. Once teams have the correct number of pounds, teams will get their next clue.

Teams race down the marked path to the task and run into the Driver’s Seat.

DRIVER’S SEAT:

The Driver’s Seat allows the first team to arrive to assign certain tasks to certain teams. In this Driver’s Seat, the lead team can assign 15 pounds, 20 pounds, or 25 pounds of rice to each team.

(Toyouke: “I still think my idea about the Driver's Seat is better.”) Since Jonathan and Ana were the first team, they make the decisions.

15 POUNDS

1) Jonathan/Ana

2) Melinda/Erika

20 POUNDS

1) Han/Holden

2) Carson/Jack

3) Brett/Mark

25 POUNDS

1) Scott/Lori

2) Nick/Mike

3) Alyssa/Josiah

4) Pops/Jeff

5) Bernie/Carrigain

(Toyouke: “So...your strategy is to give second, third, and fourth place the most weight? Just to dump them into the mix with the slower teams? Scott is right, though, I don't think they'll struggle so much they'll be eliminated. Or you could give 25 pounds to Bernie and Carrigain and probably knock them out.  I mean obviously give yourselves the least weight. I think everyone would agree on that. But why would you try to save Bernie and Carrigain? They're stuck in last, with a set time difference between them and everyone else that I don't think they can make up, unless their cab does some speeding. Giving yourself a "cushion" before the next three teams only wins you this leg? And you KNOW there is more bunching ahead. Who cares if you feel good about it. Again, these are the rules.“) Once teams discover the weights, the following team members complete the Roadblock.

1- Ana – who promptly decides the task is too hard, and they use the Express Pass. (Toyouke: “So...there was a brief discussion about screwing Jonathan and Ana to force them to use the Express Pass, but then it wasn't worth it, and then they said "let's give ourselves a cushion", and then they...wasted the Express Pass anyway.”)
2- Lori

3- Nick

4- Alyssa

5- Jack

6- Han – whose parents were rice farmers.

7- Jeff

8- Melinda – Erika: "It might be cooking or something, you should take it mom."

9- Carrigain

10- Mark – who mentions that they are very good at challenges, but because they are in he back of the pack, no one sees them compete. (Toyouke: “Mark does have a point: this is twice now that they've been in last and saved themselves by being great at a task.”)

After much rice threshing, teams complete the Roadblock in the following order:

1- Jonathan/Ana
2- Scott/Lori –
(Toyouke: “Lori, don't get all "I thought we were friends" about it! Be mad they are dumb and aren't going to eliminate you! So you can be around to get revenge!”)
3- Nick/Mike

4- Han/Holden

5- Alyssa/Josiah

6- Carson/Jack

7- Melinda/Erika

8- Pops/Jeff

9- Brett/Mark

10- Bernie/Carrigain

Teams then open up their Roadblock clue, which tells them to travel by taxi to Penglipuran Village in Kubu. Teams arrive at the clue box in the following order:

1- Jonathan/Ana
2- Scott/Lori
3- Han/Holden

4- Nick/Mike

5- Alyssa/Josiah

6- Carson/Jack

7- Melinda/Erika

8- Brett/Mark

9- Pops/Jeff – Pops: "Right now I'm a proud dad" Jeff: "Right now, what about all the time?"

10- Bernie/Carrigain

Teams open their clues and we get the third Detour Clue.

DETOUR:

Penjor OR Pajegan

*Penjor: Teams make their way to an area in the complex to decorate a bamboo pole to match the demonstration pole. Once approved by the proctors, teams must put on sarongs and deliver the pole to an address and mount the pole in order to get their next clue.

*Pajegan: Teams make their way to an area in the complex to create an offering of fruit and flowers. They must memorize the contents, purchase the items at stores nearby, and then recreate the offering. Once correct, teams must carry the offering the traditional way (on their heads) to an altar to get their next clue.

1- Jonathan/Ana choose Penjor – and Jonathan tells us multiple times he needs to use a bathroom. (Toyouke: “OH MY GOD JUST GO PEE JFC.”)

2- Scott/Lori choose Penjor – (Toyouke: “This moralizing about "this is how I teach my kids I'm mad" is stupid but on the other hand, I wouldn't talk to them either.”)

3- Han/Holden choose Pajegan

4- Nick/Mike choose Pajegan

5- Carson/Jack choose Penjor

6- Alyssa/Josiah choose Penjor – Alyssa: “There’s no way to know where you’re going!” And then the Gongs of Discontent sounds as The Amazing Cameramen get a beautiful shot of the sign to show us that indeed, there is a way to know where you’re going.

7- Melinda/Erika choose Penjor

8- Brett/Mark choose Penjor

9- Pops/Jeff choose Penjor

10- Bernie/Carrigain choose Penjor – who ask around about the Detour but also miss the obvious sign pointing them in the right direction. (Toyouke: “If you guys can't read a basic map that is there for tourists, this is not the show for you.”)

Much penjor and pajegan decorating ensues. So, teams complete the detour in the following order:

1- Jonathan/Ana
2- Scott/Lori

3- Carson/Jack

4- Han/Holden

5- Nick/Mike – after dropping the pajegan from their head and having to reassemble it before getting the clue.

6- Alyssa/Josiah

7- Brett/Mark

8- Melinda/Erika

9- Pops/Jeff

10- Bernie/Carrigain

Teams are now instructed to make their way to Pura Delam Pelapuram, the PIT STOP of the fourth leg of this racearoundtheworld. The last team to arrive WILL be eliminated!

1- Jonathan/Ana – who win 1 Key Cash Rewards for a trip for 2 to Croatia and Montenegro.

2- Carson/Jack

3- Scott/Lori

4- Melinda/Erika – who looked at a phone and went forward instead of turning left and running around the entire complex, like ALL THE OTHER TEAMS. (Toyouke: “See, you all trusted each other and it backfired. The only good thing is you're all lost together.”)

5- Alyssa/Josiah

6- Han/Holden

7- Brett/Mark

8- Nick/Mike

9- Pops/Jeff

10- Bernie/Carrigain

And Bernie and Carrigain are eliminated. Bernie says she couldn’t be here without Carrigain. At least they still like each other.

ORDER NOW:

1st – Jonathan/Ana

2nd – Carson/Jack

3rd – Scott/Lori

4th – Melinda/Erika

5th – Alyssa/Josiah

6th – Han/Holden

7th – Brett/Mark

8th – Nick/Mike

9th – Pops/Jeff
