Project Runway 8/27/26--"Designing with the Stars" summary

Previously on “Project Runway”: for no reason, some designers from last season showed up and were “competing” against this season's designers for the unconventional materials challenge. Everything was old tech. There was a bunch of stupid drama that I'm not talking about, and then Bi did well and Bryan didn't, and everyone was salty about how Bryan had immunity. But they didn't even say who won before the show ended. (click for more)

Everyone was mad about Bryan because the deal was that if the current season's team lost, someone would be eliminated, but if they won, everyone would be safe. And because Bryan has immunity, he could send down some bullshit and not be in any danger. Say, a pile of cables and some plastic wrapped in duct tape. Jeffrey was the other person in the bottom and he's mad he might go home. I thought they'd cast Jeffrey only for drama, but he's actually a good leader and really helpful to his team.

Anyway, season 22 wins so all of that drama was for nothing. The only good thing is Joseph is very pleased with himself because fuck season 21. Jeffrey is in tears, and Law says that maybe all the time he spent helping his team helped his team win, so maybe that was the right choice. Bryan's being pissy about it in confessional. The winner of the challenge and $20,000 is Bi. Listen at least this unconventional challenge winner was actually good and not a flattened soccer ball. Bi tears up and then immediately says “these are fake tears.” Ha! He's thrilled to win an iconic Project Runway challenge.

In the Scrap Bin everyone celebrates and there's a great shot of people standing around Bi and Bryan sulking on the couch. It turns out that even though every confessional from Bryan has been him bitching about how Bi sucks, Bryan believes that the one time he stood up for Bi, basically saved Bi's ass, and now that Bryan got attacked, Bi didn't say anything. You've done nothing but shit on Bi to his face, and also how would he know you stood up for him that time, and also also, everyone thought you were full of shit because you'd spent so much time complaining about Bi. So it didn't work.

Everyone goes back to the runway where there is a desk for Heidi and Christian. It's a collab with Dancing with the Stars. Sure. Actually, you know what? Having to design functional dance outfits is a good challenge. Julianne Hough comes out to also sit at the desk. She's there because Christian is leaving, so she's the mentor today. OK I'm not mad about this. You have one day to make an outfit inspired by a particular dance style, modeled by a DWTS pro. Then this show RUINS it by saying the order they get to pick their style in, will be chosen by their “moves”. So this is like a Drag Race mini challenge where everyone has to make a fool of themselves and then the winner is arbitrary. Mostly so they can score them like they do on DWTS.

This is extremely cringe from everyone. The chyron labels everyone's dance style in an extremely rude way. I catch Bryan laughing at Bi but in a way that implies he's entertained and not mocking this person he's wasted so much time hating. Joseph does the Floss which entertains me to no end. Jeffrey gets a perfect score but are you surprised? He picks salsa. Naheim takes jazz, and this style gets a male pro, so that answers that question. I think there are photos of who the pros are, so if you really didn't want to make menswear you would know ahead of time who not to take. I think. From what I can see, it's four men and three women, which is a little surprising. Anna takes samba, Bryan takes waltz, and these two are the other two women aside from Jeffrey. So Naheim, Bi (paso doble), Joseph (jive), and Jude (quickstep) all have male pros. Oh and it's double elimination because no one went home last week. Oh and no one has immunity, right? Good.

$650 at Mood. Bi confirms there is no more immunity. Anna buys a ton of fringe, and silk chiffon, which she's only used once before.

They have nine hours to work. Bryan claims to still be “numb” from the dumbass argument yesterday and how no one supported him. But he won't let it affect his work. We just all have to listen to him bitch in confessional. Anna says “hey” in a neutral fashion and is ignored. Naheim feels that Jeffrey asked a legit question (“why didn't you tell the judges that dress was all tape?”) and got full aggression, so now they've seen Bryan's “true colors”. Those true colors include how Bryan claims he saw everyone talking about him, except for the part where I don't think he was close enough to hear them, and he's not speaking to anyone for another designer to snitch. I mean they were talking about him, but he just saw people talking and assumed he was the topic of conversation.

