Previously on “Project Runway All-Stars”: we had the client challenge, which involved “Below Deck” and making uniforms. It was actually very interesting, because no one was in the bottom for not dressing a “real person” but instead for making terrible designs. Bishme got his first win for designing a uniform out of neoprene, which looked great but I'm still not sold on how breathable it is. Anna designed a kimono-style top for a captain's uniform, and was sent home for not making it formal enough. (click for more)
OK first of all, up front, there is some Amber Alert and I am missing chunks of this recording. Hopefully nothing important.
No one in the Scrap Bin is sad. They're not partying or anything but the last few weeks Brittany especially was sobbing and being emotional and she is totally fine. I don't think Anna was that terrible of a designer but I guess that's who they all decided to pick on this season. Christian appears and says the next challenge is a Project Runway first. Make whatever you want. Really? Everyone celebrates and Prajje screams for a ridiculous amount of time. I don't buy it. You're going to let them do whatever? And you're telling them this early? No twist? No restrictions? I'll believe it when I see it. Christian gives them two days and says it better be good. They will show their looks at some park which looks like it's on an island somewhere. Outdoor runway, rain or shine. Christian also gloats that maybe this is too much freedom, because they won't know what to make. Bishme gets first pick of models, and apparently there are extra models in the stack. I think they all take skinny models. Bishme walks out with a plant for some reason. Spoiler: there really isn't a twist coming.
Everyone wakes up for breakfast and sketching at the hotel. Kara Saun brags that she, Laurence, and Korto are a sister circle and they're so supportive of each other. It sounds like everyone is extending this “freedom” challenge to the freedom of being themselves. I feel like everyone is dropping the word “freedom” as much as possible. Several big complicated coats. At Mood Christian gives them $750 each and 30 minutes. Kara Saun buys pastel feathers. Rami is told to do something insane. Laurence buys purple leather.
Nine hours to work today. Brittany says this is an exciting challenge but also terrifying. You could get out of control easily. Prajje is working vodou into his look. He's making an eveningwear look instead of the streetwear he's been making this whole time.
Christian appears which I feel is early? Kara Saun has some sheer fabric with thin lines of feathers making a veiny pattern. She talks about her non-profit, which helps foster kids make short films. She wants something big and sculptural. Laurence is making a tailored jacket and a long skirt. She's got nothing cut yet though. Christian doesn't know if the judges will know Prajje's look is his, because it's different. I don't know why that's a bad thing, unless they're going to penalize him for it. But it sounds like a good idea. Bishme has a visor with a long veil, and Christian is obsessed. Korto has a big robe and she's trying to work leather into the sleeves. We do not see if he says anything to Brittany or Rami.
There is some drama involving Prajje, who is at Korto's workstation writing her a note. Korto says in confessional that there is “a lot” of plagiarism going on. “A lot” translates to Brittany is making the same top as Prajje did in the 90s challenge. First of all that's not “a lot”. Second his top was a band of white fabric, wrapped around the back and then the ends are crossed over the breasts and attached behind her head. I'm sure I could find dozens of tops like this. It's a bra made from a long strip of fabric, it's not groundbreaking. Prajje says he'd appreciate a note, whatever that means. Now they're all gossiping about it in the sewing room, because I guess now we've included “high waisted pants” in the list of things Prajje has invented. They're not even the same color. Prajje “graciously” in confessional says that maybe Brittany just lives in her own world where she's not aware that she's stealing looks. Kara Saun advises him to leave it alone, because it's for the judges to figure out. Prajje says he's going to leave it, which I doubt. People who are really going to drop it never announce how they're going to drop it.
Model fitting. Rami says that this challenge is about religious freedom in Palestine. Design is what helped him deal with that anxiety. For some reason the models are chatty and asking the designers like, where they're from and stuff. Laurence talks about being private, and they just asked about her accent, but sure. There are a lot of shots of Brittany talking to her model in her look, interspersed with Prajje watching her. It doesn't look the same but I guess we need some drama now that Anna is gone.
Bishme is using chocolate brown silk and making giant ruffles, but no one says a word about how Anna always had ruffles. Laurence says Kara Saun's look is very busy. Prajje claims he likes Brittany's look but his was better. I don't think they're the same, Brittany has the bottom pulled down so it's long stripes and less of a bra.
