90 Day Fiance--"Rough Landings" summary s6e3

Previously on “90 Day Fiance”: Larissa arrived in Las Vegas and proceeded to harass Colt because he didn't bring her flowers. Then she complained about his car and how she doesn't want to live in Vegas because it's not like the movies. His mom is worried their relationship will change, but at the same time she gets that it needs to because that's how it works when your kids grow up. Fernanda and Jonathan made up after their first fight, and he introduced her to his friends, who were not the best but not as terrible as the previews pretended they were. They at least are acting like they want to be supportive of Jonathan. Steven had a summer fling with Olga, who is from Russia, and she got pregnant. Because his dad died when he was young, he is very determined that he be involved in his son's life, which includes taking his first plane flight ever to Russia so he can be present for his son's birth. He admitted he wouldn't be getting married if Olga wasn't pregnant. Olga currently does not have her visa, which is why he was preparing to go to Russia. Asuelu arrived in California, and did a “special dance” in the airport and Kalani was mortified. He was fascinated by the freeway, and skyscrapers, and the Airbnb they're staying in. Asuelu also really tried to bond with his son. Eric picked up Leida and her sister and son in New York, and took them to Pennsylvania so they could see some of the country before heading to Wisconsin. Leida's sister Reina is here to make sure Eric isn't a serial killer or whatever, and her parents are flying out to make sure of the same thing. Leida was clearly not happy about not having servants. Ashley flew to Jamaica to give Jay support for his final interview, and he was granted his visa. (click for more)

Ashley and Jay wander around Jamaica, and Ashley says she feels bad that Jay is leaving his family, whom he's very close with. Jay reveals that his parents are divorced, and his mom is actually in the US. His dad wasn't around, but somehow was available for advice? His dad pulls up in a taxi, and then we have to talk about how Jay's dad is a player and is apparently nicknamed Pussy Skinz. Ashley thinks Jay was like his father, but now he's not because of her. Sure. He tells his dad he's leaving, and his dad tells him not to disrespect Ashley. Basically, don't fuck it up. Jay says he respects that his dad has a lot of girlfriends, but he doesn't want to be like him. Ashley is just hoping he won't resent her if he's making the wrong decision.

Steven is on the plane to Russia. He came to Russia so he could be there when his son was born. He's also going to actually get to know Olga too. But he doesn't read Russian, and he's alone, so he's worried he'll be lost. After the flight, he's got a seven hour train ride. There's some brief drama about maybe almost getting lost, but eventually he gets on the right train. He's excited to see Olga, but also worried things will be really different.

When he finally arrives she is super thrilled to see him. He gives her a big hug, then gets down to kiss her belly, and then hug her again. Aww. She tries to say in confessional how she feels, but she's overwhelmed with emotions. They seem very happy to see each other, even though she has to ask him to slow down. Olga reveals she hasn't had a perfect childhood either, and it sounds like she grew up in an orphanage. She wants to leave that behind, so she and Steven can think about being a family in America.

Eric takes Leida, Allessandro, and Reina to Philadelphia to be tourists. Eric's nervous because Reina can be judgmental, and has “reservations” about this relationship. He then admits that her family doesn't really know that he doesn't have any money. Why didn't you tell them that? That seems like a bad move. Eric takes Alless to find some food, so Reina and Leida can talk about him. Leida asks what Reina thinks so far, and she just says “we'll see”. Leida hates that Reina is trying to get her to stay at home. Somehow Reina has the power to keep them from moving to the US? Reina also brings up the alimony payments. I guess because it's an expense that isn't going towards making Leida's life better. Leida says in confessional that Eric pays alimony and she doesn't like it. She doesn't get money from her ex for Alless so therefore Eric shouldn't do it, and it needs to stop if it's going to interfere with her life. She claims to her sister that he does it to keep his parental rights (one of his kids is still a minor) but it's not something she thinks he should be doing. Reina asks about her plan B, and Leida says she never has a plan B. It's only ever plan A. Eric returns with a cheesesteak for them. One cheesesteak. I'd be concerned but it's like a footlong so it might be enough. Leida claims not to know how to eat it which I question. It's a sandwich. Surely she's eaten a sandwich before? Also I guess she doesn't want to get her hands dirty. Reina interviews that she's surprised Leida doesn't have a plan B, but that's how she is and it's her decision. She's skeptical about her parents' reaction.

