TAR 36, Recap Leg 3, 3/27/24

Welcome to Leg 3! Last time, on This Leg Was Not Intended for the Colorblind, 12 teams continued racing through Puerto Vallarta. The cousins and the double dutch coaches ended up at the Roadblock too early and had to switch gears. The twins switch Detours when they don’t realize how intelligent they are not. And everyone struggles with the heat. Rod and Leticia finish in first again, and get a prize this time, while Chris and Mary are eliminated. Who will be eliminated. . . next? (click for more)

Casa Kimberly, Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Mexico

Teams are whisked away to Licenciado Gustavo Diaz Ordaz International Airport, and their charter flight to Medellin, Colombia. Once there, teams will be transported by Amazing Yellow Line to the Pit Start Location, the parking lot at El Peñón de Gautapé, where they will depart in three groups to run a leg designed by Expedia. (Toyouke: “I don't know if I like this level of involvement in terms of the sponsor. Carrying the gnome around is plenty. Your whole leg was designed by the sponsor and if you win the leg you can win a vacation just like this one? I'm not feeling it.”)

El Peñón de Gautapé, Gautapé, Colombia

Clue: Welcome to Gautapé, Colombia! Make your way up the stairs of El Peñón de Gautapé to get your next clue.

First Departure 7:15 am

Rod/Leticia (1st)

Ricky/Cesar (2nd)

Derek/Shelisa (3rd)

Second Departure 7:30 am

Juan/Shane (4th)

Yvonne/Melissa (5th)

Angie/Danny (6th)

Amber/Vinny (7th)

Third Departure 7:45 am

Anthony/Bailey (8th) – who admit they are sloppy racers.

Sunny/Bizzy (9th) – and Sunny reveals that she got an emergency phone call that her grandmother had passed away.

Kishori/Karishma (10th)

Michelle/Sean (11th)

So teams make their way up El Piñón de Gautapé. Or try to. Teams arrive in the following order:

1- Ricky/Cesar

2- Derek/Shelisa

3- Rod/Leticia

4- Amber/Vinny

5- Juan/Shane

6- Yvonne/Melissa

7- Angie/Danny – (Toyouke: “I feel like Danny means well but he's coming off as really overbearing.”)

8- Sunny/Bizzy

9- Anthony/Bailey

10- Michelle/Sean

11- Kishori/Karishma

Teams open their clues when they get them and we get the third Detour Clue.

DETOUR:

Bandeja Paisa OR Yipao

*Bandeja Paisa: Teams make their way by water taxi to Gautapé. Teams then make their way to Calle 29 and find their marked station, indicated by the photo provided in their clue. Teams must then prepare three plates of Bandeja Paisa and make it presentable. Once all the dishes are delivered to the abuelas and approved, teams get their next clue.

*Yipao: Teams make their way by water taxi to Gautapé. Teams then make their way on foot to Parqueadero Municipal and choose a marked jeep. Teams then load up the jeep with all of the provided items. Once approved, teams get their next clue.

(Toyouke: “It seems as though people are not reading "cooking vs. Tetris" but "cooking vs. moving furniture")

So first, teams make their way to the water taxi dock, where they choose a water taxi. Once teams choose a taxi, however, they have to stick with their decision. (Toyouke: “Why the specification that you can't switch boats? Is that normally a problem?”) Teams arrive in Gautapé in the following order:

1- Ricky/Cesar

2- Derek/Shelisa – and Shelisa talks about her cancer scare and living life.

3- Rod/Leticia

4- Juan/Shane – Juan talks about having been born in Colombia.

5- Amber/Vinny

6- Yvonne/Melissa

7- Angie/Danny – whose water taxi stalls out its engine, and struggles to get moving. (Toyouke: “See they said you can't switch boats, but I feel like a malfunction should allow you to switch boats? And the fact that they edited in someone reading the part that says you can't switch was foreshadowing.”)

8- Sunny/Bizzy

9- Kishori/Karishma

10- Anthony/Bailey

11- Michelle/Sean

(Toyouke: “So if they came back down the same staircase, does that mean teams went up and back down in under 15 minutes? Or whatever the gap was?”) So teams now make their way on foot to their Detour.

1- Ricky/Cesar choose Bandeja Paisa – and we learn Cesar is a cook.

2- Juan/Shane choose Bandeja Paisa – and since Juan is Colombian, he has made this dish before.

3- Derek/Shalisa choose Bandeja Paisa

4- Rod/Leticia choose Bandeja Paisa

5- Amber/Vinny choose Bandeja Paisa

6- Yvonne/Melissa choose Bandeja Paisa

7- Angie/Danny choose Bandeja Paisa – and help the cousins find it as well. Angie: “"They can beat us in a footrace." Danny: "That's OK" (Toyouke: “.....no? It's not OK?”)

8- Kishori/Karishm choose Bandeja Paisa – but are very nervous because neither of them eats nor prepares meat.

9- Sunny/Bizzy choose Bandeja Paisa – but only because efforts to find Yipao were futile, and they found the cooking challenge first.

