TAR 36, Recap Leg 8, 5/1/24

Welcome to Leg 8! Last time, on Let’s Just Scream At Each Other Until We Win, 7 teams raced to Montevideo, Uruguay. Vinny crushed at the Roadblock, but then he and Amber fought for most of the rest of the leg. Danny’s navigation paid off for him and his mom, and it led to a second place finish. Ricky and Cesar returned to the top of the pack, Juan and Shane stumbled due to Juan’s food poisoning, but it’s Sunny and Bizzy who had horrid navigation this week and are eliminated. Who will be eliminated. . . next? (click for more)

Arrival at the pit stop last episode:

1st – Ricky and Cesar, Team Dating Dudes

2nd – Angie and Danny, Team Family Education

3rd – Rod and Leticia, Team NFL Fitness

4th – Amber and Vinny, Team Dating Nurses

5th – Yvonne and Melissa, Dating Hikers

6th – Juan and Shane, Team Top Gun

Playa Malvín, Montevideo, Uruguay

Teams are transported by private plane via The Amazing Yellow Line from Uruguay overnight to Bridgetown, Barbados, where they will run the next leg. They depart from the Pit Start in fifteen-minute increments.

Chamberlain Bridge, Bridgetown, Barbados

Clue: Welcome to Bridgetown, Barbados! Drive yourselves in the provided topless jeeps to the neighborhood of Fairfield / Black Rock and find the intersection of Parkinson Road and Fairfield Road to get your next clue. NOTE: Your crew will be driving separately for this leg, be sure not to lose your crew.

First Departure 7:40 am

Ricky/Cesar (1st) – and they remind us that they want kids and marriage, so the prize money would help.

Angie/Danny (2nd) – and Angie is really nervous about the left-hand side driving today. Danny decides to ask the boyfriends for navigation help before they leave. (Toyouke: “The AUDACITY. No problem asking for help, but heaven forbid you tell anyone anything. I would have let Danny fail.”)

Second Departure 7:55 am

Rod/Leticia (3rd)

Amber/Vinny (4th) – Vinny decides that he’s going to just decide how he feels in terms of which direction to drive today. This sounds like a terrible idea. (Toyouke: “What happens when Vinny's "I'm navigating based on vibes" fails? You know he'd be an ass if Amber tried it. Also, props to the guy advertising the barber shop where they asked for directions.”)

Third Departure 8:10 am

Yvonne/Melissa (5th) – Melissa informs us that she and Yvonne have been dating 3 years and have yet to move in together.

Juan/Shane (6th) – who miss their wives.

So teams make their way to get their cars, get in and drive to the Fairfield / Black Rock neighborhood in the pouring rain, only to arrive in the following order:

1- Ricky/Cesar

2- Angie/Danny – who followed the boyfriends to get here. Danny: "I hate following people" (Toyouke: “I thought your directions were your secret weapon and you were amazing? This is why I said they're not going to win.”)

3- Yvonne/Melissa

4- Rod/Leticia

5- Juan/Shane

6- Amber/Vinny

When they rip open the clue, teams get the ninth roadblock.

ROADBLOCK:

Who wants to get into the swing of things?

In this roadblock, one team member must play Road Tennis, a game based on ping pong and pickleball, against a master player. Once the team member scores 11 points, they will get their next clue.

(Toyouke: “First of all, is the "talented local" a child and second, are they going to use increasingly ridiculous items instead of racquets?”)

The following teammates take the Roadblock:

1- Ricky

2- Angie - who used to coach tennis.

3- Yvonne – who has a standing bet with Melissa, who is the better tennis player, that if she ever wins, Melissa will buy her a steak dinner.

4- Leticia

5- Juan – “The only table tennis I’ve ever played involves 10 cups.”

6- Vinny – (Toyouke: “I know people are going to be like "Vinny is an ass because Amber was just trying to be supportive, and he told her to stop talking!" but honestly sometimes you don't want to hear it.”)

