TAR 32, Recap Leg 0, 10/7/20

Welcome back to the Amazing Race! It’s season number thirty-two. Which taped in 2018. We waited TWO YEARS for this. Now, to be fair, probably a wise more airing this in the middle of a pandemic, since we’re all wishing we could travel places right now, and some of us have a huge case of wanderlust. Also, it is to be noted that this is the first season in a while without a gimmick. (Toyouke: “Phil says in the intro video that we're back to letting "ordinary" people run the race. Right before he points out there are TWO teams made up of professional athletes and a team of Olympic athletes. Also the gay couple, both members have already been on reality TV.”) Oh, and I brought Toyouke along for the snark. Aren’t you lucky? (Toyouke: “Also, everyone is claiming they love trying new food when they travel so they'd better have a gross eating challenge to call them on it.”) We’ve read the bios, and watched the videos and read the bios, so let’s get to this shall we? (Toyouke: “Why are the individual team bios on Instagram? I refuse to get an Instagram account and this is obnoxious.”) The eleven teams for TAR32 are: (click for more)

Alana and Leo, The Dating Nerds. They are a dating couple from Massachusetts. Alana works for MIT and Harvard. Leo is a diabetic. I think they may be overqualified. (Toyouke: “These two feel like hipsters that want everyone to think they're smart. Maybe they are smart, but for sure they want everyone to know they're smart.”) One of Leo’s fears is losing his passport or getting bad transportation, and if they are that smart, that is probably exactly what will happen on the race. Prediction: Eighth Place.

Aparna and Eswar, The Engineer Siblings. Speaking of smart, they are siblings from California who have watched TAR from the beginning and got super excited when TAR visited their hometown of Chennai in TAR10. They have both created products for use in technology integration in the workplace. (Toyouke: “I like them, honestly. Aparna lists "preparing for my Bollywood breakout" as one of her hobbies.”) I think they really are going to be one of the smarter teams, and I’m really going to enjoy watching them. Prediction: Second Place.

Gary and DeAngelo, The NFL Teammates. They were teammates together on the Carolina Panthers, and now they are both retired from football and still friends. They have a good camaraderie between them, but I think they will be as successful as any retired professional sports players we’ve had. (Toyouke: “They admit they miss the competition of football, which I think is a good sign. If they are good-natured about losing. Also, DeAngelo describes his current job as "badass car rider line parent" which is hilarious.”) I’m getting Flight Time – Big Easy vibes, which I really enjoy. Prediction: Sixth Place.

Hung and Chee, The Honeymooning Asians. Married parents from Houston, Texas, they have never gotten their honeymoon. They both work in planning and promotion, so they seem very gung ho. Hung was also born in a refugee camp in Indonesia. But it’s important to remember that TAR is not a pleasure cruise. (Toyouke: “I would not be surprised if they have an absolutely huge fight. Stereotypical "overachieving Asians" based on what I have seen.”) They’re probably going to screw up fairly badly. Prediction: Ninth Place.

Jerry and Frank, Team Family Bonding. Father and son from Louisville, Kentucky. Dad is in the sports business, and son is a car salesman. I’m getting “dad doesn’t think son lives up to potential” vibe from them. (Toyouke: “Phil keeps talking about how they have unfinished business to work out between them but since I watch too much reality television my hunch is that they won't fight and then when they're eliminated they'll say they're proud of each other and cry.”) Truth. Prediction: Seventh Place.

Kaylynn and Haley, The Blonde Sisters. Real estate agents from South Carolina. Their bios feel like self-promotion for their real estate agency. Also, blond sisters / friends are a dime a dozen on this show, and traditionally they don’t get very far unless you have some athletic background. (Toyouke: “I already hate them on sight, "Kaylynn" is spelled in a dumb way, my opinions on teams that are two identical hot blonde women are well documented. They claim to have street smarts but I still hate them. Their bios say "I make people's real estate dreams come true" just say you sell houses UGH.”) Pretty much? Prediction: Eleventh Place.

Kellie and LaVonne, Team Olympic Hurdlers. Olympic athletes and friends from Virginia. They both seem fairly outspoken and driven to do well in their chosen professions outside of athletic competition. And I really like their energy. (Toyouke: “They seem pretty level-headed and I appreciate someone who admits they won't get involved in drama but they will for sure listen to it.”) I get a distinct Kisha and Jen vibe, and they were also strong, level headed athletes. Prediction: Winners, TAR32.

Michelle and Victoria, The Asian Sisters. Sisters from Louisiana. Is it sad that I can’t get a good read off of them? They seem as innocuous as the blondes. (Toyouke: “I hope they immediately decide Kaylynn and Haley insulted them somehow and they spend the whole race throwing shade and fighting with the blondes. Phil says they're "feisty" which bothers me. Blondes are automatically "hot" and brunettes are "feisty" and that's some stereotyping right there.“) Prediction: Tenth Place.

Nathan and Cody, The Good Ol’ Boys. Best friends from Tennessee. You know, whenever we have good southern boys (think Mark and Bopper) they always seem to have a good time and a true appreciation for whatever TAR throws at them. (Toyouke: “"Not seeing much of the world" means "never left my state before". You know it and I know it. Also, two hicks whose favorite hobby is noodling are going to be my favorites. "I think the show cast us because we're wild;” No, the show cast you in the hopes that you would have extreme culture shock.”) Truth.  Prediction: Fourth Place.

Riley and Maddison, The Hawaiian Volleyball Brothers. Brothers and Volleyball players from Honolulu, Hawaii. I already get weird vibes from this team and think they might be on my television for a while. I mean, athletic, easy-going Hawaiians is always a team that tends to stick around. (Toyouke: “I mean they certainly don't look like beach volleyball players. They do work together, which is a plus, but it also means they probably will fight with the viciousness that only siblings can muster up. They might be like the hippies, though, meaning everyone will love them but me.”) Prediction: Third Place.

Will and James, Team Gay Reality Stars. Dating gay couple, presumably from California based on the fact that they have both already been on at least one reality show each. Also, James has applied for TAR nine times, including Family Edition. (When are Billy and Carissa Gaghan going to run TAR without their parents? They are more than old enough now.) (Toyouke: “James has applied to be on this show NINE times. It's almost too many times. They are both very flamey, but the race is historically very supportive of LGBT teams.”) As usual, I’m going to either love them or hate them. Prediction: Fifth Place.

And there it is. Another crazy batch of “ordinary” contestants. Hopefully, you are able to tune in on Wednesday, October 14 at 8:00 pm CDT for the hour premiere! We’ll see you and the first recap then!
