Project Runway All Stars 8/3/23--"Below Decked Out" summary

Previously on “Project Runway All-Stars”: everyone had to make outfits out of denim, and then they made them compete head-to-head for no reason other than drama. And I suspect so they could declare if you lost your head-to-head battle you could be eliminated, even if you didn't do that poorly. Anyhow, Laurence made a gown and she won. Prajje was briefly criticized because Elaine was uncomfortable having to look at his model's back rolls because she's fat, which of course she tried to hide by saying it wasn't “flattering” but of course the model “has a lovely figure” or whatever. But then Rami was sent home for not being “fashion forward” and then Christian used his Save so no one went home. (click for more)

It's very sweet how everyone is excited for Rami, and no one has expressed how they're not happy there are still eight people. Rami has more confidence now, and he hasn't gotten that from the judges yet. Christian texts them to meet him at a pier.

When they arrive it's cold, and everyone has coats. Several in particular have giant oversized coats of a cut that would not be allowed on the runway for not being “flattering”. I think they're fine, I'm still irritated at Elaine because it's not like Prajje's outfit was bunching weirdly or was too tight or anything. It just had a back cutout so you could see the model's back which was not perfectly smooth because people are not shaped like that sometimes. Anyway, Christian says it's time for the “real client” challenge. Someone yells that they love that challenge. This is the episode that sent Anna home. A giant yacht pulls up and the crew gets off. It's some “Below Deck” crossover and I do not watch that show but I'd like to point out there are both men and women. The captain says they need new uniforms. Actually I don't hate that. Make new formal uniforms, but instead of models you will have the crew. You can use black and/or white but it must have epaulets (the bars on the shoulders that show rank). The captain tells them they can be trendy, but they have him do it with the cringiest “dad says slang to embarrass their teenage children” lines so I'm not repeating them. Random draw for match-ups. Two day challenge. I do notice not all of the crew are wearing the formal uniforms right now.

Rami talks to his client and confirms she has an active job so she needs to do things like move luggage and whatever. OK so this is going to be a problem immediately with this challenge. Some people got a captain or other bridge crew, and those are the people who would wear formal uniforms most often. I mean everyone is going to have to wear formal uniforms at some point, but someone like the chief engineer would only wear one on rare occasions. And yet he's busy telling Brittany that black is best because it won't show motor oil. But you wouldn't wear a formal uniform to work on the engines? All the clips of him he has a regular polo shirt? I don't know. I guess everyone's “formal uniforms” are a button down shirt with epaulets, either white or black, and black pants or a short skirt. Laurence is finding out about how it should be quick-drying and that her client only carries a radio generally. Bishme's client needs to have her phone on her. I think people are using color, so I guess that's OK? There are a couple of jumpsuits happening. Prajje is getting the bad edit. The one with the “this person is wacky” music and the chimes and side eye. You guys know what I mean. His client wants bling.

$400 at Mood. Bishme's client gets hot a lot while she works...so he buys neoprene? Anna is thrilled that her client is OK with an Asian look. Laurence is making a leather jacket which is crazy. You are on a boat. Kara Saun is merging a track suit with a tuxedo. Someone lets Bishme get on the PA system to tell everyone time is up.

Prajje talks about how he has a showroom in Philly (“Come and visit, but make an appointment, don't just show up”) and he loves to dress clients. He's not giving his client all the bling she wanted but there will be some. Brittany measures Rami I guess to figure out measurements on a man. She actually explains some things I was confused about. Apparently her client, as chief engineer, he would need to be able to work on the engines and machinery and then come up on deck and greet clients so his clothing both has to be something he can work in, but look OK enough to pass for formal. Yeah, that makes much more sense. I think she might be one of the jumpsuit people. Laurence is for sure making a jumpsuit, but also a leather/wool jacket, which I feel is not practical for at sea. I think a lot of people are making skorts also. You need shorts under a skirt if you are a deckhand or some other active role. Rami doesn't want to be on the bottom again.

Day Two. Bishme interviews that you can't overshadow your client, but you also can't let them dictate everything. You need to have a balance. Christian enters with six hours left. Rami I think doesn't have a skort, but a dress with shorts visible in the back? Like not a skirt but an apron? Christian says maybe separates. Bishme has sewn in a pocket for his client's phone. Instead of shoulder patches with stripes, he's put the stripes on the skirt. There's a slit, which Christian says might be too revealing, but then Bishme says she wants it because she said that's how she gets her tips. Heh. I mean she did say that. Prajje has a pattern and also gold stripes and it's a lot. Christian thinks maybe it'll pay off. Anna has made a kimono jumpsuit. She's very excited, even though Christian is worried.

