Previously on “Project Runway”: Joan was eliminated, which is fine because people are going to see her tailoring and she'll have jobs. The challenge was to make western outfits, which is fine. It's not exciting but at this point we're just trying to get to the end. The twins basically made the same outfit: a miniskirt, bandeau top, and jacket, in white leather. Jesus won but I wonder if it's basically because Antonio is the only one who hasn't won a challenge so it will drive him insane. Veejay made a bodycon dress with red transparent vinyl fringe, and Yuchen made a silver sequined gown with matching horns right on her boobs. So that's the two bottom looks. (click for more)
Either of these looks could go home, but Yuchen is sent home. Veejay is in, presumably so she can keep fighting with the twins. The judges are sad to see him go, which is whatever, they always say that. He interviews that he's lost some confidence, but he'll never give up. Veejay loses it and then like, Jesus goes to hug her because he's two-faced. “I'm not going to kick her while she's down but I still want her to go home.” Then don't give her advice like you give a shit.
As they reveal the challenge to the five left, the chyron labels it “Challenge 8 Reveal Day”. I don't hate reminding us how much time is left but I feel like they're doing it in the most confusing way possible. Just say “Challenge 8” or something. Heidi says something about feeling confident, and then says they have “muses” which means it's the “real women” challenge. Oh and two guys. Supposedly the fashion world tries to make everyone comfortable, all body types, gender identities, and I guess fabric sensitivities. I feel like there was a client challenge and someone had to frantically last minute make something new because the client was allergic to the fabric? And it was presented as the giant pain in the ass that it was and not like, a chance to be inclusive? Anyway the challenge is to make outfits for people with eczema. Why eczema? I guess it's sponsored by Lilly, so basically a drug company paid them to feature people with eczema. But if you are trying to sell your eczema drugs, then shouldn't they not have problems with fabric which defeats the whole “twist” of this challenge? Whatever, it's a one day challenge and the outfit has to be for “a night out on the town” AND have a reveal. AND be comfortable. “Random” selection. Jesus and Veejay get the two boys, Jesus immediately being thirsty about it.
Cue everyone talking about eczema and making clients happy. You know they don't give a shit about the clients. Jesus's client is hot to be fair. Jesus promises to line everything in silk so it's comfortable, and then describes wide legged pants and a jacket and an open shirt. His client says it's a little effeminate, which is somehow offensive to Jesus. I mean it kind of is? Jarrad I think is trying not to be difficult but he's not keen on wearing flowy pants either. Jesus promises it will be amazing. Then Jesus is sitting on the work table and Jarred is in front of him with his hands on Jesus's thighs so that's where this interaction is headed. There is a shot of the two of them framed in the support for a dressform. You know the black metal pole and the hook part on top? The two of them are completely out of focus and Jarrad says something in Spanish and immediate smash cut to Antonio looking over, and then turning back around trying to act like he doesn't care. Antonio interviews that Jesus needs to focus, and the chyron says “**** blocker” like they will say “shit” but not “cock”.
The rest of the room is having normal conversations. Ethan's client wants him to make her something so amazing that she won't care about her skin, if the outbreaks are showing and it doesn't look great, etc. I've had eczema and it does look red and rough but luckily I didn't have problems with fabrics. But I did have a patch on my neck that looked like a hickey if it was flaring up so I get it. Ethan loves a reveal but he also can't do a super draggy thing. His client does want to show leg which I think he can handle. I mean we knew Ethan would be fine with “a night out look with a reveal”. Belania's client wants to wear nude shades but no prints. No sequins. Belania is dying. What reveal can you do if she doesn't want any colors or sparkle? Belania might be the “I did exactly what my client wanted and because they are too boring I'm going to get yelled at for not insisting on my style” person.
Antonio is of course telling his client he hasn't won. He also got a client that speaks Spanish, and he claims he works with clients, as if everyone else designs for robots or something. She at least is OK with beading. Veejay asks a ton of questions, and this seems like the most awkward pairing. But Veejay is making a bunch of zippers and he says he trusts her.