Colt takes Larissa to his house. He says she hasn't stopped complaining the whole time she's been in this country and she's been here three hours. She says in the car that she can't survive here, and he asks her to stop. She immediately says “I love you” for the first time since the show started. I'm saying, not on the phone, not when she landed, never. But now suddenly when they're fighting she decides to say it. She asks what the matter is, and he says he loves her too but he's trying to get home is all. Larissa is worried to live with Colt's mother. She's nice to Colt's mom, and honestly when she asks if Larissa likes Vegas so far, I think she's trying to be nice about it. But she has no poker face and she's a bad liar. As she looks around we can see that Colt's mom has decorated with cute snowmen and so forth, and the living room has a TV but no couch. Colt says now that she's here, she can help him pick out a sofa. I mean, did they have a couch before? Did they pull the chairs from the dining table? Colt's mom bursts into tears and says she's so happy for them. She's glad Larissa is finally here because it took forever. Well we know Larissa believes that. Colt believes they can have a good life together. He shows Larissa round the house, and she is probably not happy but she seems to be making an attempt. She hates the house because it's small, and she doesn't like the decorating. Mom asks how she likes the house, and Larissa says it's OK but they should move to a new house with a pool. A bigger house. When Colt points out it's day one, she laughs and says in three hours, she hates Vegas and wants to move to another planet, but she can't, so she'd like to move to another house. I mean, at some point, probably they could not live with Mom. But maybe wait a day or two to say so. She claims to like Colt, and she also claims that's enough. Mom says Larissa can decorate how she wants, which is why like, the living room doesn't have furniture. Larissa specifically brings up the slot machine, as an example of something she doesn't like. It gets super awkward, and I think either Larissa is showing some self-awareness or someone off-camera said something, because she asks who gave Mom the slot machine. Which of course was Colt's dad. Larissa's smile freezes, and she apologizes and says it's OK. I think she realizes she put her foot in it. Mom made beef stew for dinner, and Larissa says when she's hungry, she'll eat. Mom is unhappy, and says she doesn't have to eat it, she'll put it in the fridge. Colt brings Larissa and her things upstairs, and Mom starts crying again because it's not going well. She thought it would be easier, but Larissa clearly doesn't like anything.

Fernanda says she loves being in the US, but she hates the visa process because she can't work, so she's just home alone all the time. Today she's going to go shopping with Dani. It's hard to make her own friends because she is only 19 and can't drink, and his friends aren't fun like her own friends. She's been having drunk shenanigans and being young and his friends are slightly more mature. Dani was nice to her so she's trying to reach out. They got to a boutique and shop and have girl time. Dani wants to give her a chance to get out of the house and also she wants to get to know Fernanda. Dani tells her Jonathan hasn't really brought a lot of girls around, so this is new. Fernanda claims Jonathan knows her friends and family? Or maybe he's met them? But she's happy to talk to Dani and learn new things about Jonathan, because obviously Dani knows different things. Fernanda asks Dani if she'll tell her about Jonathan's past relationships, because she is concerned that he's 32 and hasn't had serious relationships. Dani says that he would say he wanted a family, but he would also say he didn't want to get married. Fernanda tells Dani about how when she arrived she found some woman's thong. It's weird to talk to one of his friends about this. Dani backs up Jonathan's excuse that he probably just picked up the drawer without cleaning it out. Fernanda is pretty upset about it, especially because she was so happy to get here, and then it crashed. Dani gives her a hug as Fernanda says she felt so stupid. Aww. Dani says she'd feel furious too, so it's not that Fernanda is young or stupid or anything. Fernanda wants to believe in him, but you believe the worst. Dani interviews that Jonathan is not trying to do anything, he's just an idiot. Dani promises that she would be honest with Fernanda, but Fernanda is pretty worried that if it doesn't work out with Jonathan, she has nothing. Dani is really supportive and reassuring here, and let me just note the previews cut her comments so it looked like she said “Jonathan says he doesn't want to get married.”

Asuelu is changing his son's diaper, and Kalani is showing him how to do it. She interviews that this is everything she's prayed for. Asuelu says in Samoa, the moms take care of the kids, so this is weird. He also hopes that his son will stop being cranky and smile at him. Aww. Her mom says that since Oliver was born, she's been at the condo helping out. This contradicts Kalani because I'm pretty sure she said last episode that she needs Asuelu because she hasn't been getting support. Mom says they all have high expectations for Asuelu, in terms of helping out with the baby. Kalani I think agrees with this attitude, but she says today is not the day to have him do dad things. She just wants to spend time with him and go to the beach. Plus, they're having family dinner and Asuelu isn't aware of how much her family hates him. She doesn't say it like that, she acts like he just doesn't get it. But knowing how she withheld things from her sister, I'm not sure she didn't just neglect to tell him the truth. I feel like Kalani is a little immature, with the “I expect him to be a dad, but not today. We can do that tomorrow. Also my family hates him but some of that is my lying, but I'll never say I lied, it's just that people misunderstood and I waited to clarify everything until the day before Asuelu arrived.”

