TAR 37, Recap Leg 2, 3/12/25

Welcome to Leg 2! Last time, on Fourteen Teams Is Really Pushing the Envelope, 14 teams started Amazing Race 37 and raced from LA to Hong Kong, China. Racers encountered a new element in the Fork in the Road, which is essentially a Detour with two different endings. Gaymers Carson and Jack finished first in the lion dance option, and it was a three way race for the end of that leg, where retired firefighters Mark and Larry were eliminated. Newlyweds Alyssa and Josiah finished first in the Chinese Opera option, and it was stairs at the beginning of the leg that slowed sisters Jackye and Lauren down, eventually leading to their elimination. Who will be eliminated. . . next? (click for more)

Art Park Terrace, West Kowloon Cultural District, Hong Kong, China

4:40 PM Carson/Jack (1st) – who confirm that they’ve been friends since they were kids and were the first person that they each came out to. (Toyouke: “Why do the streamers only have one backpack?”)

Clue: Fly to Osaka, Japan! Once there, you will take part in an Expedia inspired adventure. Take a taxi to Skywards Travel on the thirteenth floor of the Crocodile Center to book your flights. When you arrive in Osaka, make your way to Tsutenkaku Tower to get your next clue.

4:56 PM Brett/Mark (2nd) – Mark states he is the serious one and Brett tries to get him to lighten up.

5:06 PM Ernest/Bridget (3rd) – and we finally learn about Ernest, and that he was a Chicago cop for 32 years. And Bridget reveals that he taught her how to rap. (Toyouke: “That rap was cute.”)

5:10 PM Bernie/Carrigain (4th) – they have been friends for seven years.

5:18 PM Alyssa/Josiah (5th)

5:19 PM Nick/Mike (6th)

5:20 PM Courtney/Jasmin (7th)

5:38 PM Jonathan/Ana (8th) – who reveal that this leg of the Race is happening on their seventh wedding anniversary.

5:59 PM Scott/Lori (9th) – who met as they were preparing for their LDS missions. (Toyouke: “They went on a mission!? I knew it.”)

6:00 PM Pops/Jeff (10th)

6:06 PM Han/Holden (11th)

6:08 PM Melinda/Erika (12th)

So teams make their way by taxi to Skywards Travel at the Crocodile Center. Or try to. Teams arrive in the following order:

1- Carson/Jack

2- Brett/Mark

3- Ernest/Bridget

4- Alyssa/Josiah

5- Jonathan/Ana

6- Courtney/Jasmin

7- Nick/Mike - who went to the wrong Skywards Travel first.

8- Han/Holden

9- Pops/Jeff

10- Bernie/Carrigain - who went to the wrong Skywards Travel first.

11- Scott/Lori

12- Melinda/Erika

Teams now book their flights for Osaka. They get on the following flights:

Flight #1, Cathay Pacific, layover in Taiwan, arrives 6:05 AM

1) Carson/Jack – (Toyouke: “30 minutes is huge I guess, but you're first and I'm not sure risking a connection is worth it. But it's not dumb, certainly.”)

2) Brett/Mark

3) Ernest/Bridget

Flight #2, Cathay Pacific, direct flight, arrives 6:35 AM

1) Alyssa/Josiah – who actually chose not to risk the connection, which caused the rest of the teams on this flight to follow them.

2) Jonathan/Ana

3) Courtney/Jasmin

4) Nick/Mike

5) Han/Holden

Flight #3, Cathay Pacific, direct flight, arrives 7:55 AM

1) Pops/Jeff – who tried for the 6:35 arrival, but it was full when they tried to book.

2) Bernie/Carrigain

3) Scott/Lori

4) Melinda/Erika

So, teams take taxis to Hong Kong International Airport and arrive in the following order:

1- Carson/Jack

2- Brett/Mark

3- Ernest/Bridget

4- Alyssa/Josiah

5- Jonathan/Ana

6- Courtney/Jasmin

7- Nick/Mike

8- Han/Holden

9- Pops/Jeff

10- Bernie/Carrigain

11- Scott/Lori

12- Melinda/Erika

The first two teams check in for their flights. The teams on the third flight decide to try and work their magic to get on the third flight. Bernie and Carrigain and Scott and Lori bail early and settle for the third flight, but Erika and Jeff seem to work some sort of magic and manage to get their teams on the earlier flight. So the flights end up like this:

Flight #1, Cathay Pacific, layover in Taiwan, arrives 6:05 AM

1) Carson/Jack

2) Brett/Mark

3) Ernest/Bridget

Flight #2, Cathay Pacific, direct flight, arrives 6:35 AM

1) Alyssa/Josiah – who actually chose not to risk the connection, which caused the rest of the teams on this flight to follow them.

