TAR 36, Recap Leg 4, 4/3/24

Welcome to Leg 4! Last time, on Cooking Versus Tetris Should Not Be This Hard of a Decision, 11 teams raced to Gautapé, Colombia. Juan is back in his birth country, and reminisces. The nurses fight their way to second place, while Sean can’t handle all the heights. The boyfriends finish in first, and the twins Anthony and Bailey are eliminated for not choosing a Detour and sticking with it. Who will be eliminated. . . next? (click for more)

Finca Cafetera, Casa Loma, El Peñol, Colombia

Teams are transported to San Felix, Colombia, where they find Parapente BlueSky. (Toyouke: “Why are we just starting with the paragliding? Or whatever this is? Why not make this a task? Covid? IDK.”) Teams are then harnessed to paraglide into Bello, where the leg will start in fifteen minute increments.

La Meseta, Bello Colombia

Clue: Welcome to Medellín, Colombia! Make your way by taxi to Comuna 13 en Reversedero #1 and make your way to the base of the escalators to find your next clue.

First Departure 9:15 am

Ricky/Cesar (1st)

Amber/Vinny (2nd)

Second Departure 9:30 am

Derek/Shelisa (3rd) – who want to maintain their placing as much as possible. (Toyouke: “This early in the season I think "maintaining third" is probably not the worst idea.”)

Juan/Shane (4th) – and Juan is now in his birth city.

Rod/Leticia (5th)

Yvonne/Melissa (6th) – they are happy to be getting along.

Third Departure 9:45 am

Sunny/Bizzy (7th)

Kishori/Karishma (8th) – and Karishma is a licensed skydiver. Who knew?

Angie/Danny (9th)

Michelle/Sean (10th)

So teams make their way to the taxis and make their way to Comuna 13. Once they run through the the streets a little, they eventually find the escalators and the clue. Teams get their clue in the following order:

1- Ricky/Cesar

2- Amber/Vinny

3- Juan/Shane

4- Yvonne/Melissa

5- Derek/Shelisa

6- Rod/Leticia

7- Kishori/Karishma

8- Angie/Danny – who have difficulty finding the clue. Angie: "That's not a base" Danny: "I know" (Toyouke: “Do you know? Because I don't think you do and you're acting like your mom is stupid?”)

9- Sunny/Bizzy

10- Michelle/Sean

Teams open their clues when they get them and we get the fourth Detour Clue.

DETOUR:

Dance Vibe OR Wall Scribe

*Dance Vibe: Teams take the escalators all the way to the top without walking or running. Once there, teams choose a breakdance teacher to learn a 30 second combination. Once they perform the dance and approved by the head breakdancer, teams get their next clue.

*Wall Scribe: Teams take the escalators all the way to the top without walking or running. Teams then find the murals with eight rebus pieces attached to them. Teams then must solve the rebus puzzle (“The world is smaller than you think.”) Teams then find Chota 13, a graffiti artist, who will determine if teams are correct. Once approved, teams get their next clue.

(Toyouke: “There are several possible answers to this rebus but I think you can run through them quickly?”)

Teams make their way on foot to their Detour option and arrive in the following order:

1- Juan/Shane choose Dance Vibe

2- Ricky/Cesar choose Wall Scribe

3- Amber/Vinny choose Wall Scribe

4- Derek/Shelisa choose Dance Vibe

5- Yvonne/Melissa choose Dance Vibe

6- Rod/Leticia choose Dance Vibe

7- Kishori/Karishma choose Dance Vibe

8- Michelle/Sean choose Dance Vibe

9- Angie/Danny choose Wall Scribe

10- Sunny/Bizzy choose Wall Scribe – but somehow don’t understand how rebuses work? (Toyouke: “I thought the brothers were dumb, but these two are in good competition. Not an "ohm" by any stretch.”) So after 30 attempts or so, they Bald Snark to Dance Vibe.

Much breaking and rebus solving ensues. So, teams complete the detour in the following order:

1- Amber/Vinny – and Amber starts to melt down because Vinny wants her to go faster. This might not turn out well. (Toyouke: “Normally I would be on Amber's side, but not on a race. Also Vinny's not really being that mean about it. But this argument is dumb. If he really thought she was giving her all he wouldn't be telling her she's holding them back, and she clearly thinks everyone will watch this show and take her side and she doesn't have to really do anything else. And then she's like "I have anxiety you can't yell at me" and he is acting like he has only said encouragement. Maybe he realizes she isn't going to go any faster but he also has not apologized.”)

