TAR 32, Recap Leg 2, 10/21/20

Welcome to Leg 2! Last time, on The Cast of Beetlejuice Performed It Better, 11 teams started Amazing Race 32 in Los Angeles and ended up in Trinidad and Tobago! Teams had to play Swedish Fish Roulette, and we learned that teams that are often athletic are not always good musicians. But in the end, it was the Catfish Noodlers who couldn’t catch a break, and were the first team eliminated, and the first ever eliminated at a “Keep Racing” Pit Stop. Who will be eliminated. . . next? (click for more)

Arrival at the pit stop last episode:

1st – Hung and Chee, The Honeymooning Asians

2nd – Michelle and Victoria, The Cajun Asians

3rd – Riley and Maddison, The Hawaiian Volleyball Brothers

4th – Will and James, Team Gay Reality Stars

5th – Jerry and Frank, Team Family Bonding

6th – Leo and Alana, Team Operation Nerdgasm

7th – Eswar and Aparna, The Engineer Siblings

8th – Kaylynn and Haley, Team Blonde Real Estate

9th – Kellie and LaVonne, Team Olympic Hurdlers

10th – DeAngelo and Gary, Team Another Mother Brothers

Buccoo Integrated Facility, Buccoo, Tobago, Trinidad and Tobago

12:42 AM Hung/Chee (1st) – who have been together for 10 years, have three daughters, and are finally thankful for some “us” time.

Clue: Fly 1400 miles to Bogotà, Colombia! Once there, get your next clue outside the airport.

We all know how I feel about the lack of departure times, so I’m just going to leave that here.

Michelle/Victoria (2nd)

Riley/Maddison (3rd)

Will/James (4th)

Jerry/Frank (5th)

Leo/Alana (6th)

Eswar/Aparna (7th)

Kaylynn/Haley (8th)

Kellie/LaVonne (9th) – who think teams are going to underestimate them. Those are going home words, darling.

DeAngelo/Gary (10th) – who have been trained to overcome adversity! And they are here to win! So is everyone else.

So teams make their way to the airport. Teams arrive in the following order:

1- Leo/Alana

2- Jerry/Frank

3- Kellie/LaVonne

4- Hung/Chee

5- Eswar/Aparna

6- Riley/Maddison

7- Michelle/Victoria

8- Will/James

9- Kaylynn/Haley

10- DeAngelo/Gary

The Amazing Orange Line (missed you!) takes us from Trinidad and Tobago to Bogotà, and teams arrive at El Dorado International Airport and get their next clues in the following order:

1- Riley/Maddison

2- Leo/Alana

3- DeAngelo/Gary

4- Will/James

5- Hung/Chee

6- Eswar/Aparna

7- Kellie/LaVonne

8- Kaylynn/Haley

9- Michelle/Victoria

10- Jerry/Frank

Teams are now instructed to travel by taxi to Nemocón Salt Mine outside of town in Nemocón. Once there, teams must search the mines for one of ten hourglasses (5 10-minutes and 5 20-minute). The hourglass they choose will determine how much time they can yield a team for at a Yield, which is making its first appearance since TAR11. (Toyouke: “YIELD! And of course they used Colin and Christie's Yield because that is the best one.”) Once teams find an hourglass, they can then sign up for one of two departure times in the morning. (Toyouke: “Oo you have to get an hourglass before you can sign up. So there's a tradeoff. Just like how there used to be with Fast Forwards or Detours or anything else.”) Teams arrive at the mines in the following order:

1- Hung/Chee

2- Eswar/Aparna

3- DeAngelo/Gary

4- Will/James

5- Riley/Maddison

6- Leo/Alana

7- Kellie/LaVonne

8- Kaylynn/Haley

9- Michelle/Victoria

10- Jerry/Frank

Teams enter the mines and find their hourglasses in the following order:

1- Hung/Chee – 10 minutes (Toyouke: “OK so they did tell them that there are 10 minute and 20 minute hourglasses? So you know to hold out for a 20 minute one? I think they said that.”)

2- Will/James – 20 minutes

3- DeAngelo/Gary – 20 minutes

4- Riley/Maddison – 20 minutes

5- Leo/Alana – 10 minutes

6- Kellie/LaVonne – 10 minutes

7- Eswar/Aparna – 10 minutes

8- Kaylynn/Haley – 20 minutes

9- Michelle/Victoria – 20 minutes

10- Jerry/Frank – 10 minutes

Once teams have their hourglass, they sign up for departure times in the following order:

6:00 AM

1) Hung/Chee

2) Will/James

3) Riley/Maddison

4) DeAngelo/Gary

5) Eswar/Aparna

6:30 AM

1) Leo/Alana

2) Kellie/LaVonne

3) Kaylynn/Haley

4) Michelle/Victoria

5) Jerry/Frank

Teams now have a sleepover in the caves. (Toyouke: “These sleeping arrangements aren't that bad. You're inside. People used to sleep outside!” Kmanpat: “AND provide their own sleeping bags. These look provided.”) Once teams awaken, they get their next clues at their departure time in the following order:

1- Eswar/Aparna

2- Riley/Maddison

3- DeAngelo/Gary

4- Hung/Chee

5- Will/James – Will: “We decided to work with the other early teams to get to where we need to go!”

