TAR 32, Recap Leg 3, 10/28/20

Welcome to Leg 3! Last time, on Yields Were Better With Colin, 10 teams raced through Bogotà, Colombia. We are introduced to the new Yield, complete with hourglasses. The top five teams decide to work together, but Will and James make the number one mistake in TAR and forget to read their clue. The Nerds help the Blondies, and while Hung and Chee finish in first again, Kellie and LaVonne finish last and are eliminated. Who will be eliminated. . . next? (click for more)

Arrival at the pit stop last episode:

1st – Hung and Chee, The Honeymooning Asians

2nd – DeAngelo and Gary, Team Another Mother Brothers

3rd – Riley and Maddison, The Hawaiian Volleyball Brothers

4th – Eswar and Aparna, The Engineer Siblings

5th – Michelle and Victoria, The Cajun Asians

6th – Will and James, Team Gay Reality Stars

7th – Leo and Alana, Team Operation Nerdgasm

8th – Kaylynn and Haley, Team Blonde Real Estate

9th – Jerry and Frank, Team Family Bonding

Parque Nacional Enrique Olaya Herrera, Bogotà, Colombia

3:36 AM Hung/Chee (1st) – and apparently Chee thinks the Yield is new because he’s never seen it before. I mean, the last time we saw it was TAR11, but still.

Clue: Use the Travelocity App to book your flight to Manaus, Brazil in the heart of the Amazon! Once there, make your way to Mercado Municipal Adolpho Lisboa and find stall 13 to get your next clue. You have $258 for this leg of the race.

(Toyouke: “SEE that very much seems like a "Keep On Racing" leg.”)

3:58 AM DeAngelo/Gary (2nd)

4:22 AM Riley/Maddison (3rd)

4:29 AM Eswar/Aparna (4th)

4:34 AM Michelle/Victoria (5th)

5:11 AM Will/James (6th) – who for some reason have taken a dislike to Leo and Alana. This will be important later.

6:28 AM Leo/Alana (7th) - who thinks they have no enemies. And have learned the importance of reading the clue. (Toyouke: “You're smart but your master's degrees are completely useless and I mean that both on this race and in real life.”)

6:31 AM Kaylynn/Haley (8th) – who are thankful for Leo and Alana’s help and are going to look for a way to help them in the future.

6:33 AM Jerry/Frank (9th) – Frank laments being in the shadow of a legend, which is his father.

So teams get their tickets on the provided mobile phone through Travelocity. Teams make their way to the airport where the 6 AM Departure Alliance from Leg 2 forms (Hung/ Chee, DeAngelo/Gary, Riley/Maddison, Eswar/Aparna, and Will/James). (Toyouke: “I hate alliances. Also the lines don't make sense. They've left out both physically strong teams and smart teams, but included the volleyball players who I would assume are physically fit.”) The Amazing Orange Line then takes us from Bogotà to Manaus, and teams arrive at Eduardo Gomes International Airport in the following order:

1- Jerry/Frank

2- Kaylynn/Haley

3- Leo/Alana

4- Riley/Maddison

5- Michelle/Victoria

6- Will/James

7- Hung/Chee

8- DeAngelo/Gary

9- Eswar/Aparna

Teams now make their way to the Mercado Municipal in Manaus and find their clue at stall 13 in the following order:

1- Eswar/Aparna

2- Riley/Maddison

3- DeAngelo/Gary

4- Will/James

5- Leo/Alana

6- Hung/Chee

7- Kaylynn/Haley

8- Jerry/Frank -who somehow end up at the dock first with . . .

9- Michelle/Victoria

Teams are now given a bag and a list of eleven items to purchase, but the list is written in Portuguese. Once teams have the cassava root, hot peppers, cassava flour, juice, strainer, gloves, hammocks, tucama fruit peelings, steel machete, scarves, and pirarucu fish from the market, they bring them to the dock manager who verifies their goods, and gives them their next clue. (Toyouke: “Speaking Spanish in Brazil should be a bingo space.”) Teams get their next clue in the following order:

1- Will/James

2- Hung/Chee

3- Leo/Alana – who were missing something, I don’t even remember.

4- DeAngelo/Gary

5- Kaylynn/Haley

6- Riley/Maddison – who were missing a pair of gloves.

7- Eswar/Aparna – who were missing gloves and the cassava flour.

8- Michelle/Victoria

9- Jerry/Frank – who get the wrong machete.

