Previously on “Project Runway All-Stars”: the challenge was to make lingerie inspired looks. We also had models of all genders just to screw with people. Kara Saun made a 1921-inspired sheer dress that was also tied to Black Wall Street and the Tulsa Massacre, and she won. Fabio was worried about being too boring, which is why he's been in the bottom, but he went too far in the other direction and was eliminated. (click for more)
Brandon returns to the Scrap Bin. This was edited falsely in the last episode: Brandon came in, said how Christian was not there but this was “a tough one” so he was here instead. Then they had him tell Fabio to clean up his space. Now they are presenting the “tough one” line but it's presented as him coming after Fabio has left and then asking if they all drink back here. He gets some wine and talks to them about how he knows they're tired, but they all have successful careers. They need to find the strength and keep going. Then he leaves, and he didn't even drink any wine. As they discuss what the next challenge might be, they get a video from Christian saying he's out of town preparing something for them. Field trip tomorrow!
They drive to Connecticut, which someone says is where Christian has a store. They are all excited. Rami is proud of him. Christian just did a collab with Gloria Vanderbilt jeans. This is a throwback challenge, the all denim challenge. In the back there are just jeans on every available surface. Obviously make something, but the twist is you will have head-to-head battles. Whoever loses their battle is up for elimination. Since Kara Saun won, she gets to pick her opponent first. She picks Anna, supposedly because they're both strong, although I do think it would be interesting. Brittany picks Laurence, because Laurence specializes in leather so maybe Brittany will be better with denim. Rami picks Korto, which means it's Bishme vs. Prajje. Prajje is upset because they're friends. Winner gets $5000. Oh and a one day challenge.
They have ten minutes to get whatever denim they can. It's a shitshow as expected. Anna dumps a bunch of stuff on the floor and claims the pile, but Korto is pissy because she feels Anna is just dumping the entire table on the floor to claim it. To be fair Anna admits that's what she's doing. The whole room is cleared out and Prajje thinks they should get paid for cleaning up.
Back in the workroom there are zippers and bleach and grommets. Brittany actually asks Laurence if she ever works with denim, and Laurence says “I work with denim like I work with leather”. Brittany curses and then interviews that she's still going to win. Anna has never worked with denim. Never? Kara Saun of course has worked with lots of denim. Anna randomly says in confessional that she's more herself in America than she was in China. Prajje wants to weave the waistbands of the jeans into a new textile. Bishme seems to be making fringe. Anna decides to bleach all of her denim to make a white outfit, while Prajje is painting messages on his. Laurence doesn't understand why Brittany would pick her, because shouldn't you pick someone you think you can beat? Kara Saun basically says she picked Anna because Anna is not good, without actually saying that.
Christian comes in, missing the song everyone has made up about working. Korto has a big coat, and Christian says it should have another surprise. Maybe some tie-dye with bleach. Christian and Rami commiserate about how they did this exact challenge on their season. Whatever Rami has drawn is apparently amazing. Some skirt treatment that I'm not sure he has time for. Anna wants to bleach her entire outfit “because I want to do it”. She needs to bleach more than just a small sample, but she's trying to push herself. Kara Saun is making a cape with fringe. Christian is worried about all of them. Prajje has a lot of look, but he says Bishme scares him so he'd rather be able to edit later. Maybe not a jacket again? Bishme's dress is nice but it doesn't look like he's started on his coat and the whole thing is shredded. Laurence has a gown and Christian joins in taunting Brittany for her dumb decision. But who else is she going to beat? Anna already got picked. Brittany's dress is boring. Christian just kinds of abandons her to fix it. She's starting to freak out.
Model fitting. Bishme's jacket needs to either be a cropped jacket or floor length. Brittany's skirt is not sewn up in the back and she thinks a zipper will fix this. I'm not sure it's even going to close up. Korto tie-dyes some of her denim. Anna asks for advice, and Korto tells her if she wants to bleach her entire outfit, she has to do it tonight. Otherwise she can't wash it out and she'll burn her model.
The night lounge has ice cream sundaes that will somehow take their minds off this challenge. This has not worked for Anna, who didn't rinse her garment out and so can't put it on her model. They all decide the best solution for her is to start over completely in the morning. Oof. Korto is not that upset because they showed her telling Anna about rinsing her garment and Anna I guess ignored her.
Runway Day. They have five hours, which is a suspiciously long time. Korto's bleach has worked so she's pleased. Rami has a big panel with a lattice weave, and it's too short but he says it just has to work. Christian finds out about Anna starting over and he's shocked. He's also shocked she didn't know she had to rinse out her fabric. Korto says “I'm glad I rinsed mine off!” and then immediately starts apologizing and saying it's just a little joke and she's kidding. All the models walk in wearing their own denim which I think is suspicious. But whatever. Christian moves from “one day challenges are fun” to “head to head challenges stress me out”.
Nina is gone again, supposedly returning next week. Guest judges are Willy Chavarria and Julia Fox. Prajje: a jumpsuit that looks like it's made from all the waistbands of the jeans. It's very patchwork, and has narrow legs and no sleeves. The front is pretty open, with two bands to hold the sides closed so the model doesn't flash everyone. It's not wildly different colors but enough so you can see each waistband. Her lower back is exposed and it looks like it fits well. Bishme: a short dress with a sweetheart neckline on the bodice and halter straps. It's dark but pretty basic. Over this is a coat that is all denim fringe. I think the coat is cropped and it actually looks finished. The dress fits very well and I'm impressed he finished that coat.
