Project Runway All Stars 3/27/19--"All the World's a Runway" summary

Previously on “Project Runway All Stars”: the final four designers were asked to create three looks for a family portrait. No one complained about having to make clothes for children or for men which was nice. Anne straight up told everyone not to care about their clients, which was rude, and then she was the guest judge which I thought was suspicious. But probably someone canceled last minute and she filled in. Isaac and Georgina continued to praise Dmitry for the same techniques, as they have been doing all season, because making the same dress over and over is the sign of “a really good designer”. Then Anne said it was hard to judge because no one pleased their clients. In the end Biddell won, and then I guess they couldn't agree on who to get rid of because everyone was being irrational so no one was eliminated. (click for more)

It's the end of the Lifetime era of Project Runway. I've kind of gone back to liking the show? It feels weird.

Everyone dresses up to arrive at the Baccarrat for...tea? With Alyssa? She says the final challenge is to make a six look collection with the theme of “whatever you want”. $3000 but you only get four days. Oh also all the “guests” next door are the models. So they go to the “Grand Salon” and see a million models all at once. We are not shown any fighting over models.

Biddell is thinking about conspiracy theories. Specifically, the one that says the Queen of England is a reptilian. Sure. Irina says something about pure geometry and 3D shapes that she might not actually be able to construct. Michelle is inspired by the 1970's and “Harvest Moon” by Neil Young. 70's silhouettes and layering. Dmitry is sketching faces. I am sure his collection will include floating panels.

Irina buys some lace with shapes. Biddell finds a fabric that Anthony Ryan used before, but whatever, there's no time. Also some cork.

Day One. Plenty of serious working, although Michelle is trying to do some commentary. Dmitry says that they won't have their fitting until day 3. I also spy some floating panels because of course. Irina spends the whole day cutting triangles. That's it. So that's probably going to come up again.

Day Two. Time for helpers. Sean waits for Michelle to walk in the room so they can scream. Christina is here for Biddell, but then Irina gets Mondo and Dmitry gets Erin. I am pretty sure I remember not liking Erin? The helpers will be here the rest of the time. Erin interviews that having to make six looks in four days is rude. Don't be salty because you weren't on this season. Biddell is thrilled to have Christina help him. Dmitry hopes to have four looks done by the end of the day.

Anne shows up. You guys, the last time we have to listen to Anne! She kicks the helpers out first. Michelle has a bunch of stuff done. Anne wants to try on a coat, which is actually not bad, and Anne is happy about it. Lots of colors and mixtures of different fabrics. The theme is going to be elegance and not being a hot mess. You will not be surprised to know Dmitry's jacket with faces is floating panels and sheer strips. Anne wants a little more sex and romance. Irina has a couple of things started, and the triangles are going to make pyramids and 3D shapes. Right now she has two red looks with wide hips, so maybe they are too similar. Maybe put this jacket with pants? Maybe. Biddell has made a dress out of cork, with a million horizontal thin strips all put together so it looks solid from a distance but bends in an interesting way. Anne is concerned that everything looks like his work, but the whole collection is not cohesive. Then she gives everyone a hug and goes away for the last time! Bye Anne!

Biddell says whether or not he wins, this will be his favorite collection to date. Irina has no plan because everything is taking forever to do. Michelle has pinned her statement piece, and she's going to look at it first thing tomorrow and edit if needed, right before she sews.

Day Three. Biddell is making a sequined gown for his closing look. Dmitry cuts up a black lace, because Anne said she loved it so he feels he needs to use it. Michelle needs to edit. She says she needs to win because she's broke. Winning is the only thing that's going to keep her in fashion. Irina and Mondo have a weird conversation where he tells her that he knows she has something else on her mind, and she needs to let it go. She stars crying, and rather than continue to comfort her Mondo just kind of says she needs to win? It's weird. After a commercial we see him actually comforting her, and she reminds us of her family phone call where her mom said her breast cancer was getting worse. She's been thinking about it too much.

Model fitting. Everyone explains their collection to all their models. Irina has something for every model, which is good. Actually I think everyone has at least something for each model. The only person we see with any problems is Dmitry, who says he has a lot of work. Michelle is scrapping a whole look because it's sad. Irina has recovered and is on the right track.

Day Four. The helpers come in and tell everyone they only are there for three hours. We see a short montage of Dmitry getting overly praised. The helpers leave and then some businesswoman shows up to lecture them on branding. I guess right before the runway show they are presenting themselves? And they need to be able to describe their design style? What is the point of this? Lots and lots of working, and then a break with champagne and cake.

