Welcome to Leg 8! Last time, on Driving Three Hours in the Wrong Direction Is Preferrable to Searching a Haystack, 7 teams raced from for the first time to Bulgaria and encountered self-driving for the first time in the race. The Gaymers drove themselves three hours south instead of east, bouncing them from first to worst. Jonathan and Ana parked wrong and got themselves caught in a ditch. Melinda and Erika rightly U-turned the brothers, who U-Turned the siblings, and then got stuck looking in a haystack for a bracelet while the Gaymers caught up and passed them. And Nick and Mike were eliminated at the Detour. Who will be eliminated. . . next? (click for more)

Village Square, Elin Pelin, Bulgaria
7:34 AM Alyssa/Josiah (1st) – who are collectively $400000 in debt, so the prize money would be nice.
Clue: Drive yourselves to Lake Ariana back in Sofia. Drop off your cars to get your next clue. Express Pass Available!
8:10 AM Brett/Mark (2nd)
8:33 AM Jonathan/Ana (3rd) – who are upset about there being another Express Pass opportunity. (Toyouke: “Yeah sometimes there's no bunching. It is what it is. Also you wasted the Express Pass the last time you had it, so I don't see why you need another one.”)
9:47 AM Han/Holden (4th) – who explain that they spent seven years apart due to Holden’s military service and Han’s college.
10:06 AM Melinda/Erika (5th) – Erika: “My mom is surprisingly competitive.”
11:15 AM Carson/Jack (6th) – Jack: “We’re delusional that we could pull out of last place being three hours behind the leaders.”
Teams also get information about how to claim the Express Pass.
EXPRESS PASS
To earn the Express Pass, team members drive themselves to Fabrica 126 and take part in a Bulgarian fire walking ritual. Once both team members complete the challenge, the team would be awarded with the Express Pass.
(Toyouke: “I feel like going for the Express Pass is not like going for a Fast Forward, because you still have to do all the tasks in the leg. I know the Fast Forward often gets claimed by the teams in first, but I feel like you HAVE to be in first to go for the Express Pass. Otherwise it's too risky.”) The following teams go for the Express Pass:
1- Alyssa/Josiah
Alyssa is excited and Josiah is freaking out. (Toyouke: “Love Josiah complaining as he takes his shoes off and gets ready to do it anyway.”) Josiah: ”I’m on the beach!” But they both complete it and have to drive back to Lake Ariana, and we all continue racing.
Teams drive themselves to Borisova Gradina and find Lake Ariana in the following order:
1- Brett/Mark
2- Alyssa/Josiah
3- Jonathan/Ana
4- Han/Holden
5- Melinda/Erika
6- Carson/Jack
Teams arrive at the clue box at Lake Ariana and find that they must take part in the Jordan Day Festival by searching for a cross thrown into the lake. Once they retrieve the cross, teams return it to the priest to get their clues in the following order:
1- Brett/Mark
2- Alyssa/Josiah
3- Jonathan/Ana
4- Han/Holden
5- Melinda/Erika – and Melinda explains that her husband is Greek Orthodox, so she understands the tradition.
6- Carson/Jack – Jack: “All these men were chanting, singing and dancing. We were right at home.”
Teams are now instructed to travel for the rest of the leg using any method of transport OTHER THAN TAXI to get to their destinations. Teams are also instructed to make their way to Russian Monument Square and find the marked Klek Shop at #75. Teams arrive in the following order:
1- Brett/Mark
2- Alyssa/Josiah
3- Jonathan/Ana
4- Han/Holden
5- Melinda/Erika – and Erika misreads the clue as “You MUST travel by taxi the rest of the leg”. Oops. (Toyouke: “Oh wow. Not even the usual Rattlesnakes of Discontent. Just a straight up crash.”) Melinda: “Maybe someone will make a bigger mistake than us,” she says as their taxi takes them to Monument Square.
6- Carson/Jack – who take the bus and run into the wood chopper from Leg 7. He explains to them that “klek” means kneel.
Teams eventually find the mini flag marking the hidden stall, as well as the stylish AR37 graffiti. Teams find the klek shop and get their clues in the following order:
1- Brett/Mark
2- Alyssa/Josiah
3- Jonathan/Ana
4- Han/Holden
5- Melinda/Erika – Erika: “I’ve gotten really good at reading clues carefully.” She says, as they start to look for their next taxi.
