Previously
on “Project Runway All Stars”: Zac Posen showed up to ask
everyone to make a red carpet look with their “signature
technique”. Somehow they would use this to make their garments
obvious. So when the gown walks down the runway, the judges should
know it's yours. Alyssa continued to dress in an unflattering manner.
Anne had better things to do so the contestants had to critique each
other. Sure. Anthony won for sculpting a nice gown, and while Fabio
also did great, the prize was to dress someone for a Lifetime Movie
so Anthony fits that better anyway. Josh got really cocky about how
he was going to finish no problem, and then didn't finish, and
finally got sent home. (click for more)
Also
hello person who said on Reddit they always read these! And anyone
else who is here from there! Hi! Thanks for reading!
OK
so another field trip to Times Square...to Hard Rock Cafe. Sigh.
Well, at least Alyssa looks OK today. Anyway, once inside they get
their challenge. Design performance wear for a variety of genres.
Alyssa claims they've never done this before, but they totally have.
Just not on All-Stars. But they have. Anyway, to be assigned genres
come pick one from the jukebox. Anthony gets to pick first and when
the song plays he's just like “what the hell is this?” Heh.
That's “pop”. Helen gets “country” (HA) because they're just
picking numbers so it's not like she knows what she's getting,
Stanley gets “rock”, Ken gets “pop” also, Fabio gets stuck
with “country”, Edmond has “rock”. You are facing off against
the other person who has your genre. High score is up for the win,
low score is up for elimination. Winner will get to design a new Hard
Rock T-shirt and a 4 day trip to Cancun. OK a trip to Mexico is nice.
$250 and one day. Rebecca Minkoff is taking over for Anne, who I
guess is still busy and they didn't feel like making them critique
themselves.
Anthony
thinks he and Ken are equal here because neither of them know what
they're doing. I think they both have at least an idea of what
they're doing. Helen is thinking “fun and flirty”. Sure. Country
isn't country anymore, you know? Fabio has actually made stagewear so
he's pretty confident. Stanley insists he's really rock. A-line
miniskirt. Edmond designs pants. Helen finds some gunmetal sequins.
Anthony tells everyone time is up and “head to the register
accordingly”.
Back
to the workroom. Edmond reminds us he hasn't won a challenge yet.
Helen drapes her sequins to make sure they sit properly. She also
insists that she's trying not to be a mean bitch but she wants to
win. I mean, you can be a mean bitch sometimes but wanting to win
isn't why you're a mean bitch. Ken's got a jumpsuit and he says the
fit is hard to do with a thin fabric and sequins. Stanley has
sketched four pieces, and he apparently at some point told Anthony to
keep him from making more than three pieces, so Anthony yells at him
about time management. But he needs to go for it! Helen tells Ken his
crotch is too far to the left, and he's just like “yeah I got it”.
She's not threatened but there is a lot of attitude in the room. Oh
like you don't contribute.
Rebecca
shows up to do critiques. Helen explains her peasant sleeves and
Rebecca asks her how it's country and not pop. Fair. Fabio has
something sexy, and he says Helen is more classic and he is more
edgy. Maybe pare it down a little bit. Anthony has a very fitted
outfit, but the performer needs to be able to move. She tells him to
do some of the moves himself. Hee. Ken's doing cutouts and appliques
if he has time. He should do that, though, if he can get the time.
Stanley has leggings and a skirt and a top and a bunch of stuff. He
needs to decide what to ditch if he runs out of time. Edmond says
“glam rock”. Rebecca tells him to pick a lane and focus.
Stanley
is creating a textile so he's got even less time than I thought when
Anthony was yelling at him. But he doesn't want to be boring. Edmond
says he deserves to win. Model fitting. Ken fits the pants. Helen
wants her skirt to be a little below the knee so it's not as pop.
Fabio feels better about his look after seeing Helen's look. He has
some shiny gold. It's interesting. Ken and Anthony fake bitch at each
other. Anthony crows that he doesn't know how, but he made shorts in
13 minutes. “I'm so proud of these shorts I might put them
on myself they have four-way stretch. Don't act like I can't fit in
them.” I love Anthony. Ken has too much work to do. He's run out of
fabric to sew appliques on everything he wants, so it may just be
over her crotch. Helen complains about how tired she is. She's
currently lying on the floor and there's a voiceover about how hard
judging is or whatever.
You
guys, there's a commercial about Cleopatra narrated by Tim Gunn and I
have to tell you this. My online trivia league had a question where
the answer was “sturm und drang” and I missed it. Probably
because it was about the actual literary movement and not about how
Tim used the literal translation. Don't worry Kmanpat missed it too.
Runway
Day. Helen slept on her problems or whatever and she seems much more
confident. Stanley is hot gluing leather strips on other leather.
Anthony thinks any pop star will appreciate his look. Helen's got
ankle boots to make sure her look is country. Hot makeup guy Scott.
