TAR 29, Recap Leg 3, 4/13/17

Welcome to Leg 3! Last time, on This Harness Hurts My Manhood!, we were reminded that 11 teams of strangers were in São Paolo. Liz and Michael inexplicably pulled off a win, and Shamir complained incessantly that harnesses weren’t made for men. At any rate, the only team of girls, Jessie and Francesca, went home. Who will be eliminated. . . next? (click for more)

Trianon Park, São Paolo, Brazil

8:47 AM Liz/Michael (1st)
Clue: Fly to Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania! Once there, make your way to by taxi to Askari Monument. Your next clue will be in a newspaper nearby. You have $320 for this leg of the race.

CAUTION: BLIND DOUBLE U-TURN AHEAD!

8:48 AM Vanck/Ashton (2nd) – and Ashton still holds her grudge against the boys. (Toyouke: “Vanck and Ashton should U-Turn someone because they need that boost. It'll end up being a strong team they should try to hold back, but it's for a stupid reason, because RACE.  Also no one screwed you over because you left second instead of first in a group of ten, ASHTON.”)
8:59 AM Matt/Redmond (3rd) - Redmond is happy he is part of Team Man.
9:32 AM Seth/Olive (4th)
9:56 AM Becca/Floyd (5th) – Floyd is happy they communicate so well.
9:57 AM Brooke/Scott (6th)
9:58 AM Tara/Joey (7th)
10:04 AM London/Logan (8th)
11: 23 AM Shamir/Sara (9th) – and Shamir still hasn’t gotten over the harness. (Toyouke: “Who cares what Shamir is doing? Let him talk to the other boys about his balls or whatever.”)

Since we’re heading to Africa, it’s no surprise that everyone is on the same flight to Dar Es Salaam, so the Amazing Yellow Line takes us there. (Toyouke: “I don't like that they read the clue and they already showed the Amazing Yellow Line.”) We magically end up at Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar Es Salaam. Teams arrive in the following order:

1- Shamir/Sara
2- Matt/Redmond
3- Becca/Floyd
4- Brooke/Scott
5- Seth/Olive
6- Liz/Michael
7- London/Logan
8- Tara/Joey
9- Vanck/Ashton

Teams are now getting in taxis and heading to Askari Monument. They arrive in the following order:

1- Shamir/Sara
2- Becca/Floyd
3- Seth/Olive
4- Tara/Joey
5- Matt/Redmond
6- Brooke/Scott
7- Liz/Michael
8- London/Logan
9- Vanck/Ashton

Teams find the newspaper stand and look through it to find their clues. They find the ad for the ferry to Zanzibar and get the clue in the following order:

1- Shamir/Sara
2- Brooke/Scott
3- Becca/Floyd
4- Matt/Redmond
5- Seth/Olive
6- Tara/Joey
7- Liz/Michael
8- London/Logan
9- Vanck/Ashton

Teams then find their way to the ferry and get in line. There are shenanigans, but everyone gets their tickets for the first ferry in the following order:

1- Matt/Redmond
2- Vanck/Ashton
3- Liz/Michael
4- Becca/Floyd
5- Shamir/Sara
6- Seth/Olive
7- Tara/Joey
8- Brooke/Scott
9- London/Logan

Teams ferry to Zanzibar and make their way to Mkokotoni Market via taxi. Teams get taxis in the following order:

1- Brooke/Scott
2- Liz/Michael
3- Seth/Olive
4- Tara/Joey
5- Vanck/Ashton
6- Matt/Redmond
7- Becca/Floyd
8- London/Logan
9- Shamir/Sara

When they arrive, teams find the U-Turn. (Toyouke: “Shouldn't the U-Turn be AFTER the Detour?”)

This is a Double U-Turn. Teams may choose to U-turn any team they wish (well, the team has to be behind them), but they may only use the U-Turn once during the race. If a team is U-turned, they must go back to the Detour choices and complete the Detour that they did not complete. This U-Turn is doubled, meaning two teams may U-Turn two other teams. Phil, during his explanation, does not say how many U-Turns there will be on this race. This U-Turn is also blind, so the U-Turned Team will not know who U-Turned them.

1- Tara/Joey choose to U-Turn Seth/Olive
2- Vanck/Ashton choose to U-Turn Matt/Redmond
3- Liz/Michael cannot U-Turn
4- Brooke/Scott cannot U-Turn
5- Becca/Floyd cannot U-Turn
6- Matt/Redmond are U-Turned and cannot U-Turn
7- London/Logan cannot U-Turn
8- Seth/Olive are U-Turned and cannot U-Turn
9- Shamir/Sara cannot U-Turn

(Toyouke: “Can't argue with U-Turning two very strong teams.”) So Matt and Redmond and Seth and Olive have been U-Turned and now must complete both Detour options.

