Previously on “Project Runway All-Stars”: There were two groups and they were told to bring the 90s back into fashion. For some reason there was a weird school theme, which is fine for someone my age who was in high school in the 90s but for people younger I'm not sure why everyone agreed on that theme. One team had more cohesion than the other, but it was pretty even. Laurence made green leather pants with some suspenders and a cone bra and she won. Kayne was eliminated, even though they liked his corset and they had nothing nice to say about Brittany. But I guess covering Liris's upper chest is unforgivable. (click for more)
I am back home! Kmanpat and I went on a week-long cruise in Alaska where we could do outdoors things and then every night a different Broadway talent gave a cabaret concert. It was AMAZING and I don't like being back in the stupid hot Midwest where I have to pay for everything.
We are all having breakfast in the Scrap Bin today? Sure. Laurence is glad to be a winner for a day at least. Fabio says he needs to go back and edit and impress everyone. Nina is bored with him.
Christian comes out in a sheer shirt and a tank top. It's very Alan Cumming as the Emcee in Cabaret. Anyway, today's challenge is more effective with visuals, which is the models in lingerie. Or at least the “lingerie as outerwear” trend. Both for men and women. Also “the jockstrap is back”. Was the jockstrap gone at some point? “Create a high-fashion look showcasing couture-like undergarments”. One day challenge, and there will be a mix of male, female, and non-binary models.
Bishme sprints into the workroom to have the chance to pick his model first. Someone asks out loud “why you running for?” like they don't know. Korto says her side of the workroom is West Coast and East Coast is noisy. She and Kara Saun are not about noise. Laurence says it's easier to work on male models because they're not curved. Hmm. Prajje says he himself doesn't want his underwear hanging out, but then the producer follow-up question shows he's probably not wearing any underwear. Fabio is doing a boxers robe? Sheer shorts? Anna interviews about how her breasts changed when she had a baby? Long nipples? I don't know.
At Mood Christian tells Laurence that for winning the last challenge she gets an extra $100. Fabio buys a sheer orange. He yells at Bishme for buying black fabric, and Bishme says “you gotta problem with black, Christian, don't say nothin'” “I gotta problem with all black fabriCK”. Heh. Kara Saun says “1921 but modern” and also the Tulsa Massacre. I mean you can make whatever statements but I am not sure why she thought of this now.
Everyone unloads their bags and has seven hours to work. Fabio has a sheer fabric with flowers appliqued onto it. Kara Saun and Korto talk about how their moms would shut down them going out with a look. Korto has to hold her tongue because her daughter now goes out in crop tops and that was her long ago. So she knows how it feels. Fabio found some old photos in the bag with the fabric he bought from home. Of his grandmother who raised him. Actually I think the sheer flowers is what he brought from home.
Christian comes in to gloat about how fast this challenge is. Fabio has a coral top with a camisole and like, some underwear with the sheer for legs. Christian says the shape isn't exciting. Maybe it's a harness that looks like a top and not an actual top. Brittany says “sexy tennis” which is good. Not a lot of comments. Rami hasn't been doing super well, and Christian encourages him. He says his work is “timeless” and not “dated”. Rami says this about himself. Anna has a narrow triangle sticking out from the corset and then she says “bleeding nipple corset” and I have paused it on Christian's look of horror and disbelief. Bishme is doing cargo pants with a lace panel. Kara Saun actually has a sketch! Prajje has made a waistband with his name on it like fancy underwear, but not much else. Bishme says he doesn't want to do pockets, and when Rami asks a followup question he has a perfect side-eye.
Model fitting. Cue everyone making thirsty comments about the men. I know, if you reversed the genders it would be gross and everyone would be mad. But then Mimi is like “I like this challenge, I like to see boy naked” and it's so...plain? Matter of fact? I don't know but I laughed. Fabio has some weird strappy harness and long sheer shorts. I feel like the shorts are too long? They're knee length. Christian nitpicks Rami's garment and then Rami mocks him in confessional. Prajje might have too much going on. He changes his mind to not make a jockstrap but just briefs. Fabio feels defeated but he also believes in his garment so it's messing with him. Everyone is under a lot of stress.
