Project Runway 8/13/26--"The Devil's in the Details" summary

Previously on “Project Runway:” Aaron went home because no one will get rid of the drama potential of Bi and Bryan. The challenge was to make clothes out of paper towels. Because of reasons. This better not be the only unconventional materials challenge. Anyway, most people managed to make things that looked like cloth, until they walked to the runway and stuff started tearing. For judging, everyone had to say who they were the least impressed with, and most people said Joseph because I think once someone puts up a name everyone just goes with it. Law is a dick about it, because he doesn't like Joseph but Joseph's designs haven't been poor enough to put him in the bottom. Bi and Bryan were in the top, along with Naheim and Jeffrey, and Bobby, Elizabeth, and Anna were in the bottom. But we don't find out anything else because Law and Tyra had to have a fight about nothing. (click for more)

The consensus on the internet is that if you hate the cliffhanger endings, you can go to Wikipedia to see who gets eliminated. I hate them too, but I also can't even dredge up the effort to go look.

So for no reason, since Law is being a diva, it means that Bi and Bryan are out of the running for the win and prize money from the paper towel company. Because Tyra and Law disagree on which one of them has a better look and they're being unprofessional. The judges don't have to agree, in fact it's nice when they don't. But Law always has the attitude that if you don't agree with him you're a moron. So Naheim and Jeffrey are left, I guess because they both had all positive critiques? Back in the Scrap Bin, Bi tries to apologize to Joseph, who I think is trying to be cool about it. Bryan gets on Joseph and straight up tells him his work isn't good enough. Who cares. Weirdly Joseph gets motivational about it, and says every day IS the Joseph McRae show, and every day Bryan should get up and it should be the Bryan show, because “only you can be the biggest person in your story.” I don't hate that. Joseph isn't budging so Bryan does that thing where you start shit and then when you're losing you say you're over it.

Naheim made his entire outfit out of the paper towels. They can't tell it's not denim and it looks great. Jeffrey had ruffles and the dye job is a tiny bit uneven so it kind of does look like a paper towel that soaked up some dark liquid. He also used the fact that paper towels are light to create movement. The winner is Naheim. Nice. He gets immunity and $20,000.

When Naheim and Jeffrey get back to the Scrap Bin, everyone cheers and Naheim runs around. He says to pop the bottle right now, and then a producers asks where Elizabeth is. I guess because it's time for the bottom three to go out. She is hiding backstage somewhere, saying she doesn't know if she can talk right now. Like she can't even go back out to the runway. She's panicking and ready to quit because she doesn't want to walk back out there. But she does.

Anna's look for Liris is black and white and looks like a sexy maid costume. At least she fitted it properly. Elizabeth made a print, which was good, but the closure ripped at the last second so it looks terrible. Also the hemline is uneven, and not on purpose. Bobby has a good print and dye job, but then it's ankle booties that suck. Plus the scarf around her neck. Tyra does at least like the dye job.

Anna is in. Elizabeth is out. So Bobby is in. Now Elizabeth is saying it sucks to be going home and Anna and Bobby used fabric in their looks and Elizabeth's was all paper towels. I mean she was just ready to quit like an hour ago. Whatever. That was nearly nine minutes of this episode, spent in dealing with the last episode.

Heidi and Christian say something about “fancy”. They talk about “The Devil Wears Prada 2” and the premiere red carpet. Did they get one of the stars of the movie to agree to wear a gown designed by one of these people? Fat chance, no one will be associated with this show except Heidi. So it's time for the “design for Heidi” challenge. I'm not that mad about it because that is a classic challenge. Oh I guess Anne Hathaway agreed to record a video message, but not to actually wear anything from this show. Smart. She doesn't say anything interesting. They have $700 and one day. Heidi says she wishes they had two days, which is ridiculous because she's a producer and can give them two days. Come on.

Mood is fun and people have ideas. I will reserve judgment because plans will change. They get 12 hours to work. It's tense in the workroom because of the shenanigans on the runway yesterday, with making everyone say who sucks. Jeffrey at least admits Joseph does good work. He just thinks it's the same work every challenge. Joseph knows everyone put his name down, but he's convinced it might be because they're threatened. Jude finds out he doesn't have the fabric he picked out for his corset. That sucks. Jude has to go begging, and Bryan says he has extra. Jude feels extra guilty because he didn't name Joseph as the weakest, he named Bryan. Bryan claims to be one of those people who helps their competitors so they can beat the best.

Christian Time! Also Molly Rogers, who is the costume designer for the film. Nice. She looks amazing. Jeffrey is using his fabric from home, which is pink sequins. Christian and Molly love it. He's got an asymmetrical corset and a lot of hand sewing to do. He's so used to making gowns for Drag Race and also making sure there's a corset and it's shaped right. Joseph has chosen “cerulean blue” and huge sleeves. A shirt dress with giant buttons. Christian doesn't hate the idea in general, but Heidi wants to look hot. That's fair. Heidi isn't playful. Naheim has red silk and fur trim. He's only ever made two gowns in his life, but he has immunity. Christian also points out it's Georgette silk, which I guess is extremely difficult to sew, and all the trim is a lot of work. So even if it was something Heidi would wear, he might not be able to pull it off.