2) Jonathan/Ana

3) Courtney/Jasmin

4) Nick/Mike

5) Han/Holden

6) Pops/Jeff

7) Melinda/Erika

Flight #3, Cathay Pacific, direct flight, arrives 7:55 AM

1) Bernie/Carrigain – (Toyouke: “These girls are already melting down. When half of your team has decided their opinion doesn't matter and they're sniping about it, it's a bad sign. I have no idea how they got on that flight. OK also I can't even figure out what this fight is about. Is Bernie letting Carrigain lead because she doesn't want responsibility? Because she doesn't listen? And then Carrigain's response is "why am I in charge when apparently I can't do anything right?" See, Bernie said Carrigain is going to keep her from a meltdown and I knew that would cause a fight. How is Carrigain taking the lead going to keep everyone from fighting if she doesn't want to lead?”)

2) Scott/Lori

The Amazing Yellow Line now takes us from Hong Kong to Osaka, where teams arrive in the following order:

1- Brett/Mark

2- Carson/Jack

3- Ernest/Bridget

4- Nick/Mike

5- Han/Holden

6- Jonathan/Ana

7- Alyssa/Josiah

8- Courtney/Jasmin

9- Melinda/Erika

10- Pops/Jeff

11- Scott/Lori

12- Bernie/Carrigain

Teams get taxis and make their way to Tsutenkaku Tower. They arrive and find the clue box in the following order:

1- Ernest/Bridget

2- Brett/Mark

3- Carson/Jack

4- Jonathan/Ana

5- Alyssa/Josiah

6- Han/Holden – who let their taxi go instead of making them wait. Bad move. (Toyouke: “Immediate 0-60 sibling fight.”)

7- Nick/Mike

8- Courtney/Jasmin

9- Melinda/Erika

10- Pops/Jeff

11- Bernie/Carrigain

12- Scott/Lori

Teams are now instructed to take a taxi to Namba Hatch. Watch out: Intersection Ahead! Teams arrive at Namba Hatch in the following order:

1- Ernest/Bridget

2- Brett/Mark

3- Carson/Jack

4- Jonathan/Ana

5- Alyssa/Josiah

6- Nick/Mike

7- Courtney/Jasmin

8- Pops/Jeff

9- Melinda/Erika

10- Han/Holden

11- Bernie/Carrigain

12- Scott/Lori

Now, all sorts of things happen. First, teams arrive at an Intersection. An Intersection is a route marker where teams must join forces with another team of their choice, regardless of arrival order, and must complete any tasks with them until told to split up. We last experienced this in TAR 16. (Toyouke: “I noticed Phil said both teams had to agree to work together, I guess in case a bunch of people showed up to the clue box together. It didn't matter but I kind of wish it did for entertainment purposes.”)

Teams join forces in the following order:

1- Ernest/Bridget & Brett/Mark – because the three teams on the first flight made a decision in advance that the first two to arrive would automatically team up.
2- Carson/Jack & Jonathan/Ana

3- Alyssa/Josiah & Nick/Mike but they are totally confused as to what happened to Han and Holden.

4- Courtney/Jasmin & Pops/Jeff

5- Melinda/Erika & Han/Holden

6- Bernie/Carrigain & Scott/Lori

(Toyouke: “See, I like the Intersection better than the Head-to-Head, even though on the surface it does the same thing: force teams to wait until someone else shows up. Maybe because the Intersection never ended at the Pit Stop.”) Now that we’re all paired up, teams come to the second roadblock.

ROADBLOCK:
Who’s ready to beat the competition?

In this roadblock, one team member from each of the joined teams must learn and perform a percussion routine on the taiko drums. Once the Roadblock is completed, teams are no longer intersected and may resume racing separately.

The following team members complete the Roadblock.

1- Ernest & Mark – and Ernest struggles mightily. They finally get it on their seventeenth attempt.
2- Jonathan & Jack

3- Alyssa & Mike

4- Courtney & Jeff

5- Erika & Holden

6- Bernie & Scott

(Toyouke: “I kind of don't like that everyone has to sit through a performance before they can even start practicing.”) After much drumming, Roadblockers complete the Roadblock in the following order:

1- Jonathan & Jack
2- Alyssa & Mike

3- Bernie & Scott
– (Toyouke: “This fake-ass conference to decide if they're done is so dumb but it IS impressive they only took one attempt.”)