Bishme and Prajje goof off with the radio. Who let Bishme have a radio. The clients come in for what I'm assuming will be chaos. Korto has a neon yellow, but Christian is asking pointed questions about the length of the shorts. Laurence's jacket is hot but it's still a leather jacket. Brittany's look fits weirdly, and she reminds us how she went home on the menswear challenge her season for poor fit and then got the Save. Rami has put actual pockets in the skirt. No one is super upset about their garment, no drama or fights. The clients leave, but with a promise they're all going to drink together in three hours when the day is over. Prajje notes how nice this was, unlike his season with Real Housewives, where one of them made a designer cry. Bishme is making a jacket last minute. With a big anchor on the back.

We all go to a bar to meet the clients, where I don't see a single other customer. Everyone does shots and drinks. One of the guys chats up Anna? That's what it looks like anyway. Anna says this competition is stressful and she's going to a bar for shots. The Below Deck people do an impromptu runway thing. Anna seems drunk. But she's not flirting, she doesn't need to flirt. I mean that's true, she didn't do anything to encourage that.

Runway Day. Anna brags that she's not hungover. They only have two hours today. As the clients show up, they try to edit it like Gary, the boy flirting with Anna last night, is hovering around her workstation like a creeper. I don't think anything happened, and certainly Gary started it, but Anna in confessional is very blithe about it in a way that would make her look like a jerk if anything did happen, if that makes sense? Brittany is quietly freaking out. She's hand-sewing snaps, and Bishme is helping.

Nina is actually back. She is very glad to see Rami which means she should be here always. Especially for people that never met Elaine or Brandon. I did see someone float the idea that All-Stars should have continued to have completely different judges and hosts and I don't hate that. Guest judge is Kate Chastain, who used to be on the show. Brittany thinks this is good for her. And also Luann from last season's client challenge. Elaine calls her the winner, but Shantall would have been the winner right? Come on Elaine.

Bishme: a white collared shirt and a short black straight skirt. The skirt is well above the knee, and has a triangular cutout over one thigh. On the opposite side of the skirt are the stripes for the epaulets. The shirt is short sleeved, with blank epaulets on the shoulders. I think it might have a zipper? Then a black jacket, about the same length as the skirt, with a big anchor sewn to the back in white, and the epaulets on the shoulders. When she turns around there's something weird happening on the back of the shirt, like there's a sheer patch or something, but I can't get a good look at it. Laurence: it's a black jumpsuit and a black leather jacket with white details. There are white stripes down the sides and across the shoulders of the jacket, and along the bottom it's striped and elastic like a baseball jacket. Once he takes the jacket off, it's a short-sleeved jumpsuit with the epaulets and a clip at the waist for his radio. Is there a white zipper up the back of the top part, even though there are also buttons up the front? It's not an exciting jumpsuit but I guess it fits OK.

Korto: a black sleeveless top and black shorts. They're pretty short. There are some neon yellow details, like outlining a pouch at her waist and some stripes at one side of her chest, and the epaulets match. There seems to be a vest over this? It looks like a vest that is loose, and in the back it's overlapping panels. You know how a tulip skirt has curved panels that overlap to make a triangle opening? Like that, but in the back of this vest piece. I've never seen a top cut like this except on plus-sized tops and this woman is not plus-sized. Maybe it is one piece since she never takes it off? Kara Saun: a black double breasted jacket and pants, in what is probably a tuxedo cut. The jacket has thin gold stripes down the sleeves and at the cuffs, and the front of the jacket also has gold hems. There is also a shawl collar. I believe Kara Saun said something about a utility belt, but I can't really see it. He never takes off the jacket so I don't know if she made him a shirt or not. It doesn't look anything like a uniform. As he turns around, it looks like the bottom of the jacket is also that striped baseball jacket elastic hem like Laurence's. There is black fabric at his neck but because he never takes off the jacket, it could be a dickey for all e know.

Rami: a short black ruffled skirt and a wrap top. I think it is two pieces. The top has gold ribbons that are diagonal (they follow the edge of the fabric instead of going vertically) and mesh cap sleeves. The skirt ruffles start below her natural waist, with gold-outlined pockets. There's a spot for a radio and I believe there are shorts under this. Then there's a half capelet with a zipper and a tie belt. You can see the shorts in the back when she turns around, but I don't know how the skirt is cut to do that. Brittany: a black jumpsuit with short sleeves. There are big pockets everywhere, and thin white topstitching outlining all the pockets and the hemlines. The crotch is a little wonky but he keeps one hand in a pocket the whole time so that might be it.