Anna says “sheer lace dress” so they love it. She's bought some extra tulle or something in case the lace is too sheer, and both Molly and Christian tell her Heidi will want it to be sheer and she'll go naked because she can. Yeah Heidi is not that classy. Molly is complaining no one is ready. Bi doesn't have a lot but he gets “clean edit”. Jude is doing some tailoring and tuxedo elements, to no one's surprise. In confessional he says he'd love to make a red carpet look for his girlfriend, and the chyron ticks over to “off the market”. There are some disappointed people on the internet. (Don't get me wrong Jude is cute but I like Naheim) Bobby has both a corset and a scarf, with both an olive green and print only on the bust. Heidi likes a print but also a print all over. Now Bobby has to make sure she can sew it.

Bryan's dress form has triangles on it. No dress, just cut-outs that sort of look like abstract butterflies, pinned directly onto the form. I don't know. He's calling them petals, and then he's going to pin them to a black tea-length dress. Molly loves the green fabric he's cut the triangles out of, and I think they basically tell him to make the dress out of that and not black.

Molly leaves, and then Christian is like, oh I have an announcement. The winner gets the following prizes: immunity, Heidi will wear your dress on the red carpet (I'm sure edited so much as to be unrecognizable), and you can pick who is in the bottom three this week. Dumb. Now I gotta listen to this strategery. Cue several interviews of people convinced they are going to win and get revenge on their haters.

Model fitting. Naheim has nothing, because he tried to sew the trim to the silk and it failed miserably. Christian is like, oh was I right? How shocking. Naheim admits Christian was right. Bobby is trying to fit the bust on her strapless gown, and Christian points out exactly where she needs to put boning so it won't flop over. Or she could put a tiny spaghetti strap. Bobby is not used to eveningwear. Bryan is pleating again, I think, and that's what Law hated about his last gown. That's what he and Tyra had their dumb fight about. Several interviews about how people are going to make sure their enemies are in the bottom. Christian leaves them with one hour left in the day.

Runway Day. Naheim says he has nothing. Like he is cutting fabric and they have three hours. His look is going to be chopped, and the chyron is helpful: “chopped = ugly”. I already knew that and I think I'm older than all these people so maybe not knowledge to be proud of. Jude has a slit in the skirt, but Christian tells him it's in a weird place. Although it's kind of too late. Bobby says everything has gone wrong. She cut her fabric wrong, it's not draping properly, now the corset is covered up, the hem is jacked. And it needs to be pressed. She's pushing herself but apparently she knows her construction is poor. Naheim is at the point where he is making sure his model is not naked, but that's about all he's able to do.

Guest judge is Nina Dobrev. Is Nina Dobrev in “The Devil Wears Prada 2”? No, so why. Also Winnie Harlow instead of Tyra. Still no Nina. Bi: it's a strapless gown with a basic silhouette, but the fabric is almost completely sheer. There are vertical lines of sequins or rhinestones, and the skirt is one layer of this fabric. The bodice is maybe lined , because it looks like the lining is just barely off from her skin tone. Then there is a cape or a jacket on her shoulders, with shoulder pads, that covers the front of her shoulders and then hangs down her back. I think it's a cape. Jude: black strapless gown with a sweetheart neckline. It's just a basic black gown with a corset, and a slit in the skirt. Instead of seeing her leg, the opening shows a black beaded sheer fabric. I wondered if it was a panel or a whole underskirt, but as she walks it looks like the beaded fabric is a narrow skirt and the black overskirt is sheer also. You can see the runway lights through it as she walks. There's a sash of black satin, kind of like a cummerbund, that's at her hips, slightly asymmetrical. The back has corset lacing, but not tight so you can see skin.

Joseph: a dark blue gown, strapless. But with sleeves. They're giant puffy sleeves, like leg of mutton puffy, and gathered at the wrists. The neckline is straight across, but that's also where the sleeves start, so the whole effect is an off-the-shoulder look. There is a belt in the same color, with a dark silver buckle, and some grommets. Down the front of the dress are big buttons that match the color of the fabric exactly. It's very short, it comes up to a point in front and it looks like she has on a miniskirt so she doesn't flash everyone. The dress hits the floor in the back, but it's not a mullet hem or a high slit so much as it is an inverted V opening. Naheim: gown in olive green. Well it's a dress. The top looks like a suit, wide lapels and a V neck, and one solitary button for some reason. Then a peplum, then a mullet hem that looks uneven. The whole thing looks like he made it this morning, which he did. It doesn't even fit and the mullet hem looks like he pinned a rectangle of fabric over her ass.