$500, which seems like a lot. Jesus insists Jarrad will like a beaded coat. Veejay buys denim which she says will be fine because it's cotton. Belania hunts for wool, but double brushed wool so the fibers don't poke out. She buys plaid, even though her client doesn't like pattern. I guess she could reverse it. Ethan is in the beaded section.
Antonio continues to complain that he hasn't won. I get that not giving him a win means you continue to get drama and good TV out of him, but it doesn't mean I want to listen to it. Veejay tries to stir the pot but it's not like she really needs to.
Christian Time. Everyone seems to be nervous. Belania has some shiny fabric, like silver lamé. And plaid. Somehow she'll have a trench coat that opens into a top and then a dress? Like does the top fall down? I'm not sure. Jesus has a tweed coat, and the tweed is kind of a gray blue shade which is not particularly masculine. He says he knows some fabrics will irritate the skin but it doesn't matter because he's planning to line the coat with silk. Foreshadowing. Christian says his mom has a coat like that. The coat comes off and there's a white dress shirt with a beaded pointed collar and open down to his navel. Sure.
Antonio has three reveals planned, and he's whispering about it as if someone will steal his idea to have multiple reveals. They put a bunch of shots of everyone looking over, but who knows where those are from. Anyway, there's a cape, and then a dress and then another dress. Christian is on board but it all has to be great. None of that Drag Race shit where the top layer is just an ugly blob and you know it's coming off. Veejay's reveal is a sweater, and Christian says the fabric is like his uncle's Christmas sweater. Veejay can do something crazier but her client is not crazy. Ethan has big like wide sleeves, or maybe they're just not sewn up yet. This is bright white, and then under that is a bustier and sheer fabric with beading. The two pieces maybe don't go together. Maybe it should all be white? Reveal a white mini dress? Ethan might have to change it last minute, but he doesn't have a lot of time.
Ethan decides to paint black on the white fabric, in some kind of Rorschach-style design that he claims mimics the “beauty” of eczema on the skin. Model fitting. Belania's client claims she likes the silver dress, but I think she's trying not to be difficult. Plus there are shorts? She wants to believe in Belania. The dress is cool, although the side panels are black and it looks like it's cut up to her hip on one side and that's why there are shorts. So the client hates it and Belania is nervous. Jarrad is also not sold because this coat is down to his ankles and he feels it is actually effeminate, which he is not thrilled about. Jesus is mad that Jarrad won't trust him. They show the outfit, and it's a very long tweed coat in dark navy, maybe, or dark blues and greens, with a long collar or maybe a scarf in navy, and then under this the shirt is a wrap shirt that wraps at the waist, so basically he is bare-chested. Like, with how narrow the coat opening is, most of his chest is uncovered. Christian says no one young and cool would wear this jacket. Like, Christian would never buy this and he's young and cool. Christian is 39 but we'll go with it. Jesus says “You're not as cool as me, I would wear it” and Christian just does the “hmm” noise that means “well isn't that interesting, bless your heart”.
Then he goes over to Veejay and tells her client to go ahead and tell her what he really thinks of the ugly sweater under the leather jacket. Heh. It's not that ugly but it is kind of boring. He says it's a Christmas sweater, so Christian freaks out because that's exactly what he said it was! OK that was pretty good. Veejay's client loves it and says he will be swagged out, so maybe Veejay is getting the “I listened too much to the client” edit. Ethan has a big white coat, which I think the ink blots are for the dress underneath? Or the paint is the coat and he's fitting the lining? I think the paint is the reveal. Christian hates this too because it's down to the floor and not fitted enough. For sure what his model has on now is that outfit the queen comes out in and you are just waiting for when she tears it off because it's so obvious there's something underneath. (If it's not obvious I prefer reveals that you don't see coming.) Ethan is struggling to do something cool but also keep to Christian's suggestions but also not make a drag outfit. Christian points out Law will go crazy. Ethan's client doesn't care what happens as long as it's good, because she does not want to get negative feedback. Antonio seems to have the cape but I'm not sure he has anything else for her to try on. Certainly they don't show her trying on a dress or anything.
