Project Runway 3/28/19--"All the Rage" summary

Previously on “Project Runway”: the designers were divided into groups of three to design futuristic fashion to go with body modifications. Silicone prosthetics like shoulder horns and gills and whatever. Tessa got really bossy, but in the end her team's collection was cohesive, and she did give plenty of credit to her team. Especially Sebastian, who made part of her garment and his own garment. He ended up winning. Hester insisted on buying tulle (against the advice of Christian), then asked Nadine for fabric because she didn't want to use the tulle, then decided to use the tulle anyway, after cutting up all the other fabric. But the team of Renee, Kovid, and Frankie ended up on the bottom, mainly because Kovid and Frankie had unfinished looks. Frankie couldn't recover from being in the bottom twice in the first two episodes and was sent home. (click for more)

Kovid meditates out on the balcony. He says his brother was killed in a car accident a couple of years ago, and he had a rough time because they were close. Meditation really helped him. It's time to recharge and get out of the bottom. Nadine complains to several of the boys that she asked them to do dishes last night and they didn't. They try to deflect by asking if they can't just have a great morning, which to me is the response you get when people know they fucked up and have no response.

Karlie says to get excited, but it's kind of boring? Anyway, she brings out some models, each one in a print. Wearing a print head-to-toe is much more fashionable now. Use one single print to make a head-to-toe editorial look. “Editorial” just means it doesn't have to be a realistic look that anyone would actually wear in public. However, you only have one day to make your outfit. Sebastian wants to keep his model, so for everyone else it's a free-for-all again. I wonder if they automatically got rid of Frankie's model, or if they wait to see whose card is left behind after everyone finds someone.

Nadine says her latest collection had a ton of prints, but now her model is plus-sized so you can't put fat women in a print? It just sounds like such a whiny excuse. Rakan is sketching a jumpsuit with elastic. Tessa is this season's “I never use prints what will I do” designer. She also is dwelling on Brandon's comment that he doesn't know her hook.

Sonia for some reason didn't think stripes were a print. Kovid is thrilled, because he uses a lot of color, but he also knows you need to line up the print on the seams. Rakan goes for houndstooth. Christian is bored with it though. He talks about his mom and grandmother for a minute. Garo says something about raves. Hester thinks she hasn't shown the judges who she is, but I think she has. They just don't like it.

Venny also doesn't work with prints, but he doesn't seem to be as upset about it as Tessa is. Garo has a wide purple and pink striped fabric, which he knows gives him a ton of work because all the stripes have to line up. He brags that he's the only one here who challenged himself.

Christian arrives and brings Marni Senofonte, who is a celebrity stylist. She's going to be here throughout the competition to help with styling. Really? So on Runway Day she'll be hovering to give advice on using the accessory wall? That's a great idea actually. Also when are we going to get a Project Runway style competition for stylists? Think about it: everyone gets the same dress, and you have to use accessories to make it unique. Or you're given an event and you need to figure out what your celebrity should wear. I would totally watch that.

Now Marni's going to have ten minutes with each designer. So everyone brings fabric samples to the lounge to explain what is happening. Kovid talks about Asian designs. He can do anything, it's editorial. I like how enthusiastic he gets. It's cute, although I hesitate to call him cute because it sounds insulting. Afa is making something with kimono sleeves, for a samurai woman. Marni is telling him to think about like, if you get the mesh shoes, do you put a sock so it shows through the mesh? See this is why I want a stylist competition! When a designer thinks of that level of detail, and plans it out, it's so impressive to me. Bishme gets super dramatic. He's a big Marni fan already. Hester wants to cover some shoes, and the uncovered shoes will not work. Tessa has a huge print with huge shapes and circles and rectangles. Marni points out that the print is so big that she can make several different prints out of what she has, just based on where she cuts things.

Bishme is sewing a big circle for a hat. He says his girl is going to Spain to meet some guy she met online, who bought her ticket, but he might be a catfish, OR she's a drug mule. Heh.

Christian Time! I'm going to have to say Christian Advice Time because “Christian Time!” sounds like the Crusades or the Inquisition or something. Hester's print is a red and white checked print like a tablecloth, which seems...tame for Hester. She's babbling about changing her look or something, and Christian says to just be what she wants to be. Just make it perfect. Hester interviews that she had a teacher in fashion school who didn't like her, and how much extra attention she needed, and the teacher had her kicked out. OK but why did you need extra attention? You know? Anyway, everyone hates the quirky fun girl, blah blah. Listen, do what you want and make the designs you want, but be honest with yourself that your look is not mainstream and people aren't going to all fall over themselves to buy it. Rakan has a jumpsuit, and Christian jokes about how tall it is. There's also a jacket happening. He has great ideas, but the wrong fabric can be “old lady” and then the idea is lost. So much work to do. Christian hollers at Kovid that he needs to get in the sewing room. Afa has a black and white leaf print. She needs to still look young, and it can't look like you could buy it at the mall. Sebastian and Afa joke about some sewing technique that is Sebastian's secret. Nadine has a leopard print, and she shows Christian how she can cinch the waist.