Asuelu says there are a lot of white people at the beach. Yeah. Also the ocean is cold. He likes it, though. Kalani asks how he's feeling about family dinner, and Asuelu is happy to meet her family but nervous about her dad. She says Dad is scary and intimidating. Asuelu wants to have a conversation with her dad, to apologize for knocking her up. But he's learned about family and love too from this relationship. Kalani says it's going to take a minute for her family to come around, and he asks if she really thinks her family will hate him for the whole time he's here. She won't answer which is not great. Asuelu is upset because they've been doing so much work to get him here, and he really is trying to provide for her and their son. Maybe he isn't good enough, but he tries his best. Now they're both super nervous. Great.

Olga and Steven ride in a cab to her apartment, and he feels her stomach which is cute. Steven reveals he's going to be in Russia for a couple of months, so he'll be able to spend time with them. Hopefully he'll be able to bring them back with him because her visa will get approved. Also hopefully he'll learn some Russian. Olga says it's weird to actually have him physically there. They take a tour of her little apartment, and they both interview that it's going to be hard to live with each other, I guess because they're used to not having roommates. Steven has brought a pad and a cushion for the baby, and she says “That's all?” I mean he can't bring a crib. He says they'll go shopping and get more stuff. He has no idea how much this will cost. Olga says she had an appointment today, and he asks if she talked to someone about his being present for the birth. Olga tells us that in Russia, the father is not present for the birth, so Steven needs special permission. On Friday she's going to the hospital and she'll be there until she gives birth. They have two days to get stuff. Steven doesn't get it, because in the US you don't go to the hospital until you're in labor. That's not true. If there are complications you might be there early. Also I thought she explained it perfectly well, but Steven's asking her when the baby is being born as if Olga knows. Really he's upset that he planned for 9 days because that's when the due date is. Someone did not learn enough in health class. Because I would think he would know babies are not often born on the actual due date. He's brought this on himself by treating the due date like an appointment.

Larissa is in bed, under the covers, fully clothed. Colt is finally hurt that Larissa wasn't more positive or patient. OK if it took your mom being upset for you to see all the giant red flags here, then I can see why your former girlfriends told you that you needed to separate from your mom. Colt claims she's very tired and it was a long flight and she'll be fine. Being tired doesn't cause you to declare you don't want to live in that house. Mom is upset because of course Colt told her that Larissa was sweet and wonderful. Larissa is not anything she expected, and has made no effort. Also I think she's offended that Larissa doesn't want dinner, although that may be the one thing I would cut her slack on. It's possible with traveling and time changes she's not hungry, although 100% Larissa could have been more polite about refusing dinner. Colt eats while his mom cries in the kitchen, and he promises that it's OK. No, it isn't, and this is his condescending attitude again. Larissa interviews that she's been flying for 24 hours, and she's very tired, but also she doesn't think it's healthy to eat meals with Mom. It's not a healthy relationship to be “under mommy's skirt”. OK but didn't you know he lived with his mother? I mean, if they live with his mom, then they should have meals together, at least sometimes. But I support them not living with her. Colt is still claiming things will be fine, she didn't mean it, it's just a snap judgment and she will come around on the house and whatever. He tells her “different culture, different ways of thinking”. I'm not sure Brazilian culture involves being blunt when you are essentially a guest. Mom isn't having this bullshit and reminds Colt that Larissa hasn't said one nice thing about anything the whole time she's been here. Colt says he's not sure what his mom expected. I think she expected some basic politeness and for Larissa to make an effort. About the only time I saw an effort was when she realized she'd shit on an item Colt's dead father had given them. Mom finally gets pissed and says basically what I said, she wanted common courtesy. She interviews that unless Larissa changes, there won't be a future for either one of them here. Wait, does she own the house? Does Colt have his name on any paperwork? Please tell me Mom has the power to kick them both out at any time. Colt is concerned, but he has blown off his mom for this entire conversation so I'm not sure I buy his claim he's worried about both of them. No acknowledgment of how his mom is hurt, or of any of the good points she's brought up, just every time she says anything he says “It'll be fine, it's whatever”. I'd kick him out right now.