Suddenly it says “Day of Runway”. Did I miss something? I don't remember seeing two days? Whatever. Also no one seems dressed for a runway. Maybe they are because it's going to be outside? Everyone asks Bishme about his look and he answers them all with “I think so, once I'm done with it”. Laurence is working on her skirt, which, did she leave it until the day of? Kara Saun is focusing on her jacket, because it's going to stay closed the whole time. Bishme has some fabric that looks interesting when stretched. He's giving up on his exaggerated shoulders because the judges flat out told him they're terrible. Christian shows up and confirms it's the day of the runway. Kara Saun has a cape also and she claims “a lot of look” is her signature. Bishme fucks with Christian a little bit that he's going to send his model out in a jacket and panties. Christian then wanders the workroom yelling at various people. Laurence's skirt is very tight, but she doesn't really have time to do anything but cut a slit. I think she wants to add a panel.
We all head to the park, where it is pretty cloudy and Christian tells everyone the models will be walking with umbrellas. Rami is very worried about his silk dress.
So now it's dark. Christian was crowing about the natural light, but there are giant flood lights everywhere. Christian gets to sit with the judges, but not judge. No guest judges today, which to me is an immediate indication that they've already decided who should be eliminated and they don't want to risk a guest judge going off script and loving that person. I am still convinced that's what happened with Chris March in Season 4 and the “surprise, all 4 of you are going to the finale” and his subsequent elimination. They wanted him to be fourth place but the guest judge that day wouldn't stop talking about how amazing he was so they couldn't get rid of him then. OK, OK, it could also be that whoever it was saw the rain and said “Fuck this” and canceled last minute. Korto: big coat over a plain black top and pants. Somehow the lighting here is even worse than the lighting on the runway and that's saying a lot. The top has a high neck and the pants are just basic straight legged pants. The coat is a cream brocade with a green pattern. It's huge, with big loose sleeves that end at the elbow, and it hits the floor. When the model actually turns around and they're not shooting her backlit with four floodlights, the top is revealed to be a ribbed sweater, and the pants are a dark gray. It's also windy so it's hard to see.
Prajje: So this is where my recording cut out and I had to go back and fill this in. A green crop top, with slightly puffy long sleeves and a high crew neck. The skirt has diagonal pleats around her hips, and then a sparkly kind of sheer fabric in a ball gown shape below that, all in green. The model also has a gold snake (I think a repurposed necklace) in her hair, draped over her forehead. And tall green boots. I think it's backless? Brittany: OK my recording cut this too so I had to get it from later. A pink jacket and cargo pants. The jacket rests at the tips of her shoulders, like it's almost off the shoulder. It's baggy, but I'm not sure if there are pockets or other details. The pants have lighter pink strips of fabric, and big pockets. Because I'm getting this later I don't know if she took off the jacket on the runway or not. There's a lot of weird gathering.
Kara Saun: purple cropped coat. The sleeves are covered in rows of pastel pink and blue ostrich feathers, with a high collar and some kind of sparkly fabric that matches the feathers. More feathers on the vertical seams in the bodice. Under this coat is a long pink gown. It looks sheer with a branching pattern, also in pink. There is also a cape in the back, or at least a rectangular piece of fabric that hangs from the back of the coat. Rami: a long silk gown, in pale green and green-gray. It feels like the darker color is silk and the lighter color is maybe a heavier weight of silk? The bodice is a V neck with no sleeves, with one side in each color. Then there's a panel of the light silk across her stomach like a sash, and hanging down that hip. It moves beautifully, and there's a train. Brandon keeps saying things look great “from afar”. He can't see either. The back is mostly open, with the light color continuing the sash effect. At the end of the runway Mimi closes her umbrella to pose, because Mimi is extra in the best way.
Laurence: a black leather jacket, short sleeved and slightly cropped, and a long skirt in purple leather. The jacket is of course tailored to within an inch of its life, and the skirt has some panels at the top so it looks like black panties on top of the skirt. Whatever panel Laurence put in, the model can walk in it, pretty much. The shoulders are a little square and there is a double row of buttons down the front like a double breasted suit. Brandon for some reason goes on a monologue about how amazing Laurence is at cutting skirts her model can walk in, which is annoying because she almost couldn't and also why are we talking about this now and not during judging? You're just showing your hand. Bishme: a cropped jacket, in what looks like leather but I don't think it is, a bra, and a sheer skirt. The skirt is completely sheer to her knees, where it is buried in giant brown ruffles. You know those costumes (I think from Brazil and Carnival) of men with maracas, where their forearms and legs from the knee down are covered in multicolored ruffles? It looks like that, although it's a skirt. She's got what looks like a ball cap with a very long veil that's waving around in the breeze. The jacket has a high collar, and it's kind of shiny which is why I don't think it's leather. It's also backless.
