TAR25, Recap Leg 9, 11/28/14

Welcome to Leg 9! Last time, on The Wide World of Greased Pole Racing, six teams raced from Sicily to Malta.  The teams hatched a plan to U-Turn the Cyclists, who are one of the strongest remaining teams.  Adam and Bethany use their Express Pass, putting them in first, and Tim and Te Jay slip up the pole too many times and are eliminated.  Who will be eliminated. . . next? (click for more)

Arrival at the pit stop last episode:
1st – Adam/Bethany, Team Sharknado, #SoulSurfers
2nd – Misti/Jim, Team Noodle Domination, #The Dentists
3rd – Kym/Alli, Team Nonstop, #TheCyclists
4th – Amy/Maya, Team Frizzle Twins, #SweetScientists
5th – Brooke/Robbie, Team LoriBolo2, #TheWrestlers

Fort Manoel, Manoel Island, Gzira, Malta

9:25 PM Adam/Bethany (1st)
Clue: Make your way a quarter of the way around the world to Singapore!  Flights are provided from Valetta to Paris, but you may choose to book your own flights, and you are on your own once you get to Paris.  Once you book your flight, you may not change it.  Once there, board the ferry to Pulau Ubin Island and run a mile to the coconut stand.  Drink the provided coconut to get your next clue.

CAUTION: DOUBLE U-TURN AHEAD

10:07 PM Misti/Jim (2nd)
10:50 PM Kym/Alli (3rd)
Amy/Maya (4th)
1:07 PM Brooke/Robbie (5th)

Teams make their way to a travel agent in the following order:

1- Adam/Bethany
2- Misti/Jim
3- Kym/Alli
4- Amy/Maya
5- Brooke/Robbie

The Surfers and the Dentists decide to go with the Paris flight and get a connecting flight to Singapore arriving at 6:40 am.  The Cyclists show up and reread the clue, get a better connection through Rome, and get a flight arriving at 6:00 am. (Toyouke: "And THAT'S why you don't have alliances and you DON'T depend on other teams.") Teams now make their way to the airport and get on their flights:

Flight 1, via Rome, arrives Singapore 6:00 am:
1) Kym/Alli
2) Amy/Maya
3) Brooke/Robbie

Flight 2, via Paris, arrives Singapore 6:40 am:
1) Adam/Bethany
2) Misti/Jim

Teams fly to Singapore using the Amazing Red and Blue Lines and arrive in the following order:

1- Amy/Maya
2- Brooke/Robbie
3- Kym/Alli
4- Adam/Bethany
5- Misti/Jim

Teams make their way to the ferry dock to head to Pulau Ubin Island.  They board the ferries in the following order:

1- Amy/Maya
2- Kym/Alli
3- Brooke/Robbie
4- Adam/Bethany
5- Misti/Jim

Teams arrive on the island and run the mile to the coconut stand.  They get their coconuts and received their clue in the following order:

1- Kym/Alli
2- Brooke/Robbie
3- Amy/Maya
4- Adam/Bethany
5- Misti/Jim

Kym and Alli open their clue and find. . . a Fast Forward!

FAST FORWARD:

Recall (if you can, since they show up rarely anymore) that a fast forward is a task that can be performed to allow one team to skip all remaining tasks and head directly to the pit stop.  However, each team may only use their fast forward power once on the race, so they must decide when it is more advantageous to use it.  In this, the first fast forward on this race, teams must travel to Sentosa Island and find the WaveHouse in which teams get on the Flow Rider and maintain a surfing position for two minutes.  Once complete, they get their next clue and skip all remaining tasks and travel directly to the Pit Stop.  If teams are unable to complete in one round, they must wait for all other teams to attempt before trying again.

Teams decide to go for the Fast Forward in the following order:

1- Kym/Alli
2- Adam/Bethany

So, the Cyclists attempt twice, and manage to figure out the balance thing.  The Surfers show up, and Adam, can’t get his balance.  So the cyclists attempt again, but can’t concentrate.  So on their second attempt, the surfers figure it out and win the Fast Forward.  They travel to the PIT STOP at Fullerton Pavillion.

Teams that don’t take the Fast Forward are instructed to travel on foot to the Observation Deck of the Marina Bay Sands Hotel to get their next clue.

Teams arrive on the fifty-seventh floor in the following order:

1- Amy/Maya
2- Brooke/Robbie
3- Misti/Jim
4- Kym/Alli

And teams get the seventh roadblock clue.