Model fitting. Kovid is making a gas mask. Yeah, sure. Rakan has bunched up the legs of his jumpsuit with elastic but they look really weird. Nadine loves her outfit but not on her model. She tells the girl she's not walking properly and moving her shoulders too much and she actually tells her to practice at home. Tessa and Hester argue about a flounce at the bottom of Tessa's pants.

Back at the penthouse everyone eats and chit chats about how they want to win. Garo really wants to bring what he has to a global audience.

Runway Day. Someone is hot gluing something. Lots of gluing fabric to shoes and bags. Garo's stripes aren't lining up perfectly so he's kind of freaking out. Marni is here too. Rakan's jumpsuit knees look so weird. They're all gathered and bunched at her knees and it's odd. Marni tells Afa to get a fanny pack and they try on different shoes. No hot makeup guy Scott. Nadine is helping Garo sew.

Guest judge is designer Adam Selman. Bishme: long dress and a cape with pointy shoulders, with a bag and hat. The hat is shaped like a pringle. He's even covered the shoes. The print is red with white crosses and white wavy lines. The dress is nothing special, just a straight skirt with a slit on each side, and an empire waist. The back of the dress has a capelet. Rakan: jumpsuit in a beige tweed windowpane pattern. The top looks like she's draped a poncho over a shirt. The legs are loose, except for at the knee, where they're gathered with elastic. It just looks wrinkled and odd. The poncho draped part of the top comes off, and we can see there's a bunch of elastic in that also, but diagonally across the chest? I think? Kovid: baggy pants and a loose top in an orange and black plaid. The pants are like pajama pants, and the top is gathered in the front somehow, but full and loose over her stomach and hips. From the back it looks like a short sleeved shirt, but the front has a ton of extra fabric. Also a mask over her face. Jamall: long dress in black and white wool plaid. It's a basic strapless bodice, and the skirt has a lot of folds and volume. When she walks out, part of the skirt is pulled up over one shoulder to add some extra volume.

Renee: long dress in dark camo print. The top has long sleeves and a high neck, and there's a ruffle at each wrist. The skirt is full, and has a lot of volume and folds. Somehow part of it can be pulled over her head? I'm not sure how that works. Nadine: pants and a long sleeved top in a light cheetah print. The pants are loose to the knee and then tight below that. They gather at the knee in an unflattering way, and then cover the shoes. The back of the top is open, and drapes in a cowl shape. Nadine is bitching that her model is a terrible walker. Is she? Lela: long tea-length full skirt, and a short top, in black. The top has short sleeves and looks like it's buttoned once in the middle of her chest. The top unwraps to show a sports bra. I think it's a black camo print?

Hester: top with a capelet, and an asymmetrical skirt. The top basically has a short capelet that hangs down to her elbows, and the skirt is a miniskirt one one side, and then midi length on the other side, like two halves of two different looks. On the short side, that leg has a garter belt. Also a round hat with a puffball, and an earring but only on one side. I thought it was a capelet, but you can't see the rest of the top, so maybe it's just a crop top that's loose. Tessa: off the shoulder dress with a long skirt. The skirt is at the knee on one side and then slants down to her ankle on the other. There are long sleeves and a straight strapless neckline. The print is cut up so it just looks like abstract shapes and colorblocking. Sonia: long dress and leggings, in what looks like the same print Nadine used. The top is one shouldered, and then the other side is attached at the neck to a collar, and has a pointed bell sleeve at the end of her arm. The skirt is a handkerchief hem and the leggings go down over the shoes but they don't cover them entirely.

Garo: pink and purple striped jacket and leggings. The leggings are very tight, as is the jacket. From here it looks like all the stripes line up. The jacket has a high neck and it's very striking. Venny: jumpsuit in a dark purple. I think there are stripes? It's hard to see. The jumpsuit is baggy through the arms and legs but it looks gathered at the wrists and ankles. Afa: pants and a crop top, with a jacket over them. The print is a leaf pattern, but I think he used the reverse side for the jacket so it looks different. Sebastian: jumpsuit, or at least long pants and a long sleeved top. The print is a beige with small white leaves. There is a sheer skirt and some volume over her chest that move as she does. The sleeves are baggy.