Eric and Leida go back to JFK to pick up her parents. It looks like they've spent about a week in Pennsylvania. Her parents aren't happy with her moving to the US. Eric is feeling pressure because he's broke, or at least more broke than Leida. Reina says in confessional that she doesn't think Eric is the right person for Leida and her life. He knows he has to impress them. Eric says he's met her parents before, and they don't know he's not wealthy because it just never came up. Leida admits that if her family knew that Eric was broke, they'd make her go back to Indonesia. Leida's parents and brother arrive, and Leida is very thrilled to see them. Leida's dad says Eric seems like a good guy, but he needs to work hard to get prosperity.

Fernanda's stuff is all over the floor, and she's been there for like two weeks and they don't have furniture? Like a new dresser? She asks him for an hanger and he pulls out a giant wad. They both laugh, and she starts to tell him she only needs like five, but she's speaking Spanish. Jonathan does understand Spanish, but he acts like he doesn't and she fake hits him. Heh. See this is why I feel like they have the healthiest relationship.

Fernanda Skypes her family (her brother calls her “dog face”, ha). She's very close with her siblings, because she took care of them while her mother worked. She asks her brother (who seems to be maybe 10 or 11) if he knows she was trying to say goodbye to him but he wouldn't even wake up. He says it's because he was dreaming she would stay. Oof. She misses her family a lot. They miss her a lot too. Mom is hoping she comes back with Jonathan and also a baby. They're going to get married in Chicago, but her family can't get the visas to come to the wedding. Everyone is crying and I'm gonna cry too. Mom says it's very sad but she's happy for Fernanda. Fernanda tells his mom not to worry because Jonathan's' friends are great. They say goodbye and Fernanda starts crying again. Jonathan comes in and holds her while she sobs. Aww. Jonathan says he has to do whatever it takes to take care of Fernanda so she doesn't leave.

Ashley and Jay are at the airport, and Jay is saying goodbye to everyone. He's sad to miss his niece's birth, but he's always wanted to “experience” America. They land in Baltimore, and Jay is super excited. He is in a better place. However he's already cold in the airport, and outside is colder. Oh, it's not even snowing. Jay is super dramatic about how cold it is. He quickly says he's wondering if it's a dream, because he's here. Also he can't sleep, maybe he'll just wait until it snows and then jump in it when it's deep enough. Heh. Then he mentions that he hopes her neighbors don't call the cops on him, because if you saw a black guy outside in his underpants, maybe you would call the cops. She tells him he can't be outside in his underwear, nor can he just randomly yell. I think she's not addressing the fact that all her neighbors are white. Ashley just thinks he won't get that laws are enforced in America. Ashley does eventually acknowledge that there could be some racism, and she hopes not but she also is naive to all of that so who knows. I wonder if someone prompted her with that question.

They get into her townhouse and he takes a tour. Of course, unlike Larissa, he says everything is amazing and wonderful. It's better than where he came from. We see no sign of her kids, no toys, nothing. But above her bed she has wall decals that say “Mr. & Mrs.” They shut the door and start making out. Of course. Ashley knows it will be an adjustment to live together constantly. They still do not mention her kids.

In the morning, Colt and Larissa lie in bed, with clothes, and of course now she's starving because she didn't eat yesterday. She claims she didn't think Colt's mom would be upset with her. Sure. Colt is just staring at her, and Larissa is looking anywhere but at him. One of the cats is also in the bed, and Larissa points out that if he pets the cat here, she'll always be in the bed. OK, I do have to agree with her on this. If you don't want the pets in the bed, you can't pet them when they're on the bed. Colt of course doesn't see cats in the bed as a problem. Larissa doesn't like the cat because the cat is too fat. True. Colt claims his cat isn't fat (come on dude) and that Larissa shouldn't fat shame his cat. Dude. The cat is fat.

Downstairs Larissa says she's not a great cook, but she does ask Colt what he wants for breakfast. Eggs, bacon, hash browns. Larissa then says in confessional that she's been lying to Colt about her cooking skills because men like sex and good food. So she thought if she lied he'd love her more? This is all presented with a giant grin, and I can't tell if she thinks she's hilarious, or if she's a nervous laugher. Breakfast seems to be egg sandwiches on toasted bread, and apples. She demands that Colt call his mother, because she did everything. She knows she was rude to Colt's mom yesterday, or at least she understands that's why everyone is upset with her. Colt tells her he's hungry and he's going to eat, so she can go get his mom if she wants, and she demands he do it. OK so you want to prove to his mom that you aren't a terrible person, but demanding that everyone acknowledge you made a shitty breakfast isn't the way to do it. Colt caves in and goes to get his mom, and Larissa claims she invited Mom to breakfast to please Colt. Except he didn't want to wake her, and if you really cared about what he thought, you would have respected that. Larissa is very proud she cooked. Mom thinks maybe things are better this morning. Larissa fishes for compliments and then says she made something simple. Mom says Colt doesn't eat a lot of bread, not for breakfast anyway. He usually has bacon and eggs. I mean...I don't like Larissa but this just seems like Mom asserting dominance. She'll have to learn his favorites. Colt, of course, says he doesn't see why anyone should have to eat certain things every day, or something. But you know Mom makes him bacon and eggs every morning and he's eaten them every morning, so whatever. Larissa says if he wants to be healthy, he has to eat the right way? Breakfast and lunch are different, but he has lunch at breakfast so that's not good. Huh? Wait, is Brazil one of those places where they don't have a big breakfast, just coffee and pastries? Colt then decides to argue with Larissa, that as long as you eat food that's good for you, it doesn't matter when you eat it. Larissa asks if she should eat barbecue for breakfast? I've had barbacoa for breakfast, and it was delicious. She thinks Colt is spoiled, so it will be good if they make him eat something simple. She's the wife and she wants to make changes. Sigh.

