TAR 35, Recap Leg 11, 12/13/23

Welcome to Leg 11! Last time, on Searching For the Pot of Gold at the End of the Rainbow, 4 teams raced from Sweden to Dublin Ireland. There was much Riverdancing and hurling, and Steve and Anna Leigh fell behind and were eliminated. And then there were three: Rob and Corey, the father with hearing impairment and his son, who have one of the most loving father-son relationships I’ve seen on television in a long time; Greg and John, the brothers and computer scientists who always see every challenge as a puzzle to solve; and Joel and Garrett, best friends and beard enthusiasts who seem to have kept up with the young guns and are always able to come back from their setbacks, mostly caused by Joel. (Toyouke: “I think I'm OK with any of these teams winning? Very unusual.”) Who will win The Amazing Race 35? (click for more)

Arrival at the pit stop last episode:

1st – Rob and Corey, Team ASL Family

2nd – Greg and John, Team Cat Dads

3rd – Joel and Garrett, Team Dad Bod

St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Dublin, Ireland

Rob/Corey (1st)

Of all legs to not show departure times. . .

Clue: Fly to your FINAL DESTINATION CITY: Seattle, Washington, USA! Once there, find your marked vehicle and your next clue.

Greg/John (2nd)

Joel/Garrett (3rd)

So teams taxi to Dublin International Airport. Teams arrive in the following order:

1- Joel/Garrett

2- Greg/John

3- Rob/Corey

Teams are all assigned the same flight. The Amazing Yellow Line now takes all the teams from Dublin, Ireland to Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. (Toyouke: “I notice no one has bags. Did they ditch them in the airport? At least they all did.”) Teams arrive in the following order:

1- Greg/John

2- Joel/Garrett

3- Rob/Corey

Teams find their marked cars and their clue on the dashboard: a miniature of the Space Needle. Teams drive themselves to the Space Needle and valet park to get their next clue. Teams arrive in the following order:

1- Rob/Corey

2- Greg/John

3- Joel/Garrett

Teams are now instructed to make their way to the top of the Space Needle and each walk around the outside to get their next set of instructions. Since they must go one at a time, racers attempt the task in the following order:

1- Corey

2- John

3- Garrett

4- Rob

5- Greg

6- Joel

(Toyouke: “So it says one teammate at a time but why does the second teammate have to walk at all? That clue was straightforward. I feel like they should have set that up better so it's not so useless.”) Teams finish walking the Space Needle in the following order:

1- Rob/Corey

2- Greg/John

3- Joel/Garrett

Teams are now instructed to make their way on foot to Chihuly Glass and Gardens, find the man with the red and yellow tie, and take the marked path to the clue box. Teams arrive at the clue box in the following order:

1- Rob/Corey

2- Greg/John

3- Joel/Garrett

So, teams rip open their clue and find their next task, the Scramble.

SCRAMBLE:

GRUNGE / GRAB / GLASS

*Grunge: Teams drive themselves to the Showbox Theatre and choose a stage an a band. Then they become roadies by moving all the equipment, setting it up, and plugging everything into the power source. Once approved by the stage manager, he will call the band for their sound check, and the lead singer will give them their next clue.

*Grab: Teams drive themselves to Emerald City Trapeze Arts. Once there, both team members must grab a trapeze, hang from their knees and grab another artist’s hands to complete the trick. Once complete, the proctor will give them their next clue.

*Glass: Teams drive themselves to Seattle Glassblowing Studio, and watch a demonstration on how to create a glass float. Teams then work together to create one at least 4 inches in diameter. Once complete, the judge will give them their next clue.

Once teams have all three parts to the clue, they may travel to their next task, as presented on the clue.

(Toyouke: “I like the idea of a scramble but it's such a crapshoot because you don't know where you need to end up.”) Because it is hard to keep track of who goes where in what order, I’m going to tackle the Scramble task by task. I’ll also list which task this is for each team in parentheses when they arrive.