Belania is behind and not really liking her outfit anymore. She doesn't have time to pivot, but the silver isn't working. It's actually a very long blouse, which means the shorts make more sense. We go to commercial with Belania freaking out that she's going home.
Runway Day. Jesus and Veejay read each other like they are actually friends. The clients show up and get dressed and complain. Well Jarrad complains. The shirt collar had been like a regular dress shirt collar, just beaded. At least that's what it looked like. It's now like, the points of the collar are much longer, but the bases are also wider, so what it looks like on the dress form is the tops of the beaded triangles almost touch, and then it's a wrap top so a V neck. So there's a keyhole opening. Jarrad thinks this is still too effeminate, but I'm not sure what can be done at this point. Somehow Jesus is going to change the collar, since that's the girly part I guess. Veejay has made leather pants and a leather jacket, and a sweater. Opening a jacket to reveal a sweater is not a reveal, at least in Ethan's opinion.
There's a fog machine today. Why? Who knows. Heidi has a miniskirt with feathers, you know where they take those really thin strands of feathers and place them spaced apart so it's just vaguely spiky. Guest judge is designer Harris Reed, and also Nikki Glaser. How many weeks has Nina been gone? Anyway this designer has made Met Gala looks so that's something.
Antonio: big puffy coat in a dark emerald green. We don't get a good look at it because she immediately takes it off and throws it on the floor. Under this is a short dress that hits above the knee with an A-line skirt and long sleeves. The top is cut like a jacket, but open to her waist, and you can see some beading on a bustier underneath. Also her boobs look great. There's a collar like a dress shirt collar, pointed, and I think the collar and maybe the shoulders are in a slightly lighter green. But everything else is the same dark emerald. At the end of the runway she takes off this dress and underneath is a strapless sheath dress with beading.
Veejay: leather pants and jacket in black. Or possibly very dark green. The pants are not tight, and the jacket is a moto jacket with some zippered side panels. There's the center zipper like a regular jacket, and then two vertical cuts on either side that make narrow slits. Also I think the pants are maybe a suede and a leather, because the sides are different from the front. Then he unzips the jacket and there is a green sweater. That kind of mottled knit? Like a heather? He doesn't even take the jacket off.
Belania: a long ankle length coat in a gray plaid with black stripes, and one thin orange stripe. There are big cuffs on the sleeves and a tied belt, and big lapels. It looks like a wrap coat without buttons. Under the coat is a silver top and shorts. The top is sleeveless, with a high neck that drapes all down the front for texture. Only in the front like a bib, though, because on the sides is just black, like a long line bra. The silver comes down asymmetrically almost to her knee on one side. The shorts are shiny black and almost look like a miniskirt. She never takes the coat off all the way, and I think it's because she struggled a little bit with getting it off her shoulders. As she turns around the top is just straps, there's no back.
Ethan: long white dress, a full skirt (or at least not tight) and sleeveless. The top has lapels that are showing some of the black paint, with a little placket like there are buttons. There's a belt, but it seems to be mostly a strip of fabric sewn on. Almost immediately she opens the coat, and underneath is a miniskirt and a halter top, with the ink Rorschach print in black and some purple or dark red. Sadly the bra cups in the top look like shit. They're way too far apart. The inside of the coat also is covered in ink designs.
Jesus: long tweed coat, which hits below the knee, and you can just see the shirt with a low V neck. Something I didn't notice in the workroom was how the tweed is actually sparkly. Under this coat is a white wrap top, like the fabric wraps and there is a tie at the side. The pants are wide but they aren't crazy, but there are two panels of beading at the hips. Imagine narrow triangles, one on either side, pointing at his crotch. At least they are the same color as the pants. I believe they are the collar pieces, because now the shirt just has a thin rectangle lining the neck and ending before the V part of the shirt.
