TAR19, Recap Leg 2, 10/2/11

Welcome to Leg 2! Last time, on Taipei a Yellow Ribbon Round the Old Oak Tree, teams raced from Los Angeles to Taipei, Taiwan. Justin and Jennifer, the siblings, faced off in the first of many confrontations, Cindy is determined, and Ernie and Cindy get the Express Pass. The grandparents were the last to check in, only to find that they were not eliminated, and everyone was still racing! AND, in a new (unnecessary) twist, the next leg will be a double elimination. Who will be eliminated. . . next? (click for more)

Clue: Fly 2400 miles to Jakarta, Indonesia! Once there, take an overnight train to Yogyakarta, Indonesia, and race by taxi to Goa Jomblang Cave. It is there you’ll find your next clue.

9:39 PM Justin/Jennifer (3rd) – who call ahead to the airport.
10:07 PM Ethan/Jennifer (4th)
10:15 PM Amani/Marcus (5th)
10:22 PM Laurence/Zac (6th) – and Laurence makes no effort to pronounce the Indonesia destination. (Auburnium0513: “Wow, that was some great pronouncing there..."yakayakayaka" uh-huh”)
10: 23 PM Andy/Tommy (7th) – Tommy: “Don’t ‘dude’ me, dude.”
10:48 PM Ron/Bill (8th) – who are testing their thirteen year relationship.

Teams arrive at the airport for flights in the following order:

Apparently, the eat, sleep and mingle that the teams are used to having didn’t happen this last leg, as no one knows if it was an elimination or not. (Toyouke: “Did they tell everyone to be surprised at the double elimination? Did the old people not tell anyone? Whatever happened to "eat, sleep, and mingle"?”) Of, course that’s possibly explainable by the 6 and a half hour difference between the first and last teams. (Toyouke: “. Yeah...how do you not see them at the hotel? How do you not see everyone? Mingle! I know that's a big gap, but still. It's good to see everyone so happy to see Bill and Cathi.”) Anyway, Ernie and Cindy find that the only flight option is on China Air at 8:45 am, so all teams make the flight.

Once teams arrive in Jakarta, all teams make their way to the train station, where the teams find that the only train to Yogyakarta is at 5:30 pm, and that everyone is taking it. Well, everyone except Justin and Jennifer, who finally decide to take it (Which is especially good, since you were told to by the original clue). (Toyouke: “I'm already done with this argument, and it's been about 15 seconds.”) Teams take the train and arrive in the following order:

Teams are now instructed to take a taxi to Goa Jomblang. (Toyouke: “I know bunching is stupid. But I can see the advantage of having everyone start out in the same place when they get to the city, so your elimination is because of your failing at tasks and not because of missing a train or something.” Auburnium0513: “The long line of cabs is entertaining.”) They arrive in the following order:

1- Bill/Cathi
2- Ernie/Cindy
3- Liz/Marie
4- Amani/Marcus
5- Jeremy/Sandy
6- Andy/Tommy
7- Justin/Jennifer
8- Ethan/Jenna
9- Kaylani/Lisa

However, once they arrive, Bill and Cathi find the Speed Bump.

SPEED BUMP:

A speed bump is a task that must be performed by the last place team on a non-elimination leg. Once they complete this task, they may return to the place where the speed bump occurred and continue the leg. In this speed bump, teams must untangle a knotted rope until they find a carabineer and attach it to a post in order to receive their next clue.

(Toyouke: “Untangle a rope, huh. That might be the most task-like Speed Bump I've seen.”)

Teams complete the Speed Bump in the following order:

1- Bill/Cathi

After much knot untying, they continue with the rest of the teams in getting the clue.

And once they arrive, teams get the second roadblock clue.

ROADBLOCK:

Who’s ready to spelunk?

In this roadblock, one team member must spelunk into the cave 160 feet into the earth and finda Javanese mask and a dagger. Once they have the items, they must climb a bamboo ladder and deliver the items to a proctor who will give them their next clue.

The following teammates take the Roadblock:

After much spelunking, teams complete the Roadblock in the following order:

And we get the Detour Clue.

DETOUR:
Shake Your Money Maker OR Be a Ticket Taker
*Shake Your Money Maker: Teams must travel to a busy intersection where one person must learn a dance while the second must play a drum in order to earn 30000 rupiah. Once complete, teams must make their way to Asiyiyah Orphanage and deliver the money to get their next clue..
*Be a Ticket Taker: Teams must travel to Mal Malioboro and park motorbikes in order to earn 15000 rupiah. Once complete, teams must make their way to Asiyiyah Orphanage and deliver ALL their money to get their next clue.

(Toyouke: “Mugged? Already? It's early. And they made it sound like you might not see the paper and not get your clue.”)

2- Bill/Cathi choose Be a Ticket Taker
3- Ernie/Cindy choose Be a Ticket Taker
4- Jeremy/Sandy choose Shake Your Money Maker
5- Amani/Marcus choose Shake Your Money Maker
6- Andy/Tommy choose Be a Ticket Taker
7- Justin/Jennifer choose Be a Ticket Taker
8- Ethan/Jenna choose Shake Your Money Maker

Teams complete the detour in the following order:

8- Ethan/Jenna – who proceed to leave their clue at the Detour. (Toyouke: “See? This isn't Survivor. You have to keep track of things.”)

Teams then arrive at Asiyiyah Orphanage in the following order:

1- Ernie/Cindy
2- Bill/Cathi
3- Liz/Marie
4- Andy/Tommy – (Toyouke: “Are the snowboarders going to be the only ones to see the sign? How does that not surprise me somehow?”)
5- Justin/Jennifer
6- Jeremy/Sandy
7- Amani/Marcus
8- Laurence/Zac
9- Kaylani/Lisa
10- Ethan/Jenna
11- Ron/Bill

When they arrive, teams give all their Detour money to the orphanage and receive the coat of arms for the Yogyakarta Sultanate and have to find the Kraton Place, home of the sultan, and the PIT STOP. Teams depart the orphanage and arrive at the mat in the following order:

1- Ernie/Cindy
2- Liz/Marie
3- Bill/Cathi
4- Andy/Tommy
5- Jeremy/Sandy
6- Justin/Jennifer
7- Amani/Marcus
8- Laurence/Zac
9- Ethan/Jenna
10- Kaylani/Lisa
11- Ron/Bill

Teams arrive at the mat, but most of them find that they have screwed up and have not READ THE SIGN at the orphanage that asks them to surrender all their money (not just the Detour money) before checking in. (Toyouke: “Phil, you are being evil with the check-ins today. Did you get tired of telling people to go back to the orphanage?”) So once that is taken care of, they must walk back to Kraton Palace, the PIT STOP of the second leg of this racearoundtheworld. The last two teams to arrive WILL be eliminated!

1- Andy/Tommy – who win a trip for 2 to Ireland. (Auburnium0513: “Yes, send the hippie stoners to the land of beer and whiskey.”)

And with that, we lose both Ethan and Jenna and Ron and Bill in one fell swoop. (Toyouke: “They didn't last any longer than those failure Big Brother teams? GOOD. P.S. you should propose, dork.”) I don’t think the double elimination is necessary. . .
