Previously on “Project Runway:” Jeffrey was in, meaning R'Bonney, Plane, and Robby were all eliminated. The next challenge was to make whatever you would like, in one day. It's framed as “redemption” but some people don't need redemption? Anyway, this time five people will be eliminated. Then Christian reveals a twist: the top six from last week (the people with immunity) and the six eliminated designers are all going to vote to save someone. So one of those five people who is eliminated can stay. None of the people with immunity were in the top, and it's implied that all of them were terrible this week, but I don't think they all were. Joseph won and got immunity, because that's the win most likely to piss off everyone. Octavius, Dani, Bi, Bao, and Yangyang were all out. Don't think I don't see how how many Asians are in that list. So now we have to wait to see who gets saved. (click for more)
Also this episode is only an hour? Fine, I'm not opposed to getting this over with.
Christian reads all the votes, and I do kind of hope someone arranged the votes for maximum drama the way they do on Survivor. But I don't have high hopes for this show to think about that. Bao, Bi, and Dani all get votes, but in the end Bi gets the most votes. He's very relieved. Bryan of course is convinced that he saved Bi singlehandedly and Bi owes him. Whatever, while Bryan was praising Bi no one bought it. Maybe they just all think keeping Bi will provide drama and distract Bryan. Dani is upset because she was expecting to go further and she doesn't want to go back to being a flight attendant. Bao believes too many people had immunity and it screwed her. Probably, to be fair.
Heidi's got the velvet bag, which is not promising, and then she says they're going to have teams of three. Oh good, the one thing they hadn't done yet that everyone hates. Joseph is immediately like “Oh Lord” and does a full-body eyeroll in confessional. Same. You have to make a three piece capsule collection, because the point is not to actually work together on a garment, it's just to lump people together for drama. Everyone is going to make an outfit, just like they would if it was an individual challenge. They are supposed to be inspired by the NFL. What in the fuck. Oh we got licensing for the logo and the Monday Night Football music. We got some cash. Christian also reveals that somehow the NFL collaborates with designers, which, I guess so. Also their “official fashion partner” is Abercrombie and Fitch, which is somehow unsurprising. The criteria are “boundary pushing”, “editorial”, and “wearable art”. OK so move beyond like, stuff with logos on it aimed at women. Fine.
Heidi asks for volunteers for “heads of houses”. Whoever wins will have their three piece collection “partake” in Super Bowl week. What does that mean? How does your fashion “partake” in anything? Probably there will be a display at the stadium or something. Also my interpretation of what she's saying is that there will be a winning collection and the “head” of the group will be the individual winner? Who knows. Also you get two tickets to the Super Bowl in 2027. Bobby actually wants to win, because “I have a man to take” and she's gonna represent Philly. I mean I guess if you don't like sports you could sell the tickets and make a pile of money. Christian says a win “scores a winning head of the house immunity for the next challenge.” I have no idea if this means only heads of houses can win, or if someone else wins then the head gets immunity, or what. I guess we'll find out when someone wins. Double elimination, two designers coming from the bottom two teams. Yes, keep getting rid of people.
Heidi asks for volunteers and Bobby immediately wants it. Eventually Andriy, Bryan, Joseph, and Jeffrey also raise their hands, so Heidi claims “random” selection from the button bag. Bryan, Jeffrey, Andriy, and Joseph get picked, which is some bullshit. Bobby is pissed. Same, girl, same.
Bryan gets to pick his first team member before anyone, because his name got picked first, and he picks Bi because of course he does. “Since I saved his ass.” Bi laughs in confessional that he won by like three votes so if Bryan had voted for someone else he'd still be saved. Bryan knows Bi is a good designer, even though they are having this dumbass drama. Teams shake out as follows: Bryan, Bi, and Elizabeth; Jeffrey, Anna, and Chloe; Andriy, Bobby, and Jude; Joseph, Naheim, and Aaron. Bobby interviews that she loves Andriy but Andriy doesn't know shit about football. Probably not. Elizabeth is not super thrilled to be stuck with Bryan and Bi and whatever is happening with them.
They also get to pick what team they want, because you have to use the team colors and logo and location as inspiration. Bryan takes the Atlanta Falcons, Jeffrey takes the New York Giants, Joseph picks the Carolina Panthers, and Andriy takes the Philadelphia Eagles, probably because Bobby insisted. That's her team. As Christian dismisses them, someone off screen throws a football at him and Heidi that I guess Christian is supposed to catch. But it takes several attempts because whoever is throwing the football is also terrible.
