Previously on “Project Runway All-Stars”: we had a very contrived challenge that was supposedly about “double bind”, which is when you get conflicting criticisms, aka what the judges here always do. But then everyone started talking about how this was about women not being able to be themselves? Which makes no sense. Anyway, the whole thing ended up being an excuse for nonsense judging and Laurence won, which is whatever. Korto argued with the judges so I guess that was the excuse to send her home. Bishme complains about being in the bottom. Everyone has been, so far, but he's still pissed. They're all tired.
Christian shows up to the runway with a giant fan made of peacock feathers. It is time for “male peacocking”. That's the trend of men having fun on the red carpet and being extra. So the challenge is to make a menswear look for the red carpet. You must stand out and attract as much attention as possible. A two day challenge, with $5000 for the winner.
They all pick models without drama. Bishme says he's not a peacock but he makes crazy stuff. Prajje is much more comfortable with this. His inspiration is Lil Nas X which was an example so it's the right idea. Laurence finds out at Mood she gets an extra $200 for winning last week. So she is making both skinny pants and a kilt. Real talk: what makes a garment a “kilt” and not a “skirt”? Still haven't figured that out. Prajje can't buy the fabric he wants, because it's on hold...for Christian. Heh. Rami is going to try the one shoulder jacket that I think he's tried to do already. Christian tries to talk him into a skirt. Brittany has snaps happening. I don't know. Prajje is pleased with his purchases.
Eight hours left to go today. Rami has made his own clothes, but not really for male clients. Brittany admits she really took a long time to get over the tuxedo challenge on her season. Which was a very bad outfit, as they show us. She talks about overcoming, but in the real world, you could just say you never make menswear and it would be just fine. Prajje is of course painting on his fabric.
Christian shows up to point out there's a whole empty table and it's very quiet. Brittany seems to have shiny flared pants in teal, and a white blouse with a giant bow. She says she's not worried this time about menswear, because she did it already for the Below Deck people and that went well. Laurence says something about a bullet-proof vest. And...something else that she can't even talk about because she's laughing too hard. Prajje explains his paintings, and that when he cuts the fabric you won't see the whole symbol. He has several other fabrics and Christian tells him to edit. He could really use $5000 to bring his child to America, and pay for immigration. Rami talks about working bridal elements into his look. Bishme has to physically grab Christian's hand so he will fistbump properly. Heh. He's got a Western look going on. Models won't be here until tomorrow morning. Prajje talks about a cape sleeve.
In the morning Brittany gets to call home and talk to her husband. They haven't been showing the phone calls home. When the call starts it looks like she's already been crying. Her husband gases her up. Everyone jokes about how Brittany is wearing her wedding ring and how Anna was flirting with everyone anyway.
Model fitting. Christian walks around being nosy and both Prajje and Bishme are good at getting him to leave. Bishme's model gets poked by a pin somewhere, and he freaks out because he's bled on the actual garment. Christian's advice is actually to just replace the panel, instead of trying to wash it. I will tell you, as a person who has reason to know how to get blood out of things, if you rinse it right now in cold water it will probably be OK. It is a small piece, like on jeans, the part between the top of the pocket and the waistband. Prajje immediately says “hydrogen peroxide, girl” and Bishme runs off. This works also, in case you need to know. Laurence still needs to make a shirt to go under her vest. She's going to do it tomorrow. Prajje demands attention and Christian basically says a cape sleeve and a pleated cape in the back of the jacket is too much. Then Prajje is like “OMG who sent for you?!”
Rami says he loves that fashion can make an impact. He interviews that his mother died when he was young, and his grandmother wore black for a decade. He used to point at her closet to try to get her to wear colors. Aww. We call time without a lot of bitching about how much work is left to do.
In the “Night Lounge” Laurence mixes drinks and everyone giggles about it. I'm not sure what the point of this scene is, except to look cute.
Runway Day. There's not as much frantic working as I thought there would be. Laurence's blouse looks like it's made of the same sheer pinstriped fabric Brittany used last week. Christian asks if she likes it, and eventually she decides she doesn't, so just a vest with no shirt. Christian also questions Prajje's shirt, which is just bronze mesh, but it's simple and Prajje refuses to be swayed. Bishme hand sews a hat. Brittany wasn't going to put the giant pussy bow, and Christian promises she can throw him under the bus if the judges hate it. Prajje worries because Brittany's pants are pretty close to Korto's pants, and she went home.
Guest judge is Colman Domingo. This man dresses in colors and prints so he knows how this works. Brittany: shiny teal pants and a white top. The top has sheer stripes, and puffy sleeves and a big pussy bow in the front. The sleeves have frilled cuffs, and the whole thing feels sheer but not as sheer as her look last week. But there is plenty of skin showing. The pants are wide-legged pants with snaps up the front, Brittany's signature sportswear look. The snaps are open from about the knee down. He looks ridiculous but I'm pretty sure I've seen pictures of Harry Styles in a sheer blouse with frilly cuffs so it's not so far out there.
