Welcome to Leg 1 of The Amazing Race 38! We are informed by Phil himself while hanging out in various European cities that the concept for The Amazing Race came from travelers backpacking across Europe, so that’s the inspiration for the season, while visiting some iconic European destinations. (Toyouke: “Only Europe? Weak.”) Phil promises more trains, more self driving (Toyouke: “Well at least more self driving.”), and more racing on foot. Phil promises some classic Amazing Race events. (Toyouke: “"Two Express Passes" is not a "classic". Falling in manure is a "classic".”) Rather than settle for the classic starting line (Toyouke: “I don't like that we didn't get Phil at the starting line.”), teams exit a train station in Hoorn, Netherlands with their first clue in hand. So the thirteen teams for The Amazing Race 38 are:
Tucker and Eric, Team Oh Brother, are brothers. Tucker was on Big Brother 26. They say they are big competitors.
Angela and Lexi, Team Mother-Daughter Dance, are a mother and daughter team. Angela says that the apple doesn’t fall from the tree. We’ll see.
Jas and Jag, Team Turbanators, are brothers and entrepreneurs. Jag won Big Brother 25. He also has a degree with three majors. His brother has the street smarts.
Jack and Chelsie, Team Father-Daughter Dance, are a father and daughter duo. Chelsie won Big Brother 26. She is strategic and physical, and really wants to win.
Natalie and Stephanie, Team Sister Sister, are sisters from a single parent household. Natalie was on Big Brother 18.
Joseph and Adam, Team Law Bros, are brothers. Joseph was on Big Brother 24, and Taylor is his ex-girlfriend.
Kristine and Rubina, Team California Oranges, are sisters. Rubina was on season 26, and Tucker is her current boyfriend. (Toyouke: “Oh are you telling me you and your boyfriend never discussed how you were both cast this season? I am already irritated.”)
Jack and Enzo, Team Jersey Brothers, are brothers and best friends. Enzo was on both Big Brother 12 and Big Brother 22.
Kyland and Taylor, Team Influencer, met through Big Brother, even though he was on season 23 and she won Big Brother 24. They are dating, and they are going on TAR to see if their relationship will work. Never a good sign.
Izzy and Paige, Team EnGayged, are a couple that became fiancées 48 hours after Izzy exited the Big Brother house in Season 25. Izzy is not intimidated by Jag.
Megan and Matt, Team Newlywed, are officially the Turners after getting married last year.
Kat and Alex, Team Dating Games, are girlfriend and boyfriend, but they have known each other for eight years. They used to hate each other.
Hannah and Simone, Team Grad Student Girls, are sisters. Hannah was on Big Brother 23 with Kyland and they have a good relationship.
Hoorn Railway Station, Hoorn, Netherlands
Clue: Take a provided taxi to IJsbaan de Westfries in Hoorn to get your next clue.
So, teams get their clues, find their taxis and depart the Hoorn Railway Station. They arrive at IJsbaan de Westfries in the following order:

13- Angela/Lexi – who miss the clue sitting in front of the arena.
Teams are now instructed to take part in ice bowling. (Toyouke: “There's no way this is a real sport but humiliating contestants with dumb fake sports is a "classic" so I'm not that mad about it.”) One person gets on a sled and the other pushes them along the ice to try and get a strike on a set of bowling pins. The first team to get a strike will get the Express Pass, while the last team to get a strike will face a Hazard somewhere on the leg. Teams get their strikes in the following order:

Teams are now instructed to take their taxi to Roode Steen and find Grote Kerk, where Phil will be waiting. Teams arrive at the Grote Kerk in the following order:

Phil assembles the teams and reminds them about the new season. There will be 13 teams this season! And all the teams have a Big Brother connection, so Phil has them introduce themselves. (Toyouke: “It sounds like all of these people have carefully rehearsed their introductions. I am sure everyone does it. But these people sound more rehearsed than usual.”) He then tells Kyland and Taylor that they didn’t win just one Express Pass, they win TWO! So they have to decide who gets it. They give it to Jas and Jag. (Toyouke: “Mmm, "We already are their friends so they don't need the Express Pass" is the way you want to think about it? Not "Our friends will be offended we didn't help them out and now we've ruined that relationship"?”) He then reminds Jack and Enzo about the Hazard later in the leg. Oh, and the first team to finish will win ONE MILLION DOLLARS (US$1000000)! Phil lets teams know that their next clue is on the cars they will be driving around the corner from where they are. Then oh so sexy Phil does his standard patter: “Ready? The world is waiting for you. Good luck, travel safe. Cue Phil's eyebrow pop. (Kmanpat: “I’ve missed the eyebrow pop.“) GO!” Who will be eliminated . . . tonight?
Clue: Drive yourselves to the Port of Volendam to get your next clue.
Teams drive themselves to the Port of Volendam. They arrive at the clue box in the following order:

13- Megan/Matt – who can’t navigate, park somewhere in Volendam, and then walk all they way down to the port.
When Jack and Enzo arrive, they find their Hazard.
HAZARD:
A
hazard is a task that must be performed by the last place team on any
specific task. Once they complete this task, they may return to the
place where the hazard occurred and continue the leg. In this Hazard,
both team members must eat a soused herring, and then use a clog
bicycle to get to their next task. Once completed, they will receive
their next clue.
Teams
complete the Hazard in the following order:

After they finish their herrings, they can board their bicycle and catch up with the other teams. (Toyouke: “Not just the herring but a dumb bike? Reluctantly, good job.”)
Teams are instructed to choose a tandem bicycle and ride to Edam, where they will find the Edam Cheese Market and their next clue. Teams arrive at the Edam Cheese Market in the following order:

Teams arrive Edam Cheese Market and are instructed to dress as traditional Dutch cheesemongers and take a wooden carrier to a nearby canal. Once there, they will catch 30 balls of cheese thrown at them two at a time, stack them in a pyramid on the carrier, and take the cheese to the nearby market where the Big Cheese will approve their work and give them their next clue. (Toyouke: “Why is everything a Route Info? I need a Detour.”) Teams complete the task in the following order:

Teams are now instructed to return their entire costumes, ride their tandem bike back to Volendam, and then use their cars to drive themselves to the town of Mijdrecht and find Van der Wilt Gerbera’s to get their next clue. Teams drop off their bikes in the following order:

3- Jack/Chelsie
4- Izzy/Paige
5- Kat/Alex – and Kat discovers she still has her bandana on, so they are going to drive to Edam and drop it off. (Toyouke: “Listen, crying is kind of extreme, but he's being supportive and that's something compared to what we see on this show a lot.”)

When they rip open the clue, teams get the first roadblock.
ROADBLOCK:
Who’s feeling fresh as a daisy?
In this roadblock, one team member enters the greenhouse in order to find nine specific flowers for a flower arrangement. Once the roadblocker has all nine, the Bloom Boss will approve them and give them their next clue.
(Toyouke: “Some of these people are going to be picking flowers all day. They do not have the intelligence for these details.”) The following teammates take the Roadblock:

Teams are now instructed to travel to the PIT STOP at the Museumplein in Amsterdam. This is the first pit stop in a racearoundtheworld. The last team to arrive at the pit stop WILL be eliminated!