6- Leo/Alana

7- Kaylynn/Haley

8- Jerry/Frank

9- Kellie/LaVonne

10- Michelle/Victoria

Teams open their clues and we get the Detour Clue. Well, not really, but we’re going to call it that, because don’t tell me this isn’t a detour. (Toyouke: “Wait wait wait. This is a Detour. Why didn't they call it a Detour? You pick Gold or Emeralds, do different things. Seriously?”)

DETOUR”:

Gold OR Emeralds

*Gold: Teams must travel to Templo Parroquial San Francisco de Asís on foot and climb to the top of the bell tower. Once there, they choose the golden ark artifact from a basket and then take a taxi back to Bogotà and make their way to the Universidad del Rosario. Teams then find the archeology professor who will take the artifact and give them their next clue.

*Emeralds: Teams must travel to Templo Parroquial San Francisco de Asís on foot and climb to the top of the bell tower. Once there, they choose an emerald from a basket and then take a taxi back to Bogotà and make their way to the Plazoleta del Rosario. Teams then find the emerald broker who will take the emerald and give them their next clue.

1- Riley/Maddison choose Gold

2- Eswar/Aparna choose Emeralds

3- Will/James choose Emeralds

4- DeAngelo/Gary choose Emeralds

5- Hung/Chee choose Emeralds

6- Leo/Alana choose Emeralds

7- Kaylynn/Haley choose Gold

8- Jerry/Frank choose Gold

9- Kellie/LaVonne choose Gold – and then proceed to get a taxi driver who forgot to charge his cell phone.

10- Michelle/Victoria choose Gold

Much artifact and emerald delivery ensues. (Toyouke: “This is a surprising number of people who can speak Spanish, in that the number is not zero.”) So, teams complete the “detour” in the following order:

1- Riley/Maddison

2- Hung/Chee

3- DeAngelo/Gary

4- Eswar/Aparna

5- Will/James

6- Michelle/Victoria

7- Leo/Alana

8- Jerry/Frank

9- Kellie/LaVonne

10- Kaylynn/Haley

Teams are now instructed to travel by taxi to Escuela Nacional Circo Para Todos. Teams arrive in the following order:

1- DeAngelo/Gary

2- Hung/Chee

3- Riley/Maddison

4- Will/James

5- Eswar/Aparna

6- Michelle/Victoria

7- Leo/Alana

8- Jerry/Frank

9- Kaylynn/Haley

10- Kellie/LaVonne

CAUTION: YIELD AHEAD

This is the first Yield of the race. Teams may choose to yield any team they wish (well, the team has to be behind them), but they may only use the Yield once during the race. If a team is yielded, they must turn over the hourglass that the Yielders found on Leg 2 and wait for the predetermined amount of time (10 or 20 minutes) based on the hourglass.

Teams make their Yield decisions in the following order:

1- DeAngelo/Gary (20) choose to Yield no one

2- Hung/Chee (10) choose to Yield no one

3- Riley/Maddison (20) choose to Yield no one

4- Will/James (20) choose to Yield no one

5- Eswar/Aparna (10) choose to Yield no one

6- Michelle/Victoria (20) choose to Yield no one

7- Leo/Alana (10) choose to Yield no one

8- Jerry/Frank (10) choose to Yield no one

9- Kaylynn/Haley (20) choose to Yield no one – (Toyouke: “Stupid, you should have Yielded. You have no way of knowing the task inside only has so many spots so it's nearly impossible to pass anyone. But you do know there are people behind you and it's only one team and you know who it is (most likely).”)

10- Kellie/LaVonne (10) choose to Yield no one

Thus, teams move past the Yield uneventfully and get their next clues in the following order:

1- DeAngelo/Gary

2- Hung/Chee

3- Riley/Maddison

4- Will/James

5- Eswar/Aparna

6- Michelle/Victoria

7- Leo/Alana

8- Jerry/Frank

9- Kaylynn/Haley

10- Kellie/LaVonne

When they rip open the clue, teams get the second roadblock.

ROADBLOCK:

Who feels like clowning around?

In this roadblock, one team member put on makeup and a clown outfit and participate in two circus activities. They first must take a ride on the Wheel of Death, and then cross a tightrope in both directions with a wine bottle and two glasses without dropping anything. Once complete, the roadblocker can get their next clue from the ringmaster.

