TAR 35, Recap Leg 6, 11/8/23

Welcome to Leg 6! Last time, on What’s the Deal With the U-Turn Vote?, 9 teams continued racing through Jaipur, India. There was a U-Turn vote. Texas got U-Turned, and they complained about it. It slowed down Steve and Anna Leigh, but ultimately it was one pair of brothers that came in first (Yay, Greg and John!) and the other that came in last. So Liam and Yeremi were eliminated. Who will be eliminated. . . next? (click for more)

Arrival at the pit stop last episode:

1st – Greg and John, Team Cat Dads

2nd – Rob and Corey, Team ASL Family

3rd – Joel and Garrett, Team Dad Bod

4th – Morgan and Lena, Team Business Sisters

5th – Todd and Ashlie, Team Comeback Couple

6th – Andrea and Malaina, Team Philly Jawns

7th – Steve and Anna Leigh, Team Texas Heat

8th – Robbin and Chelsea, Team Cougar Mom

Badi Chaupar, Jaipur, India

6:42 AM Greg/John (1st)

Clue: Fly 4000 miles to Frankfurt, Germany! Proceed to a ticket agent to pick up your tickets. Once there, choose a marked vehicle and drive yourselves to Kaub and take the ferry across the Rhine. While on the ferry exchange 5 euro for a bag of historical coins. When you exit the ferry, continue driving yourself to Burg Rheinstein to get your next clue.

7:25 AM Rob/Corey (2nd)

7:28 AM Joel/Garrett (3rd)

7:36 AM Morgan/Lena (4th)

7:54 AM Todd/Ashlie (5th)

8:02 AM Andrea/Malaina (6th)

8:03 AM Steve/Anna Leigh (7th)

9:18 AM Robbin/Chelsea (8th)

So teams make their way to the travel agent in Jaipur. Teams arrive in the following order:

1- Greg/John

2- Rob/Corey

3- Joel/Garrett

4- Morgan/Lena

5- Todd/Ashlie

6- Andrea/Malaina

7- Steve/Anna Leigh

8- Robbin/Chelsea

Teams are informed at the travel agent that this is the only flight to Frankfurt from Jaipur. So teams return to their taxis and make their way to Jaipur International Airport. Teams drive and arrive at JAI in the following order:

1- Greg/John

2- Rob/Corey

3- Joel/Garrett

4- Morgan/Lena

5- Todd/Ashlie

6- Andrea/Malaina

7- Steve/Anna Leigh

8- Robbin/Chelsea

Since they are all on the same flight, the Amazing Yellow Line takes us from Jaipur to Frankfurt am Main, and teams arrive at Frankfort Airport and get their cars in the following order:

1- Rob/Corey

2- Steve/Anna Leigh

3- Greg/John

4- Morgan/Lena

5- Todd/Ashlie

6- Joel/Garrett

7- Andrea/Malaina

8- Robbin/Chelsea

So, as instructed, teams now drive themselves to Kaub and find the Färhe-Kaub to cross the river. (Toyouke: “I'm glad for them having to drive themselves and also navigate.”) Teams find the ferry in the following order:

Ferry 1

1) Todd/Ashlie

2) Joel/Garrett

3) Morgan/Lena

4) Steve/Anna Leigh

Ferry 2

1) Greg/John

2) Rob/Corey

Ferry 3

1) Robbin/Chelsea – who actually end up on a different ferry, don’t find the guy to give them their coins, ask someone on the other side, return and find the correct ferry.

Ferry 4

1) Andrea/Malaina – who drive around a very long time, find the wrong ferry, get their money changed, make their way to Burg Rheinstein, realize they don’t have the correct money, go back to the ferry, realize they took the wrong ferry, complain to the money changer about getting the wrong money, cross back over the river, find out they are 10 km away, drive a little, then find out they are 25 km away, find the correct ferry, get the correct coins. (Toyouke: “I really like them but this such a huge mistake.”) I hope you can figure out how this is going to turn out.