Anna: black gown in sheer beaded lace. There is lining over her boobs and around her hips, but other than that it's just sheer lace. The top has a keyhole, from her waist up to her throat, and then a high collar. It's the “two strips of fabric over her boobs” style of top, but coming to a collar instead of being tied behind her head. The bodice is backless. Jeffrey: gown in pink sequins. The top is a corset, although it's completely covered in the fabric, and it comes up to a point on one side. Then the slit in the skirt is on the opposite side of her body. The skirt actually is attached so it looks like he made a corset and then wrapped fabric around her waist, but draped well. Opposite the slit is a little wedge of skin between the skirt and the bottom of the corset. The skirt is very narrow but floor length. You can see the corset lacing on the back, but it's not that traditional V shape, it's mostly a narrow column.

Bobby: a black and green gown. It's kind of an olive, a darker green. So the green is the bust cups and a length of fabric over one shoulder like a sash, hanging down her side, not draped across her torso. Then a swag of green fabric wrapped around her hips. Everything else is black. It looks like a corset, but covered in fabric, and then a high slit all the way up to her hip on one side. The piece over her shoulder actually has black fringe at the end of it. Like a scarf. Right under the bust cups is some black beaded fringe. All the green is puckered and the skirt looks like it's not full enough. Bryan: long flowing gown in a green shimmery fabric. It's a high neckline, but not a full collar, and then there's no corset or anything, the fabric just hangs off her. I think in order to cover her chest the edges of the bodice are pleated, but left sheer in the center. It's very full, and the back is cut so it moves like a cape but it's all one piece. I'm not sure how he's covered her crotch but you don't see her underwear. It moves really well but I don't like how the model is basically holding the sides and waving her arms as she walks down the runway.

Bryan, Bi, and Jeffrey are the top three this week. That tracks. Bi's dress shimmers, and of course Heidi loves that it's sheer. Law doesn't think it's super fresh, but it has presence. Bryan's gown looks expensive, and has a ton of fabric but doesn't drown her in it. Law brings up a good point, which is that there is zero structure to this dress and Heidi has boobs. What is the plan. Bryan says something about changing the draping on the front and making the edges tighter, I guess so she won't flash anyone. Law says then you lose the beautiful side boob, and the part where her whole side is exposed down to her hip. Law actually has a point, which is that the dress he made doesn't work on the specific client he was given. Fair. Bryan tries to argue about it, and then Law is like, how will you fix the dress? But you just asked that and he answered. You just don't like the answer. Jeffrey had a great color, and they love the cutout on the hip. Winnie says she loves it, but it's maybe “party” and not “fashion”. But Heidi does love it. Right dress wrong event? Law says it's very well made either way. The winner is Bryan. Interesting. Jeffrey is pissed. We are still making a big deal about how Heidi has boobs, but I've seen how much they alter “the winning design” before Heidi goes somewhere in it, so I'm not concerned. So I went and looked it up, and it actually looks very close. It doesn't look sheer at all, so maybe it's lined or there are multiple layers. But it's a very voluminous dress, in that fabric, with the same neckline and the sides open.

So Bryan gets to pick out who is in the bottom. We specify Bi and Jeffrey are in so he can't pick them. Bryan says it's Bobby, Naheim, and Jude. Hilariously they have an interview with Jude where he knows he's in trouble because he said Bryan was the weakest last week, and then after Bryan says his name there's an interview where he's like what the fuck, like he's shocked. Bryan claims it's the challenge, which is why Naheim is there even though he's immune. Jude points out in confessional that putting Naheim in the bottom means Jude and Bobby's chances of going home go up from 33% to 50%. Shady. Bobby knows she should be in the bottom. Joseph and Anna are in. Joseph thought he was headed to the bottom, but he's not complaining.

Naheim admits he made this dress this morning, and I think instead of being impressed they think it's not good enough for three hours. Law says he should have sent her out naked. He's very lucky. Jude's skirt is good but Winnie doesn't like the corset. Law has seen this dress too many times. It's too safe, and then they make him speculate on why Bryan put him there, and he's all maybe we just are too different. They hate Bobby's look, but I think Bobby hates Bobby's look. Also I didn't even notice with everything else wrong with this dress, but the fabric on her bust cups doesn't match. On one side, the fabric runs from side to side, you can see how it folds. On the other side, it runs from her sternum diagonally towards her armpit, and it also looks like there's a hem or a strap at the top. Law claims the bodice is pretty. There is some kind of argument here that Bobby's dress could be tailored and maybe fixed. Naheim is in, and lucky. OOOOOOO so no cliffhanger today! Bobby is out and Jude is in. Finally some closure! Law says “Bobby, we should meet at some point. I have a shot of vodka.” Ha! She's sad but proud of herself. She wanted to prove she was good enough to compete with professionals and she outlasted several people.

There are several shots of Heidi wearing the dress to the premiere, and I think we've solved her boob problem with probably a lot of tape. But she looks good in it.
