Previously on “Project Runway:” Chloe and Andriy were eliminated. Chloe was pretty resigned, but Andriy was pissed. The challenge was to have head-to-head battles based on animals, because the Humane Society is the sponsor. I mean I guess so. The models were random reality stars, and Veejay. Then one of them bailed last minute, so they had Chloe do it. She looked great, to be honest, but it sucked for those two designers who had to remake the garments at the last minute for a model who is a different size. Oh and then the judges voted on who wins the head-to-heads because of drama, I guess. Jude won, which is fine. The bottom designers were Bryan, Aaron, and Bi. (click for more)
Bi is in. He leaves but can't resist a “bye bitch” to Bryan on the way out. Aaron wasn't able to make what he wanted because of the model change. Bryan of course feels he shouldn't be up here at all because he's amazing. He also reaches over and taps Aaron on the arm so they can hold hands. It just felt demanding is all. Bryan is in. That tracks. Aaron is low drama. Law says he wants to hang out and talk fashion, which is rich because 30 seconds ago he was like, you're not modern enough. Aaron is fine because they always admitted he knew his history and background of things, and he's proud of this. Christian appears to the Scrap Bin and promises a “historic” challenge. Whatever.
Heidi is here by herself, without Christian but with the button bag. She says something about thinking outside the box. “Or should I say, off the roll?” and she's holding a roll of paper towels. I literally had to pause the tape to put my hands to my temples and take deep breaths. Anyway, paper towel challenge because [product placement] paper towels are “soft and durable like cloth”. You have to make a look for a night on the town, but it has to include “a separate” made out of paper towels. Wait, so you don't have to make your whole look out of paper towels? What the fuck is that!? Heidi says that there are “uncut” rolls of paper towels, and regular consumer rolls. OK so they ARE making the whole look out of paper towels? No, because they're getting $300 for fabric. OK so I think the challenge is that you have to make separates, or at least an outfit with more than one piece, and one piece has to be made from paper towels. But not the whole outfit if you don't want. It's actually a two day challenge, so they can dye paper towels today and everything can dry. Hilariously with all the sponsoring this season, no one got Rit dye to give them anything so all the dye bottles are covered. Winner gets immunity and $20,000. Everyone freaks out about the money and having two days. I don't think twist alert because of the dye. OK but this better not be the one unconventional materials challenge.
They seem to have one hour today to dye things. Elizabeth says she's amazing at textile design so this is hers to win. Naheim is trying to do a tromp-l'oeil thing, where he's dyeing the paper towels to look like denim. Anna says the only thing she's done like this was make a dress out of newspaper and that took her two months. Anna your chyron literally says “unconventional materials”. Bi and Bryan snipe at each other and it's not even funny. Like, I would love for their shade to be entertaining.
In the morning the chyron says “Design Day 1 of 2.” They have 7 hours today. Some random PA carries Christian into the workroom in a bridal carry. Excuse me who is this!?! Christian immediately yells at Anna for “big black blobs”, because it looks like she just dyed the paper towels black. She wants to do hand-knitting, which is where you get like, giant yarn or string and make big bulky clothing or scarves or whatever, using your hands instead of knitting needles. Maybe too crafty looking? Christian is skeptical, and reminds her that if she admits to the judges she always does unconventional materials, that's it. That will be the end for her. Elizabeth has somehow used lace fabric from Mood as a stencil, to spray paint the pattern onto the paper towels. Christian loves it. Joseph is salty that Law was a jerk to him at the last challenge, so he's back to volume. A big coat in upholstery fabric and a dress in the paper towels. Christian is like, oh but not the coat in paper towels, huh? Just saying. The issue is that Joseph's giant coats are so huge that paper may not be structurally sound. Like you need thick fabric to support that volume. But he does big upholstery coats all the time. I think Joseph is thinking about doing what he wants and never mind the judges.
Jeffrey has cut ruffles, like a million ruffles. Luckily Christian loves it. There won't be any fabric in it. Bryan starts talking about cocoa leaves, and he does have several shades of green that look good together. It's maybe pretty but not interesting. Bryan's first looks were loud and now they're getting simplified. Bobby has managed to make a striped print on her paper towels. It's a simple silhouette because the print is going to do the work. Naheim's paper towels really do look like denim. They at the least look like real fabric. Christian asks if this is fancy enough for a night on the town, and then says “my girls wouldn't run around in this.” This feels racist. Naheim is just like “yeah your girls wouldn't because my girl is young hot and lit.” But he says it in confessional.
