TAR24, Recap Leg 9, 4/27/14

Welcome to Leg 9! Last time, on You Don’t U-Turn The Old Guy!, teams continued racing through Italy.  Brendon and Rachel used the U-Turn against Dave and Connor, who then U-Turned the Afghanimals but helped them survive.  Brendon and Rachel managed to win the leg, and Flight Time and Big Easy had their time run out on them again.  Who will be eliminated. . . next?

Arrival at the pit stop last episode:
1st – Brendon/Rachel, Team Brenchel
2nd – Jet/Cord, The Cowboys
3rd – Leo/Jamal, The Afghanimals
4th – Dave/Connor, Team LIVESTRONG
5th – Caroline/Jennifer, The Country Singers

Piazza del Duomo, Orvieto, Italy

6:13 AM Brendon/Rachel (1st)
Clue: Drive to Rome and take a train 400 miles to Chiasso, Switzerland!  Once there, find a marked Ford Focus and drive to Altdorf, the hometown of William Tell and wait for him to gie you your next clue at his monument.

7:23 AM Jet/Cord (2nd)
7:34 AM Leo/Jamal (3rd)
7:44 AM Dave/Connor (4th)
7:45 AM Caroline/Jennifer (5th) – who are shocked that anyone would U-Turn Dave and Connor.  (Toyouke: “You U-Turn Dave and Connor because otherwise they'll kick your ass because they're good. They're certainly free to be insulted but that is kind of getting annoying.”)

Teams drive themselves to Rome and arrive at the train station in the following order:

1- Brendon/Rachel
2- Dave/Connor
3- Caroline/Jennifer
4- Leo/Jamal
5- Jet/Cord – who get lost en route to Rome.

Teams arrive at the train station, and the first four teams make it on the first train to Chiasso.  (Toyouke: “Artificial bunching. Woo.”)  They proceed to make fun of Brenchel.  (Toyouke: “Mocking Rachel is always welcome.”)  Jet and Cord make it on the second train.

Teams arrive in Chiasso and get their cars in the following order:

1- Dave/Connor
2- Leo/Jamal
3- Caroline/Jennifer
4- Brendon/Rachel
5- Jet/Cord

The teams now make their way to Altdorf and arrive at the William Tell Monument in the following order:

1- Leo/Jamal
2- Caroline/Jennifer
3- Dave/Connor
4- Brendon/Rachel
5- Jet/Cord

(Toyouke: “Why...is there a parade?”)  Once there, teams find that William won’t be there until the morning.  And once he arrives with his son, the teams get their clues in the following order:

1- Caroline/Jennifer
2- Leo/Jamal
3- Dave/Connor
4- Brendon/Rachel
5- Jet/Cord

Teams are now instructed to drive themselves to Lucerne and find the oldest wooden bridge in Europe, Chapel Bridge, and get their next clue.  They arrive in the following order:

1- Dave/Connor
2- Leo/Jamal
3- Caroline/Jennifer
4- Jet/Cord
5- Brendon/Rachel – who went to Spreurer Bridge first.

Teams are now instructed to travel to the Schweizerhof Hotel to get their next clue.  Teams arrive in the following order:

1- Dave/Connor
2- Leo/Jamal
3- Caroline/Jennifer
4- Jet/Cord
5- Brendon/Rachel

Once there, teams must clean up a trashed room to Swiss standards by donning maid outfits, picking up a cleaning basket, and recreate the perfect room.  Once perfect, Helga, the head housekeeper, will give them their next clue.

Teams complete the rooms in the following order:

1- Jet/Cord – Jet: "We've never trashed a hotel room that anyone knows about.”
2- Leo/Jamal
3- Dave/Connor
4- Caroline/Jennifer
5- Brendon/Rachel

Teams are now instructed to drive themselves to the Swiss Museum of Transport to find the marked artifact and answer a question about it.  Teams arrive in the following order:

1- Jet/Cord
2- Leo/Jamal
3- Dave/Connor
4- Caroline/Jennifer
5- Brendon/Rachel

Teams must answer “What was this used for?”, which was digging a tunnel.  Teams get the correct answer in the following order:

1- Jet/Cord – who recognize it immediately.
2- Dave/Connor – who also recognize it immediately.
3- Leo/Jamal
4- Caroline/Jennifer
5- Brendon/Rachel

Teams are now instructed to go to the Ford Mustang Exhibit to get their next clue.

Teams arrive in the following order:

1- Jet/Cord
2- Dave/Connor
3- Leo/Jamal
4- Caroline/Jennifer
5- Brendon/Rachel

Teams are now instructed to pick a Ford Mustang and use the posted road signs to solve a moth problem on the clue to determine the year of their Ford Mustang.  (Toyouke: “That was tricky with the signs being on the side of the building. It makes me think of that one challenge where they had to find the key for the language and it was on the side of the building and everyone missed it but one team.”)  Once they have the correct year, the President of the Swiss Mustang Club will give them their next clue.

Teams figure out their model years in the following order:

1- Jet/Cord
2- Dave/Connor
3- Leo/Jamal
4- Caroline/Jennifer
5- Brendon/Rachel

Teams are now instructed to drive to Oberrickenbach and search for the milk tanker for their next clue.  Teams arrive and get their clue in the following order:

1- Jet/Cord
2- Dave/Connor
3- Leo/Jamal
4- Brendon/Rachel
5- Caroline/Jennifer

And teams get the ninth roadblock clue.

ROADBLOCK:

Make a milk pick-up – Swiss Style!

In this roadblock, roadblockers must choose a Bernese Mountain dog and a cart.  They transpost to empty milk canisters to a gondola, travel to the top of the mountain and walk to a milk farm, exchange them for two full canisters, and return to the ground.  Once the dogs deliver the milk, they can get their next clue.

The following teammates take the Roadblock:

1- Cord
2- Connor – who notices a message from Brendon in the gondola.  "Season winners, Brenchel, ERASE"
3- Leo
4- Brendon
5- Caroline – and she slips and falls.  (Toyouke: “That cameraguy is mad he didn't get a shot of the blonde falling down.”)

After much milk jug carrying, teams complete the Roadblock in the following order:

1- Jet/Cord
2- Dave/Connor
3- Leo/Jamal
4- Brendon/Rachel
5- Caroline/Jennifer

Teams find now that they must drive themselves to Engelberg and take the gondola to the top of Mount Titlis, the PIT STOP of the ninth leg of this racearoundtheworld.  The last team to arrive MAY be eliminated!

1- Dave/Connor – who each win a 2015 Ford Mustang.
2- Jet/Cord
3- Leo/Jamal
4- Brendon/Rachel
5- Caroline/Jennifer

And the country singers find out that this is the third predetermined non-elimination leg, and that they are still in the race!

ORDER NOW:
1st – Dave/Connor
2nd – Jet/Cord
3rd – Leo/Jamal
4th – Brendon/Rachel
5th – Caroline/Jennifer

Next week: Teams head to Spain and fight each other using giant inflatable bull heads.  And there is balloon shaving, which I think is a Barber of Seville reference.  And another Double U-Turn!  Until next time!