(Toyouke: “OK the "Wheel of Death" is just...they strap your feet in and push you. You could at least make them propel themselves. Also, I still 100% believe the bottle and glasses are attached to the tray and the tray is strapped to your hand and there is no actual danger here.”) The following teammates take the Roadblock:

1- DeAngelo – who thinks he’s done when he takes the bottle across and then gets the two glasses. DeAngelo: “I hate you now.”

2- Hung

3- Riley

4- Will – who is forced by James to take it because he is a dancer and has better balance.

5- Aparna

6- Victoria

7- Alana – who drops her bottle three times. (Toyouke: “Oh. I guess I was wrong about the bottle. So then does Alana just suck at this? Because no one else is having trouble.”) And we get the Trombone of Disappointment from the live band.

8- Frank

9- Haley

10- LaVonne

After much clowning around, teams complete the Roadblock in the following order:

1- DeAngelo/Gary

2- Hung/Chee

3- Riley/Maddison

4- Will/James

5- Eswar/Aparna

6- Michelle/Victoria

7- Jerry/Frank

8- Leo/Alana

9- Kaylynn/Haley

10- Kellie/LaVonne

Teams are now instructed to travel by taxi to Carrera 16 #10-03 and search for their next clue. Teams arrive and get their clues in the following order:

1- DeAngelo/Gary

2- Hung/Chee

3- Riley/Maddison

4- Will/James

5- Eswar/Aparna

6- Michelle/Victoria

7- Jerry/Frank

8- Leo/Alana

9- Kaylynn/Haley

10- Kellie/LaVonne

Teams are now instructed to customize a volqueta using the provided decorations and HOOK UP THE HORN (that’s important) so that it matches the provided example. And don’t worry, the Amazing Cameraman is on hand to help remind us about the horn. (Toyouke: “I missed you, Amazing Cameraperson. Also, I'm sad the Yield wasn't here at the trucks so you could Yield someone and force them to stand there and stare at you like Colin.”) Teams eventually manage to do this in the following order:

1- Hung/Chee – Hung: “I thought my height would be a disadvantage, but I was able to stand underneath the truck!”

2- DeAngelo/Gary

3- Riley/Maddison

4- Eswar/Aparna

5- Michelle/Victoria

6- Will/James – Will: “Oh yay, arts and crafts!” James: “We’ve named her Claudia.” And then the boys forget to read the clue and start whining about it. And they when they do figure it out, they are very loud about it. (Toyouke: “Good job on everyone yelling about the horn so EVERYONE KNOWS shut up so you have an advantage.”)

7- Leo/Alana – who get the horn thanks to the gay boys, but forget a set of flags. (Toyouke: “How do you miss a set of flags?”) Also, they help the Blondes with the horn on their way out. (Toyouke: “I initially thought it was unfair to catch everyone on the horn, but then the clue does specifically say to attach the horn. And I'm willing to bet everyone left just thinks the judge blows the horn to signal that you are done.”)

8- Kaylynn/Haley

9- Jerry/Frank

10- Kellie/LaVonne

Teams are now instructed to travel by taxi to Parque Nacional Enrique Olaya Herrera, the PIT STOP of the second leg of this racearoundtheworld. The last team to arrive MAY be eliminated! (Toyouke: “Don't pull this stuff with "may" Phil, don't have a "keep racing" leg with elimination followed by a non-elim. That's how people like me get suspicious of producer shenanigans.”)

1- Hung/Chee – who win a trip for two from Travelocity to Switzerland! (Toyouke: “I wonder if there were time limits on these prizes and if everyone got screwed out of them because 1. the show took so long to air and in general you don't get your prizes until the show airs and 2. can't exactly go to Switzerland at the moment.”)

2- DeAngelo/Gary – and DeAngelo does backflips with the Pit Stop Greeter.

3- Riley/Maddison

4- Eswar/Aparna

5- Michelle/Victoria

6- Will/James

7- Leo/Alana

8- Kaylynn/Haley

9- Jerry/Frank

10- Kellie/LaVonne

And Kellie and LaVonne are last to arrive and are eliminated. (Toyouke: “See, this whole leg came down to whose cab driver got them into town first. And they got a bad cab driver and they couldn't recover.”) They were upset at themselves for not reading the whole clue on the volqueta task, and Kellie laments that she’s never not made a final. But they say they are better friends, as they have hugged four times on the Race, which is more than they’ve ever hugged before!

ORDER NOW:

1st – Hung/Chee

2nd – DeAngelo/Gary

3rd – Riley/Maddison

4th – Eswar/Aparna

5th – Michelle/Victoria

6th – Will/James

7th – Leo/Alana

8th – Kaylynn/Haley

9th – Jerry/Frank

Next week: The Amazon, for the first time in TAR history! Also, the Double U-Turn is back. There’s a market! And boats! And hut building! (Toyouke: “And "crowded streets" in a "chaotic marketplace"?! So old school.”) Until next time!