Anna is discovering it takes her a whole hour to do maybe two rows of the hand knitting, so she probably can't make a whole top. Bryan's dress unfortunately looks like lettuce leaves, because of the green and the fact that he's taking individual paper towels and making ruffles on one shoulder. At first it was just Bi making comments, so I wasn't going to pay attention, but then Anna does tell Bryan to his face that it looks “icebergy”. Joseph is spiraling, because of what Christian said. But he's also looking around and seeing the number of people who don't have any fabric at all in their looks. So he's worried if he makes a giant fabric jacket, that's going to be a problem. So he starts working with the paper towels and it's not going well. It looks like paper. Like, thick handmade paper. He's not in a good space mentally.
Day 2. It looks like they brought the models in early for once. Nine hours left. Jude has some pinstripe wool pants but Christian says they're so boring. At least he can tailor, and he has immunity. Bi has put masking tape all over his model, he says so he can make a corset. I think by removing the tape and using that as a base? His model is wearing pants that are made out of the paper towels, and Christian gasps that he didn't even notice. They do look amazing. Joseph shows Christian his paper towel jacket, which sucks, and now there's like a halter top that sucks. Christian freaks out and accuses him of giving up. Naheim does not get any comments about his look being too casual, but instead praise about how much like fabric it looks. But the pants aren't made yet. Anna doesn't have anything to put on her model. She's bailed on the knitting but she doesn't seem to have come up with anything else. So now she's using jersey. As the “unconventional materials” designer. It's not looking good, especially when most other people have complete paper towel looks with no fabric at all. Several other people get praise, and then it looks like Joseph has come up with something that Christian likes. With a cool shape. Bryan has fixed his design so it's not lettuce. Christian tells him there's competition so he needs to get to it.
Runway Day. They get three hours to get things done today. Christian brings in two women who I guess have a podcast called “Giggly Squad” which is famous but I've never heard of it. One of them has stupid sunglasses. Why are they here? It's runway day and unless they are judging I don't see the point. I guess they gave Bi some advice on what shoes to use. Then they leave because they're not even guest judges. Why. Backstage with like two or three minutes to go, suddenly everyone is freaking out and frantically working. As the models walk from the workroom to the runway, everything is ripping.
For some reason this isn't the regular runway, this is an elevated runway in a brick building with a ton of natural light. Good, because the lighting on the usual runway is garbage. Nina is gone again, and the guest judge is designer Willy Chavarria. And Christian is here. Well, at least we have actual designers. Christian seems to be here to tell the judges which items are cloth and which are paper towels.
Elizabeth: short red dress with a high collar. It looks like a basic sleeveless dress with a slightly full skirt that hits about mid-thigh, in a red and black. From a distance you can't see that the print is the lace stencil, it just looks mottled. But there are panels and seams and everything. It does seem pretty short, and the dress tore at the closure at the last second, but it's all paper towels. Bi: black pants and black tank top. The tank top is shiny, so I'm assuming it's not paper towels, but it's a basic tank with maybe some buckles across the front. The pants are wide legged black pants, but they are paper towels and they fit perfectly. Actually Christian tells them it's all paper towels, so I guess it's a paper tank with maybe some belts from the accessory wall. No one believes the pants aren't fabric.
Bobby: shapeless dress in a print. So it's one of those dresses that has a band across her chest, above her boobs, and then the dress just hangs down from that with no shape, and ends at mid-thigh. There is also a scarf, just wrapped around her neck and tied like you would tie a scarf in the winter. The print is some multicolored vertical marks, shading into black at the bottom of the hem. The back is asymmetrical for some reason, the paper towels covering all of one side, and then the other side has black that might be her bra or maybe some fabric? It's a cute print but it does feel like she wrapped fabric around her body and gave her a scarf and then called it a day.