Anyway, teams open their clues and have to take a boat from the dock to Dessana Village, where Pinyon will get them their next clue. The problem is that the previous clue told them to keep all the stuff they purchased with them until they are told to use it. (Toyouke: “OK the fact that they made a point to read that part of the clue means someone will fail to bring everything with them. I hate this alliance but I can't fault them for being this careful.”) So, a lot of folks had to go back and get their bags. And because no one grabbed their bags, some people had to go back to the market and get items that had gotten misplaced. (Toyouke: “And see I know how this works. I did miss the Rattlesnakes of Discontent.”) So after all that, teams finally departed for Dessana Village in the following order:

1- Riley/Maddison

2- Will/James

3- Kaylynn/Haley

4- Eswar/Aparna

5- Hung/Chee

6- Leo/Alana

7- DeAngelo/Gary

8- Michelle/Victoria

9- Jerry/Frank

Teams arrive at Dessana Village and get their clues in the following order:

1- Riley/Maddison

2- Will/James

3- Eswar/Aparna

4- Kaylynn/Haley

5- Hung/Chee

6- Leo/Alana

7- DeAngelo/Gary

8- Michelle/Victoria -who were on their boat when they realized they needed their stuff, thanks to DeAngelo and Gary. (Toyouke: “I mean you could have let the Cajun Asians get all the way to the tribe without their stuff. I wonder if you'd just be forced into one side of the Detour if that happened, or if you'd still be penalized.”)

9- Jerry/Frank -who made it to Dessana before they realized they needed their stuff.

Teams open their envelopes and we get the first (!) Detour Clue.

DETOUR:

Shelter From Trees OR Well Done Please

*Shelter From Trees: Teams must carry a bundle of babassu palm leaves and then use an example to correctly weave together a section of the roof of the chief’s house. Once completed properly, the proctor will give them their next clue.

*Well Done Please: Teams must use the ingredients from the market to prepare a meal for the chief as demonstrated by the locals. Once completed correctly, the proctor will give them their next clue.

(Toyouke: “Wait so they actually could choose the one Detour and not actually need the stuff they bought? They should have to use it. Also this will sound weird, but I am kind of glad they didn't make the women cover up and just decided to take care of that in post.”)

1- Riley/Maddison choose Shelter From Trees

2- Will/James choose Well Done Please

3- Eswar/Aparna choose Shelter From Trees – because they are engineers, but apparently working with computers is different than building a hut.

4- Kaylynn/Haley choose Well Done Please

5- Hung/Chee choose Well Done Please

6- Leo/Alana choose Well Done Please

7- DeAngelo/Gary choose Shelter From Trees

8- Michelle/Victoria choose Well Done Please

9- Jerry/Frank choose Well Done Please

(Toyouke: “You know what? This feels like an actual classic Detour choice. More physical vs. easier but complicated. Love it.”) Much cooking and shelter building ensues. So, teams complete the detour in the following order:

1- Will/James

2- Hung/Chee

3- Kaylynn/Haley

4- Riley/Maddison

5- DeAngelo/Gary

6- Leo/Alana

7- Michelle/Victoria

8- Eswar/Aparna

9- Jerry/Frank

Teams are now instructed to make their way to Malaka Beach.

CAUTION: DOUBLE U-TURN AHEAD!

When they arrive, teams find the U-Turn.

This is a Double U-Turn. Teams may choose to U-turn any team they wish (well, the team has to be behind them), but they may only use the U-Turn once during the race. If a team is U-turned, they must go back to the Detour choices and complete the Detour that they did not complete. This U-Turn is doubled, meaning two teams may U-Turn two other teams. It is revealed that this is the first of two U-Turns there will be on this race.

1- Will/James choose to U-Turn Leo/Alana

2- Hung/Chee choose not to use the U-Turn

3- Kaylynn/Haley choose to U-Turn Jerry/Frank

4- Riley/Maddison cannot U-Turn

5- DeAngelo/Gary cannot U-Turn

6- Leo/Alana are U-Turned and cannot U-Turn

7- Michelle/Victoria cannot U-Turn

8- Eswar/Aparna cannot U-Turn

9- Jerry/Frank are U-Turned and cannot U-Turn

So the Nerds and Father/Son have been U-Turned and now must complete the other U-Turn option, which for both of them is Shelter From Trees.

Teams then leave the U-Turn in the following order:

1- Will/James

2- Hung/Chee

3- Kaylynn/Haley

4- Riley/Maddison

5- DeAngelo/Gary

6- Eswar/Aparna

7- Michelle/Victoria – who search for the clue for 34 minutes, even though it is in a jar next to the U-Turn.

8- Leo/Alana

9- Jerry/Frank

Teams are now instructed to travel by riverboat to Barco Corrêa Filho, the PIT STOP of the third leg of this racearoundtheworld. The last team to arrive WILL be eliminated!

1- Will/James – who win a trip for two from Travelocity to Bali!

2- Hung/Chee

3- Kaylynn/Haley

4- Riley/Maddison

5- DeAngelo/Gary

6- Eswar/Aparna

7- Michelle/Victoria

8- Leo/Alana – who are really torn up about the U-Turn.

9- Jerry/Frank

And Jerry and Frank are the last team to arrive and are eliminated from the Race. There are tears, and Frank is very proud of his dad running around the world with two hip replacements and a bad knee. (Toyouke: ”Did I call it or did I CALL IT.”)

ORDER NOW:

1st – Will/James

2nd – Hung/Chee

3rd – Kaylynn/Haley

4th – Riley/Maddison

5th – DeAngelo/Gary

6th – Eswar/Aparna

7th – Michelle/Victoria

8th – Leo/Alana

Next week: Off to Asunción, Paraguay! Eswar snaps guitar strings! The football players have a tumble of watermelons! And the Blondes get lost! Until next time!
