TAR 28 Recap Leg 9, 4-22-16

Welcome to Leg 9! Last time, on Ooo, Girl, Sand!, 6 teams made their way to Dubai. Sheri immediately got lost when she had to drive herself. Everyone else managed to deal with camels in various ways, but not faster than Brodie and Kurt, who managed to get to the Roadblock first, stumping Brodie and causing the use of the Express Pass. (It is important to note that Brodie has done exactly three roadblocks: find an emerald in mud, hang glide in the snow, and this one, which he Express Passed. When Brodie did the other two, Tyler and Korey won the leg. Just saying.) In the meantime, Sheri and Cole came in last, but were saved by the last non-elimination of the season. Clue: Fly 4600 miles to Denpasar, Bali, Indonesia! Once there, make your way to the town of Tabanan and find Tanah Lot Temple to get your next clue. You have $132 for this leg of the race.

So teams make their way to Dubai International Airport. Teams arrive in the following order:

1- Brodie/Kurt

2- Burnie/Ashley

3- Tyler/Korey

4- Zach/Rachel

5- Dana/Matt

6- Sheri/Cole

Brodie and Kurt arrive first and do the research to find a direct flight to Bali that leaves at 8:50 am and gets in at 10 pm, with plenty of seats available. So, all the teams are on the flight to Bali. Surprise. The Amazing Red Line takes teams to Denpasar where they arrive in the following order:

2- Sheri/Cole

3- Burnie/Ashley

4- Tyler/Korey

5- Zach/Rachel

6- Dana/Matt

Teams get taxis and travel to Tanah Lot. They arrive in the following order:

1- Brodie/Kurt

2- Sheri/Cole

3- Burnie/Ashley

4- Tyler/Korey

5- Zach/Rachel

6- Dana/Matt

Once they arrive, teams pull numbers to get their entrance times for the next morning.

6:15 AM

So, teams sleep overnight and enter the temple complex the next morning at the approved times. When they enter, they search for the marked offerings and get their next clues in the following order:

1- Brodie/Kurt

5- Zach/Rachel

6- Dana/Matt

Teams are now instructed to deliver two offerings to two different temples. The first offering, a pile of fruit, presented with their clue, goes to Enjung Galuh Temple, and when teams arrive, they receive their next offering, a live python, which they carry to Tanah Lot Temple to get their next clue. (Toyouke: "So much freaking out about snakes AND YET not one of these people made an Indiana Jones reference.")

Teams arrive at Enjung Galuh in the following order:

1- Brodie/Kurt – after getting turned around, find a bunch of worshippers on the beach and losing their lead.

2- Burnie/Ashley

3- Tyler/Korey

4- Sheri/Cole

5- Zach/Rachel

6- Dana/Matt

Teams pick up their snakes and return to Tanah Lot in the following order:

1- Brodie/Kurt

2- Tyler/Korey

3- Burnie/Ashley

4- Sheri/Cole

5- Dana/Matt

6- Zach/Rachel

Teams are now instructed to Klungkung and run past the Bat Temple to find the Salt Maker on Kusamba beach and get their next clue. Teams arrive at the Salt Maker in the following order:

1- Brodie/Kurt

2- Burnie/Ashley

3- Tyler/Korey

4- Sheri/Cole

5- Zach/Rachel

6- Dana/Matt

Teams open their clues, and Sheri and Cole find their Speed Bump.

SPEED BUMP:

A Speed Bump is a task that must be performed by the last place team on a non-elimination leg when the non-elimination leg is not immediately followed by the next leg. Once they complete this task, they may return to the place where the Speed Bump occurred and continue the leg. In this speed bump, the team must run back to the Bat Temple and find the marked motorcyclist who serves meals on wheels. The team must serve ten bowls of bakso for 10000 rupees each, and then each eat a bowl themselves. Once complete, teams may continue the race from where they left off.

Teams complete the Speed Bump in the following order:

1- Sheri/Cole

After much bakso making and eating (Toyouke: "And bitching about how noodles and meatballs for breakfast is the weirdest thing ever"), they continue with the rest of the teams.

Teams arrive at the camp and receive a traditional blessing and their gnomes. Tyler: “There will be lots of time to get to gno . . . me.”

And teams get the ninth roadblock clue.

ROADBLOCK:

Who’s worth their salt?

In this roadblock, one team member must collect seawater from the ocean to prepare a marked plot for salt drying. Once the plot is watered, they must scrape brine out of a hollow coconut tree. Once all the brine is scraped, they must fill and tie four bags of salt to the satisfaction of the judge. Once completed correctly, teams get their next clue.

The following teammates take the Roadblock:

1- Kurt – who lets us know that Brodie has to take at least one of the next two roadblocks, as they are in roadblock trouble. We also learn that Kurt is strong because he had cancer.
2- Burnie

4- Rachel – who immediately regrets this decision.

5- Cole

6- Matt

After watering the plot, the roadblockers end up in the following order:

1- Burnie
2- Kurt

3- Tyler

4- Cole

5- Matt

6- Rachel

After much coconut tree scraping and salt bagging, teams complete the Roadblock in the following order:

1- Burnie/Ashley

2- Tyler/Korey

3- Brodie/Kurt

4- Sheri/Cole

6- Zach/Rachel

Teams are instructed to make their way to the town of Sanur and find Mertasari Beach. Teams arrive in the following order:

1- Burnie/Ashley

2- Tyler/Korey

3- Brodie/Kurt

4- Sheri/Cole

5- Dana/Matt

6- Zach/Rachel

And teams get the . . . TENTH roadblock clue.

ROADBLOCK:

Who wants to go fly a kite?

In this roadblock, one team member must build a giant Indonesian kite. Then, using a group of kite enthusiasts, they had to get the kite airborne. Once completed correctly, teams get their next clue. The team member who did not complete the previous roadblock must complete this Roadblock.

The following teammates take the Roadblock:

1- Ashley
2- Korey– who likens the dragon head to one of Tyler’s exes. (Toyouke: "I have the feeling 'This reminds me of one of Tyler's exes' is a sentence Korey says a lot.")

3- Brodie

4- Sheri

5- Dana

6- Zach

After much kite building and flying, teams complete the Roadblock in the following order:

1- Tyler/Korey

2- Burnie/Ashley

3- Sheri/Cole

4- Dana/Matt

5- Brodie/Kurt

6- Zach/Rachel

Teams now make their way to Semawang Beach and find an outrigger canoe to take themselves to Pinisi Boat, the PIT STOP of the ninth leg of this racearoundtheworld. The last team to arrive WILL be eliminated!

1- Tyler/Korey – who win $5000 each.

2- Burnie/Ashley – who finish second for the fourth consecutive time.

3- Sheri/Cole

4- Dana/Matt

5- Brodie/Kurt – who barely finish ahead of . . .

6- Zach/Rachel

And Zach and Rachel are eliminated. So they jump off the boat.