OK so we're going to do actual judging inside, thank God. Brittany and Korto are in. So you see why I don't know anything about Brittany's look. I guess it doesn't matter. Korto is immediately salty about not being in the top, but I can't figure out who she's complaining about. Bishme is in the top. Elaine thinks this is bridal. The jacket is actually pleather, but it looks expensive. Nina says as an editor she's looking for someone who is just setting trends. I didn't notice but her jacket has two horizontal stripes in the sleeves around her elbows.
Prajje is in the bottom. He tells them he's done eveningwear before, and it's something he does. He also talks about his inspiration. Elaine tells Prajje this isn't him, because it's not modern or fresh, and it doesn't fit. It does fit, it's just not tight. Brandon thinks there's too much going on. Nina objects to the placement of the snake? Like if he'd left it as a necklace it would be fine? Whatever. She also notes the proportions. I can't get over Elaine saying “this isn't you” when Prajje spent quite some time at the beginning of the episode saying this is him, along with several pics from the producers to back him up. Rami is in the top. He wanted freedom of movement in this design. The fabric is risky, because you can't make mistakes, but because there aren't any it highlights how good he is at this. Nina says the cut on the bias is driving her insane but it's so glamorous and “perfection”.
Laurence is the top. There's a shot of Kara Saun looking sad. Brandon asks Laurence where she learned to cut a skirt, and she says it's a bunch of math and body and she just...it's in her head. She is talking about fashion school, and she gets emotional and talks about how she got pregnant but still went to fashion school. Nina tries to give her therapy about how she's very strict but when she's soft too it's amazing. Brandon says maybe the jacket isn't super modern, but her skill in construction is too impressive. Kara Saun mentions fashion design and her non-profit. It's whimsical but there's a ton going on. Elaine doesn't like the train. Brandon asks what's up with the top, and so she takes off the jacket. The branch pattern continues up to her shoulders, anyway, but on one side the branches are purple, maybe placed over the sheer fabric pattern? But she ran out of time? Also the model has these big pasties, which I imagine are there so she's not totally braless, but they're also not matching so I'm pretty confident they're not part of the dress. When she turns around, the dress is backless, but there is purple opaque satin across her shoulders. Elaine declares this more breathtaking without the jacket. If she had finished the dress, sure. Nina says at least her looks are never boring.
Back in the Scrap Bin Korto bitches that the judges want Kara Saun to change who she is. I mean, that's the nature of this show. You were on the show, you know how it works. You need to cater to these three people, and it's not always going to match up with what you want to do. So now is judging time, and this is the second time my recording cut out for an Amber Alert, but at least this time it's just the judges repeating what they just said. I missed all of the discussion about the top looks.
Kara Saun put everything in one look and it was too much. Elaine wants to argue that there is nothing you could put on the bottom of this look to make the jacket work. Nina thinks maybe, but the other two don't seem to agree. Nina says in the real world, designers have fantastical designs, but Elaine says it was a circus. They have fantastical designs like Bishme's skirt. Prajje wanted to push himself, but it was not modern. Elaine says some shit about how he is in the top so much, and he's not finding his groove but he's stuck. Look I don't think he's stuck. He could have just done some streetwear and a jacket with graffiti on it and called it a day. Nina points out he wanted to surprise them. Which he did technically. Brandon asks which one of these two could you see walking down a runway today.
The winner is Bishme. Rami and Laurence are in. Bishme wants to get to the finale, and he's excited to get to a place where he can show them a collection. Brandon says that Kara Saun and Prajje both delivered on runway moments. Kara Saun was too fantastical and not fashion enough, and Prajje had a dated silhouette. Kara Saun is out. So Prajje is in. The judges tell her how great she is and she says her mom wanted her to come back and then died two weeks later. Jeez. It looks like Kara Saun is leaving notes on everyone's workstations as she leaves.
Next week: one look with two styles. I have no idea what that means.