Each team gets $1500 at Mood. Joseph says last season his team challenge had zero cohesion so they need to make sure that happens. Naheim is just going along with whatever he's talking about. Jeffrey is thinking to dress a girl who is rich enough to get a suite at the stadium. Honestly not the worst mindset. Everyone is going to have corsets. Bobby says Andriy is not being fancy enough and is instead aiming for a wife of “an ordinary football enjoyer”. He insists on “classic”. Bobby is clearly acting like she's in charge and she's gonna do whatever she wants, because she feels that Andriy doesn't understand the challenge and will make them lose.
They have nine hours to work. It seems like there's some merch floating around the workroom, possibly so people can cut out logos? Match colors? Jeffrey is taking this seriously, talking about how he needs to make sure he is doing a good job and that his team is also doing a good job.
Christian appears with a football, kicks it, manages not to injure anyone, and then says “I am very sporty!” Andriy is making a crop jacket and gloves and what looks like a ballgown skirt. Jude is doing a tailored jacket, of course, but he's not 100% solid on the bottom of the outfit. Christian says both of these jackets already exist, and they're supposed to be getting creative. “Think about this challenge as, like, NFL, sports, shape, sculpture.” That doesn't make any more sense. Bobby is thinking a puffer top to mimic shoulder pads. Not a terrible inspiration. Jude agrees with Christian, that they need to be closer to Bobby's ideas, but he doesn't think the team as a whole is there.
Joseph is making cargo pants. I'm sure they'll be huge and very Joseph. Aaron wants to make a patchwork baby doll dress, and he starts talking about how South Carolina is home to the Gullah-Geechee culture, which is the source of a lot of indigo fabrics and techniques. They were supposed to be inspired by the locations, after all. I think Aaron might be too smart for this show. Naheim is also thinking “big jacket mimicking shoulder pads”. The issue is that Aaron and Naheim are making more sculptural shapes, and Aaron is making a huge patchwork dress, and they don't all go together. Joseph says he's going to do what he wants anyway and be true to himself. Christian says the judges are really tough this season (translation: I have no idea what the fuck they are doing over there) so everyone is getting tough love in critiques.
Jeffrey's team talks about corsets and some red and some blue. Chloe has like a mesh skirt with some flaps on the side that she says she's lining in the colors, and Christian straight up tells her he has no idea what that is going to be. Maybe this team needs to not use every color in every piece. Maybe a single color per look. Chloe is struggling because her style is “boho” which doesn't really go with sports.
Bryan is taking the Falcons' logo, specifically the wings, and doing some pleats. He's also got a bunch of volume to reference shoulder pads and helmets. I guess I shouldn't have been that surprised that people would think about shoulder pads. Elizabeth is weaving something, like net-inspired. Bi has the pleating. Christian is pleased, and honestly? Bi has done pleating and pintucking and he was fast at it, and Elizabeth makes her own textiles so for all of Bryan's drama he did figure out what each person on the team was good at, and have them showcase that talent, while making sure the fabrics and colors all went together. Christian says this is the tightest team he's ever seen. It might be. Generally when a team is this cohesive it's because one person made all the designs and just bossed everyone else around. Bi says he wants to win so he'll be nice to Bryan if he has to.
Bobby is mad at Andriy because he refuses to see sense. He's talking about leaving time to make gloves and she's saying it's the jacket that he was told to do something with. He interviews that she's being an asshole, but Bobby sees it as trying to fix the team so no one goes home. There's also the part where Andriy thinks Bobby has criticism for everyone but herself, but we didn't see Christian say anything bad about her look, just Andriy's and Jude's looks. Andriy does say this out loud to Bobby, and she admits she has a lot of thoughts, but he's free to give her criticism, she's open for ideas. But when she says “I have a lot to say, I'm just that kind of person, I'm sorry” he responds with “Which is a bad quality”. Her apology did sound sincere, and not a “I'm sorry you feel that way about what I said” kind of apology. So he's coming off as a jerk here. Oh now it's about her tone. The bad quality is that she thinks she knows better than him, that's how it's coming off, “just a little softer on the delivery.” Please. Bobby actually gets mad, because she feels he's attacking her personality now, and Andriy tries to hide behind “I don't know why you're upset.” Meanwhile the rest of the workroom is noticing and wondering because up to this point they'd seemed pretty close. Jude is trying to just keep his head down. Bobby points out that she's trying to be helpful because her ass is also on the line, and Andriy nitpicks how she said “teacher” and he never said that exact word. He claims it's not personal, as he has taken everything she said personally which is what caused this dumbass argument. In the sewing room Naheim jokes that Mom and Dad are fighting and Jude is the son caught between his divorced parents. Heh. Bobby brings up her main point, which is a good one, that other teams are pushing boundaries and Andriy is like “We have to dress the fans' wives” and that's what is going to make them lose.