After much road tennis, teams complete the Roadblock in the following order:

1- Ricky/Cesar

2- Angie/Danny

3- Yvonne/Melissa

4- Rod/Leticia

5- Juan/Shane

6- Amber/Vinny

Teams are now instructed to drive themselves to Rihanna’s childhood home. Teams arrive and get their clues in the following order:

1- Ricky/Cesar

2- Angie/Danny – and Angie doesn’t know who Rihanna is, which prompts the appropriately gay reaction from Danny. (Toyouke: “This overreaction to Angie not knowing who Rhianna is, is so obnoxious. Stop being a camera whore. ALSO don't scoff and then fail to name a single one of her songs.”)

3- Yvonne/Melissa

4- Rod/Leticia

5- Amber/Vinny

6- Juan/Shane

Teams are now instructed to drive themselves to Long Bay Beach in Christ Church Parish and search for their next clue. Teams arrive in the following order:

1- Ricky/Cesar

2- Yvonne/Melissa

3- Amber/Vinny

4- Rod/Leticia

5- Angie/Danny – who actually arrive at the beach second but are told to wait in their vehicle until their crew arrives, whom they lost when Angie made an illegal turn in a roundabout. (Toyouke: “OK so first of all, the minute the crew turned the wrong way they should have pulled over. But they're still driving. Also, Danny, WE GET IT. Stop narrating like we're all morons who don't understand how the race works. No one else lost their crew. No one ever loses their crew. I wonder if the producers just gave the crew directions. Or did they have to navigate on their own?”)

6- Juan/Shane

Teams open their clues and we get the ninth Detour Clue.

DETOUR:

Seaweed Clearing OR Fish Pot Building

*Seaweed Clearing: Teams walk to the beach, choose a container to fill and then make their way to the other side of the beach with their rakes and wheelbarrow to clean seaweed. Once the blue barrel is completely full, the environmentalist will give them their next clue.

*Fish Pot Building: Teams walk to the beach and construct a fish trap out of tamarind sticks, wire mesh, and pieces of thin wire to tie it together. If constructed properly, the fisherman will give them their next clue.

Teams arrive at their Detour option in the following order:

1- Ricky/Cesar choose Fish Pot Building – after they initially thought they were going to Seaweed Clearing.

2- Yvonne/Melissa choose Fish Pot Building – after they initially thought they were going to Seaweed Clearing

3- Amber/Vinny choose Fish Pot Building

4- Rod/Leticia choose Fish Pot Building

5- Angie/Danny choose Fish Pot Building

6- Juan/Shane choose Seaweed Clearing – after they realize everyone else is doing the other Detour option, and they may be able to make up time. (Toyouke: “See that strategy is great if you are fit enough.”)

Much fish pot building and seaweed clearing ensues. So, teams complete the detour in the following order:

1- Ricky/Cesar

2- Juan/Shane

3- Amber/Vinny

4- Yvonne/Melissa

5- Rod/Leticia – who kept forgetting their corner supports. (Toyouke: “Don't they have an example?”)

6- Angie/Danny

Teams are now handed a photo of the location they must drive themselves to, Hastings Rocks, the PIT STOP of the eighth leg of this racearoundtheworld. The last team to arrive WILL be eliminated!

1- Ricky/Cesar – who win $7500 each.

2- Juan/Shane

3- Amber/Vinny

4- Yvonne/Melissa

5- Rod/Leticia – who managed to get their car stuck on their way to the Pit Stop. (Toyouke: “Honestly surprised Rod and Leticia didn't get a penalty for tearing up someone's yard.”)

6- Angie/Danny

And Angie and Danny are eliminated. Angie: “We’ve been Philiminated!” Danny says this experience was everything he could ever dream of. Angie is happy she just has a million dollar kid. (Toyouke: "I'd like to know how the crew, in a van with a local driver, in contact with production who can supposedly give them directions, on an island measuring 21 miles by 14 miles, took over an hour to arrive at the Detour.")

ORDER NOW:

1st – Ricky/Cesar

2nd – Juan/Shane

3rd – Amber/Vinny

4th – Yvonne/Melissa

5th – Rod/Leticia

Next week: Dominican Republic! We get to do one of those cave spelunking adventures, and Melissa struggles on a rune puzzle. Vinny tried his hand at tree climbing and fails miserably. And Rod plays to play baseball. Until next time!