2- Ricky/Cesar

3- Angie/Danny – because Danny is apparently great at puzzles. (Toyouke: “Danny bragging about how amazing he is at puzzles better be foreshadowing of an immense failure.”)

4- Juan/Shane

5- Derek/Shelisa

6- Rod/Leticia

7- Michelle/Sean

8- Kishori/Karishma

9- Yvonne/Melissa

10- Sunny/Bizzy

Teams are now instructed to make their way back down the escalators and take their taxis to Plaza Botero to get their next clue. Teams arrive at Plaza Botero (after getting stuck in horrid traffic) in the following order:

1- Amber/Vinny

2- Ricky/Cesar – who make sure to use their time wisely in the cab. (Toyouke: “Getting the driver's phone to not waste time in traffic is a great move.”)

3- Angie/Danny

4- Juan/Shane

5- Derek/Shelisa

6- Rod/Leticia

7- Michelle/Sean

8- Kishori/Karishma

9- Yvonne/Melissa

10- Sunny/Bizzy

When they rip open the clue, teams get the fourth roadblock.

ROADBLOCK:

Who’s feeling artsy?

In this roadblock, one team member must choose a board with a map of the area and 12 placards representing various statues in the plaza sculpted by Fernando Botero. Once teams have gotten them correct, a street vendor will hand them their next clue.

For those of us St. Louisans, we are very familiar with Botero’s sculpture, as his Man on Horse sits at the corner of Hanley and Wydown. And for all you trivia buffs, he is looking to the left.

The following teammates take the Roadblock:

1- Amber – (Toyouke: “I don't think this woman thinks she's letting Vinny down. That wasn't her argument. Her argument was "You are going too fast", not "I can't go faster". Those are different. Also, I don't trust Amber to be accurate, whether or not she put the shade down.”)

2- Ricky

3- Danny

4- Shelisa

5- Rod

6- Shane

7- Michelle - who decides the museum is in front of her instead of behind her, so all her answers are wrong.

8- Karishma

9- Yvonne

10- Sunny

After much identifying of statues, teams complete the Roadblock in the following order:

1- Amber/Vinny – who help Danny get started. (Toyouke: “Do not help Danny. This is the dumbest idea. He can probably read a map better than you. How are you going to go from demanding your girlfriend run faster to "this weak team will give us back energy and we're great people for helping"”.)

2- Ricky/Cesar

3- Angie/Danny

4- Juan/Shane

5- Rod/Leticia

6- Yvonne/Melissa

7- Derek/Shelisa

8- Sunny/Bizzy

9- Kishori/Karishma

10- Michelle/Sean – but it really looks like the vendor took pity on them . . .

Teams are now instructed to make their way on foot to Parques del Rio Medellín, the PIT STOP of the fourth leg of this racearoundtheworld. The last team to arrive WILL be eliminated!

1- Ricky/Cesar – who win $2500 each.

2- Amber/Vinny – (Toyouke: “This relationship is toxic. She cries when she wants to be a victim and acts like it's really that she's letting him down, which causes him to immediately backpedal and grovel.”)

3- Angie/Danny

4- Rod/Leticia

5- Juan/Shane

6- Derek/Shelisa

7- Yvonne/Melissa

8- Sunny/Bizzy

9- Kishori/Karishma

10- Michelle/Sean

And Michelle and Sean are eliminated. Sean reminds us that on the opposite side of fear, there is life. Also, Phil wants to double dutch, so Michelle and Sean pull out their jump ropes. Phil is doing great, until the ropes hit the cameraman. (Toyouke: “This is extremely cute, but I want to know why they were carrying jump ropes.”)

ORDER NOW:

1st – Ricky/Cesar

2nd – Amber/Vinny

3rd – Angie/Danny

4th – Rod/Leticia

5th – Juan/Shane

6th – Derek/Shelisa

7th – Yvonne/Melissa

8th – Sunny/Bizzy

9th – Kishori/Karishma

Next week: We’re off to Santiago, Chile! There’s rock climbing! And the dreaded stick shift. Until next time!