Christian shows up with three hours left and blows a whistle to be as annoying as possible. Model fitting. Bobby curses four or five times in a row and when her model comes over she's starting to cry. Aww. Her model gives her a hug and promises it's going to be beautiful. Like she's full on ugly crying. It turns out that she's sewn everything together wrong, like front to front instead of front to back. I'm not sure if this happened because she was distracted by arguing with Andriy, but after the argument I'm sure she is not mentally in a place where she can bounce back from something like this, no matter whose fault it is. She doesn't believe she has time to fix it because it's double quilted so it's a lot to rip out. In confessional she does blame Andriy for putting her off balance and making her lose focus. Jude is asking if she wants some water but Andriy is nowhere to be found. Actually he's vaguely nearby, with his model, because Christian is asking him what the fuck is going on with this team. “Just getting through it.” Andriy in confessional claims he feels bad that she's struggling but “it's not that deep.” I don't know what would qualify as “deep” if not “I have less than three hours to go and I've ruined my entire look.” He finally comes over and tells her this is like, an hour of sewing. Except this is her entire day's worth of work. Zero sympathy.
Christian tries to hate on Joseph's look, but Joseph points out that he (Joseph) dresses like a cartoon character so you are talking to the wrong person. Christian just sighs heavily and says maybe Tyra will like it. Shady. Naheim is getting upset because he does not want to be on the bottom again, and Joseph has immunity. They argue over Aaron's look, especially because it seems like this team is going to walk after Bryan's team, which screws them. Joseph says he can see the whole vision and it's going to be fine, and Naheim wants to be a team player but if the ship is sinking he's going to make sure his look is good enough to save himself. Bryan's team is on track. Chloe's dress is something Christian has seen and he tells her she needs to talk to her team and get some help. She's lost. She's also crying but Jeffrey is immediately telling her she's fine. He interviews that he hates seeing her struggle, and he wants her to focus on what will work, not on what is not working right now. Honestly not a person I expected to be super supportive but I'll take it. He tells her she's fierce or she wouldn't be here. Bi notices that there are a lot of people crying, and are there even any tears left? Come on! But also keep fighting. I mean Chloe's not fighting but yeah.
Runway Day. There is so much frantic flailing and last minute shit going down. Chloe has figured something out, so at least her model is dressed. It's fine. Jeffrey admits Chloe's look isn't great, but he manages to describe it as “not what we hoped” and not blame her for it. At least not on camera. We do not hear from Bobby and Andriy, except for a comment Bobby makes that she broke every machine with her quilting? It doesn't look like Andriy has spoken to her today.
For no reason the runway has fake yard markings on it. Guest judge is Ciara, who is married to a football player in addition to being an award-winning singer. Nina is gone again and based on how often she's here it feels like Law and Tyra are more permanent judges than she is. Oh also there's fire.
First up is Joseph's team. Naheim: black leather crop jacket and skirt. The jacket has a crew neck and no buttons or snaps or visible closures. There's a black and white bandeau bra, and the Panther's logo on one shoulder of the jacket. The shoulders are a little exaggerated, like there's a flat loop of fabric sitting on her shoulder for a small amount of volume. The sleeves come to just below the elbow, I think, but she's got her hands in pockets so it's hard to see. The skirt is a mullet hem, pretty short in the front and long at the sides and back, down past her knees. There are loops of leather just below her hips, wide strips attached over one leg in the front and back. It kind of looks like the skirt has a wrap waistline. It's very short over one leg, with a slit, and then the other leg is a miniskirt with the loop attachments, and then long in the back. Aaron: a babydoll dress with a ton of volume. Basically it's two black leather straps over her shoulders, and another one above her boobs, with a buckle. Then the dress hangs down from there, no waistline, and it's very short. It's a patchwork of black, silver, and teal rectangles, with some striped panels. So team colors. There may be a petticoat. Joseph: cargo pants in teal and a top with narrow black and white stripes. So the cargo pants are super wide, with big pocket flaps and thick chains on the pockets. The top has leg of mutton sleeves, but the bodice is also wide, so it does actually look like a football player in shoulder pads. The front of the top is a narrow slit of skin, with oversized fabric tabs holding it shut and a turtleneck. When the model gets closer you can see that one side of the top is black and white, while the other is teal and white with slightly narrower teal stripes. They don't have the models all walk together, but I think in terms of cohesion this isn't bad. I mean no one ever has cohesion.