Rami: a one shouldered coat and pants in white. The whole coat has diagonal seams, so think a regular suit coat lapel, but under one arm, across the chest, and over the shoulder. Then four or five panels, with the seams parallel to the lapel, and a full sleeve on that side. On the other side is just his bare arm. The jacket has an asymmetrical hem (longer on the side opposite the sleeve), and then the pants are flowy and loose. Under the jacket is some kind of collar construction that looks like a waistcoat? It almost looks like there is a vest under this jacket, but it's the other side of the suit jacket lapel. When you focus on his neck and upper chest, it looks like really wide lapels, but on one side the jacket just ends, and on the other side, you have the diagonal seams. At the bottom of this jacket, it's just silk that flows down into a train. This is a Star Trek costume and I mean that as a compliment.
Prajje: hot pink suit with white paint lines on it. The jacket is cropped and has gold buttons, and looks like a ringmaster's jacket. Regular sleeves and in the back there are long tails that hit the floor. Under the jacket is a bronze mesh shirt with a mock turtleneck. The pants don't seem that unusual, except that he's cut the fabric to leave some of the pattern, so it's not just random lines. The hips look a little wide, but maybe that's just the cut of the pants. They're pleated pants, and Prajje is just now realizing the runway lights are garbage and the color doesn't look right.
Laurence: a black sleeveless vest that hits right at his belly button. It's quilted, so it looks like armor or a bullet-proof vest. Then a royal blue kilt and leggings. The kilt has pleats but it hits below the knee so it just looks like a skirt. They show that there are three or four black leather cords for a belt, but that also shows that there's no waistband on this skirt, no hem. It's a little bit of a mullet hem, so longer in the back.
Bishme: a suit in lime green. First of all there is a wide-brimmed hat with a scarf wrapped around his neck and trailing to the ground. Pretty sure the scarf is attached to the hat. Then a sleeveless jacket, with wide lapels. Where the closure is, there is a strip of fabric sticking out of that side and wrapped around his waist like a belt. Then matching pants with cargo pockets. There are also flaps or something on each hip. It kind of looks like big patch pockets, but I don't think it's actual pockets, just pieces of fabric that add some bulk.
We're back to doing that shit of “one of our favorite looks” and you wait to see who it is. Anyway, it's Rami. He wanted to make something romantic, and sexy and bridal. It's original, and the color is great. Elaine thinks the fabric looks cheap but she's going to be magnanimous and ignore that. Brandon would even wear it. Bishme is also on the top. He says this is for a Western movie premiere, for the star. It's playful and you for sure make a statement. Elaine drools over the model because she's the worst most of the time. Brandon tries to give her shit but Nina says Bishme always thinks about his model's body which is pretty much true. It works without the hat, but you kind of need the hat? Bishme wanted to do a train, but not an obvious train.
Prajje was in the bottom. Nina hates the bronze shirt, because it's too shiny. Is it “shine with shine”? I don't think the pink is that shiny. Elaine wants the color story, and basically Prajje wanted a bold pink and a metallic shirt. I don't think this lighting is doing him any favors. It's not telling the story he wants it to tell. Brandon says it's not elevated enough. Brittany is in the top. She wanted it to look like maybe they pulled it from a women's store. It's sexy and disco. Elaine just has to say, the fabric looks Gucci. It's teal fabric with tiny polka dots. Somehow it's “referential” but it fits the challenge. Also Brandon wants to complain they've seen the snaps and sportswear from her before. Whatever Brandon.
So Laurence is in the bottom. She does call it a kilt. She also tells them the shirt didn't work. It's maybe not far enough. The kilt and the vest are two different vibes, so now it's confused. Nina wants to know the story of this look. Laurence says herself but as a man. So masculine but a little feminine. It's opposites? The pieces by themselves are fine, but they don't work together.
Rami pushed himself, and it's original. It's inspired and elegant. Nina loves the twist on a tuxedo. Bishme gave them a moment. The color is perfect, but maybe the hat is too far. But Nina says on the runway it grabs your attention which is what you want. Brittany's look is fun and playful, and she's also pushing herself. The pants are great but also referential. Nina points this out and they put up a shot of Harry Styles in a blouse with a pussy bow and wide-legged pants. Fair.
Prajje was confusing, and Nina is very offended by the shirt. I guess pink and copper is the worst. They whine that they don't know what happened to the Prajje of earlier. What happened is he tried to change it up, because he knew eventually you guys would complain that you were bored, and then right on cue you all whined that you wanted the exact same thing from him all the time. Laurence made something super boring. They hate the cropped vest and the low waist of the skirt together. Both Laurence and Prajje liked their looks, and the guest judge is like, you need to fit the challenge. And now Brandon and Elaine are also complaining about how you need to put some of yourself in the look but also think about the client. You literally just complained that you don't know where the Prajje you like is in these clothes. You can either get Prajje making what he likes or Prajje fitting the challenge. You can't say you want Prajje but also he shouldn't put himself in the outfit. This is why no one liked your fake “double bind” challenge, ELAINE. You guys do this shit all the time.
The winner is Rami. This is his first challenge win. Bishme and Brittany are in. Laurence was too reserved and the proportions were off. Prajje's color story were confusing and there were too many ideas. Prajje is out. Laurence is in. Hmm. He loves the look, and you'll see it again because he'll probably be wearing it. Brandon says some bullshit about taking critiques in stride. He has no regrets and he's proud of everything he's made.
Next week: be inspired by some room full of mirrors, make something avant-garde.