Teams talk to the money changer and pay their 5 Euro in order to get a bag of Witten, a historical type of coin. Teams finish crossing the river, drive themselves to Burg Rheinstein and arrive at the cluebox in the following order:

1- Todd/Ashlie

2- Joel/Garrett

3- Steve/Anna Leigh

4- Morgan/Lena

5- Greg/John

6- Rob/Corey

7- Robbin/Chelsea

8- Andrea/Malaina

When they rip open the clue, teams get the sixth roadblock.

ROADBLOCK:

Who’s ready for change?

In this roadblock, one team member take their bag of Witten and pay a robber baron with it to gain entry to the castle. The entry is 5 Groshen, but teams must convert Groshen to Heller to Kappen to Witten using the provided conversions to come up with 15 Witten. Once they have entered the castle, roadblockers get their clue and must rappel down the side of the castle to be reunited with their partner.

The following teammates take the Roadblock:

1- Todd

2- Garrett

3- Anna Leigh

4- Morgan – who has a business degree and converted crazy fast.

5- John

6- Corey – who knows math and calculated the conversions quickly

7- Chelsea – who had no time for this and just kept bringing witten until the amount was correct. (Toyouke: “Everyone else did the math. You're just going to run back and forth and make yourself tired for nothing?”)

8- Andrea

After much coin conversion and rappeling, teams complete the Roadblock in the following order:

1- Morgan/Lena – (Toyouke: “I did not expect them to jump so many teams at once!“)

2- Steve/Anna Leigh

3- Joel/Garrett

4- Todd/Ashlie

5- Rob/Corey

6- Greg/John – who ask for directions to their next location as they are heading down from the castle.

7- Robbin/Chelsea – who see this happening and decide to follow them.

8- Andrea/Malaina

Teams are now instructed to drive themselves to the city of Cologne and park in the marked parking garage to find Gürzenich Köln and get their next clue. Teams arrive at Gürzenich Köln in the following order:

1- Greg/John – (Toyouke: “I did not expect them to jump so many teams at once!“)

2- Robbin/Chelsea

3- Todd/Ashlie

4- Rob/Corey

5- Steve/Anna Leigh

6- Morgan/Lena

7- Joel/Garrett

8- Andrea/Malaina

Teams are now instructed to participate in a Cologne Carnival with one team member pedaling a husar bicycle, while the other throws roses to the crowd. Teams then complete an obstacle course in order to get their next clue. Teams complete the task in the following order:

1- Robbin/Chelsea

2- Greg/John

3- Todd/Ashlie

4- Rob/Corey

5- Steve/Anna Leigh

6- Morgan/Lena – who realize how close the beards are to them and pick up the pace.

7- Joel/Garrett

8- Andrea/Malaina – however, for them, it’s more as if the task was completed rather than them completing the task. More on that soon.

Teams are now instructed to travel by foot to Hohenzollernbrücke to get their next clue. Teams arrive in the following order:

1- Greg/John

2- Robbin/Chelsea

3- Todd/Ashlie

4- Rob/Corey

5- Steve/Anna Leigh

6- Morgan/Lena

7- Joel/Garrett

When they rip open the clue, teams get the seventh roadblock.

ROADBLOCK:

Who’s feeling locked in?

In this roadblock, the team member that did not complete the first Roadblock of the leg must find a marked combination lock amidst the thousands of locks on the bridge. Once they find a lock, they must open it using the combination, which is the name of the oldest cologne produced in Cologne, 4711. Roadblockers deliver the open lock to the proctor who will give them their next clue.

(Toyouke: “Oh there is no way you will know the number without asking random people. Other than that, haven't they done this Roadblock before? With locks? In addition to it being Swedish Roulette AGAIN? Also, it's interesting how some teams asked people for the number first and it seems like some teams didn't read that part of the clue until they found the lock.”)

