TAR 28 Recap Leg 2, 2-19-16

Welcome to Leg 2! Last time, on Look At Me, Ma, I’m on Television and Not Just YouTube!, 11 teams started Amazing Race 28. They raced from different airports to Mexico City, where there was mariachi and fireworks. The Roadblock caused a major shift in order, allowing the dancers Dana and Matt to come in first, and Scott and Blair to be last. But, this is the first of three non-elimination legs, and they are still in the Race! Blair then laments bringing a curling iron and a hair dryer with her and making her dad carry them. (Toyouke: “Yes, Phil, your reaction to this dumb girl's hair dryer is the correct one. “) Who will be eliminated. . . next? (click for more)

Clue: Fly to Cartagena, Colombia! Once there, take a taxi to Santa Catalina and find El Totumo.

Dana reminds us of her three and a half year engagement to Matt, which she admits she pressured him into. And apparently are going to Cartajeana. (Toyouke: “Cartagena is not hard to pronounce? Watch Romancing the Stone which is a classic movie oh my God I feel so old.”)

1:43 PM Tyler/Korey (2nd) – who are secretly athletic. I believe that.

1:57 PM Zach/Rachel (3rd) – and Zach thinks we’re going to Cuba. Oh, cute but stupid.

2:07 PM Darius/Cameron (4th) – who remind us that they are super smart, Cameron belongs to MENSA, they can solve Rubik’s Cubes, etc. I dislike this foreshadowing.

2:16 PM Brodie/Kurt (5th) – who have known each other for 10 years.

2:17 PM Burnie/Ashley (6th)

So teams make their way to the airport. Teams arrive in the following order:

5- Darius/Cameron – who get approached by a fan. (Toyouke: “Aww, that little kid was cute.”)

6- Zach/Rachel

7- Brittany/Jessica

8- Marty/Hagan

9- Sheri/Cole

10- Erin/Joslyn

11 – Scott/Blair

Once there, teams get their flights, but they have to vie for space on the available flights to Cartagena. So, teams get flights in the following order:

Flight 1, arrives Cartagena at 8:59 AM

1) Dana/Matt

2) Tyler/Korey

3) Burnie/Ashley

4) Brodie/Kurt

Flight 2, arrives Cartagena at 9:37 AM

1) Zach/Rachel

2) Brittany/Jessica

3) Sheri/Cole

4) Erin/Joslyn

5) Scott/Blair – (Toyouke: “Blair, you're in last place, why do you think you're going to get on the first flight?”)

Flight 3, arrives Cartagena at 10:00 AM

1) Marty/Hagan – who are next to Scott and Blair, and can’t book their flight fast enough. (Toyouke: “Ooo. That sucks that they basically got screwed out of the flight because their worker was slow.”)

Flight 4, arrives Cartagena at 10:30 AM

1) Darius/Cameron – because they don’t know how to book a flight, apparently. (Toyouke: “I feel like the brothers wandered the airport for at least an hour before getting tickets and I can't believe they would be that dumb?” Kmanpat: “That they did.”)

Anyway, we board, and we magically end up at Rafael Nuñez International Airport in Cartagena. Teams arrive in the following order:

1- Dana/Matt

4- Burnie/Ashley

5- Erin/Joslyn

6- Sheri/Cole

7- Zach/Rachel

8- Scott/Blair

Teams find taxis and make their way to El Totumo. Teams arrive and get their clues in the following order:

1- Brodie/Kurt

2- Dana/Matt

3- Burnie/Ashley

4- Tyler/Korey

5- Zach/Rachel

6- Scott/Blair

7- Erin/Joslyn

8- Sheri/Cole

9- Brittany/Jessica

10- Marty/Hagan – who managed to get the slowest driver alive. (Toyouke: “So...the next to last place team had a really slow cab and that allowed the last place team to catch up so it would actually be a race for last. And the cabs were pre-screened and provided for teams. I see. I mean the challenge itself can't be influenced by production that much. But you can manipulate things so your last two teams are at the challenge at the same time instead of being half an hour apart.”)

11 – Darius/Cameron

Once they arrive, teams get the second roadblock clue.

ROADBLOCK:

Who is a hot mess?

In this roadblock, one team member must don a swimsuit and submerge themselves in El Totumo, which is filled with therapeutic mud, and find a satchel containing an emerald, amongst some without emeralds. Once an attendant has approved the jewel, teams wander through a lake to get their next clue.

(Toyouke: “SEE EMERALDS LIKE IN THE MOVIE literally this is all I know about Cartagena and I'm glad to see the movie was semi-accurate. And I love that they put the cluebox out in the middle of the water so you would have to clean yourself off before getting back in a cab. Otherwise you know people would be trying to save time getting in cabs while still covered in mud.”)