ROADBLOCK:

Who wants to be a funambulist?

In this roadblock, teams must walk a tightrope fifty-seven stories above the ground between towers.  Once the roadblocker gets the clue, they must return on the tightrope to their partner.

The following teammates take the Roadblock:

1- Maya
2- Brooke
3- Jim – who slips midway and has to start over.
4- Kym

After much funambulating, teams complete the Roadblock in the following order:

1- Amy/Maya
2- Brooke/Robbie
3- Misti/Jim
4- Kym/Alli

Teams are now instructed to make their way to Center Square at Raffles Place to find their next clue.  Teams arrive in the following order:

1- Amy/Maya – who give vague directions to . . .
2- Brooke/Robbie
3- Misti/Jim
4- Kym/Alli

Teams must locate the clue, which happens to be in the form of moving cluebox, which is a man with a red and yellow sign on his back.

And we get the Detour Clue.

DETOUR:
China Cups OR Chili Crabs
*China Cups: Teams make their way to Hong San See Temple and detox using a deep tissue massage, an exfoliating treatment, and fire cupping.  Once all treatments are complete, teams get their next clue.
*Chili Crabs: Teams make their way to Red House Restaurant at Robertson Quay.  Once there, teams must shell two pounds of cooked crab whilst ignoring distractions to get their next clue.

1- Amy/Maya choose China Cups – and discuss the U-Turn with the Wrestlers so that both the Surfers and the Cyclists get chosen.  The Scientists are going to take care of the Surfers, if the Wrestlers can take care of the Cyclists.  They agree. (Toyouke: "Should have U-Turned the dentists, although I know they still have the stupid Save.")
2- Brooke/Robbie choose China Cups
3- Misti/Jim choose Chili Crabs
4- Kym/Alli choose China Cups

Teams complete the detour in the following order:

1- Amy/Maya
2- Brooke/Robbie
3- Misti/Jim
4- Kym/Alli

Teams are now instructed to travel to Fort Canning and search the entrance to the fort for their next clue.  Teams arrive in the following order:

1- Amy/Maya
2- Brooke/Robbie
3- Misti/Jim
4- Kym/Alli

And we have found the U-Turn!

This is a Double U-Turn. Teams may choose to U-turn any team they wish (well, the team has to be behind them), but they may only use the U-Turn once during the race. If a team is U-turned, they must go back to the Detour choices and complete the Detour that they did not complete. This U-Turn is doubled, meaning two teams may U-Turn two other teams. This U-Turn is NOT blind.

1- Amy/Maya choose to U-Turn Adam/Bethany – as planned, but they already have the Fast Forward, so this is moot.
2- Brooke/Robbie choose not to U-Turn –
which was not as planned.
3- Misti/Jim choose not to U-Turn

4- Kym/Alli choose not to U-Turn

So a U-Turn is wasted, and no one has to go do any more Detours.

Anyway, teams get their clue in the following order:

1- Amy/Maya
2- Brooke/Robbie
3- Misti/Jim
4- Kym/Alli

Teams are now instructed to find their next clue at the Merlion Statue.  Problem is, there are five merlion monuments throughout the town, two in Merlion Park, and one each at Mount Faber, the Tourism Court, and on Sentosa Island.  The correct one is at Mount Faber, and teams find it in the following order:

1- Brooke/Robbie – after a visit to Merlion Park.  When asked by the Scientists if it is at Mount Faber, they say no.  And the Scientists believe them. (Toyouke: "NO ALLIANCES. RACE.")
2- Misti/Jim
3- Amy/Maya – who manage to go to all the merlion sites.  And then go back to Mount Faber.
4- Kym/Alli

Teams are now instructed to make their way to Fullerton Pavillion, the PIT STOP of the ninth leg of this racearoundtheworld.  The last team to arrive MAY be eliminated!

1- Adam/Bethany – who win a trip for two to Bali.
2- Brooke/Robbie
3- Misti/Jim
4- Amy/Maya
5- Kym/Alli

And Kym and Alli are. . . eliminated!  They know that they could have been final three, but sometimes it just doesn’t work out.

ORDER NOW:
1st – Adam/Bethany
2nd – Brooke/Robbie
3rd – Misti/Jim
4th – Amy/Maya

Next week: The Scientists figure out what the Wrestlers are up to.  And our oxen are broken. . .again!  Until next time!