In the “Night Lounge” there is drinking and Fabio talking to Korto and Kara Saun about he doesn't know if he can finish his garment. He's emotional about it. Someone suggests he sleep on it.
In the morning Fabio looks at the photos that were in his fabric bag and he says he's a fighter and he's going to do it for them. They have four hours today which is longer than usual. Korto remakes her whole top. Anna had been wearing a sheer blouse but the sleeves are getting in the way so she is now working in a black bra which is on brand for this challenge anyway. Someone says “very tits out” and Anna adopts this as her style “titties out”. She is very confident in herself. There is really a lot of last minute working.
Nina isn't even here. What is this. Guest judges are Sergio Hudson and Paulina Porizkova. Prajje: a white corset with black boning, and a black midi skirt. Above the waistband of the skirt you can see the waistband of the underwear, with Prajje's name on them. There is also a jacket but the model just slings it over his shoulder from the start so I have no idea what's going on with it. Korto: a white cotton eyelet bralette with coral fabric straps, and a skirt made of a sheer fabric with antique-looking flowers appliqued onto it. Those big like, roses you would see on old wallpaper. The skirt is very high on her left hip and then almost to the ground on the right side. It looks like the waistband is super tight, it makes the model look like she has Barbie proportions. There's a whole back to the bralette, that looks like doilies but not in a bad way. I feel like Korto said there was going to be some kind of underwear under the skirt but you can't see if there is or not.
Bishme: first of all, it's Mimi, and Mimi has been working the shit out of everything she wears. A white halter top bra and matching panties, with a high strap on the hip. There is a “jacket” which is one of those where you just make sleeves and attach them to each other somehow. These are big leg of mutton sleeves in black with a tie around her neck. The pants are shiny black pants that have some kind of drawstring or seam just above the ankle, but then hang to the ground below that. I mean at the end of the runway Mimi takes one of the straps from the jacket and bites it as she's posing. Fabio: the top part is a very strappy harness situation in coral, which comes to a point just below the throat and then makes a diamond shape. Somehow the sheer fabric with the flowers sewn to it is laid over this, and I'm not sure how. I think it's sewn to some of the straps, but not the top of the harness, and then it just drapes. The shorts are like board shorts, loose and they hit the top of the knee. There's some underwear in there. Then a matching coral sheer kimono. I wish it was a dress and not shorts if they're going to be that long, you know? The underwear looks good from the back, but still. The model drops the kimono on the runway and then leaves it there so one of the designers has to grab it before the next model can come out.
Kara Saun: it does look like a sheer dress, all in champagne. Her model has darker skin so it's not as sad looking as it would be on a white model. There is a bodysuit under everything, and it does look like it fits pretty well, although the bottom is not high cut and they might be mad about it. The top is sheer but with feathers sewn to it, with pleated elbow length sleeves. It looks like the front of the top is cut out to showcase the bra. The skirt has godet panels that are made of the feathered fabric. There are also ribbons sewn into the skirt that look like garters which is a nice effect. Anna: first of all her model is wearing a sheer bag over his head. Then there is a black corset with some sequins here and there, but no weird pointy things (or they aren't obvious). Then a black skirt, but only attached to the corset at the front and back so there is skin at each hip. Her model is making great poses but in the end it's a corset and a plain skirt.
Brittany: the bra top has about as much coverage as a sports bra, and is a sheer white with light green accents. There's a keyhole at the center of her chest, just above the bottom band, that is outlined in the green with a little bow and some extra straps. The skirt is the same green with some high slits. It looks like there's a sheer piece up to her waist, while the skirt sits low on her hips, to give that visible underwear effect. The skirt hits just below the knee but the slits in the front are on either side of the center line so there's an unflattering loincloth effect. Rami: a black lace top that I think was supposed to be a corset. There are several gold ribbons around her waist, ending in a V so a diagonal hem. The skirt has the inverted V come up to meet it, and then the skirt is alternating stripes of the black lace and a dusty rose silk. It's just above her ankles, with a slight mullet hem. Laurence: this is basically a man in a light pink suit, with no shirt and a waist trainer. It is tailored very well but I don't know about the crotch of these pants and it's a suit. A suit with a half corset so you can still see his pecs.