So everyone is just out on the runway with their clients all at once. Law claims the most important thing is how the clients feel about the looks. According to the whole history of this show, this is bullshit. But they've never had a stylist as permanent judge, so I wonder if Law is actually going to care about the clients' opinions. Ethan's client loves it, because she wanted something so striking that no one would notice her skin. Law does call out the breast cups, and that he wishes her waist was snatched, but Ethan did do a proper reveal. The first dress was very demure and then underneath was a miniskirt and bustier. Somehow having the pattern on the outside of the cape would have made it better but I disagree. I liked having just plain white and then all the pattern inside. Heidi hated the cape/coat and says something about “taste level”. Like Heidi has any standing to say any kind of shit about taste levels. Antonio's coat is actually more of a cape. It's very big, and there are two big round buttons near the top, and openings for her arms. It sort of looks like big leg-of-mutton sleeves, but I think it's just because of how the cape bunches when she's got her arms through the armholes. Everyone loves the coat, and the other two levels. Law says he's attracted to her cleavage, which did look amazing on the runway but the dress is starting to slip down at this point. Nikki points out that the beading on the back of the dress is lighter, as in there are fewer beads. Interesting.
Veejay's client really loves his look, and it's very well made. But there's no reveal. He does finally take the jacket all the way off, but that's just...taking the jacket off. Then we move on to Belania so I guess we're done here. Law calls this look a mullet, because it is business on top and a party underneath. He says it's a girl all wrapped up in a coat with her high heels on so she can get out of the house in her club clothes. So he's confused? But essentially that's Ethan's look and you weren't confused about that? Belania's client says it's different from anything she already owns, and Law eventually gets her to admit she wouldn't buy this herself. Law declares it a complete miss, but doesn't say anything about the actual design. Nikki says it would have been better as a dress, which is fair. Heidi hates the look of the drape. Jarrad is now claiming the coat is “edgy” which is what he wanted, it's the shirt that is the problem. It's too “extra”. Law thinks it's messy, like where the tie is. The back of the shirt has two triangles of beading, so is that the collar? It's weird. So the shirt is not well made and Law insists Jesus didn't listen. They do all like the coat for some reason, but no one likes the shirt. Nikki says “pirate magician” and Heidi says “Dancing with the Stars”.
Everyone says goodbye and Jesus complains in confessional about how this doesn't make sense. Antonio and Veejay are the top two, so I guess we really are gonna care about the clients. They hold hands like they like each other, and then Antonio finally wins so maybe he'll shut up about it now. I'm not mad about it because between the two of them, his was the better design. Veejay was too boring and in any other season of this show she'd be in the bottom for not being true to herself. Jesus, Ethan, and Belania are all up for elimination.
This is the first time Jesus has been in the bottom so he's freaking out. Mostly the clients were happy today, especially Ethan's client. Heidi didn't like it, but she's not wearing it. They all giggle about how she did the reveal, but she sold it, even if the execution wasn't great. Belania's client didn't like it, and they all hated the top and the draping in the top. Belania knows this look isn't her anyway. Jesus didn't listen to Jarrad, and Law says it's fine to want to look masculine, and Jesus should have respected that. And they could tell he wasn't happy. Back in the Scrap Bin, Ethan tries to start shit by telling Veejay she shouldn't have been in the top because she didn't even have a reveal. She should be going home. The twins join in, because of course they do. Veejay is just like, maybe they appreciated how much work I put in.
Heidi says out of the bottom three, Ethan's client was the only one who was happy and also he had a good reveal. So it's between Jesus and Belania. As they come back out, we do the same thing we did last week which is to tell Ethan he's safe before the episode ends. Heidi thinks now both Jesus and Belania's reveals failed. Then she says they're both out? What?!?!?!?! Did this show just actually surprise me? Then it says “To Be Continued” so now I am suspecting some bullshit shenanigans. Way to get my hopes up.
There is no preview for next week because I suspect the bullshit shenanigans are so extensive there was no way to cut a preview without spoiling it. Supposedly it's Oz themed and there is someone on the internet claiming they saw both Belania and Jesus with green outfits so they must both make it. Far more likely they both have to do the one-hour “fix your look right now” challenge.