Edmond cuts some long fringe real quick and then ties it around his
model's waist. Helen and Fabio maybe didn't make anything “country”.
But what I always think of as “country” which is like, denim and
gingham, isn't actually country anymore, you know? And I'm not sure
what country is now.
You
guys, Alyssa has on black pants and a white fitted shirt with a
fringe bib. I know, I know, fringe bib, but she looks so much better
than she has been looking. Guest judge is beauty queen Olivia Culpo.
Stanley: a vest and A-line short skirt, both in leather with red,
black, and silver stripes in a chevron pattern. Under these things
are a shirt of some kind and knee-length leggings, both in a mesh. It
does look rock. Edmond: black jumpsuit with a deep V in what looks
like shiny fabric, with an asymmetrical vest in black with silver
accents. There is no back, and then the long fringe tied around her
waist. That vest looks a mess. It is kind of cool but also looks
raggedy.
Fabio:
romper and vest in a shiny pearl color. It fits really well, and then
the top is backless with a single tie, like an apron. I'm not sure
how it's country. Helen: black sequined dress with a corset and a
fuller skirt that hits below the knee. There are peasant sleeves, but
they're not attached to the corset. It moves really well and it fits
perfectly. I guess it's country?
Anthony:
earlier he said these are shorts, which is the only way I can tell
what they are. There's a deep V front and back, and fringe over her
crotch. The whole thing is sheer black with lovely blue feathery
pieces over her bodice and the skirt, and there are loose sheer black
sleeves. Ken: jumpsuit in a white sheer fabric, with opaque squiggly
lines in a vertical pattern. There's white granny panties and some
fabric over her boobs. There's also a big white coat. Those pants
look great though.
I
forgot these were supposed to be stagewear. Everyone stays out for
the judges. Stanley was inspired by Debbie Harry. Edmond's girl likes
to mix and match. Stanley's outfit is a little contrived because
everything matches too well. You know, that didn't bother me that
much. Edmond's outfit has ease and it screams “rock” to Georgina.
Isaac thinks Stanley's stripes look like a men's tie. Edmond's is
eye-catching. Olivia asks to see it without the vest, but they can't
do it because she'll flash everyone. Alyssa thinks a man could wear
it too. So what I thought was too raggedy (the vest) was exactly what
they were looking for. Obviously Edmond won the face-off.
Fabio
says “Dolly Parton/Carrie Underwood crossover”. Heh. It's stretch
denim. Helen wanted to catch the light and then play up the prairie
dress. Fabio's proportions were great but it's too on the nose? What?
Georgina. You don't make sense. She also says Helen's sequins look
cheap. The dark sequins don't catch the light as well. It looks like
a costume, while Fabio was able to stick to his aesthetic. Isaac says
that Helen's girl looks like she's going to a bar mitzvah, and
Fabio's girl is going to a pool party. Fabio won this one. They're
making it pretty obvious.
Anthony
says J. Lo. Ken wanted something long but also revealing, which is
why it's sheer. Anthony's color and sleeves are wonderful to
Georgina, but she also loves the white in Ken's and the coat looks
good all the way on instead of off the shoulder like the model walked
the runway. Isaac hates the coat. Of course. He tells Anthony the
front says “showgirl” and the back says “gym shorts”. Olivia
does mention Anthony's crotch fringe. This race is much closer, but
Ken wins. But they did have some praise for Anthony so hopefully he's
OK.
The
judges are relieved Edmond did so well this week. It moves well and
it looks expensive, which they always love. Ken went high fashion but
it also looks like an outfit she could wear on stage. They are
divided on the coat. Fabio was in the top, and the outfit is nice,
but comparatively it's not very exciting.
Georgina
immediately asks to remove Anthony from the running for elimination,
because they all liked his outfit, and everyone agrees. So it's
Stanley vs. Helen. The striped leather was too perfect and not rock.
Helen's length was terrible and it was boring. Georgina liked her
reference, but she didn't execute it properly. Maybe put a lace
blouse instead of the sleeves.
Fabio
is in. Edmond is the winner. I guess, I see their logic about the
vest. Anthony is in. Helen is out. Isaac promises it was very close
so Stanley needs to watch it. He is in. You can tell she's pissed.
She was convinced she would win this time and she seems OK with it,
but I am willing to bet it's anger and not acceptance. Also Edmond
mentioned like twice that he hadn't won yet and Helen got a bunch of
weird voiceovers so thanks for the obvious editing.
Next
time: Nina is here! And...Candy Crush. The fuck is this. Candy
Crush!?!?! UGH. Nina. Come on.

Thank you, Toyouke, for a great, detailed recap. With less contestants, it seems there are more close-ups so we can see the work put into the garments.
Glad Helen is gone, but surprised at her comments when she was packing up that she thought she was definitely the winner this time. Wonder if that confidence affected her choices and she didn't work as hard as she might have if she thought she wasn't leading?
Good to see Nina back next week.
