TAR 28 Recap Leg 12, 5-13-16

Welcome to Leg 12! Last time, on God, Another Season of Gimmicky Nonsense, 11 teams of internet celebrities raced from their hometowns around the world. As usual, eight teams were eliminated along the way, most recently Burnie and Ashley when they fell into the trap of travelling to the Shenzhen Civic Center, which was pictured on the clue, instead of the Library Terrace, which was printed on the clue. (Toyouke: “I barely remember some of these people.”) That leaves best friends Tyler and Korey, who took an early lead in the race and then fumbled about halfway through, leading to one of the closest races to the Pit Stop in race history. Since then, they’ve recovered, and managed three first place finishes in a row. Also in the running are engaged dancers Dana and Matt, who, although a strong team, had numerous meltdowns on the race and threatened to quit more than once. And quintessential underdogs, mother and son Sheri and Cole, with their positive attitude and crazy luck of being last on two of the three nonelimination legs, managed to squeeze through to the third spot. Who will win The Amazing Race 28? (click for more)

Phil lets the teams know that they are all on the same flight, and as a reward for making it to the final three, all the teams are being upgraded to Premium Class for the trip home! (Toyouke: “Why do they get a flight upgrade? FLY COACH LIKE EVERYONE ELSE “) Teams leave Shenzhen and head to catch their flight in Guangzhou at Baiyun International. Teams arrive in the following order:

1- Tyler/Korey – who pull out their wigs as soon as they get on the plane. (Toyouke: “OMG. They actually had wigs this whole time.”)

Teams make their way to Angelus Plaza, and find the cluebox in the following order:

3- Tyler/Korey – who miss the cluebox in front of the building, and end up running around looking for it, putting them farther behind. (Toyouke: “No go back down!”)

And teams get the thirteenth roadblock clue.

ROADBLOCK:

Who’s ready to take a leap of faith?

In this roadblock, one team member must make their way to the top of Angelus Plaza and jump of the ledge for a clue. Once the roadblocker gets the clue, teams can leave. If the clue is not procured, the clue is moved closer to the building and the roadblocker must continue to attempt until they get the clue.

The following teammates take the Roadblock:

1- Matt – who takes one attempt.
2- Sheri
– who takes two attempts.
3- Tyler – who takes three attempts. Korey: “Tyler had to pick an instructor, and he got Brandon, his new boyfriend. I think he’s failing on purpose to spend more time with Brandon.” Tyler: “Why did they not pick the hot boy?” (Toyouke: “He's not that hot, Tyler. I mean he's cute and all but come on.  That said, hee.”)

After much jumping off of buildings, teams complete the Roadblock in the following order:

1- Dana/Matt
2- Sheri/Cole
3- Tyler/Korey

Teams are now instructed to make their way to Santa Barbara via helicopter. Once there, teams must make their way to Stearns Wharf and find a marked dinghy to search for the Theresa Ann, an historic boat docked at the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum. Teams reach the helipad in the following order:

2- Sheri/Cole
3- Tyler/Korey

Teams fly from LA to Santa Barbara and land at the Santa Barbara Airport in the following order:

3- Tyler/Korey

Teams then take taxis to Stearns Wharf and arrive in the following order:

1- Dana/Matt
2- Sheri/Cole
3- Tyler/Korey

Teams find the marked dinghies and find the Theresa Ann in the following order:

1- Dana/Matt
2- Sheri/Cole – (Toyouke: “Sheri and Cole fall victim to the Amazing Editors. Twice.”)
3- Tyler/Korey

Teams are now instructed to make their way to Rattlesnake Canyon and find Gibraltar Rock to get their next clue. Teams arrive at Gibraltar Rock in the following order:

1- Dana/Matt – after having let their taxi go and had to call for another one.
2- Sheri/Cole – who accidentally try to take Tyler and Korey’s taxi, but abandon that idea when their driver doesn’t recognize where they want her to go.
3- Tyler/Korey – who ultimately get their cab driver, who still doesn’t know Gibraltar Rock.

And we get a task that asks, “Are you ready for some synchronized mountaineering?” Teams are rigged up, and while one team member does a 300 foot Tyrolean Traverse (on their backs), the other climbs down the mountain face into the canyon. Both team members collect half the clue, and then work together to get back to the top of the cliff. Once there, teams piece together their whole clue. Teams arrive at the task in the following order:

1- Dana/Matt
2- Sheri/Cole
3- Tyler/Korey

And teams complete the task in the following order:

1- Dana/Matt
2- Sheri/Cole
3- Tyler/Korey

Teams are now instructed to make their way to Grassini Family Vineyards to get their next clue. Teams arrive in the following order:

2- Sheri/Cole
3- Tyler/Korey

And teams get the fourteenth and final roadblock clue.

ROADBLOCK:

Who wants to roll out the barrels?

FINAL TASK:

Roadblockers must use the provided lids to identify the nine cities clued by the nine provided hashtags from clues along the race. Teams must then use the rest of the barrel lids to spell the name of those cities correctly. Once the hashtags are hanging in the correct order and the cities are spelled correctly, teams receive their next clue from the judge. For Reference:

1) #MuseoSoumaya – Mexico City
2) #WalledCity – Cartagena
3) #JetStream – Geneva
4) #MontBlanc – Chamonix
5) #12thCapital – Yerevan
6) #AncientWorld – Tbilisi
7) #Desert – Dubai
8) #TropicalParadise – Denpasar
9) #SiliconValleyofChina - Shenzhen

The following teammates take the Roadblock:

1- Dana – (Toyouke: “Ugh hashtags. But good for Dana for figuring it out right away weeks ago. She DESTROYED that challenge.”)
2- Cole
3- Korey

After much city spelling, teams complete the Roadblock in the following order:

1- Dana/Matt
2- Sheri/Cole

3- Tyler/Korey

18 cities, 10 countries, 27000 miles, Dana and Matt, you are the winners of The Amazing Race 28! As the string quartet plays the Amazing Race Theme Song, Matt says he’d rather be passionate than boring! And Tyler and Korey never stopped smiling. (Toyouke: “I feel like this season came down to who didn't screw up the first Roadblock. Which I don't really like but I don't know if anyone could have caught up on that last challenge. It's not what I wanted but I don't HATE it, I guess is what I'm trying to say. Actually Tyler and Korey lost when they left the airport because nothing changed after that. Well, except stupid running up stairs.”)