The following teammates take the Roadblock:

2- Dana – who pulls out a pink gem first. (Toyouke: “Girl emeralds are green. Come on.” Kmanpat: “Um, EVERYONE has seen The Wizard of Oz. I think you know what color an emerald is.”)
3- Ashley

4- Korey – who drops his and has to go back for another.

5- Rachel

6- Blair – who borrows a suit. (Toyouke: “Why do you not have a bathing suit.”)

7- Joslyn

8- Cole

9- Jessica

11- Cameron

After much putting on swimsuits and getting dirty in the mud and finding emeralds, teams complete the Roadblock in the following order:

1- Brodie/Kurt

2- Burnie/Ashley

5- Erin/Joslyn

6- Sheri/Cole

7- Zach/Rachel

8- Scott/Blair

9- Brittany/Jessica

11 – Marty/Hagan

Teams are now instructed to make their way to Manzanillo del Mar and find Terraza Mello Faradula in order to search for their next clue. Teams arrive and find their clues in the following order:

1- Brodie/Kurt

2- Burnie/Ashley

3- Dana/Matt

4- Tyler/Korey

5- Erin/Joslyn

6- Sheri/Cole

7- Zach/Rachel

8- Scott/Blair

9- Brittany/Jessica

10- Darius/Cameron – after passing it completely when they didn’t find a clue box and end up at the Playa. (Toyouke: “OK that's two dumb mistakes in one leg and I like you guys but seriously.”)

11 – Marty/Hagan – who leave their taxi at the Terraza.

Teams open their clues, and Scott and Blair find their Speed Bump.

SPEED BUMP:

A Speed Bump is a task that must be performed by the last place team on a non-elimination leg when the non-elimination leg is not immediately followed by the next leg. Once they complete this task, they may return to the place where the Speed Bump occurred and continue the leg. In this speed bump, the team must travel to Playa del Ora and help local fishermen pull in their nets and harvest the day’s catch in order to continue to the Detour.

Teams complete the Speed Bump in the following order:

1- Scott/Blair

After much fish harvesting, they continue with the rest of the teams.

And we get the Detour Clue.

DETOUR:

Pop-Up OR Parrilla

*Pop-Up: Teams must travel to Playa del Ora and build a car shelter using the provided wood and tarp. Once the shelter was approved, a local would pull their car into the shelter and give the teams their next clue.

*Parrilla: Teams travel to Playa del Ora and prepare three fish dinners on a parrilla grill. Once the chef approved the dishes, teams deliver them to the locals who give the teams their next clue.

1- Brodie/Kurt choose Pop-Up – and don’t tie their beams correctly or dig far enough into the sand.

2- Dana/Matt choose Pop-Up – and have all their beams facing the wrong direction.

3- Burnie/Ashley choose Pop-Up

4- Tyler/Korey choose Pop-Up

5- Zach/Rachel choose Pop-Up – and start building their shelter in a random location. #readtheclue

6- Sheri/Cole choose Pop-Up

7- Erin/Joslyn choose Parrilla – and Erin tells us she doesn’t eat fish because she got one in her bathing suit once. (Toyouke: “This "traumatic" story is ridiculous.”)

8- Brittany/Jessica choose Parrilla

9- Scott/Blair choose Parrilla

10- Darius/Cameron choose Parrilla

11- Marty/Hagan choose Parrilla

Much shelter building and fish frying ensues. So, teams complete the detour in the following order:

1- Tyler/Korey

2- Brodie/Kurt

5- Brittany/Jessica

6- Erin/Joslyn

7- Zach/Rachel

8- Sheri/Cole

9- Scott/Blair

Teams find now that they must travel to Plaza Bolivar back in Cartagena, the PIT STOP of the second leg of this racearoundtheworld. The last team to arrive WILL be eliminated!

1- Tyler/Korey – who win a trip for two from Travelocity to Saint Thomas.

2- Brodie/Kurt

3- Burnie/Ashley – who kiss at the mat. Phil, to Brodie and Kurt, “How come you guys didn’t do that?”

4- Dana/Matt

5- Erin/Joslyn

6- Zach/Rachel

7- Brittany/Jessica

8- Sheri/Cole

9- Scott/Blair

10- Darius/Cameron

11- Marty/Hagan - who have to run back to the Terraza on foot to get their cab while the brothers drive on by.

And Marty and Hagan are eliminated. (Toyouke: “That mistake killed them, but the brothers made two mistakes? I guess I would have understood either one going home. However the sketchy slow cab is not their fault and I don't like it.”) Hagan says she was invested, and would have kept going. Marty thinks this is one of the last adventures she gets to share with her daughter.
