TAR 32, Recap Leg 5, 11/11/20

Welcome to Leg 5! Last time, on How Long Does It Take to Make a Cello?, 8 teams raced to Asunción, Paraguay. Leo and Elana survived the Double U-Turn, and 6 AM Salt Mine Departure Alliance managed to help each other at the cello-making Roadblock, which pushed Will and James to their second win. DeAngelo and Gary had isues at the Detour, and were almost eliminated, but because Kaylynn and Haley took four hours to put a cello together, they came in last on the first non-elimination leg of the race, and will face a Speed Bump this leg. Who will be eliminated. . . next? (click for more)

Arrival at the pit stop last episode:

1st – Will and James, Team Gay Reality Stars

2nd – Michelle and Victoria, The Cajun Asians

3rd – Leo and Alana, Team Operation Nerdgasm

4th – Riley and Maddison, The Hawaiian Volleyball Brothers

5th – Eswar and Aparna, The Engineer Siblings

6th – Hung and Chee, The Honeymooning Asians

7th – DeAngelo and Gary, Team Another Mother Brothers

8th – Kaylynn and Haley, Team Blonde Real Estate

Plaza Italia, Asunción, Paraguay

1:41 AM Will/James (1st) – and Will is super excited to drive stick! Because apparently he knows how to drive stick? (Toyouke: “I completely missed where Will and James tried to explain themselves. Whatever.”)

Clue: Fly 6000 miles to Paris, France! Once there, choose a marked Volkswagen Tiguan and drive yourselves to Domaine de Chantilly in Chantilly to get your next clue.

1:55 AM Michelle/Victoria (2nd) – who tell us they are opposites but are loving spending time together.

2:35 AM Leo/Alana (3rd)

2:39 AM Riley/Maddison (4th) – who are also excited for stick shift and would like to win a leg at some point.

3:11 AM Eswar/Aparna (5th) – and Eswar comments that the Race has done nothing but highlight his weaknesses.

And we stop getting departure times.

Hung/Chee (6th)

DeAngelo/Gary (7th) – Michelle: “Paraguay, isn’t that in Africa? I know Uruguay is.” Oh darling, please.

Kaylynn/Haley (8th) – who are still upset at Will and James, and make sure they know it when everyone is on the boat together.

So teams make their way to the airport and arrive in the following order:

1- Will/James

2- Michelle/Victoria

3- Leo/Alana

4- Riley/Maddison

5- Eswar/Aparna

6- Hung/Chee

7- DeAngelo/Gary

8- Kaylynn/Haley

Teams board flights in the following order:

Flight 1, arrives 7:50 am

1) Leo/Alana

2) Michelle/Victoria

3) Riley/Maddison

4) Will/James

Flight 2, arrives 8:05 am

1) Kaylynn/Haley

2) DeAngelo/Gary

3) Eswar/Aparna

4) Hung/Chee

(Toyouke: “Wait was there finding flights and we didn't see ANY OF IT?!?!? BOOOO “) The Amazing Orange and Red Lines then takes us from Asunción to Paris, and teams arrive at Charles de Gaulle International Airport in the following order:

1- Riley/Maddison – who manage to get out of the garage before. . .

2- Will/James – who actually can’t drive stick shift. (Toyouke: “Side note: Look how tall that boy is! When he gets out of the car it looks like he's going to hit his head on the roof of the tunnel.”)

3- Michelle/Victoria - Michelle: "I'm fluent in stick shift!"

4- Leo/Alana – and Leo moves Will and James’ car out of the way so that everyone else can RACE!

5- Hung/Chee

6- DeAngelo/Gary

7- Eswar/Aparna

8- Kaylynn/Haley – who also struggle with driving stick shift. Like REALLY struggle. (Toyouke: “I find it interesting that the previews spent so much time on the boys not driving stick, but not a single word about the blondes.”)

So teams now drive themselves to Chantilly, which is 16 miles from the airport, remember that. And teams arrive in the following order:

1- Riley/Maddison

2- Leo/Alana

3- Will/James

4- Hung/Chee

5- Eswar/Aparna

6- Michelle/Victoria

7- DeAngelo/Gary

8- Kaylynn/Haley

And Kaylynn and Haley get their Speed Bump.

SPEED BUMP:

A Speed Bump is a task that must be performed by the last place team on a non-elimination leg when the non-elimination leg is not immediately followed by the next leg. Once they complete this task, they may return to the place where the Speed Bump occurred and continue the leg. In this speed bump, the team must clean the riding gear for two of the horses at the Chateau de Chantilly. Once the gear is cleaned to the specifications of the keeper, teams get their next clue.

Teams complete the Speed Bump in the following order:

1- Kaylynn/Haley

After much riding gear cleaning, they continue with the rest of the teams and get their clue.

When they rip open the clue, teams get the fourth roadblock.

ROADBLOCK:

Who has an eye for art?

In this roadblock, one team member must enter the Musée Condé and look through the paintings for one of nine characters roaming the party in the next room. Once a character had been identified, the roadblocker must take the party guest to the curator and tell them the name of the artist of the painting correctly in order to get their next clue.

The following teammates take the Roadblock:

1- Riley

2- Alana – who has an art degree.

3- James

4- Hung

5- Aparna – who takes 16 tries.