The following teammates take the Roadblock:

1- Greg

2- Robbin

3- Ashlie

4- Rob

5- Steve

6- Lena

7- Joel

After much lock finding, teams complete the Roadblock in the following order:

1- Greg/John

2- Robbin/Chelsea

3- Todd/Ashlie

4- Rob/Corey

5- Steve/Anna Leigh

6- Morgan/Lena

7- Joel/Garrett

Teams open their clues and we get the seventh Detour Clue.

DETOUR:

Just For Kicks OR Matter of Taste

*Just For Kicks: Teams make their way to Deutsches Sport & Olympia Museum and make their way to the rooftop to play dartboard soccer. Each team member must kick two balls at the target, and the four balls must total 66 points. When complete, the referee will give them their next clue.

*Matter of Taste: Teams make their way to Hafenterrasse to taste nine types of mustard. Teams memorize the mustards and their German names, and then must take a taste test and get all nine correct in order to get a coupon for a free sausage with their favorite mustard and their clue from the sausage vendor.

(Toyouke: “OK this soccer dart task is worse than I thought. Getting an exact score will be very hard. Although, if you can't ask anyone what the German means I'm not sure how you can match up mustard flavors.”)

1- Greg/John choose Matter of Taste – (Toyouke: “Ah. So they tell you which one is which and you have to identify the flavor later. That's not as bad as I thought.”)

2- Todd/Ashlie choose Just For Kicks – rather, Todd chooses it, but realizes when they get there that Ashlie can’t really play soccer or kick a ball, and he has difficulty scoring the points as well. (Toyouke: “I don't know why she's so shocked, the task said you have to score exactly? You should already know that? And listen, I played soccer for years and I don't know if I ever had the skill to aim the ball well enough to get an exact score.”) So they Bald Snark and head back to Matter of Taste.

3- Robbin/Chelsea choose Matter of Taste

4- Rob/Corey choose Just For Kicks – and actually analyze the game and figure out how to score their points.

5- Steve/Anna Leigh choose Matter of Taste

6- Morgan/Lena choose Matter of Taste

7- Joel/Garrett choose Matter of Taste – and they have decided that they are the last place team, so they start taking their time. (Toyouke: “I don't dislike the beards but this whole "we're never negative, we are having fun" seems so judgmental and superior.”)

Much ball kicking and mustard tasting ensues. So, teams complete the detour in the following order:

1- Greg/John

2- Robbin/Chelsea

3- Todd/Ashlie

4- Rob/Corey

5- Steve/Anna Leigh

6- Morgan/Lena

7- Joel/Garrett

Teams are now instructed to travel on foot to the Schokoladenmuseum, the PIT STOP of the sixth leg of this racearoundtheworld. The last team to arrive WILL be eliminated!

1- Greg/John – who $4000 each.

2- Robbin/Chelsea

3- Todd/Ashlie

4- Rob/Corey

5- Steve/Anna Leigh

6- Morgan/Lena

7- Joel/Garrett – Phil: “You know, I mentioned we were going to a new country this season, and it’s really great that you still have a chance to go since you’re team number seven.” It’s been a long time since I’ve seen a team this convinced they were going home and be saved by the Phil.

8- Andrea/Malaina

As Andrea and Malaina arrived at Gürzenich Köln, they find the party complete and Phil standing in the empty room to eliminate them from the race, as all the other teams have checked in at the Schokoladenmuseum. They are happy to have raced together, as they have been friends for 27 years, and will continue to be friends.

ORDER NOW:

1st – Greg/John

2nd – Robbin/Chelsea

3rd – Todd/Ashlie

4th – Rob/Corey

5th – Steve/Anna Leigh

6th – Morgan/Lena

7th – Joel/Garrett

Next week: We’re soaring through Slovenia! Anna Leigh is exhausted. (Toyouke: “Anna Leigh looks terrible, and I don't mean that in a "women must always wear make-up and never look human" way, but in a "this girl must be exhausted to have messy hair and look tired" way.”) And another Express Pass is up for grabs! Until next time!