Afa, Lela, Jamall, Bishme, Venny, Sonia, Renee, and Tessa are safe. Kovid wanted to play around with this garment. The judges love it, the print is bold, he's very enthusiastic, the volume is great. The judges know he was motivated to do well. Sebastian also wanted to be playful. It moves really well. There's some random generic praise, and then Brandon says whatever he had to do to make this was worth it. And then Sebastian says he came to the US a couple of years ago and has been doing housekeeping to make money. The judges all gasp and act shocked as if no one ever took a crappy job to make money to do something they loved. Garo tells the judges about raves and sweet and hard. Sadly the judges don't like the print, and then Brandon points out the stripes on the leggings angle into her crotch. Oops. Nina says it crossed the line from kitsch to costume.

Hester says something about picnic baskets. She also has no idea how she finished. It's channeling Hester's quirkiness in a refined way. They really love it. Now it's about how Hester has repressed herself to be normal and work in fashion and she should be herself. Rakan wanted something modern. It's a really subtle print, and the back of the jacket is really cool. That's where the diagonal gathering is, not over her chest. The elastic at the knees is too weird. Plus I think he's going to get in big trouble for not having a good print. Nadine tells the judges that she had a bunch of ideas about volume, but once she got her model she knew she “couldn't express [her]self with the volume”. Blaming your model is not a good look. Also she couldn't buy a bold print because she would look fat. Brandon calls her out and says her explanation just now is not very nice to her model. Nadine tries to backtrack and say her model is beautiful, but come on. Nina says it feels like she improvised, and when Nadine responds that she planned it this way, with the open back jacket and the pants gathered at the knee. So Nina says it's a matter of taste, then. Nadine hilariously says she's not going to make excuses and she stands behind her look. So I guess she doesn't think “my model is too fat” is an excuse. When Elaine tries to tell her the judges are here to help her get better, Nadine kind of shrugs and says she didn't know this look was so bad. Nina has a smug look on her face, because to her, having a bad look and not knowing means your taste level is garbage.

Back in the Scrap Bin Nadine says she really thought her look was fine, but fuck it, they can send her home, she doesn't care. If you break down Hester's look, the individual pieces are wearable. It's very simple, but happy and the combo is fresh. Kovid has some applique that gives some volume that no one could really see until they got up close. The print could have been a disaster, but he pulled it off. Sebastian's look has a big cowl neck with volume, but the fabric is very flimsy. He was able to construct some stiffness just with skilled sewing. Rakan's look doesn't even look like a print. The back is nice, but the front is not. He drapes a lot and the judges are already bored with it. Garo's pants are kind of superhero. It's a fine line, but he clearly had an idea. There's good construction and some potential, but this particular garment needs some more work. Nadine's look has terrible pants that shouldn't be on anyone. The judges then ask the model herself if she felt Nadine was blaming her, and she says yeah, it felt like Nadine decided if she had a curvy model she couldn't reach her full potential. Ouch. Plus that means Nadine must have complained enough during model fitting that her model knew what was up.

Hester's look is fun and happy, but Sebastian did something amazing when he was immune and could have half-assed it. Nadine's taste level is a problem, but there's some stuff going on. Nina gave her a one for a score. Rakan's look is confusing. Nadine is still in the Scrap Bin yelling about how no one should feel sorry for her and she's ready to go home.

Kovid is in. Hester is the winner. OK so I guess it was important to encourage her? I guess? Because Sebastian did better, I think. But he'll be fine with not winning. Now she's gushing about how the judges like her and they like what she does. She has immunity, and says she's going to do something weird. Sebastian is in. Garo is in. Rakan didn't have a good print, and the silhouette was confusing. Nadine didn't put herself in the look and made a dated look. Nadine is out. Rakan is in. Nina tells her they had a problem with her silhouette and the fit, and then wishes her luck. Nadine says thank you and then walks off the stage, ignoring Karlie trying to talk to her. She's done with this show, basically.

Next week: camping, unconventional materials, Hester complains about people stealing her stuff, I think they stay out at the campsite to sew/construct and the runway is outside too.

I loved Sebastian's print. It was like a picture of cable-knit sweater material printed on fabric. I was hoping it would be for sale on Bravo's website but they only have Tessa's look from Episode 1. I was glad to say goodbye to Nadine and her horrible attitude.

I'm over Project Runway. Marni wearing the body of Christ (without the cross) as an ear bauble was the nail in the coffin. Marni looks like she buys her clothes from a clown costume thrift store.