6- Carson/Jack
Teams are now instructed to make their way to the St. Kliment Ohridaki Central Library at Sofia University to get their next clue. Teams arrive and get their clue in the following order:
1- Brett/Mark
2- Alyssa/Josiah
3- Jonathan/Ana
4- Han/Holden
5- Melinda/Erika
6- Carson/Jack
Teams are now instructed to use a cypher to translate a Cyrillic text into English, and give the correct answer to the librarian for the next clue. (Toyouke: “I get that everyone is flustered and stressed, but I feel like rather than try to learn how to copy down Cyrillic, I would have...picked up the cypher circle to walk over to the book? No one has tried? I feel like once you pick it up maybe you turn it over? I don't know, it feels weird most of them aren't trying that.”) Teams complete the task in the following order:
1-
Brett/Mark
2-
Jonathan/Ana
– who discover the trick
but wait until they have given the answer to the librarian before
telling Alyssa and Josiah. (Toyouke: “For the record, I don't
think Jonathan and Ana should help anyone, but I also think Jonathan
and Ana would be the first people to complain for the rest of time if
the situation was reversed.”)
3-
Alyssa/Josiah –
who try to turn the task into an escape room.
4- Han/Holden – who start out working with Melinda and Erika, then bail to confer with Carson and Jack once they see the boys figured it out. They tell Melinda and Erika what to do after they get the answer how to do the cypher. (Toyouke: “See when you agreed to work together, and then decided you didn't want to, you can't really just abandon them with nothing. Not in a season where every leg has a twist and we haven't seen the Yield yet. You're probably going to get enough resentment for not finishing together.”)
5- Carson/Jack – who actually figure it out first of the three teams in the back of the pack, but Holden catches them looking at the reverse side of the cypher.
6- Melinda/Erika – who decide they have it and give random letters to the librarian. (Toyouke: “OK guessing random ass letters is actually hilarious.”)
Teams get their clue and are instructed to make their way to the Museum of Socialist Art and find their next clue in the sculpture garden. Teams get their clues in the following order:
1- Brett/Mark
2- Alyssa/Josiah
3- Jonathan/Ana – who got off their bus too early.
4- Carson/Jack – who separate from Han and Holden when they ask for directions.
5- Han/Holden
6- Melinda/Erika – who are disappointed in their performance at the task because they are good with the Bible. (Toyouke: “Oh the Bible verse isn't what's going to take you out”)
Teams are now instructed to make their way to the Central Military Club to get their next clue. Teams arrive and get their clues in the following order:
1- Brett/Mark
2- Alyssa/Josiah
3- Jonathan/Ana
4- Carson/Jack
5- Han/Holden
6- Melinda/Erika
Teams open their clues and come to the ninth roadblock.
ROADBLOCK:
Who
wants to step back in time?
In
this roadblock, one team member must put on a Bulgarian traditional
costume and learn a dance routine to perform with a dance troupe.
Once completed correctly, the choreographer will give them their next
clue.
The following team members complete the Roadblock.
1-
Mark – (Toyouke:
“Yes, let the dancer
learn the routine. We saw you on Drag Race last week.”)
2-
Josiah
3- Ana –
who met Jonathan at a salsa lesson. (Toyouke: “I
cannot imagine Jonathan willingly taking a dance class.”)
4- Jack
5- Holden
6- Melinda
After much Bulgarian dancing, teams complete the Roadblock in the following order:
1-
Brett/Mark
2- Alyssa/Josiah
3- Jonathan/Ana
4- Carson/Jack
5- Han/Holden
6- Melinda/Erika
Teams are now instructed to make their way on foot to St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, the PIT STOP of the eighth leg of this racearoundtheworld. The last team to arrive WILL be eliminated!
1- Brett/Mark – who win $7500 each.
2- Alyssa/Josiah
3- Jonathan/Ana
4- Carson/Jack – and Phil tries to bill them as the best TAR Comeback story. (Toyouke: “"Greatest comeback"? No, Team Who? Beating Ray and Deana? Also we already know what is coming.”)
5- Han/Holden – Holden: “I enjoyed my Bulgarian cardio.”
6- Melinda/Erika
Phil: “So I have some bad news. Read your clue.” Erika: “You must NOT take a taxi for the remainder of the leg.” Phil: “Doesn’t matter, you are the last team to arrive, and eliminated from the race.” Toyouke: “There's no way they would have survived the penalty time for all those taxis if they hadn't already been last.”)
ORDER NOW:
1st – Brett/Mark
2nd – Alyssa/Josiah
3rd – Jonathan/Ana
4th – Carson/Jack
5th – Han/Holden
Next week: Naples! Mozzarella! Pizza making! Until next time!