GRUNGE

Teams travel to the Showbox Theatre and arrive in the following order:

1- Joel/Garrett (2)

2- Rob/Corey (2)

3- Greg/John (2)

Teams struggle to find some of the power cords and especially the hidden amp. (Toyouke: “This checker at the Grunge challenge is kind of rude?”) But eventually, teams set up their band equipment successfully and get their clues in the following order:

1- Joel/Garrett

2- Rob/Corey

3- Greg/John

GRAB

Teams travel to Emerald City Trapeze Arts and arrive in the following order:

1- Rob/Corey (1)

2- Joel/Garrett (3)

3- Greg/John (3)

Teams struggle to perform the trick correctly, unless you’re Corey or John and a fit young guy who can get it on the first try. (Toyouke: “You gotta have core strength to swing your legs up on the trapeze, it's not that easy.“) But eventually, teams complete the trapeze trick successfully and get their clues in the following order:

1- Rob/Corey

2- Joel/Garrett

3- Greg/John

GLASS

Teams travel to Seattle Glassblowing Studio and arrive in the following order:

1- Greg/John (1) – (Toyouke: “Those boys are just failing at the worst possible time.”)

2- Joel/Garrett (1)

3- Rob/Corey (3)

Teams struggle to blow glass correctly, or even get things to be the correct size. But eventually, teams get their floats the correct size and get their clues in the following order:

1- Joel/Garrett

2- Greg/John

3- Rob/Corey

Teams are now able to assemble their clue, which is a seaplane with the address 6321 NE 175th St. Kenmore WA, which is the home of Kenmore Air Harbor. Teams finish the scramble and get their clue in the following order:

1- Joel/Garrett – (Toyouke: “Somehow the Beards are winning?!?!”)

2- Greg/John

3- Rob/Corey

Teams arrive at Kenmore Air Harbor in the following order:

1- Joel/Garrett

2- Greg/John

3- Rob/Corey

Once they arrive, teams get the final task.

FINAL TASK:

Sailing to the Finish Line

In this final task, both team members must arrange kayaks on eleven racks with red kayaks representing Roadblocks and yellow kayaks representing Detours. The kayaks must be placed on the rack for the corresponding leg (or part of leg) that they were performed on. Then, teams must assemble oars with country names and Pit Stop pictures and place them with the appropriate set of kayaks. Once correct, teams get their next clue.

Leg, Country, Pit Stop, Roadblocks, and Detours

Leg 1, Thailand: Wat Chaloem Phra Kiat Worawihan, Who wants to be above it all?, Sword Play or Spa Day.

Leg 2, Thailand: Suan Sampran, Who has a green thumb?, Stock Up or Scoop Up.

Leg 3, Vietnam: Truc Lam Phuong Nam Zen Monastery, Paper or Plastic.

Leg 3, Vietnam: Hung King Temple, Stand or Deliver, Who wants to play matchmaker?

Leg 4, India: Gatore Ki Chhatriyan, Who’s feeling balanced, All Dolled Up or The Big Picture.

Leg 5, India: Badi Chaupar, Bundels or Bricks, Who likes to play with blocks?

Leg 6, Germany: Schokoladenmuseum, Who’s ready for change?, Who’s feeling locked in?, Just for Kicks or Matter of Taste.

Leg 9, Sweden: Stromparterran, Who wants to party?, Sort or Serve.

Leg 10, Ireland: St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Who wants to get their steps in?, Who’s got the swing?

Much kayak arranging ensues. Teams complete the task in the following order:

1- Greg/John

2- Joel/Garrett – because they can’t figure out that they swapped the Leg 1 Roadblock with the Leg 7 Roadblock.

3- Rob/Corey

Teams find now that they must drive to Clise Mansion in Marymoor Park, the FINISH LINE of this racearoundtheworld. The first team to arrive will WIN the Amazing Race!

1- Greg/John

2- Joel/Garrett – (Toyouke: “Who would have thought this team could even make it to the final, let alone second?”)

3- Rob/Corey