4- Courtney & Jeff

5- Erika & Holden

6- Ernest & Mark – (Toyouke: “I am surprised they had to do at least two attempts after everyone else left. I feel like usually they let a garbage attempt go through once everyone is gone.”)

Teams then open up their Roadblock clue, which tells them to resume racing separately. They read their clues in the following order:

1- Carson/Jack

2- Jonathan/Ana

3- Alyssa/Josiah

4- Nick/Mike

5- Bernie/Carrigain

6- Scott/Lori

7- Pops/Jeff

8- Courtney/Jasmin

9- Melinda/Erika

10- Han/Holden

11- Ernest/Bridget

12- Brett/Mark

Teams are now instructed to make their way on foot to Dotonbori Bridge to get their next clue. Teams arrive in the following order:

1- Carson/Jack

2- Jonathan/Ana

3- Nick/Mike

4- Alyssa/Josiah

5- Scott/Lori

6- Bernie/Carrigain

7- Courtney/Jasmin

8- Pops/Jeff

9- Han/Holden

10- Melinda/Erika

11- Brett/Mark

12- Ernest/Bridget

Teams open their clues and we get the first Detour Clue.

DETOUR:

Mochi OR Mawashi

*Mochi: Teams make their way by taxi to Ohama Daishin Arena. Once there, teams must pound steamed rice into mochi dough and forn 12 mochi cakes. Once approved, teams get their next clue.

*Mawashi: Teams make their way by taxi to Ohama Daishin Arena. Once they find the sumo ring, teams get changed and have to properly fold a mawashi on their partner. Once approved, teams push a sumo wrestler out of the ring ot get their next clue.

(Toyouke: “This Detour is fun, although I am kind of surprised they let foreigners near a real sumo ring? It probably is faster though, considering I don't think anyone uses an actual wooden hammer anymore.”)

1- Jonathan/Ana choose Mawashi

2- Carson/Jack choose Mawashi

3- Alyssa/Josiah choose Mawashi

4- Nick/Mike choose Mawashi

5- Scott/Lori choose Mawashi

6- Bernie/Carrigain choose Mawashi

7- Han/Holden choose Color Mawashi

8- Courtney/Jasmin choose Mochi

9- Pops/Jeff choose Mochi – (Toyouke: “If anyone should do Mochi, it's two lumberjacks.”)

10- Melinda/Erika choose Mochi – only after arriving at the Detour, realizing the teams they were with were also doing Mochi and though, “Well, since we’re here. . .”

11- Brett/Mark choose Mawashi

12- Ernest/Bridget choose Mawashi

Much mochi making and mawashi folding ensues. So, teams complete the detour in the following order:

1- Jonathan/Ana

2- Scott/Lori

3- Alyssa/Josiah

4- Carson/Jack

5- Courtney/Jasmin

6- Melinda/Erika

7- Pops/Jeff

8- Bernie/Carrigain

9- Nick/Mike

10- Brett/Mark

11- Han/Holden

12- Ernest/Bridget

Teams are now instructed to make their way to Katsuo-ji Templer and find the Tahoto Pagoda, the PIT STOP of the second leg of this racearoundtheworld. The last team to arrive WILL be eliminated!

1- Jonathan/Ana – who win Expedia One Key Cash for a trip for two to Kilimanjaro, Tanzania, including a ten day hike.

2- Scott/Lori

3- Alyssa/Josiah – Josiah: “This is the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do while having fun!”

4- Carson/Jack

5- Melinda/Erika

6- Courtney/Jasmin

7- Pops/Jeff

8- Bernie/Carrigain

9- Brett/Mark – (Toyouke: "Gays know how to drape" lol)

10- Nick/Mike

11- Han/Holden

12- Ernest/Bridget

And Ernest and Bridget are eliminated. Ernest says he learned a lot about his daughter, and Bridget was happy she had time to really have conversations with her dad. I wish we got more time with them.

ORDER NOW:

1st – Jonathan/Ana

2nd – Scott/Lori

3rd – Alyssa/Josiah

4th – Carson/Jack

5th – Melinda/Erika

6th – Courtney/Jasmin

7th – Pops/Jeff

8th – Bernie/Carrigain

9th – Brett/Mark

10th – Nick/Mike

11th – Han/Holden
