TAR24, Recap Leg 7, 4/13/14

Welcome to Leg 7! Last time, on Tuk-Tuk-A-Palooza, teams continued to race through Sri Lanks.  Rachel failed at a Roadblock.  The Afghanimals and the Cowboys battled for first place in a footrace to the mat.  And Caroline and Jennifer found themselves in last place on the second non-elimination leg of the race.  Who will be eliminated. . . next? (click for more)

Arrival at the pit stop last episode:
1st – Leo/Jamal, The Afghanimals
2nd – Jet/Cord, The Cowboys
3rd – Jessica/John, Cocky YDC

Colombo Rowing Club, Colombo, Sri Lanka

2:41 PM Leo/Jamal (1st)
Clue: Fly to the Eternal City: Rome, Italy!  Once there, find the Ponte Sant’Angelo, or Hadrian’s Bridge.

2:42 PM Jet/Cord (2nd)
3:01 PM Jessica/John (3rd)
3:02 PM Dave/Connor (4th)
3:05 PM Brendon/Rachel (5th) – (Toyouke: “The Eternal City = "Ethiopian, Africa!" Jesus Christ Rachel.”)
3:09 PM Flight Time/Big Easy (6th)
3:26 PM Caroline/Jennifer (7th)

Teams made their way to the travel agent in the following order:

1- Leo/Jamal
2- Jet/Cord
3- Jessica/John
4- Dave/Connor
5- Brendon/Rachel
6- Flight Time/Big Easy
7- Caroline/Jennifer

Once there, teams discover that the only flight to Rome is a Sri Lankan Airlines flight at 1:20 AM direct to Rome, arriving at 7:50 AM.  So, all the teams make their way to the airport, and take the Amazing Red Line to Rome.  Teams arrive in the following order:

1- Jessica/John – who benefit from sitting the front of the plane, as do. . .
2- Brandon/Rachel – and. . .
3- Leo/Jamal – and . . .
4- Caroline/Jennifer – who are the last team on the first bus to the terminal.
5- Flight Time/ Big Easy
6- Dave/Connor
7- Jet/Cord

Teams now make their way to Hadrian’s Bridge.

When they arrive, we find that Caroline and Jennifer have their Speed Bump.

SPEED BUMP:

A Speed Bump is a task that must be performed by the last place team on a non-elimination leg. Once they complete this task, they may return to the place where the Speed Bump occurred and continue the leg. In this speed bump, teams must travel to the Pantheon and pick up a Olivetti typewriter. They must then carry it to the building it resembled, the Altare della Patria.  Once they place the typewriter on a pedestal, they may continue racing.

(Toyouke: “This is the most insane Speed Bump! You actually have to figure things out? Wow.”)

Teams complete the Speed Bump in the following order:

1- Caroline/Jennifer

After much typewriter carrying, they continue with the rest of the teams in getting the next clue in the following order:

1- Jessica/John
2- Brandon/Rachel
3- Leo/Jamal
4- Flight Time/ Big Easy
5- Dave/Connor
6- Jet/Cord
7- Caroline/Jennifer

And we get the Detour Clue.

DETOUR:
Gladiator OR Charioteer
*Gladiator: Teams must get into ancient Roman costumes and learn a swordfighting routine which must be performed correctly by both team members.  Once the emperor approves of both fights, teams  get their next clue.
*Charioteer: Teams get into ancient Roman costumes and race a remote controlled chariot around a track five times while one person controls speed and the other controls turns in 1:30 or less.  Once complete, teams get their next clue.

1- Jessica/John choose Gladiator – John: "I've done martial arts."  (Toyouke: “Oh, please, You are learning a series of moves, not actual swordfighting. You are basically learning dance steps.”)
2- Brendon/Rachel choose Charioteer
3- Leo/Jamal choose Charioteer – but realize that as teams arrive, the track gets crowded, so they Bald Snark to Gladiator.
4- Dave/Connor choose Charioteer
5- Flight Time/Big Easy choose Charioteer
6- Jet/Cord choose Charioteer
7- Caroline/Jennifer choose Charioteer

Teams complete the detour in the following order:

1- Jessica/John
2- Brendon/Rachel
3- Jet/Cord
4- Dave/Connor
5- Flight Time/Big Easy
6- Caroline/Jennifer
7- Leo/Jamal

Teams are now instructed to travel to the “piazza of John Keats’ unhappy Roman Holiday”, which is the Piazza di Spagna, more famously known as the Spanish Steps, where he died, to get their next clue.  Teams get their clues in the following order:

1- Brendon/Rachel
2- Dave/Connor
3- Caroline/Jennifer
4- Jet/Cord
5- Flight Time/Big Easy – who accidently go to the Via John Keats.
6- Leo/Jamal – who accidently go to the Via John Keats.
7- Jessica/John – who accidently go to the Via John Keats.

And teams get the seventh roadblock clue.

ROADBLOCK:

Who can sum up the Spanish Steps?

In this roadblock, roadblockers must pick up a postcard from the chestnut vendor,  walk the Spanish Steps and count them (135), find the obelisk at the top and note its year of construction (1789) and then add the two numbers and convert the answer to Roman numerals (MCMXXIV).  They then deliver the postcard to the Roman Holiday scooter couple to get their next clue.

The following teammates take the Roadblock:

1- Brandon
2- Dave
3- Jennifer
4- Jet
5- Flight Time
6- Jamal
7- John

After much stair climbing and obelisk reading, teams complete the Roadblock in the following order:

1- Brendon/Rachel
2- Caroline/Jennifer
3- Dave/Connor
4- Jet/Cord
5- Leo/Jamal – who decide to give their info to the last two teams and let them battle it out.
6- Flight Time/Big Easy
7- Jessica/John

Teams find now that they must travel on foot to the Piazza del Popolo, the PIT STOP of the seventh leg of this racearoundtheworld.  The last team to arrive MAY be eliminated!

1- Brandon/Rachel – who win a trip for two to the Great Barrier Reef in Australia.
2- Caroline/Jennifer
3- Dave/Connor
4- Jet/Cord – who still have their Express Pass that they must use next leg.
5- Leo/Jamal
6- Flight Time/Big Easy
7- Jessica/John

And Jessica and John lose the foot race to the mat and are eliminated.

ORDER NOW:
1st – Brandon/Rachel
2nd – Caroline/Jennifer
3rd – Dave/Connor
4th – Jet/Cord
5th – Leo/Jamal
6th – Flight Time/Big Easy

Next week: More Italy.  There is a double U-Turn, donkeys and apparently dirty tricks.  Until next time!