Jeffrey's team. Chloe: a long black dress with a white mesh sash. The sash is pretty wide, like a cummerbund or an obi. Other than that, the top is draped nicely and is off one shoulder, and the skirt seems to fit, but it's not that exciting. Liris works it though. There's a team logo on the white mesh, over one hip. The back is nice, mostly open, but because of how the draping is it looks like it's falling off her, instead of on purpose. Jeffrey: red and white dress. Actually it might be the shade of a football. The top is off the shoulder, with long sleeves and white strips at the wrists and around her biceps. The whole front of the dress is a corset, with lacing that goes all the way down past her waist to her crotch. So the bodice comes down to like a point that is just above where the skirt ends. The skirt is about at mid-thigh, with another white strip at the hem and one at her hips. It really looks like his inspiration was a football and he did a great job of echoing that. I didn't notice at first, but the skirt is sitting pretty low on her hips, so there's a big swath of skin exposed from about her hipbone down to where the skirt starts. The back has the same shape, with the tab, but the lacing doesn't narrow in a V shape, it's just one column that's all the same width. Anna: white dress with a corset. The corset sits under her boobs and is shaped like a regular corset, so no tabs. There's a boatneck top and cap sleeves, and a pencil skirt that is that white mesh with white lining, that hits just below the knee. Actually the mesh hits at the knee and the lining is two or three inches longer. All three of these looks have had the Giants logo somewhere obvious. I think the corset is quilted.
Bryan's team. Bi: a long gown in black and red stripes. I think the skirt is a floor-length pleated skirt, so as she walks it looks like vertical stripes, with a flesh-colored fabric in between the colors. The top is basically two pieces of fabric over her boobs, either more pleats or individual strips the same width as the ones in the skirt. There's a logo on one shoulder which seems out of place but this looks well-made. The waistband of the skirt is solid, about three inches of solid blue, so you can tell it's pleats and not striped fabric. Elizabeth: a long column in white. There isn't a ton of shape to it, just a boatneck with cap sleeves and a straight skirt, but the whole bodice is woven. Each square is about an inch wide. There's a row of red at the top, and then some black and a black X across her abdomen, all woven in with the white. The top ends just past her hips, and then the skirt is just there, although it seems to fit pretty well. Elizabeth reveals in a voiceover that this is all pleather. The logo is at the nape of her neck which I kind of like? Bryan: so there's a crop top that looks like an athletic top, a high crew neck that comes down right at her armpit, no sleeves or halter top, and then it ends just under her boobs. The logo is kind of big, right over her chest, so honestly it looks like a branded athleisure top. Then the skirt is a giant red vinyl skirt. It feels like a comforter that he folded in half and put her right in the center of it. But where the fold would be, that part is stiff so it's not just that there's a lot of fabric. It's basically a giant rectangle.
Andriy's team. Andriy: a white sleeveless top with a zipper. It does kind of look like a cropped jacket with no sleeves and two patch pockets at her waist. One shoulder is brown, randomly, and the logo is over one boob. I think the shoulders are slightly padded, but from far away it's not super obvious. The skirt is a long black skirt with a high slit, and some white lacing from the waist to the top of the slit. Jude: a black motorcycle jacket and skirt. The jacket is tailored, with one of those off center zippers that are on one side of the bodice, and then extending along a lapel. I think there may also be a peplum, but only on one side. On the other side, that sleeve is brown leather. The skirt is asymmetrical, with the long side (not to the floor) on the same side as the peplum. Bobby: the top is cropped, but also has a ton of volume. Like a puffer jacket, but without really obvious stitching. I think it's all in black, I don't see any brown leather accents. The sleeves are wide but end at the elbow, with some lacing at each elbow and down the front. Wide lacing, like shoelaces, that matches what Andriy had. The skirt is also black with lacing at the hips, and then it's asymmetrical. It might be a miniskirt and then a wrap like a sarong. The skirt also has volume but I can't tell if it's quilted or just a lot of fabric, and unfortunately I think she got a plus-size model so it also might be because it doesn't fit well. I kind of see her vision but it needs another day or two of editing. When the model turns around, the back of the top sticks out, like it's stiff but it's too wide so it just folds up and sticks out like a fin.