Korto: a short pencil skirt and a slightly puffy jacket, in dark denim with lines of bleach. I can't tell what's happening with this coat, other than that it's got bleach and it's not a trench. Rami: a cropped top with slightly pointed shoulders. Denim is stiff enough they might have just draped the fabric over her shoulder and it stuck out some. It looks like a pair of pants upside down, with the waistband under her boobs and the legs over her shoulders. The skirt is pretty short, but on the top and bottom of the skirt is a latticework of woven waistbands. It's interesting and the vertical stripes continue on the solid part of the skirt.
Anna: so basically what Anna has done is make a skirt that looks like the tops of several pairs of jeans, sewn together crooked. I don't think it's actual tops, because there aren't zippers. But it's tubes of denim with a waistband at the top and bottom, one over her chest, and then the next one is sewn on one side so it hangs crooked. Then the next one down is sewn on the opposite side so it's crooked the other way. It hits in a weird spot just below her knees and the bodice looks too tight but it's interesting, at least. Kara Saun: a knee-length dress with a halter top and a pencil skirt. The top has fringe over her boobs, made of strips with grommets or snaps. The skirt has open panels on either side where there are just horizontal strips holding it together. The solid part of the skirt has more strips to continue the pattern all the way around.
Laurence: a floor-length gown with a train. The skirt is narrow, almost to the point where the model can't walk properly. The top has a mock turtleneck and short puffy sleeves. Over her boobs there are actually round panels, instead of seaming or something, so it draws attention. It looks heavy but it's also an evening gown. There's a round keyhole in the back. Brittany: a short minidress with a row of buttons up the front, and horizontal strips all up the rest of the dress. The dress is a tube with spaghetti straps but the strips make it interesting. Over this is a puffer jacket, in three sections, each section a different color for an ombre effect. She says the strips are frayed hems.
The guest judges praise all the looks. Bishme, Korto, Kara Saun, and Laurence all are the winners. So that means Prajje, Rami, Anna, and Brittany are up for elimination. We'll start with the tops. Bishme wanted to do something classy. It's a fur alternative, and forward thinking. It looks like a new material. Korto talks about lightening up her fabric so you could see details. I don't know if you can but sure. Elaine is even dumber than I thought because she thinks this is ink? She doesn't know bleached denim when she sees it? There's like, double sleeves and stuff, and Brandon says the bleach makes them look more closely. That's fair.
Kara Saun had a great fit. They think there's a bustier but it's just cut perfectly. They make the argument to Anna (well Elaine does anyway) that her dress was cool too, but “more women” could wear Kara Saun's outfit. They aren't judging on that, so I'm not sure why they brought it up. Kara Saun's outfit is intricate though. As is Laurence. They can't shut up about the back of Laurence's gown. The neckline is a waistband. There are tiny black spikes on the sleeves and they all shit on those for a while.
Time for the losers. Brittany explains about the hems and the puffer coat. The coat is great but maybe lose the line of buttons down the front. There's already a lot going on. But Julia says she's sold on the vibe of this girl. The hood of the jacket isn't padded, so maybe that could change also. Brandon says it's forward thinking. Prajje had so much detail, but they don't necessarily like the silhouette. Maybe also not an open back. Why not? Elaine whines about the styling and then says it's not flattering. What is she even talking about? It fits her so well. Oh but you have a beautiful body! Elaine, just admit you are uncomfortable seeing back rolls on someone. You all bitch and moan when someone doesn't make a tight garment with a lot of skin for a plus-sized model but you also don't want to actually see the plus-sized model. That's just how her body is shaped, it has nothing to do with the garment.
Anna already got praise, so it's whatever. She tells them she fucked up her first dress. Also her model is wearing a chain across her chin? That's not necessary. The fit is weird but now they are going to give her a pass. Brandon thinks she can't walk, but I think she can walk more easily than Laurence's model and you all loved her. Rami talks about plaid, but Elaine calls the part over her stomach “dated”. The top and the skirt don't really go together. They hate the length of the skirt. Brandon is all, I don't recognize this hardness from you, when they complain about seeing the same thing all the time and then when you change it up they whine that it's not what you're good at.
Kara Saun was great but maybe not the winner. Bishme's jacket was great but the dress was pretty basic. Laurence made art. See and she also had an open back but they were drooling over it. But she had a skinny model. They can't handle that Korto put bleach on her garment. I don't know. They quickly think Brittany was safe, and also Anna only needs a little editing. Rami was too ambitious and he didn't make something fashion forward. Brandon does point out that Anna just sewed some tops together, and Elaine is like “but it looks cool”. Elaine is not sounding intelligent here. Prajje lost focus and didn't edit. They don't have a lot of things to say about it.
Kara Saun is in. The winner is Laurence. Yeah, it was pretty impressive. Korto and Bishme are in. Brittany is in. Anna's fit was off. Rami had too many ideas and was not modern. Prajje needed to edit. Rami is out. Anna and Prajje are in. Brandon says something about how Rami had a part in Brandon's journey here? Huh? Prajje says the same thing, but I believe that. He stands behind his design. Christian says it's hard to see Rami leave because he knows how good Rami is. Rami knows his customers trust him. Christian doesn't want him to leave yet so he's using the Save. Woo! They're both crying and emotional. Rami says he didn't get the chance to show them what he can do, and now he can. He also says he didn't get the chance to say how proud he is of Christian for everything he's accomplished. Aww! No pressure but Rami has to kill it next challenge. Everyone is so happy he's not leaving.
Next week: the real client challenge, which has to do with Below Deck.