6- Victoria

7- Gary

8- Haley

(Toyouke: “I wonder why everyone is looking for men. Weren't there women? I feel like especially in this time period, women's dress was more unique. It'd be easier to find.”) After much character identifying, teams complete the Roadblock in the following order:

1- Riley/Maddison

2- Leo/Alana

3- Will/James

4- Hung/Chee

5- Michelle/Victoria

6- DeAngelo/Gary

7- Eswar/Aparna

8- Kaylynn/Haley

Teams are now instructed to travel by foot to Le Vertugadin Restaurant, and whip enough Chantilly Cream to the specifications of the chef to fill four pies, and deliver them to the tent outside. Teams arrive in the following order:

1- Riley/Maddison

2- Leo/Alana

3- Hung/Chee

4- Will/James

5- Michelle/Victoria

6- DeAngelo/Gary

7- Eswar/Aparna

8- Kaylynn/Haley

Teams now whip cream, fill pies, go to the tent and get pies thrown at them. Once they deliver the pies, teams get their next clue in the following order:

1- Riley/Maddison – who then go bak and tell the alliance about the thrown pies. (Toyouke: “This is a dumb thing to draw a line in the sand with your alliance. You're declaring yourselves and letting Leo and Alana know who is with who, and for what? To warn people that someone is throwing pies? Big deal.”)

2- Leo/Alana

3- Will/James

4- Hung/Chee

5- Michelle/Victoria

6- DeAngelo/Gary

7- Eswar/Aparna

8- Kaylynn/Haley

Teams are now instructed to drive themselves back to Paris (this time, 31 miles) to Musée des Arts Forains to get their next clue.

CAUTION: YIELD AHEAD! HAVE YOUR HOURGLASS READY!

Teams arrive at the Yield at Musée des Arts Forains in the following order:

1- Riley/Maddison

2- Leo/Alana

3- Hung/Chee

4- Will/James

5- Eswar/Aparna

6- DeAngelo/Gary

7- Kaylynn/Haley

8- Michelle/Victoria – who take SIX AND A HALF HOURS to find the museum. (Toyouke: “I can't tell if the Cajun Asians are dumb or if they got bad directions. This is why it's so important to make teams drive themselves on the Race. There's always a team with zero navigation skills and you need to weed those teams out.”)

This is the third Yield of the race. Teams may choose to yield any team they wish (well, the team has to be behind them), but they may only use the Yield once during the race. If a team is yielded, they must turn over the hourglass that the Yielders found on Leg 2 and wait for the predetermined amount of time (10 or 20 minutes) based on the hourglass.

Teams make their Yield decisions in the following order:

1- Riley/Maddison (20) choose to Yield no one

2- Leo/Alana (10) choose to Yield no one – even though they could have totally yielded Will and James this time, but apparently they forgot they hated them.

3- Hung/Chee (10) choose to Yield no one

4- Will/James (20) choose to Yield no one

5- Eswar/Aparna (10) choose to Yield no one

6- DeAngelo/Gary (20) choose to Yield no one

7- Kaylynn/Haley (20) choose to Yield no one

8- Michelle/Victoria (20) choose to Yield no one

Teams get their next clue in the following order:

1- Riley/Maddison

2- Leo/Alana

3- Hung/Chee

4- Will/James

5- Eswar/Aparna

6- DeAngelo/Gary

7- Kaylynn/Haley

8- Michelle/Victoria

When they rip open the clue, teams get the fifth roadblock.

ROADBLOCK:

Who wants to step right up?

In this roadblock, one team member must enter the Musée des Arts Forains and complete three French carnival games: the passe boule (a ball toss in which one has to get 3 balls in the mouths of clowns), the chamboule-tout (a tower of 10 cans which teams must completely knock over), and the courses de chevaux (a horse race game that teams win by rolling a ball). Once their tickets had been punched with all three games, roadblockers receive their next clue from the shooting gallery. Teammates that did not take the first Roadblock of the leg must take the second Roadblock.

The following teammates take the Roadblock:

1- Maddison

2- Leo

3- Chee

4- Will

5- Eswar

6- DeAngelo

7- Kaylynn

8- Michelle

After much carnival game playing and French clown entertainment, teams complete the Roadblock in the following order:

1- Riley/Maddison

2- Hung/Chee

3- Leo/Alana

4- Will/James

5- DeAngelo/Gary

6- Eswar/Aparna

7- Kaylynn/Haley

8- Michelle/Victoria

Teams are now instructed to make their way to Pont des Arts, the PIT STOP of the fifth leg of this racearoundtheworld. The last team to arrive MAY be eliminated!

1- Riley/Maddison – who win a trip for 2 from Travelocity to Vietnam.

2- Hung/Chee

3- Leo/Alana

4- Will/James

5- DeAngelo/Gary

6- Eswar/Aparna

7- Kaylynn/Haley

8- Michelle/Victoria

And Michelle and Victoria are the last team to arrive, and thus eliminated from the Race. They are thankful and say they are the closest they have ever been.

ORDER NOW:

1st – Riley/Maddison

2nd – Hung/Chee

3rd – Leo/Alana

4th – Will/James

5th – DeAngelo/Gary

6th – Eswar/Aparna

7th – Kaylynn/Haley

Next week: We’re off to Berlin, Germany! The 6 AM Salt Mine Departure Alliance might finally break apart. Will still can’t drive a stick shift. And Hung freaks out on the side of a building. Until next time!