Brittany, Bishme, and Anna are safe. Elaine makes a point to tell Bishme his big shoulders kept him out of the top and they hate them. Well how is he supposed to know that when he's safe all the time. Rami is in the top. The skirt is very well made, which is helping him be in the top. It's difficult fabric. I will say also that as the model walks, the skirt hangs off her hips perfectly. It's “effortless” and Elaine likes that there is no visible structure to the top (no corset or underwire) but she looks “supported”. That's because she's a model, Elaine, and she has small boobs. Fabio is in the bottom. Sigh. They hate the fabric he bought from home I think. At least they hate how he used it. They don't like the way it hangs over his stomach and hides the straps. Nina told him to turn up the volume and now it's too loud. They like the shorts (?) but there is too much else going on.
Prajje is also the top and now maybe we'll see this jacket. He's been in the top a lot. Paulina says it's gender neutral but has all the elements of gender. What. It's a corset and skirt on a man. Do things become gender neutral just because they're being worn by the opposite gender than they're intended for? Or is there more to it? The jacket is Prajje's usual patchwork of fabrics that somehow go together. Elaine straight up says he's made all this stuff before but he knows what he's good at (and they like it/him) so they don't mind. Brandon finally brings up that the model never put on the jacket and this was a problem. Kara Saun is in the top and she brings up her logic and stories and
everything. They of course love it. Whatever fabric she used has no stretch so they can't believe she only had like 12 hours. It's sexy but not vulgar.
Nothing left but bottom scores. So that means Laurence is in the bottom. The waistband of the pants is elastic like the waistband of boxer shorts. It's not bad, necessarily, but it's not great. Brandon thinks the lingerie part of it was an afterthought, and they all struggled to see how this fits the challenge. Korto immediately tells them she changed her look last minute. The draping of the skirt is interesting, but the top isn't as good. It doesn't look like it fits properly, and the whole point of this challenge is the undergarments. Korto brings up how she didn't have time, but you could have not fucked up in the first place. She's very unapologetic about how she just had a bad day and she is a good designer. Sergio has a monologue where he talks about seeing her and Kara Saun on the show and how important representation is. I'd like to point out that everyone in the bottom is representing so if you're going to use that argument to save Korto it does apply to all of them.
Brandon starts off saying Prajje had some problems. And the jacket thing. Kara Saun fit the challenge and it was beautifully made. Rami took the idea of undergarments and made something wearable. Paulina is very overly dramatic about how she HATES to do this and they ALL are amazing but maybe Fabio should go home. There were good elements but then there were too many things piled on. If only he hadn't put the stomach panel on. Also Elaine thinks if the floral fabric was pre-made, meaning you didn't spend time sewing flowers on chiffon, then where did your time go? Korto's bra was lopsided and her skirt relied on the fabric. It was uninspired. Laurence made something boring. They seem to really be trying to let her pass with her previous track record, and Elaine is all “we have to judge on today's challenge” as if they have ever done that in the history of ever.
Prajje is in. Kara Saun is the winner! Elaine is too excited. Rami is in. Kara Saun says her win is for everyone. Laurence is in. Fabio had too many ideas. Korto's look was not cohesive. Fabio is out. I don't know, y'all. I love Fabio and I think there is some “be less boring/no not like that” happening. Brittany needs to chill because she's crying the most and nothing happened to her. Brandon has to come in because Christian is gone too. So no Save I guess.
Next week: a road trip to...Christian's new store? It's a denim challenge. It'll be up soon? Today or maybe tomorrow?