The bottom two teams are the Eagles and Giants, which is Andriy's team and Jeffrey's team. The winning team is Joseph's team, because we are insane today. Why. Fine. Bryan is pissed because he feels he deserves to win and I would agree. So we're not going to talk to Joseph or his team or explain why he won and why we thought those looks were the best. Just the bottom two teams. To clarify what was said at the beginning, Joseph wins immunity and the Super Bowl tickets.
Jeffrey's team is up first. Anna's look reminds them of a white T-shirt, which is nice, but while it's sporty it's not particularly new or memorable. Law and Tyra like it, because she looks rich, like she's the owner of the team. Jeffrey's look is well made but it's a costume. I mean I guess so but at least it's interesting and is obviously football related. I hope I see this look on Drag Race. Law says this is a Super Bowl halftime show backup dancer. Tyra I think has not had the chance to talk to Liris, whom she recognizes as someone with a similar body type. I feel like Tyra also recognizes a great model. Anyway, the point of this is to say that Liris deserves better than this dress. The white mesh belt has blue ribbon lacing and it's not great. She got in her head. Law tries to accuse Jeffrey of telling Chloe to make something terrible, but he says he told her she's got to get out of her head and do what she does best. Law asks if this is her best, but Jeffrey knows it's not, so Law is all, so you failed her. What, was Jeffrey supposed to make something for her? Chloe has to have some of this fault too. Jeffrey just says then I guess I did fail her. Chloe says in confessional that it would be horribly unfair to send Jeffrey home because she couldn't get her shit together.
Time for Andriy's team. Before we even get started we get a confessional from Andriy about how it was a mistake to pick Bobby because it's a mistake to pick someone who wanted to be a leader. Andriy isn't shocked to be on the bottom, because no one is. The judges demand he explain why he's not surprised, as if no one knows, and finally Bobby says they all got stressed out and it brought out their weaknesses. Law is like, yeah, you have the worst look. Out of the whole show. I don't think Bobby is going to argue about that. It doesn't seem like her aesthetic. When the model turns around not only is the top weird, but the skirt is bad. It looks like she had a wide waistband, then the skirt, then another piece of fabric wrapped around her, but lower than the waistband, like across one hip. And they're all in slightly different shades of black. Of course, we're also mad this is a plus-size model and she's in a giant top so she looks like a football player, but this skirt is indefensible so Law has a point. This could be a great look but it's not executed properly.
Out of nowhere Bobby says “I didn't get any feedback” and they actually subtitle it, which means it wasn't that loud but the producers want to make sure you know what she said. There's no reaction to what she said, except for her interview where she says she's going to defend herself. Heidi asks what the struggle was, and Bobby tells her that she'll say when she doesn't like something, but it came off in a way that she didn't intend for it to sound. Andriy tells her they're all emotional and upset, “but there is a time when you just sit down and continue.” He claims he did his best to encourage that. I don't agree, but whatever. Ciara tells them that when you're working as a team, words carry weight. Andriy claims in confessional he feels ashamed that he couldn't fix the situation. I don't quite buy it, because from what we've seen, Bobby is the one admitting she fucked up, and Andriy is saying he did his best. He continues by saying he's upset Bobby is so calm when trying to save herself. Of course she wants to save herself. I'm not sure what being calm has to do with it. He calls this “indecent” which also doesn't make sense. There are a TON of shots of Bobby making weird faces, like little smug smirks and I have no idea where those are from or what is happening.
Andriy's look is well-made but his model has broader shoulders so it looks boxy. The patch pockets at her waist also have big round brown leather buttons, which don't really go. I get that they're probably supposed to tie into the brown shoulder, but they're the wrong buttons for that vest. Jude has a good silhouette, but it's not super NFL themed. Law thinks the jacket looks expensive but the skirt looks cheap. Maybe he should have just made like, some long shorts or something.
Everyone gets kicked out so the judges can talk and I assume we can try to start drama in the Scrap Bin. Heidi quickly says Jude and Anna are safe, which no one disagrees with. Andriy and Jeffrey are the team leaders, but the two designers with the worst looks are Chloe and Bobby. Ciara is more curious about Bobby, I guess in terms of that look seems like it might be more interesting. Jeffrey says he feels terrible, I think because he's internalized whatever bullshit Law was saying about his leadership. Everyone reassures him he doesn't need to feel terrible. He thinks they both could be going home, which is interesting because I thought it was implied that if there are two bottom teams, and two people going home, that's one from each team. Jeffrey seems to be taking the tack of “the captain goes down with the ship” so he has some responsibility for not helping Chloe more. No one likes Bobby's look, and Andriy was maybe better than this. That's it for this week, I guess.