Time for Julianne to show up. I'm not mad about it because I'm hoping she has useful advice on what you need to do to make a successful dance costume. Bi wanted sexy, which means some red and a matador-based design. Bryan for some reason takes his man bun down as Julianne approaches. Why though. He starts talking about lux and haute couture. Baby pink and gray and a ton of ruffles. Julianne claims to get it and Bryan throws himself on her. I don't buy anything he says or does anymore. Jeffrey is making the best stank faces.

Anyway now it's time for model fitting and everyone making an entrance. Bi is horny about it. Joseph has made a Joseph McRae coat and the pro says jive is about movement and energy and it's loud. So he thinks Joseph's usual style works. Joseph actually is doing an Aaron move and he says he's inspired by the African-American background of jive. Jeffrey has salsa and he's doing old school West Side Story. Julianne points out where to put a dart in the top. They ask his pro about it, and she says that he is trying to be so classic it might be too safe. The producers ask if she would wear it, and she pauses too long. Jude says a lot of quickstep pros wear coats with tails, and that's not his thing, so he's trying to keep that movement but not have actual coattails. So his suit will have pleated panels for volume and I guess movement. Anna has a bunch of “feathers” made out of that silk, and if she can pull it off it sounds like everyone thinks it'll be amazing. If she can finish it. Bi's pants fit perfectly. He's still horny about it.

OK they show Bryan's look and I had to rewind and pause because, y'all. It looks like a gray sheath dress that goes down at least to her ankles. A narrow skirt. Then there are giant ruffles all down the side, also in gray, and one side of her torso is a giant baby pink ruffle. Like we are talking 80's prom dress size of ruffles. She's drowning in it because the dress comes all the way up to her throat and there is no skin showing. Maybe her arms. Bryan interviews that he knows the judges will appreciate how much time he spent on these ruffles. Will they? They look like a bed skirt. Also this is not a dance outfit. Naheim has some cool pants and his pro likes it. It's asymmetrical because jazz is unpredictable. The theme is “this guy goes into a speakeasy and he's just like, super hot.”

Runway Day. Jeffrey points out in confessional that Bryan has made the same gown he did for the animal challenge: a princess-seamed long narrow gown with a giant ruffle. And the judges hated it then. Christian appears, to reveal he's had a Save this whole time. Huh. Anyway, also we discover that at the bottom of Bryan's dress is about six inches of a sheer gray chiffon, just flat, hanging at the bottom of the skirt. I don't know. It feels like Christian is just here to tell everyone the problems with their looks, now that there's an hour left to work. Naheim might change his pants. Christian hates Bi's belt for some reason. At the last minute he takes the sash off and puts on a regular belt.

Julianne is here but not judging. Instead we have Law, Nina (thank God), and Niecy Nash. Anna: a halter crop top and long skirt in what I think she said was a floral pattern but it just kind of looks like blobs. There's a band of fabric right under her boobs, and at the top of this band is a row of black feathers, like fringe. The skirt seems narrow, but from the knee down it is covered in black fabric “feathers”, so it has a ton of movement. Bi: a red outfit, pants, tank top, and a cropped bolero jacket. There was a purple sash, but Christian hated it so it's gone. But it's too bad, because that would have broken up the red. It's not that exciting but it fits well and he looks hot.

Bryan: it's an ankle length gray sheath dress, with a giant gray ruffle all down one side and wrapping around the skirt. On the other side of the torso, it's a matching baby pink ruffle. These ruffles are too big and they swallow her face. When you look at the back, it looks like he's put rows of ruffles and it looks so lumpy. Naheim: a black and gray jacket, in what looks like leather, with an asymmetrical lapel. Like it fastens along one side of his torso, and there's a lapel, and then the hem doesn't line up. The pants are a pinstripe, with slits down the front of each leg. They were all the way open but he's tacked some stitches so they don't gape. Also there are weird straps that are attached at one end just under each hip on the sides, and then the ends are free. The pants are pretty wide but they seem to fit well.