And we get the Detour Clue.

DETOUR:
Build It OR Weave It
*Build It: Teams must travel by dhao to build two wooden desks in a workshop. Once approved by the carpenter, teams deliver the desks to a nearby school and pass a simple Swahili lesson to get their next clue.
*Weave It: Teams must travel by dhao to weave two baskets out of palm fronds to get their next clue.

1- Tara/Joey choose Build It – (Toyouke: “I love that Joey is 100% convinced Matt and Redmond are responsible for the other U-Turn.”)
2- Becca/Floyd choose Build It
3- Brooke/Scott choose Build It
4- Vanck/Ashton choose Build It
5- Liz/Michael choose Build It
6- Seth/Olive choose Build It – and then, per the U-Turn, proceed to Weave It afterwards. They decided to start here when they say the boys head toward Weave It, to prevent them from using their pacing for working faster. Good call. (Toyouke: “Interesting. They've got a good point, that if the boys can't see where their direct competition is, they won't have that extra motivation.”)
7- Shamir/Sara choose Build It – and Shamir gets a splinter.
8- Matt/Redmond choose Weave It – and then per the U-Turn, head to Build It.
9- London/Logan choose Weave It – and Bald Snark to Build It after getting frustrated.

Much desk building and basket weaving ensues. So, teams complete the detour in the following order:

(Seth/Olive complete Build It) – (Toyouke: “And that is why you U-Turn Seth and Olive.”)
1- Liz/Michael
(Matt/Redmond complete Weave It)
2- Tara/Joey
3- Brooke/Scott
4- Vanck/Ashton
5- Becca/Floyd
6- London/Logan
7- Matt/Redmond
8- Shamir/Sara
9- Seth/Olive

Teams are now instructed to make their way to Darajani Market. Once there, teams had to find the clue near the front entrance. Teams arrive and get the clue in the following order:

1- Tara/Joey
2- Liz/Michael
3- Vanck/Ashton
4- Becca/Floyd
5- London/Logan
6- Brooke/Scott
7- Matt/Redmond
8- Shamir/Sara – who get screwed by a taxi driver.
9- Seth/Olive

Once they arrive, teams get the second roadblock clue.

ROADBLOCK:

Who’s ready to do some market research?

In this roadblock, one team member must enter Darajani Market and purchase all of the items on a shopping list using their Race Money. Once teams get all the items and have them approved by the family chef, teams will get their next clue.

The following teammates take the Roadblock:

1- Joey
2- Michael
3- Vanck
4- Floyd
5- London
6- Brooke
7- Matt
8- Sara – who runs out of money.
9- Olive – who has to use Brazilian currency to make some purchases. (Toyouke: “OK I might try to pay with US dollars although I would try to avoid it. But why would people in Zanzibar ever accept Brazilian real?”)

After much shopping, teams complete the Roadblock in the following order:

1- Liz/Michael
2- Tara/Joey
3- Vanck/Ashton
4- Matt/Redmond
5- Becca/Floyd
6- London/Logan
7- Brooke/Scott
8- Shamir/Sara
9- Seth/Olive

Teams find now that they must travel to Emerson On Hurumzi Rooftop Tea House, the PIT STOP of the third leg of this racearoundtheworld. The last team to arrive MAY be eliminated!

1- Liz/Michael – who win a trip for two from Travelocity to Amsterdam.
2- Tara/Joey
3- Vanck/Ashton
4- Matt/Redmond
5- London/Logan – actually, it was Becca and Floyd who check in fifth, but Floyd can’t find his passport. (Toyouke: “is that the team that lost a passport?!?! Of course. Holy crap, was that just Becca completely losing it? Oh thank God.”) So, thankfully, their taxi driver had given them his card, so they called him to get the passport back.
6- Brooke/Scott
7- Shamir/Sara
8- Becca/Floyd
9- Seth/Olive

And Seth and Olive are eliminated. They wish they could stay longer, but have no regrets, because, after all, it is a competition. (Toyouke: “That's too bad about Seth and Olive. They were a strong team. This depended a lot on when you got to the boats, though.”)

ORDER NOW:
1st – Liz/Michael
2nd – Tara/Joey
3rd – Vanck/Ashton
4th – Matt/Redmond
5th – London/Logan
6th – Brooke/Scott
7th – Shamir/Sara
8th – Becca/Floyd

Next week: More fun in Tanzania. Vanck and Ashton can’t communicate. And Brooke finally reaches her breaking point. Until next time!