Bryan: long gown in different shades of green. It looks like he cut long rectangles, pleated them lengthwise, and then stitched them together. There's one across her torso, from one hip to the opposite shoulder and then hanging down loose like a scarf, and two or three going diagonally from just under her bra to her hip, and then loose to make a skirt. I'm not describing it well but it does look cool and like fabric. The bottom of one of the panels is jacked up, because it tore and Bryan tried to cut a slit in it or something. But it no longer looks like lettuce. Joseph: purple top and teal shorts. The shorts are high waisted and kind of full, but not so much that they look like a skirt. They're cut pretty high. The top is like a jacket, a V neck and a big button in front, and long sleeves. Big shoulders and the sleeves look thick. Like they're twice as long as they need to be but they're pushed up on her arm so it's a thick tube of fabric. OK only the jacket is paper towels.
Jude: red jacket with long sleeves. I don't think the model has a shirt on under this, but it does look like a red suede jacket with round buttons and a popped collar. It's a little bit cropped. The pants are black pants that look like basic tight pants, but then there's a strip or loop of fabric from her hip to her ankle. So as she walks, the loop moves like a skirt would. Those are pinstriped, and I think those are wool. Naheim: the top is a jacket with a wide waistband and long sleeves, and a zipper. It looks like a fashion baseball jacket, complete with cuffs. The cuffs and the waistband look like elastic, and the whole thing looks like it's made out of denim. There's a short asymmetrical skirt made out of vertical panels. Remember Leanne's petals? That's kind of what it reminds me of. This also looks like denim, and the same for the pants, which look like flared jeans.
Anna: black and white body-con dress. So from the top of the bodice, just above her boobs, to right under her hips, the dress is fitted and has vertical pleats. The front center panel is white, and it's not a rectangle, but it narrows at her waist. Covering her boobs it looks like loose black fabric, like you draped a scarf around her neck and sewed the ends to the dress. I'm sure it's paper towels. There's a short black ruffle at the hem of the skirt. The center back panel is also white with corset lacing. Jeffrey: white crop top and pants. The crop top ends just under her bra, with long sleeves, and the pants are wide legged. Across her collarbone and down each arm are white ruffles edged in gray. There are more ruffles down the outside of each leg. The bottom of the crop top and the hem of the pants are solid charcoal. You can see a little underboob, and then there is lacing in the back, less corset looking and more shoelace looking.
So now we relocate to the regular runway for no reason. Before we can get the judging overwith, Heidi demands everyone say who they are the least impressed with. UUUUGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHH. Elizabeth has to go first and she's not thrilled, but she says Joseph. Bi acts like he can get away with saying his biggest competition is himself. You've been harping on Bryan constantly, don't chicken out now. The judges call him out so he also says Joseph. Interesting. Basically once Elizabeth said Joseph, then everyone just said Joseph to go along with the crowd. Joseph says Elizabeth, and he admits it's because she's the first person who said his name. Jude bucks the trend and says Bryan. Anna wants to say herself, which is insane. Heidi confirms she's saying she herself is the weakest, and then Law says if she thinks she's the weakest, she should just walk off the stage and leave right now. He has a point, but then she tears up and he's a jackass about that. At least the guest judge says 80% of the game is selling yourself, so you can never say you're the weakest. Finally she says Bobby. When Jeffrey says Joseph, Joseph points out to everyone he has the most wins. True. Law asks him how he feels, because this is kind of what happened last season, and Joseph basically says that he's worked to please others for too long, and now he's going to be himself because he's worked hard to get there. Law gets pissy, but if you don't want it to be the Joseph McRae show, then don't ask him follow-up questions. Basically Law thinks that if the majority of people think he's the weakest, then he must be, because he's the common denominator. You can't ask someone to defend themselves and then complain they're talking about themselves.
Joseph and Jude are safe. So I guess all of that was because Law needed to attack Joseph for whatever reason. Bobby, Elizabeth, and Anna are the bottom three. They all head to the Scrap Bin and Elizabeth freaks out. Bi's pants are perfect, and they are simple which is harder to do. The whole outfit is amazing. Bryan's dress has great movement and draping. Law hates the pleats because he's being a brat today. Tyra and Law argue which is fun because I'm fine with him arguing with Tyra instead of being an ass to designers for no reason. Then because Law talked too much we don't even finish judging before the episode ends.