10- Anthony/Bailey choose Yipao – but once again feel that they are not smart enough for this detour option, so they Bald Snark to Bandeja Paisa. “Maybe we can get an advantage by still having some energy." (Toyouke: “Maybe the first smart thing these two meatheads have said this whole time.”) When they arrive, they stare at the recipe and don’t recognize any of the names of the foods, so they Double Bald Snark back to Yipao. (Toyouke: “These boys are acting like there is some situation on this planet where they will be smart enough for this Tetris Detour.”) After some tetrising, they realize once again that they are not smart enough for this, and employ the rare Triple Bald Snark back to Bandeja Paisa. (Toyouke: “See. These two are too dumb for TAR.”)

11- Michelle/Sean choose Yipao – and even though they start to figure out a strategy to load the truck, they decide it will take too long, so they Bald Snark to Bandeja Paisa.

Much cooking and jeep loading ensues. So, teams complete the detour in the following order:

1- Ricky/Cesar

2- Derek/Shelisa

3- Rod/Leticia – after getting sent back for poor plating.

4- Juan/Shane

5- Sunny/Bizzy

6- Amber/Vinny

7- Yvonne/Melissa

8- Kishori/Karishma – after getting sent back for miscooking the plantains.

9- Angie/Danny

10- Michelle/Sean

11- Anthony/Bailey

Teams are now instructed to make their way on foot to El Cordero de Gautapé and choose a marked tuk-tuk to travel to Casa Loma to get their next clue. Teams arrive at El Cordero in the following order:

1- Ricky/Cesar

2- Derek/Shelisa

3- Rod/Leticia

4- Juan/Shane

5- Sunny/Bizzy

6- Amber/Vinny

7- Yvonne/Melissa

8- Kishori/Karishma

9- Angie/Danny

10- Michelle/Sean

11- Anthony/Bailey

Teams now tuk-tuk to Casa Loma, where they arrive in the following order:

1- Ricky/Cesar

2- Derek/Shelisa

3- Rod/Leticia

4- Juan/Shane

5- Sunny/Bizzy

6- Amber/Vinny

7- Yvonne/Melissa

8- Kishori/Karishma

9- Angie/Danny

10- Michelle/Sean – and then struggle getting down the hill, due to Sean’s fear of heights.

11- Anthony/Bailey

When they rip open the clue, teams get the third roadblock.

ROADBLOCK:

Who’s feeling picky?

In this roadblock, one team member must go into the coffee field and harvest Arabica coffee beans and process enough to get one kilogram. Once completed, the scale will rise, and teams will get their next clue.

(Toyouke: “This Roadblock makes me uncomfortable. It feels like rich Americans (let's be real, I'm sure it's usually white people) paying for the "opportunity" to do manual labor. When the people that usually do it are exploited and paid nothing. But Expedia romanticized it so you can swan in for an hour and pretend to do work and not notice anyone else's working conditions.”)

The following teammates take the Roadblock:

1- Cesar – (Toyouke: “At least they have a good point about being first so you can strip all the easy bushes.”)

2- Shelisa

3- Leticia

4- Shane

5- Sunny

6- Vinny

7- Melissa

8- Kishori

9- Angie

10- Michelle

11- Anthony

After much bean picking and weighing, teams complete the Roadblock in the following order:

1- Ricky/Cesar

2- Amber/Vinny – (Toyouke: “I would like to know how Vinny got 1kg on the first try, when everyone else made two trips because they weren't sure how much the skins would weigh. And he was claiming he know exactly how much 1kg weighed. But if his basket weighed 1kg he shouldn't have had 1kg of clean beans. Right?”)

3- Rod/Leticia

4- Derek/Shelisa

5- Juan/Shane

6- Sunny/Bizzy

7- Yvonne/Melissa

8- Kishori/Karishma

9- Angie/Danny

10- Michelle/Sean

11- Anthony/Bailey

Teams are now instructed to make their way on foot to Finca Cafetera on the grounds of Casa Loma, the PIT STOP of the third leg of this racearoundtheworld. The last team to arrive WILL be eliminated!

1- Ricky/Cesar – who win a trip for two from Expedia to Cape Town, South Africa.

2- Amber/Vinny

3- Derek/Shelisa

4- Juan/Shane

5- Rod/Leticia

6- Yvonne/Melissa

7- Sunny/Bizzy

8- Kishori/Karishma

9- Angie/Danny

10- Michelle/Sean

11- Anthony/Bailey

And Anthony and Bailey are eliminated. They admit it’s not how they wanted it to end, but they were happy that they got to spend the time together. I think they’d do better on Survivor or Big Brother, honestly.

ORDER NOW:

1st – Ricky/Cesar

2nd – Amber/Vinny

3rd – Derek/Shelisa

4th – Juan/Shane

5th – Rod/Leticia

6th – Yvonne/Melissa

7th – Sunny/Bizzy

8th – Kishori/Karishma

9th – Angie/Danny

10th – Michelle/Sean

Next week: Medellin, Colombia! There’s paragliding! The firefighters get stumped by a clue, and Michelle stumbles on hers. And Amber and Vinny start fighting. Until next time!