Anna: so the “kimono jumpsuit” translates to a kimono top with a loose fit. The short sleeves and the lapels have a strip of gold ribbon or something, and it's basically a V-neck with gold stripes that run straight down the front. I thought it was a wrap top at first but it's not cut that way. The sleeves have big round openings so they kind of bell out. The pants are just basic black pants, they're maybe a little short. There are a bunch of pleats on the top also. Prajje: a short sleeved top with a small peplum, made of different fabrics. There's a plain black fabric, but also either a print or lace on a white lining? On one shoulder are the epaulets, but with the stripes going vertically. It almost looks like those old uniforms where you'd have gold rope around your arm at your shoulder? The print fabric panels are on a diagonal, so it's her right lapel and like, most of the right peplum, and a similar cut on the back. The pants are in black and these are definitely cropped.

Elaine pretends they care what the clients think, which is absurd considering they always eliminate people for listening too much to clients and not talking them out of nonsense. Rami is up first. It's very functional but still looks like a uniform. The tailoring is great. Nina asks her if it passes the twerk test. Nina. Can we at least pretend to be professionals. I still can't see what is happening with the back of the skirt but whatever. Clearly no one gives a shit about actual fashion. Korto is next and she does take the jacket off so we can see underneath. It's sleeveless and the neckline is interesting. It's kind of a keyhole with a slit in the middle? One of the guest judges says it's Bond Girl vibes. Korto put the neon yellow on purpose for variety against everyone wearing black. Brandon doesn't like the romper but Nina loves the vest. Hmm.

Anna's client says he needs to be comfortable as a captain. His pants are cropped for sure. He's got a radio clipped to his belt, but the belt is loose enough that the whole thing sags there. Brandon tells her that her client has broad shoulders and the epaulets she's placed are too small. Or maybe too close together? Anyway he doesn't have enough authority. It feels too casual for the captain, a silk top is not formal enough. Nina hates the neckline. Bishme's client says she wanted sexy, and it turns out the whole look is neoprene. The weird back thing is a vent, so a sheer piece. Nina loves the neoprene. I still don't know how breathable it is. Everyone really loves how fresh it is and it still looks good. It does look very crisp and it does look like a uniform, although maybe a fashion uniform costume. But a uniform.

Prajje's client wanted a lot of change, but she also stands up for Prajje making the design his own. Elaine thinks it's maybe too much Prajje and not enough to fit the challenge. The print is distracting and putting a captain's hat on her, a hat which let's be clear was put on the accessory wall for this challenge, is making it costumey. No self-respecting costume designer is making a black top with a peplum and diagonal lace panels for a captain's outfit. A costume designer would make a look like Bishme's. The jacket shape is great though, and Nina likes the parts without the lace. Laurence brings out her leather jacket and her client talks about lightweight and comfortable and airy when he's wearing said jacket. Oh but the jacket isn't meant for the boat, just for later. Uh huh. Brandon for some reason asks if it's easy to take the jumpsuit on and off (I guess asking about going to the bathroom) which prompts him to start stripping. It's fine but they are bored and think Laurence could have pushed herself more. Maybe some more stripes. Laurence says “I know, I just...didn't” and she kind of shrugs.

Kara Saun's ridiculous outfit is next. There is so much going on, double breasted buttons and a gold zipper and the front panel is a different fabric and a shawl collar. Nina says she wouldn't know if this was a guest or not. It's beautiful but not practical. Kara Saun argues that military dress uniforms are like this and this is for a special event. But no one else interpreted the challenge that way. Brittany is last. This is a perfect uniform for an engineer. It's fashionable and the topstitching is great. And it's formal enough to be on deck serving guests.

Back in the Scrap Bin the clients are waiting. Brandon says the top three are Rami, Brittany, and Bishme. Yeah I agree. Bishme's look is so good you could wear it just out on the town. It's elegant, simple, but still fashionable. And they love the neoprene I guess. Brandon wants to talk about Rami, and how he is in the top this week. They all seem to have pretty generic praise for Rami, although Nina does say his look is “day to evening, casual to formal” whatever that means. Brittany had great details, and Brandon thinks she's figuring out how to put her topstitching into every challenge. Nina says she maybe had the hardest challenge, because the chief engineer has to be able to do actual work in his uniform.

Kara Saun did not meet the challenge. It was just fashion. Nina says the fit was too tight on every piece of it. Anna's client loved the look, but it was too flimsy. He looked too comfortable and casual, which is bad for the captain. Prajje did too much. The print took it over. Elaine tries to make another metaphor about how he sunk his client's ship or something.

The winner is Bishme! It's his first win this season. Brittany and Rami are also in. Laurence and Korto are in. Nina tells the bottom three they've come a long way. Anna is out. Prajje and Kara Saun are in. Anna is already crying and she says she's going to do fashion until she dies. Anna says she just has to keep moving forward.

Next week: supposedly make whatever you want.