Olga and Steven lie around and talk about the baby, and Steven reiterates that he doesn't understand how babies work and he thought the due date was a solid, set in stone date you can plan your life around. Since it isn't, they need to go shopping for stuff before Olga heads to the hospital. Steven has no idea what to get, so he's going to let Olga make the list of what they need. The problem is, he is planning to pay for everything, but he spent all his money on getting here and now he's broke. Olga is still in college so she's broke too.

At the store, Steven can't read any labels or even ask anyone for help, so he's very lost. He thinks Olga has been the store and knows where everything is, but it's not like she's shopped in the baby department before. Steven is trying to keep on the list, but Olga is just picking up stuff, and maybe stuff that's not on the list. Now he's freaking out about how much it costs, but he won't say no to her. He feels like he has to pay for everything, and he asks if this is a lot of money, and she says kind of. They're going to have to learn to be parents, and hopefully they'll grow up together and learn together.

Time for Kalani and Asuelu to have family dinner. We have to have a flashback to how everyone in her family hates Asuelu except her mom. Asuelu knows Kalani's family doesn't like him, but he hopes they'll accept him. Dad and Kolini arrive, and Dad says he hopes Asuelu isn't a jackass. Kolini hasn't let go of everything completely, but she just found out a couple of days ago that Kalani had lied about Asuelu's cheating, so even if she wants to forgive him it might take more than two days. Asuelu greets them and it's super awkward until they all sit down to dinner. It's still awkward, and for some reason Kalani isn't eating but just has the baby. Asuelu tries to make some small talk, which mostly goes nowhere, and then he says he wants to apologize for not coming straight to Kalani's parents when they found out they were having a baby. He will do his best to look after his little family. Dad says if he ever disrespects Kalani they'll have issues. It feels like the usual male posturing “my daughter is dating so let me display my shotgun to scare this boy” bullshit. Dad asks his plan, and Asuelu says he didn't go to school, but he has construction experience. Dad basically says he better be a hard worker, because it's not as great here as everyone says. Uh huh. Then he asks Asuelu how he feels about getting married. Is he rushing into it? Asuelu doesn't really answer, and Dad says it's a serious question. Does he love Kalani? Asuelu says if he didn't love her, he wouldn't be here. He wants to make their new family. Dad I think is grudgingly accepting but he promises he will be watching like a hawk. Kolini is pissed now, and won't pretend not to be. She claims she's been Oliver's dad for five months, and Asuelu can't just expect to replace her immediately. See, I get what she's saying, but she's the one who refused to let him live under the same roof as her. If she had, maybe they could gradually ease the transfer of all these responsibilities. She says it's weird seeing him with the baby, and this isn't in confessional. She says this to Kalani at the dinner table in front of everyone. She claims she's doing her best to be nice, but rolling her eyes and saying “I was dad for five months” in front of his actual dad is not really nice? Kalani claims she told Asuelu that her sister has been helping her and he'd need to earn it. Kalani then points out that it's good that he's trying, and being active, which is the exact thing Kolini is bitching about. I am sure if he “respected” Kolini's “being dad”, then she'd bitch that he wasn't trying and he didn't really care about anything but a green card. Kalani says she doesn't think she can get married if they don't approve, except for the part where she's 30 years old and I'm sure she could if she really wanted to.

Next time, remembering that the previews on this show quite often end up being total bullshit: Colt's cousin asks how things are going and says he's naive, Jay confronts Natalie, Leida arrives at Eric's house and it's trashed, Kolini flat out says she hates Asuelu, to his face, Olga is in labor and Steven thinks he's going to raise hell if he can't be in the room, Jonathan dances with some random girl at the club because he's an idiot.