Jeffrey: a red top and skirt. The top is off the shoulder, with a sweetheart neckline and those sleeves that are just bands of fabric that go around her biceps. It's cropped a little bit, and then the skirt is tight to just under her butt, and then a ton of ruffles, ending at the knee. Then covering her entire upper body, everywhere the red top doesn't cover, is a sheer fabric that's black with solid red polka dots. The sleeves are long and fitted to the wrist, and then it's a long cascade of fabric like a skirt from her wrists down past her knees if her hands are at her sides. I think there is either a scarf or a swag of the polka dotted fabric that connects her hands in the back. It's long, so you can't see it from the front because it doesn't seem to keep her hands from moving. Jeffrey reveals the ruffles in the skirt are 20 layers in total. Oh, when she is almost off the runway, she removes the connected thing so her hands aren't actually attached to each other.

Jude: a white tuxedo coat with no shirt. It fastens at one side, not down the center, but otherwise it doesn't look that different. The pants are black, but very wide legged. Like palazzo pants. As the pro spins, you can see that the back of the jacket, from right where the bra strap would be on a woman, it's cut into strips like a carwash skirt. If he's not spinning, it doesn't look like it's obviously cut up. Like maybe it's just got extra pleats or something. Joseph: I have to laugh because he gave this guy a Joseph hat too. Anyway, it's a long leather coat with a very tall collar that stands up. The coat has the usual Joseph volume. Under this is a shirt in in browns and greens. It's not camouflage but it has that feel to it. This is open to the waist. Then olive green pants, with a high waist and a wide leg. It looks like a zoot suit. The coat is like an emerald color.

The producers keep putting in interviews from Bryan about how there is no way he is going home and he can't wait to be rid of some of these people. I'm tired of hearing from him. Anna and Jude are the top two. Bi is safe. Anna's top has corset lacing in the back, so I guess it's adjustable? Gives more support? The fabric was the right choice and the shredding that creates the feathers really works. The pro loves it. Jude shows the judges how his pants aren't really wide-legged pants so much as they are pleated on the sides so you can watch how his legs move. Nina says she herself would wear this outfit. That says something, that Jude made an outfit that the whole judging panel, men and women, want to wear. That's true. Law is kind of horny about Jude's male model and Niecy gives him shit about it. The winner is Jude. Poor Anna hasn't won yet, but Jude did a great job.

Naheim's pants are too much for Law. He says he doesn't understand any of it. It's an asymmetrical jacket. The pants, fine, they are weird, but come on. Nina thinks it doesn't look well made, but Niecy can see that he was going somewhere. Heidi loves it so I guess she's the only one. Bryan starts talking about Vienna and volume and the future. She's drowning in ruffles. Too many things and this pro is too petite to carry the size of these ruffles. The pro says a bunch of stuff that sounds like she hates it but doesn't want to come out and say so for fear of looking like a bitch.

Joseph talks about World War II and some street style. Law straight up says he doesn't think Joseph is here to win the show, he's just here to sell the clothes he already makes. That's what everyone is here for. Get real for a second. If he didn't make a Joseph outfit you'd complain you don't see him in the outfit. Law thinks other people are really pushing themselves. Debatable, and then we have to have a shot of Bryan nodding vigorously as if his pushing himself didn't result in his being on the bottom. Joseph says in interview that removing himself from his clothes wouldn't be an evolution, which is a good point. The pants are great but Law doesn't think he's going to dance the jive in them. It's costumey. Niecy loves it, and the inside of the jacket is lined in some pinstripes. Heidi likes it too, so that's a good sign. He takes off the jacket, and suddenly Law loves it. Whatever. Jeffrey thinks this isn't costumey, but the judges think it's too literal. Nina says she's the dancing woman emoji. The construction is perfect but Law thinks it's a tacky outfit.

Naheim is in. Yay! Bryan is out. Finally. Now I don't have to listen to his confessionals. He's still confused about how his dress sucked. Joseph says this is the first time he's ever been in the bottom. I'm sad no matter what. Joseph is in. Aww. Jeffrey is already crying. Now Law is like “call me I want to work with you”. Sure. Then he does a death drop because of course he did. Hee. Jeffrey is very sad to be out. Christian comes in to say it's hard to see them both go. Emphasis on “both”. Don't fuck with me, show. Christian says he did choose to save one person, and this is cruel. Like, he'll save one person, and the other person will have to know they could be back in but Christian didn't think they were good enough. That's mean no matter who he picks. Of course a cliffhanger.