Runway Day. Irina has to put zippers in everything and hem all the pants. Everyone has a bunch of last minute finishing stuff to get done. Hot makeup guy Scott. Probably for the last time! So sad. Biddell is rapping.

It's going to be disjointed and quick descriptions because it's almost midnight and I have to work tomorrow. Guest judge is actress Andrea Riseborough. So I think the “make sure you can brand yourself” talk was about the little blurb you do before the actual show. Which they all have done before. Irina's up first. Lots of volume, big peplums and exaggerated hips. The pyramids are on a skirt that's basically a hemisphere. It looks like a geodesic dome. There's a top with all the black lace pyramids, and a whole suit out of the white lace she bought. It's got great volume, and it manages to look both high fashion and also wearable.

Biddell is next. He starts with a minidress with a big zipper down the front. He's got models doing spins and stuff. There's a blouse with long sleeves (or strips that hang down to the floor) and then harem pants and then cork suspenders that are like half-circles. They don't lie flat. There's a lot of cork and snakeskin. Some tight pants of orange paillards and then a tight top with giant bell sleeves. Fringe and hot pants. The last dress is a tight long dress with a high neck and long sleeves, in black with the bronze sequins down the sides. It's great. The cork is really interesting and everything is tight but with long sleeves and high necks.

Michelle has on a pink sequined dress and she's extra cutesy when talking about her collection. Big sleeves with a short skirt. A cold shoulder top, but with leggings? Lots of sequins and 2 cold shoulder tops, where there are sleeves but they hang down far. A coral long pants and a matching top with sheer sleeves. There's a long coat with more sequins on the arms. The last dress is very 70s, with some floating panels and a sheer back and arms. Most of the dresses are loose and not fitted through the waist.

Dmitry says his collection is about his personal journey. It starts with the jacket with the two faces, facing each other, no shirt and skinny black pants with a sheer stripe down each side. Just a plain black dress, very short, with big shoulders and some silver. There is a lot of sheer, whether it's sheer panels or strips or there's a top with beading that is very carefully lined, or they blurred out the model's breasts very well. The lace dress he made because Anne liked the fabric looks like black shapes on the model's skin. She basically looks naked.

Everyone is going to get individual critiques? That seems...different. Irina talks about a fearless woman. Everyone loves the black lace look, because the pyramids work better in that fabric. Georgina thinks they're a little too heavy in red wool. Alyssa says they can see all of Irina's skills in this collection. Biddell explains his reptilian idea. Georgina wishes maybe one look could have been clean. Isaac says if they based the win on things they've never seen then he'd win. Maybe the blue scaly coat is too much.

Michelle talks about the 70's. Isaac loves the first and the last dresses. He also likes the simplicity of the middle coral look, because there aren't a million fabrics going on. One of the cold shoulder tops is heavy. The last look, a silver striped sequin look with sheer top and sleeves and silver cuffs, everyone loves to death. Dmitry gets choked up talking about his collection. Huh. It's very ambitious. They of course love the jacket, and even though it's more floating panels, the faces are cool. There's a mustard dress with a giant ruffle over one shoulder, and it doesn't quite go. Isaac praises the skinny pants, because instead of having a tuxedo stripe, it's just sheer. His claim that no one has thought of that is not true, though, because I'm pretty sure I can go get some leggings with a sheer panel down the sides. The short dress with a deep V and sliver trim is I guess lovely and not dated? The sheer pieces are perfectly sheer.

Biddell takes risks, and he really stays true to himself. Isaac does want to make sure they know he doesn't like Biddell's aesthetic. Georgina thinks that it's not fantastical enough to take you somewhere, but it's not real enough to be believable. Irina is clean and concise and cohesive. The lace looks are light and clean. Everyone loves Dmitry, because they've loved Dmitry this whole time. Isaac thinks maybe the collection is a little dry. Georgina loves Michelle's girl. The pieces are easy and relaxed. Georgina says it maybe lacks polish. Alyssa thinks Irina had more consistent looks, but Georgina (of course) disagrees, saying Dmitry showed something totally different (I guess) and that means he has breadth. OK but you haven't wanted to see breadth from him this whole time. Isaac counters that Michelle had a far more interesting outcome.

Biddell is out. Aww. Irina is out. This stupid show. I guess Alyssa's opinion doesn't count. Michelle...wins? Michelle wins! Wow. I thought for sure they were going to give it to Dmitry. Lots of congratulations, some cute story about how Michelle once wrote to Isaac and he doesn't remember at all.

Join me tomorrow for regular Project Runway, back to its roots on Bravo. It reminds me of what I liked about this show in the beginning. But no more Lifetime.
